In a hard-fought girls' soccer clash, the Eatonville Cruisers triumphed over the Tenino Beavers with a final score of 1-0 in a 1A Evergreen League

encounter. Mother Nature had her say in the match as the heavens opened up, drenching the players throughout most of the contest. But in the midst of the rain-soaked battle, it was Eatonville's Mary VanEaton who shone brightest, becoming

the hero of the night in the 59th minute with a perfectly executed penalty kick.

"This was a solid win,” said interim head coach Machaela Swartout. “We felt that we were

ear Savvy Senior, What is the best way to ensure my pets are taken care of after I’m gone? I have two dogs and a cat that are my fourlegged family, and I want to make sure they’ll be well taken care of after I die.

Solo Senior DEAR SOLO, It’s a great question. Every year, approximately 500,000 cats and dogs enter shelters when their pet parents experience an emergency or pass away. Without a proper plan in place for the future care of your pets, they are at risk of ending up in a shelter where they could be euthanized.

To avoid this terrifying scenario and ensure your furry family is cared for both physically and financially after you’re gone, you should consider including them in your estate plan. Talk to your attorney about how to insert them in your will or trust in accordance with your state’s laws. Here’s what you’ll need to do.

WILLS If you already have a will or are planning to make one, you could simply add in a trusted caretaker clause for your pets, along with

W

ould you know how to behave if you were presented to a king – what to wear, what to say, how to show proper respect? In our increasingly casual world, deferential respect can be a difficult concept to relate to. Most of us don’t have to bow or curtsy our way through life. We don’t have to be concerned with order of precedence and formal titles. We have been taught to believe we are just as good as the next person and to voice our opinions openly. We probably even feel entitled to criticize those holding the highest offices in the land. But God, who is as far above every human ruler as the heavens are above the earth (Isaiah 55:9), deserves not only our deferential respect but our reverence.

It’s impossible for us to fully grasp God’s complex nature, encompassing both infinite mercy and absolute judgment. The temptation, though, is to focus only on the more soothing side – God’s unconditionally love, Jesus as our best friend, the comfort of the Holy Spirit. These things are true and vitally important, but alone they form an incomplete picture. By thus limiting our view, we can lose sight of God’s incredible majesty. By ignoring God’s astonishing power to destroy as well as create, we may forget to hold Him in sufficient awe. By denying God’s position of absolute authority, we will fail to

show Him proper respect. If we are ever tempted to treat God too casually or question his right to rule, we should consult His words in Job. “Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? Brace yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer me. Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?

Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone, while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?” (Job 38:27) Only our Creator God has done these things. Therefore, only He is qualified to be in control. Not just because He’s all-powerful but because He’s good and holy and wise beyond measure (see Psalms 19:711). How fortunate that He, not any of us fatally flawed human beings, is in charge of the universe. How incredible that the King of Kings desires to be in relationship with us. We serve a holy and awesome God! Let us worship Him for His beautiful character – all sides of it – grateful to call Him our friend while remembering to give Him the deep reverence He deserves.

Cardinals spoil Cruiser homecoming

In a long-standing rivalry dating back to 1940, the Eatonville Cruisers took the field against the Orting Cardinals on their much-anticipated homecoming night.

The Cardinals delivered an imposing defensive performance, confounding the Eatonville Cruisers and ultimately leading to a 24-12 loss on their homecoming night.

This loss marked the conclusion of Eatonville's seven-game winning streak against their rivals.

Quarterback Hunter Klumpar found himself under constant pressure, scrambling throughout the game in an attempt to evade the Cardinal defenders. The lack of protection left Klumpar with limited opportunities to connect with open receivers. The Cruisers' run game was also stifled by the Orting defense, resulting in negative yardage for the team.

Ky Nation hauled in six passes for 176 yards and found the end zone with a spectacular 56-yard touchdown reception. Nation's speed were evident in his two long receptions.

On the defensive side, Max Henley had an outstanding game for Eatonville. He contributed with several impactful plays in the Orting backfield, including a pair of quarterback sacks and multiple tackles for losses.

Despite the challenges faced by Eatonville, they managed to win the turnover battle by recovering two Orting fumbles and holding their rivals to their lowest points scored in a game this season. However, the team also grappled with negative rushing yards overall, a costly interception, and a missed 27-yard field goal attempt. Even after Nation's impressive 77-yard catch and run, the drive resulted in a turnover on

downs at the 7-yard line.

Klumpar completed 16 of 25 passes for 270 yards, contributing two touchdowns and one interception to his team's effort.

At halftime, the homecoming festivities saw seniors Bennet Cole and Mallory McFadden crowned as Homecoming King and Queen, adding a touch of celebration to the night.

Eatonville now looks ahead to refocus on 1A Evergreen League play, with a crucial game against the Elma Eagles on the horizon.

This matchup carries significant playoff implications, and kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Thursday.

The Cruisers will aim to rebound from this loss and regain their momentum as they move forward in their season.

TENNIS The Eatonville Cruiser boy’s tennis team had an eventful week, highlighted by their victory over Life Christian Academy with a score of 3-2 Carl Lucas and Austen Quirie, the team's top singles players, exhibited impressive playing.

Their contributions were crucial in securing the team's hard-fought victory.

The excitement reached its peak in the match when the #1 doubles team, consisting of Brody Thirtyacre and AJ Lightfoot, emerged victorious in a dramatic 3rd set tiebreaker.

The momentum continued in the doubles category, with other doubles teams achieving wins through tiebreakers. The Nate

Goode and Jacob Golding team and the Jackson Rockey and Dana Bazan team secured victories for the team.

However, the week didn't end on a high note, as the Cruisers faced off against Cascade Christian, aiming to avenge an earlier 5-0 loss in the season. Unfortunately, the outcome remained the same, with the Cruisers experiencing another 5-0 loss.

VOLLEYBALL The Eatonville High School volleyball team has been facing a challenging period, marked by a recent string of losses. On Oct. 10, they took on Tenino and, despite their best efforts, ended up losing (3-1). Their difficulties continued on Oct. 14 when they faced Onalaska, experiencing another loss with a score of 3-0. These back-to-back losses have now put them in the midst of a five-game losing streak.

So, assuming we do not come to an agreement on a new contract, there will be no changes in services from 2023 to 2024 other than SPFR’s decision on where they are going to house their equipment and personnel.

As far as any potential changes that may happen in the future, the administration will not present a contract to the Town Council until citizens of the Town have had a chance to voice their opinions.

In my opinion, this is not a decision that belongs solely to the administration or the Town council; it is a decision that should be made with Town citizens’ input. The Town administration and council are doing our best to live up to our fiduciary duty to prudently spend taxpayer dollars which requires reanalyzing things like contracts periodically to ensure we are protecting and doing the right things for the citizens we represent. We want and need high quality fire and EMS

services and Town citizens should have a voice in how they would like those services to be provided. Rest assured that the Town will have high quality services and Town citizens will have a say when it comes to any new contract(s) that may be negotiated!

There are high quality options available to the Town for emergency medical services through private ambulance services who have very attractive contract price levels. The Town administration intends to: • Investigate all options, • Continue good faith negotiations with South Pierce Fire and Rescue.

• Consider the implications and possibility of annexation into SPFR District and • Continue seeking and valuing citizen input.

As we move forward with this very important issue, we are committed to keeping you, the public, informed and will be sending out periodic information to ensure that we keep you in the loop.

The rain may have poured down relentlessly, but so did the determination and skill of the Cruisers. VanEaton's precise penalty kick was the difference-maker in this intense showdown.

Goalkeeper Tierney Amaral recorded another shutout by handling the ball only a handful of times. Her consistent performance between the posts has proven to be a formidable asset to the team's defense.

Not content with just one win, the

Cruisers concluded their week with yet another 1-0 victory, this time over the 2A Rochester Warriors.

VanEaton continued to demonstrate her scoring prowess by finding the back of the net in the 25th minute, a lead that remained intact until the final whistle.

With these consecutive wins, the Eatonville Cruisers are riding a wave of success, boasting a four-game win streak as they enter the final stretch of the regular season. Currently, they find themselves in second place in the 1A Evergreen League, with all four of their remaining games slated against league opponents. These upcoming matches hold immense playoff implications, making them pivotal for the Cruisers as they strive to secure a coveted postseason spot. The stage is set for an exciting conclusion to the season, and the Cruisers are ready to rise to the occasion.

May 17, 1928 – September 11, 2023

Mercedes “Dee” Norene Palmer Baublits peacefully moved on to heaven on September 11, 2023, in Denver with family by her side. Born to Quaker parents Glenn Carey Palmer and Ora Norene Burns Palmer in Seminole, OK on May 17, 1928, she spent her childhood years on the Seminole Indian Reservation where her father was an Indian Agent. She later moved to Las Animas, CO where she met her future husband, Donald Baublits, marrying in September, 1949. She and Don moved their family from Colorado to Montana to Idaho before finally settling in her beloved Eatonville, WA in October, 1962. Her six children were raised on a 27-acre farm just outside of town. They all graduated from Eatonville High School and remained close by for most of their adult lives.

Dee was a faithful employee who worked a variety of local jobs: Malcom’s Grocery, the Eatonville School District, Kirk’s Pharmacy, operating a Home Daycare Center, and the short lived but memorable, DonDee’s Cafe.

But, her favorite place of employment was on Mount Rainier, working variously at Longmire, Paradise Inn, and Sunrise Lodge. She had a great rapport with customers and fellow employees alike, making lifelong friends.

Dee is predeceased by her husband Don, brother Dean Palmer and grandchild Kevin Iams. She is survived by her six children, Barbara (Dennis) Schatz, Beverly Wilson, David, Danial (Sheila), Thomas (Barb), and Tracy Baublits.

She is also survived by her beautiful 20 grand, and 41 great grandchildren. Dee was a beloved fixture around town and could always be found working her gardens and walking her dogs. She will be greatly missed.

Dee’s Celebration of Life will be held October 28, 2023, 2 pm at the Eatonville Baptist Church. Potluck reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the Eatonville Family Agency, POB 1764, Eatonville, WA 98328. Note on your check: Dee Baublits, and it will go to the Senior Citizen Activity Fund.
