HOLIDAYS In The ‘Hood!
by Rylan Bauermeister
Long time inhabitants of Phinney and Greenwood will know that the holidays have truly arrived when the monkeys start appearing. Every winter season over 200 of the little LED rascals will be lighting up the windows of storefronts all the way along the main avenue in a display of neighborhood pride that (we are reasonably sure) you will not see anywhere else, ever.
If the monkeys fail to sate your appetite for glowing animals, have no fear. From just after Thanksgiving through the end of the year, the Woodland Park Zoo’s annual Wildlights festival will be lighting up the sky on the southern edge of the neighborhood. With thousands of lights in decadent displays, reindeer, and fun events for all, Wildlights is our own peacock bedazzled candy cane lane.
over a hundred craft vendors, activities, and more for the whole family to enjoy. If you’re feeling a little more adult, Naked City Brewing has their annual Brew Santa and Tree Lighting on the first Thursday of December. Want to know what a Brew Santa is? We suggest showing up and finding out for yourself!
The second Friday of December marks the Phinneywood Phestivus. Hop on the trolley and ride up and down the length of the ‘hood, or enjoy the pub crawl and art walk happening at the same time. You can even stop by the Piper Village Santa Lane to meet Mr. and Ms. Claus and listen to some live music, or stop by the senior center on 85th for Jingle Bell Bingo, a karaoke bingo-extravaganza that’s sure to put a smile on any face.
The sights hardly end there, though. The monkeys will appear on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, accompanied by the annual Glow Cone Lightning at the PNA, where we light up our water tower like a Christmas tree. Then, on the first weekend of December there is the Winter Festival, a community gathering at the PNA with
The GSC is actually hosting a number of events this season, for elderly and youthful alike. There will be a costume jewelry sale, and a Christmas Dinner will be offered on Christmas Day.
If you like singing but dislike bingo, then maybe the Caroling Under the Canopy event is more up your alley. Join us on the third Saturday of December for a led sing-along of Christmas favorite around a
fire, with hot cider. Admission is free.
For those of you feeling a bit more on the giving side this season, the traditional PNA giving tree will be in our lobby through mid-December if you want to make this season special for someone in need. Other opportunities to help out include the Piper Village Toy and Clothing Drive on the second Friday, and the North Pole on the Ridge Toy and Food Drive at Illumination Studios, supported by Nutty Squirrel Gelato, on the third Saturday.

Ten Things To Do With Your Kid ((And Kid At Heart) In No Particular Order)
by Rylan Bauermeister
With Seattle growing at an unprecedented rate, it’s easy to feel like you are losing touch with your local resources. We’re always happy to help out on that front, however! Here are some suggestions for fun, family-friendly activities around the neighborhood you can do with (or without) your kid.
n Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co (and BFI) - The Greenwood Space Travel Supply Co acts as a street facing storefront of the Bureau of Fearless Ideas, a non-profit aimed toward giving children an education in creative and non-fiction writing. The storefront itself, however, is a fun and creative exercise. It truly aims to be a legitimate supply stop for space travelers; while many of the products seem silly, they aim to provide things that stimulate the imagination but would also be practical. It may be strange, but that’s exactly why it’s worth a moment of your time, and every penny goes to a good cause. www.greenwood spacetravelsupply.com
n Story Time At The Greenwood Library
- The library (obviously) is always a fun place to be. However, the Greenwood library schedules regular story times for a variety of ages and audiences wherein a librarian will do a reading. Drop by for the toddler story time with your young child, or maybe learn a new language with them by listening in on a Spanish story time. Either way, a little more literature never went amiss in anyone’s life. www.spl.org/locations/green wood-branch/gwd-events-at-thisbranch
n Seattle ReCreative - Aimed at tapping into your artistic side, Seattle ReCreative offers everything from woodworking workshops for families to drop-in paint playgrounds where kids ages one to five can simply express themselves. If you or your child need to tap into your creative energies, think about dropping by and letting their highly trained staff help you along. www.seattlerecreative.org/
n PNA Events - The PNA community plays host to a variety of events and programs for a wide range of ages. Come join us for contra dancing, book exchanges, holiday festivals, author readings, cultural festivals, and home renovation fairs. Check the calendar— we promise, there’s something coming up. www.phinneycenter.org/events
n Phinney Farmers Market - From the first Friday after Memorial Day to the last Friday in September, why not check out the Phinney Farmers’ Market? A fantastic gathering of green thumbs, it’s a great chance to learn about modern agriculture and take home some delicious veggies to cook with. It takes place every Friday, and is a fantastic way to meet your neighbors. www.seattle farmersmarkets.org/markets/phinney
n Parks - While the yet unnamed park adjacent to the Library is stealing the spotlight at the moment, Phinney and Greenwood play host to a variety of sprawling, beautiful parks. Sandel Park offers a massive green playfield for those looking to stretch their legs, while Greenwood Park has a great community garden for those looking to get involved with gardening. The 6th Ave Pocket park is an adorable little green space in an otherwise bustling neighborhood, and the whole thing is framed on either end by Woodland Park’s sprawling valleys and playfields and Carkeek Park’s beautiful views of Puget Sound. No matter where you are, you’re never far from something green.
n Trolley Rides During Phinneywood Phestivus - On the second Friday of December from 6-10 PM, the holiday trolley runs up and down Greenwood, allowing for a delightful night out viewing the monkeys and enjoying the food and lights of the neighborhood. Hop on at one end and eat your way to the other, or just have fun riding; either way, the trolley will take good care of you. www.phinneycenter.org/ calendar/phestivus-17
n Taproot Theater - For when you want to go to an event, but you want something a little more refined. Founded in 1976, the Taproot Theater is a nonprofit that aims to deepen our understanding of the world through performing arts. Their plays range from the deadly serious to the seriously whimsical, and are definitely worth checking out if you need a night of drama. www.taproottheatre.org
n Green Lake - Perhaps a bit of a no-brainer, but Green Lake is a beautiful community resource that everybody should take the time to enjoy this season. From watching the turtles on the logs by the lily pads to snacking on froyo and stopping by the wading pool, Green Lake is sure to make any day just a little more special. www.seattle.gov/parks/find/parks/ green-lake-park
n Woodland Park Zoo - Part of the community since its creation in 1904, the Woodland Park Zoo has only ever grown and expanded. With opportunities for the education of both children and adults in addition to a host of bizarre and fantastical animals, the zoo is an incredible place to spend an afternoon. www.zoo.org
