Greetings,
2018 was another great year for Wallingford and we look forward to 2019. Rapid growth continues throughout the Wallingford area. We welcome many new businesses while some celebrate many years of service in the Wallingford area.
Bedrooms & More celebrated their expansion in November of 2018. Bedrooms & More opened their doors on NE 45th Street 2 blocks west of I-5 in 1972 and have been there ever since.
Wallingford has many other long-time businesses and we wish them continued success through 2019.
The 69th Annual Wallingford Family Parade was another great event and was sponsored by Bedrooms & More. Thank you to all of the participants, residents, and volunteers.
We are looking forward to the celebration of Lincoln High School opening again. As part of the celebration, Celebrate Wallingford along with Bedrooms & More will be hosting the 70th annual Family Parade using Lincoln as the theme.
The Chamber is looking forward to 2019 with expanding membership. The Chamber advocates and provides information to businesses, business growth, and continued partnership with the Seattle Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and the Seattle Office of Economic Development providing additional benefits to Chamber members.
Thank you to all of the volunteers, members, and friends who have contributed this past year and the Chamber will continue to work to support the businesses and the great neighborhood of Wallingford!

The Fabric of Wallingford
When we speak of the character of Wallingford it is helpful to compare it to a fabric. The warp is built on its long established businesses and institutions as the scrim, the interwoven warp are the newer businesses and the institutions and the weft is its people and their homes. The institutions are its schools, its government and social service agencies, its faith community and its community organizations. The businesses that are its backbone, and can be called its legacy businesses, are those that have been around for a long time and provide the framework for its commercial life.
Seattle entered the “modern world” with the Seattle Worlds Fair in 1962. But it was a little longer before that bud fully bloomed. The Boeing bust of 1970-71 interrupted that growth and may also be pointed to as a turning point for Seattle. Therefore it is proposed to identify legacy businesses by the 50-year mark of those in existence in 1969 and that arrived following the Boeing bust in the 1970’s. The arrival of the Metropolitan Federal Savings and Loan (now Chase Bank) building in 1974 and the Taco Time building in 1976 in Wallingford with their suburban architecture mark another turning point. For that reason we cut off the list at the end of the 70’s.
An easy source of data of the businesses that were present in Wallingford, either the specific continuing business itself or a closely coupled successor, can be identified from the Polk directories of individuals and businesses that are located along the neighborhood streets.
