Green’s Big Night Sparks Cruisers’ 54-36 Home Win
By Skip Smith
The Lady Cruisers opened the week at home Wednesday, Dec. 17, hosting the Washington Patriots at Rainier Connect Arena. Eatonville earned its second straight victory of the season with a 54-36 win, fueled by a season high 17 points from Jordyn Green.
Eatonville set the tone early, jumping out to a six point lead in the opening minutes behind an 8-0 run. The Cruisers continued to apply pressure and closed the first quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 16-7 advantage. Green accounted for nine of Eatonville’s points in the quarter, setting the pace offensively.
The momentum carried into the second period as the Lady Cruisers opened with another 6-0 run. After Washington snapped the streak with a free throw, Eatonville responded with a 7-0 run to stretch the lead further. Green remained hot, scoring eight more points in the quarter as the Cruisers took a commanding 33-15 lead into halftime.
Eatonville continued to build its cushion in the third quarter, getting balanced contributions from Josie Lavergne and Morgan Laird, who each scored four points in the period. The Cruisers entered the final quarter ahead 43-20 and firmly in control. With a 23 point lead, head coach Chelsea Caramandi was able to go deep into her bench and give valuable minutes to her reserves. Senior post Savanna Price dominated the glass in the fourth quarter, pulling down seven rebounds. While Washington outscored Eatonville 16-11 in the final period, the lead was too large to
BLOOD DONATION
From page 1
The impact is especially severe for Type O negative blood, which is considered the universal blood type and is often used in emergencies when a patient’s blood type is unknown. Emergency low levels of O negative blood can limit hospitals’ ability to respond quickly to trauma cases.
“Bloodworks Northwest says donors of all blood types are urgently needed”
Flooding can also increase demand for blood. Weather-related accidents, cleanup injuries, and evacuation incidents can all result in a greater need for transfusions, placing additional pressure on already limited supplies.
LOCAL HOSPITALS FEEL THE EFFECTS
Hospitals throughout Pierce County rely on Bloodworks Northwest to manage blood supply logistics and ensure blood is available when needed. When inventories drop, hospitals may be forced to delay non-emergency procedures or carefully prioritize limited supplies for the most critical cases.
While patients may never see these behind-the-scenes decisions, the availability of blood plays a direct role in patient outcomes. Maintaining a stable supply depends on community members stepping forward to donate, especially after disruptions like flooding.

overcome as the Lady Cruisers closed out the 54-36 win.
Green finished with 17 points and six steals to lead Eatonville. Lavergne added 10 points and seven rebounds, Laird chipped in nine points and seven steals, and Savanna Price grabbed eight rebounds to go with four points.
“This week showed a lot of growth for us, especially in taking care of the basketball,” Caramandi said. “We cut our turnovers from 43 in our opener down to 12 on Wednesday, which is a big step forward. Jordyn led us with 17 points and 6 steals, and it was great to see her effort pay off she works incredibly hard every day.”
The Lady Cruisers wrapped up the week Friday on the road against a tough Steilacoom Sentinel squad, falling 52-34.
Eatonville struggled to find an offensive rhythm early, scoring five points in the first quarter while Steilacoom built a 12-5 lead. Sadie Mettler led the Cruisers with three points in the opening period.
Jordyn Green and Delaney Livernash each scored three points in the second quarter, but Eatonville was unable to close the gap and trailed 2312 at halftime.
The Sentinels extended their lead in the third quarter, knocking down five of their eight three pointers on the night and outscoring the Cruisers 19-7. Steilacoom entered the fourth quarter firmly in control.
Eatonville showed fight in the final period, outscoring the Sentinels 15-10 behind Morgan Laird, who scored eight of her 10 points in the quarter. Despite the strong finish, Steilacoom held on for the 52-34 victory.
Laird led Eatonville with 10 points, while Mettler finished with eight points and 13 rebounds. Delaney Livernash added six points and 10 rebounds in her first varsity start, and Josie Lavergne pulled down 12 rebounds.
“Friday was a tough matchup, but there were positives,” Caramandi said. “Delaney Livernash gave us a strong first varsity start with 6 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals, both Mettler and Lavergne battled on the boards, and Morgan Laird continues to be a steady, calming presence for us offensively. We’ll keep building and focusing on consistency.”
The Lady Cruisers will take a short break for the holidays before returning to action Saturday, Dec. 27, when they travel to Mossyrock to face the Mossyrock Vikings at 7 p.m.
that community response following emergencies is often strong, but timing matters. Donations are needed as soon as conditions allow, not weeks later.
SAFETY REMAINS THE PRIORITY
Bloodworks Northwest stresses that donor safety comes first. Residents should not attempt to travel through flooded roads or unsafe conditions to donate. Appointments can be rescheduled, and donation centers adjust operations based on access and weather conditions.
Once roads are clear and travel is safe, donating as soon as possible helps stabilize inventories and prevent further shortages.
HOW PIERCE COUNTY RESIDENTS CAN HELP
Bloodworks Northwest says donors of all blood types are urgently needed to keep local hospitals stocked with blood for cancer patients, trauma cases, and premature babies. Community members who are healthy and able to safely reach a donor center or blood drive are encouraged to make an appointment as soon as possible.
Same-day appointments are often available. Donors can schedule an appointment by visiting bloodworksnw.org or by calling 800-398-7888. Appointments can also be made by texting BWAPP to 999-777 to download the Bloodworks app and book directly.
Those whose appointments were canceled due to flooding are encouraged to reschedule when conditions improve. Even one donation can help save up to three lives, making blood donation one of the most direct ways Pierce County residents can support their community during flood recovery and the busy holiday season.
LEAGUE VICTORY

Amari Samuel led all scorers with 30 points, attacking the basket consistently and setting the pace offensively. Colton Herbrand added 10 points, while Nash Sherrard finished with four. Jake Brannon chipped in three points as Eatonville received contributions throughout the lineup.
Beyond the box score, Bennett emphasized the collective nature of the performance.
“This might have been the best collective effort and togetherness I have seen from a group in a game since I started coaching here. We shared the ball, ran some offense, got the defense moving and we were able to make plays,” Bennett said.
The significance of the win was evident after the final horn.
“It was an awesome moment in the locker room afterwards for the group - our first league win in over 1,000 days - we have a lot to be grateful for and we are excited to continue on this journey together and get some rest over the holidays,” Bennett said.
Prior to that rewarding win, the Cruisers traveled to Tacoma to take on the Washington Patriots, where Eatonville struggled to find its offensive rhythm on the road Tuesday night (Dec. 16), falling 6738. Despite a spirited effort in the second half, an early deficit proved too difficult to overcome.
The game began with a tough opening quarter for Eatonville. The Cruisers’ offense was held to just 3 points in the first eight minutes, while Washington jumped out to an early 14-3

For adults, it offers a quiet pause amid the celebration to reflect on goals, gratitude, or simply something they are looking forward to. The stars remaining on display all year turn the celebration into something lasting, a visual reminder of the community’s collective hopes as 2025 unfolds.
While Mill Haus Cider Co. is known for its ciders, the family-friendly focus of the event ensures there are options for everyone. Adults can enjoy a celebratory toast, while non-alcoholic beverages make it easy for kids and non-drinkers to fully participate. The emphasis remains on togetherness rather than consumption, keeping the event inclusive and appropriate for families.
For parents, events like this remove many of the stress points that often come with New Year’s Eve. There is no pressure to stay out late, no complicated transportation planning, and no need to choose between celebrating and keeping kids on a routine. Families can arrive, enjoy the countdown, dance a little, add a star to the Wishes Wall, and head home feeling like they truly marked the moment.
The appeal also extends beyond families with young children. Early New Year’s Eve celebrations are welcoming for grandparents, caregivers, and anyone who prefers a quieter, earlier evening. Multigenerational families can attend together, knowing the event is designed to be comfortable and engaging for all ages.
As the 9 p.m. countdown approaches, anticipation builds in the taproom. Kids gather near the screen, parents get phones ready for photos, music fills the space, and the Wishes Wall slowly fills with stars. When the countdown reaches
lead. Even so, Bennett said the defensive approach was sound from the opening tip.
“We put a good game plan together to contain their two all-league guards and for 80% of the game we had them flustered and out of their actions and style of play,” Bennett said. The defensive intensity picked up in the second quarter, but scoring remained scarce for both sides. Eatonville managed 8 points in the frame and went into the locker room trailing 24-11. Bennett pointed to that stretch as a key positive despite the deficit.
“To hold a team of that caliber to 24 points in a half and they did not score their 26th point until 3:30 left in the third speaks to the effort, grit, and toughness of our team,” Bennett said. “It is a game that will pay dividends for our program moving forward.”
The Cruisers came out of the break with renewed energy. The third quarter was Eatonville’s most productive of the night, as it poured in 14 points to try to chip away at the lead. Washington answered with 17 points of its own to maintain a 41-25 advantage heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the game slipped away as Washington’s offense broke through for 26 points. Eatonville continued to battle and added another 13 points with contributions from across the bench.
“The game got away from us in the end but it was a defensive effort that if we keep that up we are going to keep shrinking the margins and get on the other side of a few of these,” Bennett said.
zero, cheers erupt and the New Year officially begins - early, but no less joyful. Afterward, families are free to head home, continue celebrating quietly, or simply enjoy the satisfaction of having welcomed the New Year together. For many, that flexibility is what makes early celebrations so appealing.
Mill Haus Cider Co.’s Early New Year’s Eve celebration is a reminder that traditions can evolve. The New Year does not have to arrive at midnight to feel meaningful. Sometimes, the best way to welcome what’s next is to do it earlier, together, with kids included and wishes written where the whole community can see them all year long.
