In my time at the PNA, I have seen our business district change, grow, and prosper as the neighborhood around it has become more invested and reliant on shopping locally. As we witness and participate in the current transformation of Seattle, we wake up in Phinney Ridge and Greenwood to something that is almost a throwback to a bygone era; thriving, small family businesses.

Our business district is what makes our neighborhood such a great place to live, work, and play. It is the heart of our community and brings people together over coffee, ice cream, and books. We have clearly heard the call to buy local and no longer feel the pull to drive to far-flung places to find entertainment and food on Friday nights.

The mission of the PNA Business Group is to connect, support and promote our community businesses, helping to make Greenwood and Phinney a great neighborhood to live, work and play. Thanks to these PNA Business Advisory Group Members for their inspiring leadership and commitment to our community.

Business Group

CODY BAKER, Store Manager at Umpqua Bank, is new to the Phinney Ridge neighborhood and a first year member of the Business Advisory Group. He is a member of the 2019 Rainbow Hop event committee and looks forward to further opportunities to continue supporting the PNA and building a tight-knit and diverse community.

JAMIE CLAUSEN, co-owner of Phinney Estate Law, is a founding member of the PNA Business Group. She helped create and now organizes Rainbow Hop, the annual Pride event for children and families. This is a great way to meet other business owners and publicize your business’s commitment to inclusion.

ALICIA DIEFENBACH, Community Relations Specialist at Verity Credit Union, became involved before Verity even opened their new branch on Greenwood. Alicia chairs the Holiday Promotions Committee and has participated on the ArtWalk committee.

YOUNG JEE FILER, Clinic Director and Physical Therapist at IRG Physical & Hand Therapy – Greenwood, is the chair for the Hunger Goblin and a member of the Holiday Promotions Committee. Participating in the PNA Business Advisory Group has been a pleasurable way to connect with the community!

DARCI GILLESPIE, Darci is a Realtor with Windermere Real Estate Co. and resides in Phinney Ridge, along with her husband and two friendly dogs and cats, popular with neighbors and passers-by. Darci recently joined the PNA Business Advisory Board as a way to connect with and give back to this special community, and is looking forward to more of these opportunities in the year ahead.

ANGIE HOLMSTROM, Formerly a Registered Nurse and investment banker, Angie is now a neighborhood real estate agent with Windermere. When she’s not building relationships, Angie can be found spending time with family and friends, participating in Rotary activities, attending wine tastings, running, and weight lifting

DR. JASON HOOYMAN, (Co-Chair) - Hooyman Family Chiropractic of Greenwood, a family chiropractic office specializing in prenatal and pediatric chiropractics. When you stop by to see us at 143 NW 85th St, you will more often than not be greeted by our smiling daughter Ellie. They are passionate about the Rainbow Hop Event and creating a more united Phinneywood community.

KATE KNAPPERT, Kate is the Operations Manager at Salmon Bay Community Lending and joined the Business Advisory Group in 2017 when Salmon Bay moved into the neighborhood. Kate and Salmon Bay are so glad to be a part of this community, and look forward to finding more ways to help our neighborhood connect and grow!

CHRIS MAYKUT, (Co-Chair) Business Membership Coordinator for the Phinney Neighborhood Association, Chris is a native Seattleite born on Capitol Hill and raised in Phinney Ridge. He created and managed the Chaco Canyon Organic Cafes from 2003 to 2017, and eats/breathes small business. He lives in Phinney Ridge with his wife, Samantha, and two excellent children, Raina and Gus.

BRYAN MILLER, General Manager/Co-Owner of Naked City Brewery & Taphouse. Bryan is a member of the Holiday Promotions Committee, past chair of the Business Marketing Committee, and past co-chair of PhinneyWood Arts Council.

FARRAH PAUL, Farrah is Director of Marketing and Public Relations for Woodland Park Zoo. The zoo has been part of the Phinney and Greenwood community for over 100 years and is one of the neighborhood’s largest cultural institutions. Farrah is pleased to represent the zoo to maintain the wonderful relationships and strong partnerships with the PNA community.

MOLLI PIPER, Programming Director/Owner of Illumination Learning Studio, has been a member of the PNA for 5 years. She joined the Business Advisory Group in 2015 helping organize the Holiday Promotions, Rainbow Hop, Hunger Goblin and Summer Streets Committees. She enjoys being a part of the business group and this wonderful community.

MICHAEL WHEELER, Wheeler has been with Verity Credit Union for 5 years and manages the branch on Greenwood Ave. He, like Verity, believes that community engagement propels us forward. He loves being a member of the PNA and participating in so many events. As a native to the PNW, Wheeler enjoys cloudy days, farmers markets, and cozy evenings at home with his partner and their 2 fur babies.

TEN HIDDEN GEMS OF PHINNEYWOOD

Greenwood and Phinney are known for quirky fun. From the monkeys that appear in shop windows in the winter to the car show in the summer, we pride ourselves on being active and engaged. However, there are some storefronts that are either a little smaller, or a little more out of the way, that some people might not know about. Here’s a list of ten local businesses that are quietly fostering that PhinneyWood community spirit right under our noses.

Cunning Crow Apothecary

The Cunning Crow is a trans-owned and community-led witch’s apothecary that is one newt’s tail short of fantasy, and one white lab coat short of pharmacy. They have supplies for casting spells and working with spirits directly adjacent to cold remedies and herbal teas. The sign outside Makeda & Mingus proudly proclaims it as a place where they “know your name. Your mother’s name. And your dog’s name.” This hole-in-the-wall café doubles as a bar with a nice tap and wine list, and a community meeting place where the staff are sincerely interested in getting to know the regulars. Satay Bar

There isn’t much to say about Satay Bar beyond the fact that it offers the best price on phenomenal Thai food that you’ll find

in Greenwood. We could mention the adorable counter space, the welcoming environment or the lovely art, but honestly those are ornaments on an already impressive thing. It’s small, it’s cute, and it’s way too delicious to pass up.

The Pocket Theater

The Pocket Theater, wedged between a bookstore and a martial arts studio, welcomes performers with open arms. . Proclaiming that you should never have to pay to perform, their rentals are 100% free. They offer classes, and give artists a chance to be themselves, creating an artistic haven in Greenwood that is a revolving door of talent and laughter.

Seattle Knife Sharpening and Supply

We first heard of Seattle Knife Sharpening and Supply from local chefs who were emphatic that it is the best sharpening you can get in Seattle. This small, intimate space features a wall of knives and a very fresh, firm carrot. The store’s proprietor is only too

The Bureau of Fearless Ideas (BFI) & Greenwood Space Travel Supply

A select few will have noticed that there is a teleporter in the back of the space travel supply store just south of 85th. What might be dismissed at first as an art installation is actually the entrance to the Bureau of Fearless Ideas, a non-profit organization dedicated to teaching writing skills (both professional and creative) to youth. As a fun aside, the space travel supply store funds the bureau directly. So go buy some astronaut ice cream, imagine being in space, and, while you’re at it, help fund our next local Asimov. www.fearlessideas.org

The Cozy Nut

In a neighborhood overflowing with bars, it can be pretty hard to distinguish yourself. The Cozy Nut does this right off the bat with a single, stark difference: it has no TVs. This is not a place to watch the game. This is a tavern dedicated to creating a comfortable, personal experience where someone can go grab a drink and talk with friends.

Seattle Recreative

While it may not really be “hidden” it would be unconscionable to not include Seattle ReCreative as one of our neighborhood’s gems. Their passion for community, education, and environmental stewardship – used and new art supplies - make them a true jewel of Greenwood. Stop by. Buy something in the shop. Take a class. New Greenwood park honors legacy of Seattle Chemist Alice Ball

This summer, the City of Seattle announced that the park next to the Greenwood Library would be named after chemist Alice Ball.

Ball was born in Seattle in 1892. She got interested in chemicals as a young child watching her mother and grandfather work with them as photographers.

She went to Seattle High School and the University of Washington, where she earned degrees in chemistry and pharmacy. In 1915, she left her hometown, and became the first woman, and first African-American, to graduate with a master’s degree from the University of Hawaii.

At this time, leprosy was a serious public health problem. In Hawaii, people with leprosy were arrested and placed in exile. It was known that chaulmoogra oil helped the symptoms of leprosy, but the thick oil

couldn’t be injected and applying it to the skin wasn’t an effective cure.

In 1918, at the age of 23, Ball discovered a method so the oil could be blended with water for injection. Patients could now be cured.

Sadly, Alice died too young to see the full impact of her work. A lab accident with chlorine gas in 1916 led to her death.

I first made the suggestion to name the new neighborhood park after Alice Ball when I was a third-grader at Daniel Bagley Elementary.

I have always loved history and science, and first learned about Ball in a book that had profiles of important Black women.

I was excited that Alice Ball was from Seattle and tried to learn more about her. I found that there was little about her at the library, so I went online and even

tracked her on Ancestry.com. Everything I read convinced me that Alice Ball was someone that everyone in Seattle should know about. I was shocked that nothing in Seattle was named after her, and set out to change that.

I knew that a new park was being built in Phinney-Greenwood. With my mom’s help I researched how the city names parks. I decided that my best bet would be to involve other neighbors.

I decided to make a video so I could share what I had learned without having to talk to strangers too much; and ready-made postcards to send to the city, so neighbors would have an easy way to participate.

I started by showing the video to my classroom and then put it online and shared it with community groups.

Hundreds of neighbors filled out postcards. The 36th District Democrats passed a resolution in support.

Local businesses like Umpqua Bank, Salmon Bay Community Lending, and

Phinney Estate Law wrote letters in support. Justin Baird, the bartender at the Angry Beaver, shared it with his customers.

My video also got attention outside the neighborhood. Jessica Winkler, a Tuberculosis scientist at the Center for Infectious Disease Research, got letters of support from the scientists she worked with.

Scientists from Fred Hutch and the University of Washington wrote too. Even historian Shelika Lawson from the University of Wisconsin wrote a letter telling the city how important it was for cities to honor individuals like Alice Ball.

I was thrilled when I heard the city was going to officially name the park after Alice Ball, even if I was embarrassed by the attention and congratulations.

As I said in my video, I hope the park will remind other kids that “learning can change lives, and that learning looks like all of us.” I plan to be a chemist myself when I grow up.
