Eatonville Approves Temporary Police Leadership Agreement With Roy Council also weighs $250,000 Ridge Road sewer extension and changes to mandatory hookups Staff Report
T
he Eatonville Town Council approved an agreement Oct. 12 allowing the City of Roy’s police chief to temporarily lead Eatonville’s police department while the town recruits a permanent replacement. Under Resolution 2026-RR, Roy’s chief will provide executive oversight, supervisory authority and final approval of police reports for $900 per week. The arrangement, which began Oct. 13, is expected to require approximately 10 hours weekly, with most duties performed remotely. Mayor Emily McFadden will retain authority over Eatonville police personnel matters, including leave, complaints and disciplinary actions. The agreement can be terminated by either municipality with 10 days’ written notice and is expected to end when Eatonville appoints a permanent police chief. Councilmember Josh Dunn questioned why councilmembers received the agreement only hours before the meeting and why it had not undergone committee review. McFadden said staff had identified supervisory responsibilities that required a commissioned police chief, prompting the town to seek assistance from Roy. The council approved the agreement unanimously. McFadden also reported that two candidates for the permanent chief position had been interviewed and were proceeding through background checks.
RIDGE ROAD SEWER EXTENSION DISCUSSED
Councilmembers also discussed a proposed $250,000 sewer extension along Ridge Road that could affect approximately nine properties. Resident Becky Crocker opposed requiring homeowners with functioning septic systems to connect to the new sewer line, citing potentially significant connection expenses and approximately $900 in additional annual sewer charges. Councilmembers generally supported installing the sewer line while other road and utility improvements are underway but questioned whether existing homeowners should be required to connect before their septic systems fail. Discussion included possible code changes allowing existing septic systems to remain in use while requiring new development to connect to available sewer service. Staff will develop possible revisions for committee review. No final decision was made on the sewer extension or connection requirements. The Eatonville Town Council meets next on Monday, Oct. 26, at 7 p.m. The Dispatch will publish its recap on Wednesday, Nov. 4, in keeping with its regular coverage schedule.
Air Force Veteran and Beloved Morton Educator Jordan Nelson Honored with Quilt of Valor Submitted
A
ir Force veteran and Morton Jr./Sr. High School teacher Jordan Nelson received a Quilt of Valor during the Mineral Lake Lions Club’s monthly membership dinner on October 14 at the Mineral Lake Lions/Legion Community Building. Nelson served in the United States Air Force for more than a decade, including service during Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom, and Operation New Dawn. Throughout his military career, he earned numerous medals and recognition for his achievements and service. Today, Nelson is a well-regarded Career and Technical Education business teacher loved by his students. He attended the dinner as the club’s guest speaker, discussing projects he oversees at the high school and the ways students apply their skills beyond the classroom. His classes have produced T-shirts and banners for the Mineral Lake Lions Club. Following his presentation, Kristi Riffe Gerard of Mossyrock Quilts of Valor
presented Nelson with the quilt in recognition of his military service. She was joined by Dolly Christensen, Linda Gordon, Carolyn McKelvie, and Rose Suter, who are members of both Mossyrock Quilts of Valor and the Mineral Lake Lions Club. The presentation brought the two organizations together to honor Nelson’s service to the country and recognize his continued contributions as an educator and community partner. Both organizations invite community members to get involved. The Mineral Lake Lions Club gathers for monthly membership dinners and participates in local service projects and events. Those interested in joining can contact Mineral Lake Lions through Facebook, email info@minerallakelions.com, or call current club president Steve Mayer at 901-359-1858. Mossyrock Quilts of Valor welcomes volunteers with some quilting knowledge who would like to help honor military service members and veterans. Meetings take place throughout the year except in December. For information about joining

Social Security Benefits to Increase 3.6% in 2027 Staff Report
M
illions of Americans receiving Social Security benefits will see their monthly payments increase by 3.6% in 2027, following an annual costof-living adjustment announced by the Social Security Administration on October 14. The increase will take effect in January for nearly 72 million Social Security beneficiaries, including retirees, people receiving disability benefits and eligible survivors. Approximately 7.3 million Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients will receive their increased payments beginning December 31. Some individuals receive both Social Security and SSI benefits. For retired workers, the average monthly benefit is expected to rise from $2,095 to $2,170, an increase of $75. Individual increases will vary depending on existing benefit amounts. A retiree currently receiving $1,500 monthly, for example, would receive approximately $54 more before deductions.
WHY BENEFITS ARE INCREASING
Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustment, commonly called COLA, is
designed to help benefits keep pace with inflation. The adjustment is calculated using changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers between the third quarters of consecutive years. The 2027 increase reflects price changes measured between July and September of 2025 and the same period in 2026. While the adjustment increases benefits, it does not necessarily mean recipients will have substantially more spending power. Higher costs for housing, groceries, utilities and medical care can offset some of the additional income. Medicare premiums may also affect the amount beneficiaries actually receive. Updated Medicare costs for 2027 will be announced separately.
OTHER CHANGES FOR 2027
The maximum amount of annual earnings subject to Social Security payroll taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300. The Social Security tax rate remains 6.2% for employees, with employers contributing an additional 6.2%.
For SSI recipients, the maximum federal monthly payment will increase from $994 to $1,029 for an eligible individual and from $1,491 to $1,544 for an eligible couple. When will recipients receive notice? The Social Security Administration will begin making personalized benefit notices available online in late November through my Social Security accounts. Recipients who have not enrolled in paperless notices will receive mailed notifications in December. Notices will explain the new monthly benefit amount and applicable deductions. The increase comes as Social Security continues facing long-term financial challenges. Without legislative changes, program reserves are projected to become insufficient to pay full scheduled benefits in the coming years. For now, recipients do not need to apply for the 2027 increase. The adjustment will be made automatically. More information is available at ssa.gov/ cola.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Focus less on big changes and more on steady, predictable contact. A short call every few days, a standing weekly meal or coffee, or a regular shared errand gives him something to count on. Consistency matters more than length or intensity. Even if you’re not especially close, or don’t live nearby, steady contact can still make a difference. Technology can help bridge the distance through simple routines like weekly video calls, text check-ins, shared family schedules or photo threads. The goal isn’t constant communication, but fewer long stretches where isolation can quietly take hold. It also helps to widen his circle in practical ways. Siblings, grandchildren, neighbors and longtime friends can all play a role. Even brief calls, occasional visits or shared meals can slowly rebuild connection. Familiarity and repetition matter more than effort or duration.

Dear Worried, ou’re right to pay attention to this. The loss of a spouse often leads to increased isolation in older adults, even when they insist they’re fine. But long stretches without meaningful contact can take a real toll on both emotional and physical health. Public health research shows that about one in three adults age 50 and older reports feeling lonely at times, and those who live alone are at higher risk for social isolation. But loneliness isn’t always easy to spot, especially in older adults who live alone. The good news is there are practical ways to help your father reconnect, along with programs and services designed specifically for older adults living alone.
ENCOURAGE ACTIVITY

Staying active can help reduce isolation. Many communities offer exercise classes, hobby groups, church activities, volunteer opportunities and lifelong learning programs. The best fit depends on personality and whether your father prefers group settings or smaller, lowkey interactions.
If transportation is a challenge, helping arrange rides or connecting him with local services can make participation more realistic. Just as important is a sense of purpose. Volunteering, gardening, pet care, time with grandchildren, helping neighbors or mentoring others can all add structure, meaning and a reason to stay engaged. AVAILABLE PROGRAMS
There are several well-established programs that can help reduce isolation among older adults. A good place to start is the Eldercare Locator at 800-677-1116 or eldercare. acl.gov, which connects families to local Area Agencies on Aging that can help arrange services like meals, transportation, home visits and social programs. Meals on Wheels America delivers home meals and often includes brief daily check-ins from volunteers, offering both nutrition and a bit of regular human contact. AmeriCorps Seniors (americorps.gov) runs the Senior Companion Program, where trained volunteers provide regular visits, conversation and light assistance, depending on what’s available locally. For phone-based connection, the Institute on Aging Friendship Line (ioaging.org/friendship-line) offers 24/7 support and scheduled check-in calls for older adults living alone, while DOROT Caring Calls (dorotusa.org/ programs/caring-calls) pairs seniors with volunteers for weekly conversations based on shared interests. Local senior centers are also a strong resource, offering meals, classes, group activities and transportation in many communities. Libraries, churches and community organizations can provide additional low-pressure ways to stay connected. SIGNS TO WATCH
Loneliness can overlap with depression. If you notice changes such as poor sleep, loss of interest in usual activities, irritability, confusion or neglect of personal care, it may be time to involve his doctor. These issues are common and treatable. In the end, the goal is simply to help your father stay connected and reduce isolation. Start small, stay consistent, and those simple touchpoints can add up to a more connected and meaningful daily life.

Behrendt’s Two Goals Power Lady Cruisers Past Clover Park By Skip Smith
HEATHER QUIRIE
T
Eatonville’s Mila Behrendt fires a shot against Clover Park during the Lady Cruisers’ 4-0 victory Wednesday at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. Behrendt scored twice in the win, finding the back of the net in the 30th minute off an assist from Madi Berube before adding her second goal early in the second half on a pass from Kalli Olsen. The Lady Cruisers dominated offensively, finishing with an impressive 32 shots on goal while securing the shutout.
he Eatonville Lady Cruisers bounced back from a difficult road loss to Steilacoom with a 4-0 shutout victory over Clover Park on Wednesday, highlighted by two goals from Mila Behrendt and 32 shots on goal. Eatonville opened the week Monday at Steilacoom, where the Sentinels scored in the 11th minute and pulled away for a 6-0 victory. Toryn Amaral and Behrendt tested the Steilacoom goalkeeper with first-half opportunities. Behrendt also had a secondhalf shot turned away as the Cruisers continued battling despite the deficit.
Steilacoom added a goal in the 45th minute before scoring four more times. Eatonville goalkeeper Savannah McCandless finished with nine saves, five in the first half. The Lady Cruisers returned home Wednesday and quickly took control against Clover Park. Kate Lindquist opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Brynna Hashbarger doubled the lead in the 25th, finishing a pass from Amaral. Five minutes later, Behrendt converted an assist from Madi Berube to give Eatonville a 3-0 halftime advantage. Behrendt struck again early in the second half, scoring off a pass from Kalli
Olsen to complete her twogoal performance. Eatonville kept the pressure on throughout the match, putting 14 shots on frame before halftime and another 18 in the second half. McCandless and the Cruiser defense kept Clover Park off the scoreboard to secure the shutout. The victory gave Eatonville a strong response to Monday’s setback and showcased contributions from several players. The Lady Cruisers have just two matches next week, both on the road. Eatonville visits Steilacoom on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and Clover Park in Lakewood on Thursday, Oct. 22. Both matches begin at 7 p.m.
E
atonville went toe-to-toe with one of the state’s top-ranked teams Thursday night and landed the final blow. After being outscored 128-14 by the Cardinals over the previous two seasons, the Cruisers stunned 10thranked Franklin Pierce 34-26 at Franklin Pierce Stadium. The upset improved Eatonville to 5-2 overall and 3-2 in 2A South Puget Sound League play. Franklin Pierce entered averaging more than 360 rushing yards per game with its Power T offense. The Cardinals rushed for 432 yards, but Eatonville delivered two red-zone stops, an interception and four turnovers on downs. After struggling against the Power T the previous two seasons, Eatonville changed its defensive approach against Clover Park’s similar offense the week before and carried that scheme into Thursday’s matchup. “I don’t think any team plays their base defense against FP because of the uniqueness of their system and how good they are at it,” Eatonville coach Gavin Kralik said. “We just tried to run a scheme that utilized the strength of our kids, and the kids did all of the hard work associated with it.” Franklin Pierce struck first when quarterback Jeremiah Orcutt scored on a 15-yard keeper for a 6-0 lead.
Eatonville countered. Jacob Simons took a handoff on a jet sweep, pulled up and found Amari Samuel behind the defense for a 59-yard touchdown. Ben Bernt’s extra point gave Eatonville a 7-6 lead. Forrest Dolan answered with a 61yard touchdown run on fourth-and-1 for a 14-7 lead. Just 19 seconds later, Cole Fowler found Samuel for a 69yard touchdown to tie the game. Orcutt’s second touchdown run, this time from 12 yards, gave Franklin Pierce a 20-14 advantage late in the first quarter. Eatonville responded with a more methodical drive, using a series of body blows before Adam Ames dove into the end zone from 2 yards out. Bernt’s extra point put the Cruisers back in front, 21-20. Eatonville’s defense then landed punches. Samuel and Nash Sherrard stopped Orcutt a half-yard short on fourth down. Sherrard later intercepted Orcutt at the 5 and returned it to the 24 with less than 30 seconds left in the half. Franklin Pierce recovered an onside kick to open the second half, but Ryder Herbrand broke up a fourthdown pass. After the Cardinals intercepted Fowler near midfield, Eatonville made another fourthdown stop at its 30. The Cruisers then drove 70 yards in six plays, capped by Samuel’s 4-yard touchdown catch for a 28-20 lead.
Cruiser Tennis Carries Five-Match Winning Streak Into League Tournament By Skip Smith
T
he Eatonville Cruiser boys tennis team closed out the regular season with five consecutive victories, finishing 6-6 in league play after beating Washington, Foss and Franklin Pierce. Sam Patterson clinched a 3-2 win over Franklin Pierce on Oct. 16, rallying from a 5-1 second-set deficit to win 6-2, 7-6 at No. 2 singles. Jacob Golding and Jackson Rockey won 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Holden Hetland and Landen Davis won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3. Eatonville swept Foss 5-0 in its final home match Oct. 14. Exhibition sets allowed all
five seniors to participate. All three doubles teams won in a 3-2 victory over Washington. “We knew these players had the potential to win matches,” Coach Maryann Baker said. “We are very proud of the dedication and the growth this team has experienced.” The Cruisers compete in the 2A SPSL league tournament Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 21-22 at Clover Park High School.
Dolan scored from a yard out after an 11-play drive. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving Eatonville ahead 28-26 with 7:39 remaining. Cody Jumper recovered the ensuing onside kick. Fowler then hit Simons on a screen along the left sideline, and Simons followed his blockers before outracing the defense for a 55-yard touchdown and a 34-26 lead. The Cardinals drained nearly seven minutes off the clock and reached the Eatonville 1. With Franklin Pierce out of timeouts and the final seconds ticking away, Kralik said the Eatonville coaches made sure the defense understood every possible clock scenario. “We just communicated all of the potential scenarios with them out of timeouts,” Kralik said. “We wanted our kids to understand how the final seconds could play out.” On third-and-goal, Eatonville dropped Orcutt for a 1-yard loss as time appeared to expire. An injury timeout restored two seconds, but Franklin Pierce could not snap the ball before the clock restarted, sending Eatonville into celebration. Fowler completed 9 of 14 passes for 202 yards and three touchdowns. Samuel caught six passes for 181 yards and three scores, while Simons threw and caught a touchdown. Eatonville finished with 313 yards of total offense.
Eatonville’s Amari Samuel elevates over a Franklin Pierce defender to haul in his third touchdown reception Thursday night at Franklin Pierce Stadium. Samuel finished with six catches for 181 yards and three touchdowns, helping the Cruisers upset the 10th-ranked Cardinals. For Kralik, the upset validated the approach his players trusted after back-to-back losses earlier this season and two lopsided defeats against Franklin Pierce in previous years. “I think it just cements in our kids’ hearts and minds what they are capable of when they continue to
lean into positive habits and focus on process over outcomes,” Kralik said. “They are truly a very special team to coach.” Eatonville hosts Foss for Homecoming Friday at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
