kiwanis Club Members, Dr. Percy P. Cooley, Robert Stretch and Robert Follis were strong supporters of the Cavalcade of the valleys fair and wanted to see a community event like it continue. In 1946, governor Langley promised state funds if the Monroe area fair became broader. Fair Board Members did as requested and the continued next page
name changed to the Snohomish County Fair. Within three years, the fair outgrew its three-acre site in downtown Monroe and was relocated to the 40-acre site (formerly the County Poor Farm) alongside the newly designed Route uS-2. With the big move came the final name change—The Evergreen State Fair.
Since 1949, the Evergreen State Fairgrounds have grown in size, attendance, experiences, sights, scenes and smells. Although the Fair is the largest event at the fairgrounds, over 600,000 people come every year to experience some of the 1,100 activities the fairgrounds have to offer. Due to the many year-round events the fairgrounds help generate $23 million in positive economic impact for the Puget Sound Region.
We’re thankful for the pioneers and community members who invested their time, money, sweat and tears over preserving all of the Snohomish County fairs. Since the conception of The Evergreen State Fairgrounds, we’ve pledged to contribute to “youth development”. It is for that purpose we work to make every year more impactful than the last.

MONROE HISTORY
The great Northern Railroad greenhouses in Monroe were built in 1926 and dismantled in 1962. They provided fresh flowers for the dining cars and plants for all the depots as well as the facilities at glacier National Park. At Christmastime 2,000 corsages were created so that every woman who boarded the train on Christmas Day could be given one. The greenhouses were located on the west side of Lewis Street, where a farm supply operated until recently.
With a town full of loggers, a log bucking contest on the Fourth of July was a natural. This one from the early 1900s featured single-man crosscut saws. The saws were always kept extremely sharp and oiled, so even a cut through a large log was fairly quick.

When Safeway moved to a new shopping center further down Main Street, Coast to Coast Hardware took over that space until it burned in the 1990s. The condensery smokestack is visible over the roofs just left of center. The four-way flashing light over the intersection was the only stoplight in town.

Large scale berry farming began around Monroe about 1902. Two years later the Monroe Fruit Growers Association formed and by 1905 thousands of crates of berries were being shipped by rail across the nation. The Great Northern Railroad encouraged this in an effort to control the market. This photo from about 1906 shows pickers at Manuel “Mann” Udell’s berry farm in Park Place. Mann, on the left, owned productive farms on both sides of the Cascades and was the grandson of early homesteaders William and Martha
Originally envisioned as an institution to keep young first time offenders out of the general prison population and offer them training in trades, inmates were involved in the construction of the prison itself. They made the bricks from clay available onsite, its availability being one of the reasons the Monroe site was chosen by the state. The brick plant turned out more than 15,000 bricks per day and supplied them for buildings in Monroe as well as the reformatory.

Monroe’s vibrant parade officially ushers in fair
A Monroe tradition for over 75 years, each year the Monroe Fair Days Parade ushers in the Evergreen State Fair with bright colors, dazzling costumes and lively performances – all sprinkled with a bit of history.
The parade, which typically takes place during opening weekend of the Evergreen State Fair, proceeds east down Main Street in a flurry of music, dancing and vibrantly decorated parade floats. Numerous organizations take part in the event including the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, the Monroe Police Department, the Monroe Correctional Complex, the Monroe Fire Department, the Monroe Historical Society, the Monroe School District and many others.
Each year, the nearly one-mile parade route along Main Street is lined with chairs as thousands of citizens pack the sidelines to watch the parade go by.
The very first parade was held in 1937, as part of a community fair. The event, which took place on East Main and Ferry Street in downtown Monroe, included a pet parade and a general parade, with music by the Washington State Reformatory Band. During the 1940s, the parade was held in conjunction with a carnival and agricultural fair that was known as the “Cavalcade of the valleys.”
The parade had a few starts and stops during the 1960s, but was kept going by local groups including the Monroe kiwanis and the Monroe Jaycees.

In recent years, the parade has been collaboratively organized by the Monroe Chamber of Commerce and the Monroe Fair Days Parade Committee, which includes representatives from the city of Monroe, the Monroe School District and the Evergreen State Fairgrounds.
Honors are given each year, including the Monroe Fair Days Parade grand Marshall and Junior grand Marshall, who are both featured in the parade. Other parade winners are selected in categories like Best Overall, Best Equestrian, Best Float, Best Historic Entry, Best Dance and Cheer group, Best Nonprofit, Best Specialty Performance and many others.
The Fair Days Parade has been a tradition in Monroe for many years. This one from the 1950s included a fish being towed by men in a boat on the back of a truck. The view is looking west on W. Main St. toward the intersection with Blakely.
