he Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) has recognized Northwest Trek Wildlife Park with top honors in the 2026 Earned Media Excellence Award for its outstanding work using media to tell the story of the wildlife park’s 50th anniversary in July 2025. AZA announced this year’s award winners Sept. 30 during the AZA Honors and Awards Lunch at the association’s Annual Conference in Portland, Or. The annual awards recognize achievements by AZA-accredited facilities in areas ranging from conservation and animal care to facility design, volunteer engagement and communications. “Congratulations to the team at Northwest Trek for their hard work and dedication in achieving this remarkable recognition,” said Dan Ashe, president and CEO of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. “This award recognizes the best of the best in the global aquarium and zoo community. The work being done at Northwest Trek further strengthens the impact of our entire community and is something Washington state can be proud of.” Northwest Trek’s 50th anniversary media initiative transformed a milestone celebration into an opportunity to share the wildlife park’s conservation mission with a broad audience. Working with KING 5’s Evening Magazine, the Northwest Trek marketing and communications team developed an exclusive, long-form broadcast experience that brought together the park’s history, wildlife rehabilitation, animal care and conservation work. The campaign featured rescued orphaned cougar cubs and highlighted the expertise of Northwest Trek’s animal care and veterinary teams, while also sharing the story of the park’s 725-acre conservation landscape, its history and its ongoing commitment to protecting native wildlife. “Northwest Trek’s 50th anniversary gave us the opportunity to honor where we began and the conservation mission that continues to guide us every day,” said Alan Varsik, director of Northwest Trek Wildlife Park and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium. “I’m incredibly proud of our marketing and communications team, who work across both Northwest Trek and Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium to tell the remarkable stories of the animals in our care, the people who dedicate their lives to them and the conservation work happening every day. They’ve earned the trust of our media partners and, most importantly, our community, by telling those stories with authenticity and purpose.” The recognition comes as Northwest Trek continues its mission of connecting people with wildlife and wild places. Through its animal care, conservation, education and public engagement efforts, the wildlife park works to inspire people to protect native wildlife and the landscapes they call home. “Every story we tell is an opportunity to build a deeper connection between our community and the wildlife and wild places we’re working to protect,” Varsik said. “That trust is important to us, and this award is a wonderful recognition of the team that works every day to earn it.”
Eatonville running back Ben Smith powers through the Clover Park defense during Friday night’s 2A SPSL matchup at Harry E. Lang Stadium. Smith carried the ball nine times for 46 yards and scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns, helping the Cruisers build a 41-0 halftime lead on their way to a shutout victory over the Timberwolves. he Eatonville Cruisers were looking for answers after consecutive losses. They found plenty of them Friday night at Harry E. Lang Stadium. Eatonville scored touchdowns on six of its first seven possessions, rushed for 226 yards and delivered a dominant defensive performance in a 41-0 victory over Clover Park. The win snapped Eatonville’s two-game skid and improved the Cruisers to 4-2
overall and 2-2 in 2A South Puget Sound League play. It was their second shutout of the season. After struggling to stop the run against Fife the previous week, the Eatonville defense responded by swarming Clover Park’s Power I offense. The Cruisers repeatedly forced three-and-outs and recovered three fumbles while keeping the Timberwolves off the scoreboard. Eatonville wasted little time taking control.
On the Cruisers’ second play from scrimmage, quarterback Cole Fowler connected with Jacob Simons on a screen pass near the sideline. Simons followed his blockers into the open field and raced 70 yards for a touchdown. The extra point was blocked, giving Eatonville a 6-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game. Clover Park began its first possession at its own 35-yard line following a kickoff out

Ballots Arrive as November Election Approaches
W
Staff Report ith the Nov. 3 General Election approaching, local voters’ pamphlets are arriving in mailboxes across Pierce County, giving residents an opportunity to review candidates, ballot measures and voting instructions before ballots arrive. Pierce County mailed its 40-page local voters’ pamphlet Oct. 6, with delivery expected by Oct. 10. The pamphlet includes candidate statements, ballot drop box locations and
other election resources. A separate statewide pamphlet was also mailed to households. Voters will decide races for Pierce County auditor, prosecuting attorney and several County Council districts, alongside judicial positions and federal and state offices. Ballots also include statewide initiatives, county charter amendments and local funding measures affecting schools, emergency services and other public services. “The Voters Pamphlet is a great resource for voters. You get to hear from candidates in their own words. You can also read statements for and against ballot measures,” said Linda Kent, Pierce County chief deputy auditor. Ballots are scheduled to be mailed in mid-October, with voters expected to receive them between Oct. 13 and 17. Residents can vote as soon as their ballots arrive. Pierce County encourages early returns rather than waiting until Election Day. Completed ballots can be returned by mail without postage, provided they are postmarked no later than Nov. 3. Voters should mail them well ahead of the deadline to avoid potential postal delays. Official ballot drop boxes offer another option. They are available around the clock during the voting period and close promptly at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Dear Savvy Senior, I’m getting ready to start my Social Security retirement benefits and have two children at home, ages 17 and 15. I’ve heard they may also be eligible for benefits on my record while I’m collecting. Is that true, and if so, how does it work? How long would they receive benefits, and is there anything I need to do to apply for them? —Retiring Parent

Dear Retiring, es! If you’re 62 or older and raising kids, Social Security can put a little extra cash in your family’s pocket. Here’s how it works. When you claim your retirement benefits, each of your children may get up to 50 percent of your primary insurance amount (PIA), which is your benefit at full retirement age. Even if you take a reduced benefit by claiming early, your children’s payments are still based on your full retirement amount, which is 67 if you were born in 1960 or later. You can apply for your children’s benefits at the same time you file your own Social Security retirement claim, or separately afterward if needed, but doing it together is usually the simplest approach. To qualify, children must be unmarried and under 18. If they are 18 or 19 and still in high school, they can receive benefits until they graduate or reach age 19 years and two months, whichever comes first. If they work, the usual earnings test may apply. In 2026, Social Security reduces benefits by $1 for every $2 earned above $22,320. Special rules apply to children with disabilities. Since your youngest is 15, your spouse can also receive benefits on your record – even if she is under full retirement age. This is a “child-in-care” spousal benefit that is available when a spouse is caring for a child under 16. That benefit can be up to 50 percent of your PIA and ends when your
youngest child turns 16. It can be especially helpful in households where one parent has stepped back from work or is focused on caregiving. There is also a limit on how much Social Security can pay a family, called the family maximum, usually between 150 and 180 percent of your PIA. If total benefits exceed that amount, payments to family members (except yours) are reduced proportionally. For example, if your full retirement benefit is $3,000 per month, the family maximum might be around $5,289. That leaves $2,289 to divide among your children – about $1,144.50 each. If your spouse also qualifies, her benefit would further reduce the amount available to be shared, though the total family payment remains capped. Children can also receive benefits if a parent becomes disabled – usually up to 50 percent of the parent’s disability benefit – or if a parent dies, in which case they may receive up to 75 percent of the deceased parent’s basic benefit. These benefits won’t cover everything, but even modest support can make a meaningful difference for a family. KEEPING BENEFITS ON TRACK
Social Security automatically stops children’s benefits when they age out or graduate. Knowing when payments start and stop can help you plan your budget and make the most of this support. If your children’s circumstances change – such as graduating early, getting married, or starting full-time work – be sure to notify Social Security so payments stay accurate. For more details, see SSA Publication No. 05-10085, “Benefits for Children” at ssa.gov/pubs/EN-05-10085.pdf.

annah Bieker continued her strong run for the Eatonville cross country team Wednesday, Oct. 7, winning the girls race and helping the Cruisers capture the team title in a 2A South Puget Sound League meet at Orting High School. Bieker crossed the finish line first in 20 minutes, 59 seconds, improving on her winning time of 21:43 from Eatonville’s previous league meet. FOOTBALL, FROM 1 of bounds, but the Cruiser defense drove the Timberwolves backward and forced a punt. Taking over at midfield, Eatonville struck again when Fowler found Sam Kralik for a 31-yard touchdown. Eli Rath powered into the end zone for the 2-point conversion, extending the lead to 14-0 with 8:21 remaining in the first quarter. Ethan Rogers recovered a Clover Park fumble on the Timberwolves’ next possession, giving Eatonville the ball at the Clover Park 46. Ben Smith appeared to score on a 28-yard run, but a penalty erased the touchdown and the drive eventually ended on downs. The missed opportunity did little to slow the Cruisers. After another defensive stop, Ryder Herbrand returned a punt into Clover Park territory. Eatonville drove to the 1-yard line, where Smith plunged into the end zone to make it 20-0 with 10:03 remaining in the second quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, Clover Park fumbled again and Rath recovered at the Timberwolves’ 21. Smith soon found the end zone for the second time, weaving through the defense for a 19-yard touchdown. Ben Bernt added the extra point to push Eatonville’s advantage to 27-0. The Cruiser defense forced another three-and-out, and Herbrand returned the punt to the Clover Park 39. Fowler capped the next possession with a touchdown pass to Curtis Wright, giving Eatonville a 34-0 lead with 5:38 left before halftime. Amari Samuel helped set up the final score of the half by returning a punt to midfield. The Cruisers marched 50 yards, with Fowler keeping the ball for a 5-yard touchdown run. Bernt’s extra point gave Eatonville a commanding 41-0 lead with 42 seconds remaining. Fowler completed 7 of 12 passes for 152 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions. Five different Cruisers caught passes, led by Simons’ 70-yard touchdown. Kralik finished with two receptions for 34 yards and a score, while Wright added a touchdown reception. Eatonville also showed much-needed balance by running for 226 yards on 30 carries. Smith led the way with 46 yards and two touchdowns on nine attempts. Thirteen Cruisers recorded at least one carry as Eatonville finished with 378 yards of total offense. With Eatonville leading by more than 40 points, the running-clock rule went into effect for the second half. The Cruisers turned the game over to their reserves, who continued to keep Clover Park off the scoreboard. The Timberwolves’ best opportunity came in the fourth quarter when they reached the Eatonville 15, but Robert Morelles Jr. recovered a fumble at the Cruiser 17 to preserve the shutout. The backup offense then drove to the Clover Park 12 before Eatonville entered victory formation and ran out the clock. The Cruisers will travel to Franklin Pierce Stadium on Thursday, Oct. 15, for a crucial matchup against the firstplace Franklin Pierce Cardinals (5-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Eatonville’s Toryn Amaral sends the ball upfield during the Lady Cruisers’ hard-fought 1-1 draw against rival Orting at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. Amaral followed that performance with a standout effort against Washington, scoring the go-ahead goal in the 38th minute off a corner kick from June Irigoien. She also assisted on goals by Irelyn Evans and Mila Behrendt, finishing with a goal and two assists as Eatonville rallied from an early deficit to defeat the Patriots 4-1 on the road. Skip Smith
T
he Eatonville Lady Cruisers soccer team showed its resilience last week, rallying from early deficits in both matches to earn a draw against rival Orting before rolling to a 4-1 road victory over Washington. Eatonville opened the week Tuesday at home against Orting in a physical 2A South Puget Sound League matchup. The Cardinals struck first in the 21st minute, but the Cruisers battled back when Mila Behrendt converted a penalty kick to even the score at 1-1. Eatonville continued pressing for the winner, with Kate Lindquist and Ryleigh Chopic both putting quality shots on frame, but the Orting goalkeeper turned away their opportunities.
Goalkeeper Savannah McCandless finished with three saves as the Cruisers settled for the 1-1 draw. Eatonville carried that determination into Thursday’s road matchup against Washington, overcoming another early deficit to earn its second victory over the Patriots this season. Washington scored in the ninth minute, but Irelyn Evans answered in the 26th off an assist from Toryn Amaral to tie the match. The Cruisers grabbed the lead in the 38th minute when June Irigoien delivered a corner kick that Amaral finished, giving Eatonville a 2-1 halftime advantage. Ryleigh Chopic extended the lead in the 73rd minute off an assist from Behrendt before Amaral connected with Behrendt for the final goal in the 80th minute.
Amaral led the offensive effort with a goal and two assists, while Behrendt added a goal and an assist. McCandless recorded three saves in the victory. The 4-1 win completed a season sweep of Washington after Eatonville defeated the Patriots 3-0 earlier this season. After battling Orting to a draw, the Lady Cruisers closed the week with four unanswered goals against Washington, continuing to show progress as they move through their league schedule. The Lady Cruisers face a busy three-match schedule next week, beginning Monday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Steilacoom to face the Sentinels at 7 p.m. Eatonville returns home Wednesday, Oct. 14, to host the Clover Park Timberwolves at 7 p.m. at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field before closing out the week on the road against the Fife Trojans on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 7 p.m.
Hetland, Davis Rally to Help Cruisers Topple Steilacoom Skip Smith
E
atonville’s boys tennis team finished the week with a 3-2 home victory over Steilacoom on Thursday, Oct. 8, sweeping the doubles courts to defeat one of the league’s leading teams. Holden Hetland and Landon Davis delivered a comeback at No. 3 doubles, recovering from a firstset loss to win 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. Jacob Golding and Jackson Rockey won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles, while Blake Pool and Carsten Massier added a straight-set victory at No. 2. “We are most proud of this match win!” coach Maryann Baker
said. “We can see a glimmer of the rewards of all their hard work and growth this season. These young men are proud of themselves!” Doubles also supplied all three wins in Eatonville’s 3-2 nonleague victory over GrahamKapowsin. Golding and Rockey won 6-2, 6-1, Pool and Massier won 6-1, 6-3, and Hetland and Davis won 6-2, 6-1. Baker praised the new doubles combinations, citing Pool and Massier’s encouragement of each other and the way Hetland’s strong serves and deep shots created opportunities for Davis.
The Cruisers opened the week with a 5-0 loss to Fife on Monday, Oct. 5, but pushed two courts to three sets. Nate Diamond rallied at No. 2 singles before falling 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Hetland and Massier won their opening set at No. 2 doubles before losing 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Baker credited Eatonville’s focus against Fife, which entered tied for first in the league, and said the demanding competition continued to help singles players Will Fulmer and Diamond develop their games. Eatonville travels to Washington on Monday, Oct. 12, hosts Foss on Wednesday, Oct. 14, and visits Franklin Pierce on Friday, Oct. 16.
