Welcome to First Hill
First Hill is Seattle’s first residential neighborhood, perched directly east of downtown. Our neighborhood rose to popularity in the late 19th century and was home to many of early Seattle‘s most influential residents and pioneer families. By the beginning of the 20th century, First Hill was a bustling neighborhood of mansions, row houses, single family homes, boarding rooms, churches, hospitals and commercial services. In the mid-20th century, high-rise buildings began to develop, as well as Yesler Terrace, the nation’s first racially integrated public housing project. Today, First Hill is a rapidly growing, urban neighborhood with an exciting and diverse mix of businesses and residents.

First Hill Improvement Association (FHIA) is committed to working alongside residents, businesses, organizations, and institutions to address the needs and concerns of the community. Over the years, FHIA has been dedicated to addressing issues of housing affordability, high-rise development, construction impacts, insufficient public space, accessibility, homelessness, and a growing residential population.
We champion a dynamic and safe First Hill for all, through:
• advocacy on key issues affecting the neighborhood;
• providing a forum for discussion;
• programming community events;
• tracking and communicating important changes and their impact to the community; and
• connecting residents, visitors, and employees to create the best and most livable neighborhood possible.
BECOME A MEMBER
Please consider supporting FHIA and joining us as we work to enrich life on First Hill and plan for a great future for this community. Your support enables us to continue to advocate for the people, places, and businesses that make First Hill a vibrant place to live, work, and visit. Being a member gives you the right to vote at FHIA meetings and the right to be nominated as a trustee on the FHIA board. FHIA is a 501c3 organization and membership is tax deductible.
As a vital part of the First Hill community we hope you’ll support our work through your membership. Please join us in 2019 as a new or returning FHIA member. You can do so online at www.firsthill.org/join-fhia. Feel free to call Anne McCullough or Doug Holtom at 206-624-0208 if you have any questions. We look forward to another exciting year on First Hill and we thank you for being our neighbor!

MEETINGS & COMMITTEES

URBAN DESIGN & PUBLIC SPACE COMMITTEE
FHIA members gather monthly seeking ideas to continually improve the pedestrian environment in our village. Using the First Hill Public Realm Action Plan we review new housing projects to encourage development of four street concept designs; acquire additional public space; reutilize three existing parks and encourage commonality among three walking loops.
Urban Design & Public Space committee meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 1pm at Horizon House, 900 University Street.
TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE
The FHIA Transportation Committee’s goal is equitable access for all residents, workers, patients, and visitors to First Hill including Walking, Transit, Cycling, and Driving. In addition, we work to make the streetscape more inviting and safer for people of all abilities wherever and whenever possible. We work closely with the UDPS Committee as well as numerous county and city agencies.
Transportation committee meetings are held of the first Monday of every month at 5:30pm at Skyline, 725 9th Avenue.
