year-long wait ended Friday night as Eatonville High School celebrated six individuals whose accomplishments and contributions have helped shape Cruiser athletics. The Eatonville High School Athletic Hall of Fame inducted its Classes of 2025 and 2026 during halftime of the Cruisers’ football game against Black Hills at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field on Friday Sept. 10th. Construction of the new stadium prevented the school from holding its traditional induction ceremony last year, so the Class of 2025 joined the Class of 2026 for a combined celebration Friday. The six inductees were Justin Kaelin, Lucas Hatton, Robert Rasmussen, Phil Nordstrom, Steve Carey and George Tomal, a group whose accomplishments span several decades and include state championships, school records, collegiate success and years of service to Eatonville athletics. Kaelin, a 2015 graduate, was a standout three-sport athlete in football, basketball and track and field. He earned first-team all-league football honors in 2013 and 2014 and was a first-team all-state selection and league MVP in 2014. His biggest accomplishments, however, came in the throwing events. Kaelin was a two-time state champion in the shot put and remains the school record holder in both the shot put at 59 feet, 5.5 inches and discus at 165-4. He also placed third in the discus at state as both a junior and senior, finishing his career with four state medals. Kaelin later attended College of the Siskiyous in California, where he played defensive end in football and competed in the shot put and discus. Hatton built his Hall of Fame credentials in football and track before going on to become one of the country’s top strength athletes. A four-year letterman and two-year captain in football, Hatton earned first-team honors on both the offensive and defensive lines and was named the league’s defensive MVP. He later played at Pacific Lutheran

University, earning first-team all-conference honors as a senior. Hatton was also a four-year letterman and two-year captain in track and field, winning six state medals. In 2013, he placed second at state in the shot put, discus and hammer. His interest in weightlifting eventually led to a career in strongman competition, including winning America’s Strongest Man and competing multiple times at the World’s Strongest Man competition. He now owns a powerlifting gym and coaches in Auburn. Rasmussen earned 11 varsity letters while competing in football, basketball and track for Eatonville. On the football field, Rasmussen was a first-team all-state wide receiver as a junior after catching 54 passes for 1,100 yards and 19 touchdowns. He later earned all-area honors as a defensive back and was part of four league championship teams, including Eatonville’s 1992 state championship squad. Rasmussen also lettered three years in basketball and four years in track, qualifying for state in three seasons. He placed sixth in both the 4x100 relay and long jump. Following graduation, Rasmussen played football at Trinity Bible College in North Dakota. While several of Friday’s inductees earned their place through accomplishments on the field, Nordstrom’s impact on Eatonville athletics has extended far beyond his own playing days. Described as “The Ultimate Cruiser,” Nordstrom played quarterback, basketball and baseball while attending Eatonville. After serving in the Air Force, including service in Vietnam, he returned home and spent decades supporting the community’s athletic programs. Nordstrom helped co-found the Eatonville Youth Sports Association, coached youth basketball and softball, helped drive the Cruiser Classic Golf Tournament, kept statistics for the Eatonville football program for more than 20 years and volunteered at local track meets.

Dear Savvy Senior, Since my dad passed away last year, my 82-year-old mother has struggled to keep up with her bills. She’s proud and insists on doing things herself, but I worry she’s falling behind. How can I help her manage her finances without upsetting her? —Concerned Daughter

Y

Dear Concerned, ou’re not alone – lots of adult children step in to help aging parents with their finances. Whether it’s paying bills, handling bank accounts, filing insurance claims, or sorting through taxes, taking on these responsibilities can feel tricky. The key is to approach it with respect, organization, and the right safeguards. Here’s how to help your mom without stepping on her independence.

If your mom is open to your help, the first step is getting organized. Make a clear list of her financial info, including monthly bills like utilities, phone, cable, and credit cards; bank and investment accounts; company benefits like retirement plans or pensions; insurance policies, including life, home, auto, long-term care, and Medicare; and copies of recent income tax returns. Having everything in one place will make managing her finances much smoother for both of you. LOCATE LEGAL DOCUMENTS

Now’s also a good time to see if your mom has essential legal papers: a will or trust, an advance directive with a living will and health-care proxy, and a

durable power of attorney for finances. If she doesn’t, now’s the time to get them in place. If she does, make sure they’re up to date and that you know where to find them. SIMPLIFY FINANCIAL TASKS

To make life easier for both you and your mom, set up automatic payments for her bills and have her income go straight into her bank account. If her accounts and investments are scattered, consider consolidating them – it makes everything much simpler. You can also get her banking and investment accounts online so you can pay bills and monitor everything anytime, without digging through papers or making extra trips. SET UP PROTECTIONS

Protect your mom from scams or risky spending. A True Link Visa Prepaid Card (truelinkfinancial.com/ prepaid-card) gives her access to her money but lets you set spending limits. Online monitoring services like Carefull (getcarefull.com) or EverSafe (eversafe.com) can watch her accounts, flag anything suspicious, and send alerts if something seems off. These tools give peace of mind while letting her maintain independence. SEEK OUTSIDE HELP

If you live far away or just need a hand, professional services can step in. SilverBills (silverbills.com) handles bill payments, while a certified daily money manager (aadmm.com) can come by once or twice a month to pay bills, make deposits, sort through health insurance statements, and keep everything organized. Think of them as extra hands to make life easier for both of you. Helping a parent manage finances takes patience, respect, and tact. With clear communication, organization, and the right safeguards, you can support your mom while keeping her independence and peace of mind intact. Notes from the Eatonville Town Council September 14th

T

he Eatonville Town Council met Sept. 14 following the cancellation of its Aug. 24 meeting during a power outage. Councilmembers considered two equipment purchases, postponed a decision on transferring a former pump-house building and heard plans that could keep the longrunning Rod Knockers car show tradition alive. Mayor Emily McFadden also announced changes ahead for the police department, including the Oct. 2 departure of Interim Chief Jeffrey Justman. See related story on Page 1.

COUNCIL POSTPONES PUMP-HOUSE TRANSFER

The council postponed action on a proposal to transfer a former town pump-house building to the owner of the land beneath it while councilmembers seek additional information about the cost of removing the structure. The town owns the building and improvements at 351 Madison Ave. S., while the underlying property is privately owned. A January 2025 valuation estimated the building’s fair market value at $1,600. Under the proposed agreement, the property owner would take the building as-is and assume responsibility for its maintenance, repair, security, environmental issues and eventual demolition or removal. No cash payment was proposed. A public hearing on the proposed transfer drew no comments. Councilmember Bill Dunn said he was not opposed to disposing of the building but wanted better documentation supporting the proposed no-cost transfer. During the discussion, McFadden said an informal estimate placed demolition at more than $10,000. Councilmembers ultimately voted to postpone the resolution until the next regular meeting and requested an official demolition estimate before making a decision.

TOWN PURCHASES UTILITY-LOCATING EQUIPMENT

The council approved the purchase of a groundpenetrating radar system for $30,777.49 to help Public Works locate and map underground infrastructure. Staff told councilmembers the town has limited information about the location, depth and type of some existing water and stormwater infrastructure. The equipment can create three-dimensional images of underground features and record location information that can be incorporated into the town’s mapping system. Councilmembers questioned the equipment’s accuracy and whether it would receive enough use to justify the purchase. Staff said the system had been demonstrated under several conditions and could reduce the town’s reliance on outside locating services, which can cost several hundred dollars per hour and require days of lead time. The purchase will be divided among the town’s electric, water, sewer and storm drain funds.

HALL OF FAME, FROM 1 He also played a major role in the modernization of Eatonville’s track in 1998 and has remained involved in efforts to improve the school’s athletic facilities ever since. Carey was one of Eatonville’s premier track athletes of the 1990s. After earning second-team all-league honors as a wide receiver and defensive back in football, Carey captured the 1995 state championship in the 400-meter dash. He also placed third in the 200 that year and third in the 400 in 1996. Carey held Eatonville school records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters and set a Pierce County League record in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.80 seconds.

VACUUM TRAILER APPROVED AFTER LENGTHY DEBATE

Councilmembers also approved the purchase of an $89,013.82 Ditch Witch vacuum trailer following an extended discussion over maintenance costs, disposal requirements and whether the purchase should first return to the Public Utilities Committee. The trailer uses vacuum excavation to expose underground utilities and perform smaller water, sewer and stormwater jobs. Staff said Eatonville has spent approximately $50,000 on contracted vacuum services during the past 19 months, although the smaller trailer would not eliminate the need to hire full-sized vacuum trucks for larger jobs. The Public Utilities Committee had previously declined to recommend the purchase, citing concerns about ownership and maintenance costs and requirements for handling material removed from storm drains. During the council meeting, staff said additional research had been conducted and that the trailer could initially be used for work that does not involve potentially contaminated stormwater material while disposal requirements continue to be worked out. The purchase is expected to be funded through Pierce County Flood Control Zone District Opportunity Funds rather than the town’s regular utility budgets.

ROD KNOCKERS TRADITION COULD CONTINUE

The annual Rod Knockers car show may continue under new organizers after longtime members told the council they no longer have enough people to put on the event. Brad and Danny Neil approached the council about taking over the approximately 30-year Eatonville tradition. The pair said they have organized a charity car show benefiting Good Samaritan Hospital’s medical oncology unit for the past five years and became interested after learning the Rod Knockers were stepping away. The new organizers are considering moving the show to later in July. Town officials directed them to coordinate with Town Hall on scheduling, street closures and other permitting requirements.

PUBLIC WORKS PROJECTS MOVE AHEAD

Town Administrator Eric Phillips reported that work along the Mashel River near the wastewater treatment plant is largely complete, with fencing, plantings and minor grading remaining. He said the project is slightly ahead of schedule and remains within budget. The town also received additional direction from the U.S. Department of Energy on its planned electrical intertie and backup-power project and has several weeks to submit requested information. Looking toward 2027, Phillips said he also plans to seek pricing for an inflow-and-infiltration study of Eatonville’s sewer collection system. The study would look for groundwater and stormwater entering sewer lines and contributing unnecessary flow to the wastewater system.

Named Eatonville High School Athlete of the Year for 1995-96, Carey went on to compete for Eastern Washington University. He was a member of the Eagles’ Big Sky Conference champion 4x400 relay team in 1998 and set a school record in the indoor 400. Tomal, a 2015 graduate, was another key member of one of Eatonville football’s most successful teams. As a running back, Tomal rushed 187 times for 1,308 yards and 15 touchdowns during his career and finished with 2,279 total yards of offense. Defensively, he recorded 155 solo tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery. Tomal was named Nisqually League MVP and earned first-team all-state honors at defensive back in 2014,

helping lead Eatonville to an 11-1 season and a berth in the state semifinals. He later attended College of the Siskiyous, where he competed in the javelin and served as captain of the track and field team, before earning a degree in resource conservation from the University of Montana. Friday’s ceremony gave Eatonville an opportunity not only to recognize two Hall of Fame classes, but also to connect generations of Cruiser athletics inside the school’s new stadium. From state champions and record holders to those who continued giving back long after their playing days were over, the six newest Hall of Fame members now have their names permanently attached to Eatonville’s athletic history.

WA Governor Takes Stand Against Parental Initiative Sarah Mizes-Tan KUOW

W

ashington Gov. Bob Ferguson has officially come out against a conservative-backed initiative to rewrite the state’s so-called “parents bill of rights” law. “It’s my strong sense that many Washingtonians aren’t aware of some of the facts around this initiative,” Ferguson said at a press conference Thursday morning. He joined other Democrats and pro-LGBTQ campaigners to speak out against Ballot Initiative 001, which asks voters to roll back changes the state Legislature made to the law last year. Those changes give schools more time to turn over materials like classroom curricula and other records to parents who request them, and keeps student’s medical and mental health records private. Campaigners who want to keep those changes say they’re meant to protect LGBTQ youth from abuse. Supporters of the initiative say it will strengthen communications between schools and parents. “Teachers, counselors, school leaders all know that partnering with parents is crucial, and the rhetoric from this initiative is politically charged,” said state Rep. Monica Stonier (D-Vancouver), who was one of the lead sponsors of the changes made to the “parents bill of rights” last year. “Let’s Go Washington’s focus on demonizing schools hasn’t changed, but this time it’s resulted in a law that is

so badly written that it takes away some of those parental rights.” Let’s Go Washington and its founder Brian Heywood are behind the initiative to roll back the law. “ I think that parents are first the primary stakeholders in raising their kids. That’s number one. And this seeks to restore that,” Heywood said. “There is this responsibility that’s given to schools and to teachers to watch over and and educate our kids during the day, and to have a side that’s excluding parents from that process by keeping secrets from them destroys the very trust that is required to do what’s in the best interest of the child.” Heywood was also responsible for bringing an earlier version of this law before the legislature in 2024. The original 2024 version said parents should get copies of their children’s school records within 10 days of requesting them; subsequent changes allowed for more time. The Seattle Times editorial board recently noted that Heywood’s new initiative lifts language directly from an existing law in Louisiana and called out a section on reporting abuse in schools. Washington’s current law requires that parents be notified of abuse at school as soon as a report is filed, but the initiative proposes vague wording that recommends notifying a parent as soon as criminal action is “deemed to have been committed.” “I’m speaking partly as a governor, of course, but also as a father of two teenagers who cares

deeply about protecting parents’ rights,” Ferguson said. “Initiative 001 — no matter how hard the other side tries to spin it — it actually weakens existing laws by removing parents’ rights.” Let’s Go Washington argues that its initiative would give parents more control over their children’s records, saying that the new wording “expressly gives parents the right to receive immediate notification if a criminal action is deemed to have been committed against their child or by their child.” The group says parents would receive information more quickly with their initiative’s rewrite. Heywood himself has said that he believes the opposition is “splitting hairs” on the wording.

Pierce County Eases Burn Ban Staff Report

S

mall recreational fires are allowed again in unincorporated Pierce County, but restrictions on yard debris and land-clearing fires remain in place. Pierce County has eased its summer burn restrictions from Stage 2 to Stage 1 as cooler, wetter weather reduces wildfire risk. The change means residents in unincorporated Pierce County can once again have small recreational fires in approved fire pits. Gas, charcoal and wood barbecues also remain allowed. The burn ban, however, is not over. Under Stage 1, burning yard debris and land-clearing materials remains prohibited. Residents planning other types of outdoor burning should check with their local fire district, as a permit may be required. The biggest difference between the two stages is recreational fires. Stage 2, which took effect Aug. 17, prohibited essentially all outdoor burning, including backyard fire pits, fireplaces and recreational fires. Stage 1 allows those smaller fires to resume while

CHIEF, FROM 1 the position and explore additional recruitment efforts. Justman said employment agreements are common for police chiefs and that he was not comfortable taking the position without one. The Dispatch contacted McFadden seeking information about the town’s decision, whether former Chief Jason Laliberte had an employment agreement and how the department will be led after Justman’s departure. She had not responded as of Sunday afternoon. Laliberte retired in June after seven years as Eatonville’s chief. At the time, the town

keeping restrictions on larger debris and land-clearing burns. Recreational fires must still follow county safety rules. They can be no larger than 3 feet wide and 2 feet tall, must be in a designated fire pit at least 25 feet from structures and must be continuously attended with a way to extinguish the fire nearby. Only dry seasoned firewood, manufactured logs or charcoal may be burned. The county’s Stage 1 restrictions currently align with Washington’s statewide burn ban, which is scheduled to remain in place through Sept. 30, although that date could change depending on fire conditions. Pierce County uses the state’s timeline as guidance when deciding when to lift its own restrictions. The county restrictions apply to unincorporated Pierce County. Residents within incorporated cities and towns should check with their local jurisdiction because requirements may differ. The really simple distinction for a reader is: Stage 2 meant no backyard fire pit. Stage 1 means the fire pit can come back, but the burn pile still can’t.

reported that Justman would become interim chief following “two years of mentoring and significant training” under Laliberte. Justman said Laliberte had been preparing him to take over leadership of the department, and he had considered continuing in the role permanently. Instead, he said the larger Pierce County agency offers professional opportunities suited to his background, which includes specialized training in hostage and crisis situations. He does not yet know where in the county he will be assigned. Justman described leaving Eatonville as being done

with a “heavy heart,” calling it an incredible community. He said he hopes his work with the Sheriff ’s Office may eventually provide an opportunity to serve the Eatonville area again. Meanwhile, the town is attempting to hire another officer. McFadden said a lateral candidate has passed a background investigation and was scheduled for a polygraph examination. With Justman leaving Oct. 2 and no applicants for permanent chief, McFadden said town officials would begin working on how to handle the department’s leadership.

”If I’m a school administrator and I realize something’s happened to a kid, I’m calling a parent, right? That’s what my law allows them to do,” he said. LGBTQ activists have also argued that this initiative could “out” students to their parents before they wish, which could lead to dangerous situations at home. “In middle school, I lived alone with my mother, who subjected me to physical abuse and neglect due to mental health issues and alcohol abuse. I felt alone, struggled academically, and did not know where to run for support,” Gabriel Neuman, an LGBTQ advocate and transgender man, said, adding that he worried that the new initiative

could put hundreds of students at higher risk for abuse at home. “I opened up the moment the school counselor assured me that our meetings were confidential.” Let’s Go Washington has said their initiative does not require a school to notify a parent if their child is LGBTQ+ or transgender. But the initiative does expand parental access to records if a child is receiving medical care, and it will allow parents to access students’ mental health records. It could also allow for parents to see more information regarding a student’s gender identity. If voters pass the initiative the state Legislature would have to wait two years before it could amend the new law in any way.

Samuel’s 370-Yard Night, Fowler’s Four Touchdowns Lead Cruisers to Victory By Skip Smith

mari Samuel piled up 370 all-purpose yards, caught three touchdown passes and created two turnovers on defense as Eatonville opened 2A South Puget Sound League play with a 53-18 victory over Steilacoom on Thursday night. Playing in front of a packed crowd at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field, the Cruisers improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league play. Samuel provided a spark before Eatonville’s offense even took the field, returning the opening kickoff to the Steilacoom 26-yard line. Two plays later, quarterback Cole Fowler found Samuel on a quick pass to the outside. Samuel shook off a defender and raced up the sideline for a 23-yard touchdown. Ben Bernt converted the extra point to give Eatonville a 7-0 lead just 51 seconds into the game. Steilacoom answered with a long drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown reception by Justin Chang. Jacob Simons blocked the extra-point attempt, allowing Eatonville to hold a 7-6 lead with 2:58 remaining in the first quarter. The Cruisers began pulling away in the second quarter. Ben Smith capped Eatonville’s second possession by carrying the ball, along with a Steilacoom defender, into the end zone. Bernt’s extra point extended the lead to 14-6. After the Eatonville defense forced a three-and-out, Fowler led the Cruisers to the Steilacoom 7 before the drive stalled. Bernt came on and connected on a 23yard field goal, giving Eatonville a 17-6 advantage with 4:20 remaining in the half. Steilacoom’s next possession ended when the Sentinels turned

Fowler immediately connected with Samuel for a 29yard gain, setting the Cruisers up at the Steilacoom 20. Smith took the handoff on the next play and rumbled around the outside for his second touchdown of the night. Eatonville’s defense then came up with another big play when Sam Kralik intercepted Steilacoom quarterback Titus Kaeka at the Cruiser 18-yard line with 38 seconds remaining in the half. The Cruisers only needed one play to turn the interception into points. Fowler connected with Samuel on a screen pass to the right, and Samuel followed blocks from

Adam Ames, Brett Hutchings, Van Turnage and Zach Perdue before racing 82 yards for the touchdown. Bernt’s extra point gave Eatonville a 31-6 lead with 23 seconds remaining. Steilacoom nearly answered before halftime, moving the ball to the Eatonville 5 with one second left. The Cruiser defense held on the final play, keeping the Sentinels out of the end zone. Samuel continued making plays after halftime. He recovered a fumble on Steilacoom’s opening possession, giving Eatonville the ball at its own 27. Three plays later, Fowler connected with Samuel again, this

time for a 63-yard touchdown. Samuel outraced the defense for his third score of the night, extending Eatonville’s lead to 37-6 with 7:51 remaining in the third quarter. Hayes Sherrard intercepted Kaeka on Steilacoom’s next possession, but the Sentinels got the ball back when an incomplete pass intended for Ames was ruled a fumble. Steilacoom took advantage of the turnover with a 69-yard scoring drive capped by Chang’s 5-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, leaving Eatonville ahead 37-12. The Sentinels added another touchdown early in the fourth

quarter when Kaeka found Jordan Smith for a 2-yard score. Another unsuccessful two-point attempt kept the Cruisers’ lead at 37-18. Eatonville answered with a drive to the Steilacoom 8, where Bernt converted a 27-yard field goal to push the lead to 40-18 with 6:55 remaining. After the defense forced another turnover on downs, Fowler found Simons on a curl route along the left side. Simons broke a tackle and raced up the sideline for a 45yard touchdown. Samuel delivered one final big play on Steilacoom’s next possession. He intercepted Kaeka at the Eatonville 5 and returned the ball 80 yards to the Sentinel 15. A few plays later, Eli Rath powered into the end zone from 6 yards out to complete the scoring. Eatonville compiled 509 yards of total offense, 123 yards on the ground and 386 through the air in the victory. Fowler completed 13 of 18 passes for 386 yards, four touchdowns and one interception. Samuel caught six passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns, while Simons added three receptions for 78 yards and a score. Colston Bruun led the Cruisers’ rushing attack with 51 yards on 14 carries. Smith added 42 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries, while Rath finished with 10 yards and a touchdown on two carries. Samuel, Kralik and Hayes Sherrard each recorded an interception as Eatonville forced four Steilacoom turnovers. The Cruisers will hit the road for the first time this season when they travel to Franklin Pierce Stadium to face the Washington Patriots (0-3) on Friday, Sept. 25. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Mccandless’ 13 Saves Help Lady Cruisers Blank Washington By Skip Smith

he Eatonville Lady Cruisers soccer team bounced back in a big way last week, using three different goal scorers and another strong performance in goal from Savannah McCandless to shut out the Washington Patriots 3-0 in 2A South Puget Sound League action. After dropping their league opener to rival Orting the previous week, the Lady Cruisers returned home Tuesday, Sept. 15, looking to get into the win column at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. Eatonville broke through in the 19th minute when Mila Behrendt stepped to the penalty spot and calmly converted the penalty kick to give the Cruisers a 1-0 advantage. They didn’t have to wait long to strike again. Just two minutes later, Toryn Amaral delivered a well-placed free kick into the back of the net, quickly extending Eatonville’s lead to 2-0. Madi Berube later joined the scoring, finishing off an assist from Kalli Olsen to give the Cruisers their third goal of the night.

Eatonville continued to apply pressure throughout the match, putting eight additional shots on frame and keeping the Washington defense busy. While the offense was finding success at one end of the field, McCandless and the Eatonville defense made sure Washington couldn’t answer at the other. McCandless recorded 13 saves to preserve the shutout and earn another clean sheet for the Lady Cruisers. It continued an impressive stretch in goal for McCandless, who recorded 16 saves in Eatonville’s 1-1 draw with Rochester and another 15 in the loss to Orting the previous week. The victory improved Eatonville to 2-1-1 overall and 1-1 in 2A SPSL play. The Lady Cruisers were scheduled to travel to Tacoma on Thursday, Sept. 17, to face Foss, but the match was canceled because the Falcons did not have enough players to field a team. Eatonville will now enjoy a full week at home. The Lady Cruisers will host the Fife Trojans on Tuesday, Sept. 22, before welcoming the Steilacoom Sentinels later in the week. Both matches are scheduled for 7 p.m. at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field.

Eatonville goalkeeper Savannah McCandless prepares to defend a shot against Washington during the Lady Cruisers’ 3-0 victory Tuesday night at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. McCandless recorded 13 saves to preserve the shutout.

Take a Free Trip to a Washington State Park Sept. 26 Staff Report

S

CLOVERCITY

aturday, Sept. 26, might be a good day to pack a lunch, grab a pair of walking shoes and explore somewhere new. In celebration of National Public Lands Day, Washington is waiving the Discover Pass requirement at state parks and other state-managed recreation lands for the day. It is one of 12 free days scheduled in Washington for 2026. The waiver covers more than 100 state parks, along with hundreds of recreation sites, water-access areas, natural areas and wildlife areas managed by Washington State Parks, the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Fish and Wildlife. Normally, visitors parking at those lands need a $10 one-day Discover Pass or a $45 annual pass. The Sept. 26 free day removes that parking requirement, although camping, boat launches and other activity fees still apply. The nearest state park would ordinarily be an obvious choice. Nisqually State Park sits just outside town on Mashel Prairie Road, where the Nisqually and Mashel rivers and Ohop Creek come together. But visitors will have to wait a little longer to explore it. Nisqually State Park remains completely closed while work continues on the developing park. State Parks asks visitors not to enter during construction for their own safety and that of construction crews. There is plenty happening beyond the gates. The long-term development includes trails to the Nisqually River, river overlooks, an interpretive plaza created in partnership with the Nisqually Indian Tribe, a welcome center and an accessible multi-use trail overlooking the Mashel River Valley. When the larger trail plan is completed, the park is expected to offer approximately 13.2 miles of trails for different types of users. Current construction on utilities, the welcome center and the Mashel River Valley overlook is expected to continue through winter 2026. The park remains closed until further notice, and State Parks has not posted a new reopening date. This National Public Lands Day may be an opportunity to explore a little farther from home.

HEAD SOUTH TO IKE KINSWA

Near Silver Creek, Ike Kinswa State Park spreads across 454 acres of forest along the shore of Mayfield Lake. The park is open year-round from 8 a.m. to dusk and offers an easy mix of activities for visitors who want a full day outside without committing to a major hike. There are 1.5 miles of hiking and biking trails, a playground and 52 first-come, first-served picnic tables. Visitors can walk through the forest, relax along the lake or bring a picnic and make the outing as ambitious or easygoing as they want. For those willing to get on the water, Mayfield Lake opens up considerably more options. The park is popular for kayaking, paddling, boating and swimming, while anglers can find rainbow trout, kokanee, largemouth bass and tiger muskie. A watercraft launch is available, although the $7 launch fee is separate from the Discover Pass and still applies on free days. State Parks also warns boaters that the launch currently ends in a roughly 10-inch drop where material

has washed out from the base of the concrete ramp. Visitors hoping for a campfire should also check conditions before leaving home. As of Sept. 18, Ike Kinswa is under a Level 2 burn ban. Wood fires are restricted to designated fire pits, gas and propane are allowed and charcoal may be restricted. Fire conditions can change quickly.

TURN A LIBRARY CARD INTO A PARK PASS

National Public Lands Day isn’t the only way to explore Washington’s state parks without buying a Discover Pass. Pierce County Library System participates in Check Out Washington, a statewide program that allows library cardholders to borrow special Discover Passes. The passes can be checked out for one week at a time and provide the same day-use parking access to Washington State Parks and participating DNR and WDFW lands. Pierce County Library System also participates in the program’s Adventure Packs,

which pair a Discover Pass with binoculars and guides for identifying Washington birds, wildlife, trees and plants. The program has proven popular. Check Out Washington passes were borrowed more than 9,000 times statewide in 2024, and the program distributed 500 passes among 176 libraries in 15 library systems the following year. There is one important limitation: a borrowed Discover Pass won’t get you into Mount Rainier National Park. The Discover Pass covers Washington’s state-managed recreation lands, not federal lands such as Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks. If Sept. 26 doesn’t work, there are still two more chances to skip the Discover Pass this year. World Mental Health Day on Oct. 10 and Veterans Day on Nov. 11 are the final two free days of 2026. And with a library card, there is no need to wait for either. Nisqually State Park may still be behind construction gates this fall, but there is plenty of Washington beyond them to explore.
