Phinney Greenwood

Neighborhood and Business Directory

OUR WELCOME

Dear Friends,

On behalf of the Phinney Neighborhood Association (PNA), I am pleased to present the 2016/2017 edition of the Phinney/Greenwood Neighborhood and Business Directory.

This year was a tough one for Greenwood, after the March 9 explosion destroyed three businesses, damaged another 50, and left twelve neighbors homeless for many months. PNA’s mission to build community was reflected in the overwhelming response from neighbors, businesses, and people from far beyond Greenwood coming together to rebuild the neighborhood. It was such a privilege for PNA to be able to step up and support the Greenwood community and to be a conduit for over 1,500 individuals and local businesses to financially support the relief efforts, raising over $330,000!

I hope you will use this directory as a personal guide to all amenities and activities our neighborhood has to offer and I look forward to seeing you at any of our great community events!

See “WHAT’S HAPPENING” on page 8 -10 to learn more about community and zoo events.

Things that make Phinney/Greenwood Special

More a state of mind than an actual place, PhinneyWood is what we call the Greenwood and Phinney Ridge neighborhoods. Whichever side of the street they call home, Phinneywoodians are quixotic, compassionate, and hard working. They are the fire behind so many activities, creating a warm and welcoming experience for all. Here are ten activities that set PhinneyWood apart:

n Holiday Monkeys – When most neighborhoods celebrate the holidays with white twinkle lights, Phinneywood celebrates by releasing LED monkeys along Greenwood and Phinney Avenue. The monkeys were made by a team of volunteers, and the PNA organizes various events and activities throughout the holiday season, making this one of the better date-night spots in the city. www.monkeywood.org

n The Gumshoe 5k – The Gumshoe is an annual summertime FUNdraising "detective" walk. Participants solve the clues that guide them on a 3.1 mile walk - discovering fun things along the way and raising money for local non-profits. www.dothegumshoe.org

n The Greenwood Seafair ParadeA Greenwood summertime tradition, the annual Greenwood Seafair Parade is the oldest neighborhood Seafair parade in the region. Thousands of people line the route each July to watch the over 100 entrants that include bands, drill teams, floats, pirates and more. www.seafair.com

n PNA Tool Library – Half of doing any job well is having the right tools. In addition to providing professional references and DIY advice, the PNA's Tool Lending Library, located in the Phinney Center's brick building, shares thousands of tools with our neighbors to help them do that job right! 6532 Phinney Ave N www.phinneycenter.org/tools

n Woodland Park Zoo – Founded in 1899, Woodland Park Zoo has sparked delight, discovery and unforgettable memories for generations of Northwest families. You’ll find some 300 animal species here along with exotic trees and vegetation, including a rain forest. 601 N 59th Street www.zoo.org

n The Greater Seattle Bureau of Fearless Ideas (BFI) – Grab a copy of the Encyclopedia Greenwoodia and learn about Greenwood’s history and magic. You can buy it in the Greenwood Space Travel Supply Company, a novelty store and tutoring center dedicated to helping youth, ages 6 to 18, improve their students to write. 8414 Greenwood Ave N www.fearlessideas.org

n The “Big One” Art Walk - This Springtime neighborhood art walk spans 2-days and has over 80 participating venues from 87th & Greenwood Ave to 59th & Phinney Ave N. It is one of the original neighborhood art walks and draws thousands of neighbors out of their homes to appreciate paintings, sculpture, photography and more. www.artupphinneywood.com

n Día de los Muertos FestivalA Latin American holiday in November honors the dead with food, drink, parties, and activities. It is a time to commemorate the dead and celebrate their lives with family and friends. This free event is hosted at the Phinney Center, organized by the Phinney Neighborhood Association. 6532 Phinney Ave N www.phinneycenter.org/dia

n Bingo Karaoke at the Greenwood Senior Center - The monthly tune-fest where tickets sell out within 24 hours of going on sale! In fact, the event is a magnet for the hipster-bingo set and become a multigenerational happening in which participants take a break from their number-stamping only to belt out sing-along classics. 525 North 85th St www.phinneycenter.org/bingo

n The Greenwood Car Show -

The Greenwood Car Show happens on the last Saturday of June along Greenwood Avenue. The Greenwood Knights Car Club produces this event for everyone who enjoys classic rides and to support a variety of local nonprofits and automotive scholarships. www.greenwoodcarshow.com

The celebration begins with the Woodland Park Zoo’s Wildlights. Wild animals and places are created in over 600,000 sparkling LED lights. Experience amazing indoor and outdoor light displays, see a few animal friends, – including visiting reindeer – have a faux snowball fight and listen to carolers.

Up the Street from the zoo, monkeys are hosting a neighborhood holiday party. PhinneyWood’s newest holiday tradition will once again light up the neighborhood with 200 LED – lit metal – frame monkeys that will hang in the windows of businesses up and down Phinney and Greenwood Avenues.

Monkey Season will kick off with the annual GloCone lighting at the air raid tower at 67th and Phinney at 5

pm on Saturday, Nov. 26. On Dec. 9, the monkeys will be the highlight of Phinneywood Phestivus, a neighborhood holiday party. Check out the Zoo's Wildlights then catch the free Emerald City Trolley and ride along Phinney and Greenwood between the zoo and 87th, 6 pm–midnight courtesy of the PNA, Umpqua Bank and Verity Credit Union. Count monkeys, have dinner, look at art, have a drink and monkey around!

There’s more than monkeys in the Phinneywood Holiday season. On Dec.1, get your picture taken with Brew Santa on the holiday brew deck with the majestic 25’ Christmas tree in the Walrus Beer Garden and taste the Bing Spiced Cherry Ale at Naked City Taphouse and Brewery. On December 3 and 4, the PNA Winter Festival and Craft Fair features

over 100 artists and crafts vendors, two stages of entertainment and delicious baked goods! The PNA Giving Tree gives you the opportunity to share the holiday spirit with those in need. Pick up a tag at the Winter Festival or businesses in the neighborhood who are hosting Holiday Giving programs. On December 17, Illumination Learning Studio hosts the North Pole on the Ridge Food and Toy Drive and Gary's Greenwood Auto Repair hosts Caroling Under Gary’s Canopy.
