Emergency Calls Continue to Climb at Fire District 23
Rural department manages growing demand with a small paid staff and volunteer firefighters
SOUTH PIERCE FIRE AND RESCUE
Pierce County firefighters work with neighboring agencies to rescue a horse stuck in a creek. The rescue is one example of the wide range of emergencies handled by local fire crews as District 23 continues to see its overall call volume rise.
E
mergency calls continue to rise at Pierce County Fire District 23, extending a longer-term trend that is putting more demand on the rural department. Through Aug. 31, the district had responded to 321 calls, well
above its historical average of 211 through the same point in the year. Another 26 calls were recorded by Sept. 12. Fire Chief Matt Medford said the increase is noticeable, but not entirely new. Aside from an unusually busy 2021, annual call
totals have followed a fairly steady upward trend in recent years. What is driving that growth is less certain. Medford suspects several factors may be contributing, including the growth of short-term rentals bringing more visitors into the
Upper Nisqually Valley and higher travel costs keeping residents closer to home. He said colleagues at other fire districts have reported similar increases. The types of calls District 23 receives have remained largely consistent. Medical emergencies continue to make up roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the department’s workload. Through August, 217 of the district’s 321 calls were for emergency medical services. For a rural department, however, even modest growth can consume significant staff time. A typical ambulance response takes about three hours and 15 minutes, Medford said. Roughly two hours of that can be spent driving between the station, the emergency scene, the hospital and back. District 23 covers about 67 square miles, including Ashford, Elbe, Alder and Big Creek. The strain is most apparent when calls overlap. Medford said the department’s busiest day this year brought seven calls, including two instances when emergencies came in close succession. Mutual
aid was requested both times, though District 23 ultimately was able to handle the calls and cancel the requests. The district operates with Medford, two additional paid firefighters and a largely volunteer force. To help manage the growing workload, District 23 is exploring greater use of partnerships with Riverside Fire & Rescue and South Pierce Fire & Rescue. Those arrangements give firefighters from neighboring agencies additional experience while providing District 23 with extra staffing when needed. The department’s workload also shifts with the seasons. Summer tends to bring more fire and trauma calls, while fall typically brings more illness-related medical responses. Medford is hopeful that wetter weather will reduce fire activity in the coming weeks. Whether overall emergency call volume will follow remains to be seen. For District 23, the larger concern is not a single unusually busy season, but a steady increase in calls that requires a small rural department to do more each year.

atonville High School celebrated generations of athletic excellence Friday, September 4, during the first football game at the new Arrow Lumber Stadium and B.W. Lyon Field, recognizing five individuals whose achievements have left a lasting mark on Cruiser athletics and Washington state high school sports. The special recognition was coordinated by Eatonville High School Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Gavin Kralik and announced from the stadium press box by Dan Fountain. Similar to a Ring of Honor found in collegiate and professional stadiums, the recognition highlighted individuals whose accomplishments represent significant and historic moments in Eatonville High School athletics. Honored were longtime football coach Steve Gervais and former Cruiser athletes Brandon Jumper, Tom Zurfluh, Bobby Lucht and Jenny Baker. The recognition was especially fitting for the historic evening as the Eatonville community gathered for the first football game played at the newly completed stadium and field. Coach Steve Gervais served as Eatonville High School’s head football coach from 1977 through 1992. During his tenure, he led the Cruisers to three state
championships in 1985, 1990 and 1992. Gervais later went on to win three additional state championships at Skyline High School, concluding his coaching career with more than 250 victories and six state titles. Brandon Jumper was a standout Cruiser running back from 1984 through 1987 and a member of Eatonville’s 1985 state championship team. Jumper completed his Eatonville career as the all-time leading rusher in Washington state history with 5,910 rushing yards. Tom Zurfluh completed his high school career as the number-one kick scorer in Washington state history and established the state record for points scored by a kicker in a single season. One of the defining moments of his career came during the 1992 state semifinal when his gamewinning field goal in double overtime sent Eatonville to the state championship game. Zurfluh also earned an extraordinary 14 varsity letters during his time as a Cruiser. Bobby Lucht, a three-time All-State quarterback, established the Washington state record for career passing touchdowns with 132. At the time, the total also established a national high school record. Lucht finished his Eatonville career with 8,938 passing yards and helped lead the Cruisers to the 1992 state football championship.

Eatonville High School Honors Five Athletic Legends During Historic Stadium Opener
Steve Gervais, Brandon Jumper, Tom Zurfluh, Bobby Lucht and Jenny Baker at Arrow Lumber Stadium at the September 4th stadium opening celebrations. Jenny Baker represented another chapter of Eatonville’s championship tradition on the soccer field. A three-time All-State selection and two-time State Player of the Year, Baker helped lead the Cruisers to the 2005 state soccer championship. She finished her high school career with 146 goals, ranking third in Washington state history across all classifications, and was named an NSCAA High School All-American in both 2004 and 2005. What distinguished Friday night’s honorees was not simply their success within Eatonville, their league or their respective classifications. Their career accomplishments placed them among the
most accomplished high school athletes in Washington state history across all classifications. Together, their records, championships, leadership and contributions span decades of Cruiser athletics and reflect a tradition of excellence that continues to connect generations of Eatonville students, alumni and community members. Recognizing Gervais, Jumper, Zurfluh, Lucht and Baker during the inaugural football game at Arrow Lumber Stadium and B.W. Lyon Field provided an opportunity to celebrate Eatonville’s athletic past while marking the beginning of a new chapter for future generations of Cruisers. Once a Cruiser, always a Cruiser.

Dear Savvy Senior, I’m retired and was a victim of identity theft a while back. I’ve already frozen my credit to protect myself, but I recently heard that I can also “lock” my Social Security number. What exactly does that mean, and is it something I should do? —Recently Scammed
F
Dear Recently, reezing your credit was one of the smartest steps you could take after identity theft. But there’s another layer of protection many people don’t know about: limiting how your Social Security number (SSN) can be used. While you can’t actually “lock” your Social Security number the way you can freeze a credit report, you can block two of the most common ways criminals misuse it – using it to get a job and gaining access to your online Social Security account. Your Social Security number is the master key to much of your financial life. It’s linked to your taxes, Social Security benefits, Medicare, banking and employment records. With data breaches becoming routine and identity thieves using increasingly sophisticated tactics – including AI-generated scams – protecting your SSN is more important than ever. Criminals don’t need your Social Security card; they only need the number. E-VERIFY SELF LOCK

The first tool is E-Verify Self Lock. It prevents someone from using your SSN to get a job with employers that participate in the federal E-Verify system. If someone uses your Social Security number to get a job, the wages they earn may be reported to the IRS under your name. That can trigger IRS notices, delay tax refunds and require months of work to correct your tax and Social Security records. To activate Self Lock, create a free myE-Verify account at e-verify.gov and answer a few identity-verification questions. Once the lock is in place, employers using E-Verify won’t be able to confirm your Social Security number unless you first remove the lock. It remains in effect for one year and can be renewed annually. If you ever return to work for an employer
that uses E-Verify, you can temporarily remove the lock online and reactivate it afterward. ELECTRONIC ACCESS BLOCK
The second protection is the Social Security Administration’s Electronic Access Block, which helps prevent criminals from taking over your online Social Security account. An Electronic Access Block disables online and automated telephone access to your Social Security record – including your own. That prevents scammers from changing your direct deposit information, redirecting your benefits or updating your personal information. To set it up, call the Social Security Administration at 800-772-1213 or visit your local Social Security office and request an Electronic Access Block. If you later want online access restored, you’ll need to verify your identity before the block can be removed. For many retirees – especially those who’ve already experienced identity theft – that extra step is well worth the added security. EXTRA SAFEGUARDS
A credit freeze remains one of the best defenses against identity theft, but it only prevents someone from opening new credit in your name. It won’t stop someone from using your Social Security number for employment or trying to access your Social Security account. For even greater protection, create your personal my Social Security account before a scammer does by visiting ssa.gov/myaccount. Keep your credit reports frozen unless you need to apply for credit, and request a free IRS Identity Protection PIN. The sixdigit PIN acts like a second password for your tax return, preventing someone else from filing under your Social Security number. You can get one by searching “Get an IP PIN” at irs.gov. Identity theft has become a fact of modern life, but taking a few simple steps now can help protect your Social Security benefits, tax records and financial future, and give you greater peace of mind.

DOL2Go Brings Licensing Services to Eatonville Oct. 1
Staff Report
R
esidents who need a new driver’s license or identification card will have a chance to take care of it closer to home when Washington’s mobile licensing program comes to Eatonville next month. The Washington State Department of Licensing’s DOL2Go team will be at the Eatonville Community Center on Thursday, Oct. 1, bringing many of the services normally available at a driver licensing office directly to the community. Eatonville Family Agency is reminding residents that advance registration is required and the window to sign up is getting short. By the time this edition reaches readers, there will be roughly a week and a half remaining to register for the event. Services available in Eatonville will include standard driver’s licenses and identification cards, as well as Enhanced Driver Licenses and Enhanced ID cards. DOL2Go was created to make in-person licensing services more accessible for people who
may have difficulty getting to a traditional licensing office. The mobile program travels to rural communities, community centers, tribal communities, assistedliving facilities and other locations around Washington. The mobile program can handle first-time Washington licenses and IDs, including enhanced versions, along with renewals and transfers from another state. DOL2Go can also provide driving records, reinstatement letters and document reviews for proof of identity. Knowledge and driving skills tests are not available through the mobile program. For residents considering an enhanced license or ID, the Oct. 1 visit is also an opportunity to obtain identification that meets federal REAL ID requirements. Washington’s enhanced credentials can be used for purposes such as domestic air travel and entering certain federal facilities. An Enhanced Driver License or Enhanced ID can also be used to return to the United States by land or sea from Canada, Mexico and some Caribbean countries.
Enhanced credentials require applicants to provide additional documentation establishing identity, citizenship, Social Security number and Washington residency. Residents planning to apply should check DOL’s document requirements ahead of the event to make sure they arrive with everything needed. DOL2Go events accept credit and debit cards for payment. Since launching in 2023, the mobile program has expanded as a way to bring state services directly into communities. By late 2025, DOL reported that DOL2Go had served more than 9,900 Washington residents at 221 events and issued more than 7,300 licenses and identification cards. Residents who want to use the Oct. 1 DOL2Go event at the Eatonville Community Center must register in advance. Eatonville Family Agency is encouraging those who need licensing or identification services to reserve a spot before registration closes. Register for the Oct. 1 event: https://forms. gle/27mJxUcNXZRrsbF69

Washington Faces Another Budget Squeeze as Reykdal Seeks Billions Staff Report
W
ashington’s next state budget is already shaping up as a fight over what the state can afford to cut and what it cannot afford to leave underfunded. State Superintendent Chris Reykdal is asking lawmakers and Gov. Bob Ferguson for nearly $2 billion in additional publicschool funding in the 2027-29 budget, arguing Washington is again falling short of its constitutional obligation to amply fund basic education. At the same time, state agencies are preparing for another round of reductions as Washington faces a projected budget shortfall. One program serving families of children with developmental disabilities has already faced the prospect of elimination as agencies look for savings. Together, the competing pressures provide an early look at the choices lawmakers will face when they return to Olympia next year.
SCHOOLS SAY COSTS ARE OUTPACING FUNDING
Of Reykdal’s nearly $2 billion request, about $1.2 billion would address what his office considers underfunding of constitutionally protected basic education. The proposal includes more than $870 million over two years for materials, supplies and operating costs, with much of that intended to address rising insurance and utility bills. It also includes $100 million for substitute teachers, costs currently borne by school districts, and nearly $225 million to improve compensation for classified employees and paraeducators. Reykdal is also seeking to restore funding cut from Transition to Kindergarten and change how additional resources are distributed to schools serving students experiencing poverty. “We fundamentally believe that we are no longer being amply funded, that the constitution is not being met and the Supreme Court order in McCleary is not being met,” Reykdal said while announcing the request. A record 11 school districts are now operating under binding conditions, an arrangement that places their day-to-day finances under increased state oversight. Meanwhile, roughly 130 districts participating in a risk management program were notified that electricity rates would increase an average of 45% this school year.
LOCAL DISTRICTS SAY THE MATH ISN’T WORKING
The concerns are not limited to Olympia. Puget Sound Educational Service District, which represents school systems across the region, says inflation, enrollment changes,
unfunded mandates and structural limitations in Washington’s funding system have created an “unsustainable fiscal environment.” Its 2026 legislative priorities call for increased state funding for materials, supplies and operating costs, student transportation and special education, several of the same areas targeted by Reykdal’s new proposal. “Immediate legislative attention is required to uphold the State’s constitutional obligation to fully fund basic education,” the regional position states. For districts in Pierce County, gaps between state allocations and actual expenses can end up being filled with local tax dollars. Franklin Pierce School District says its voter-approved Educational Programs and Operations levy pays for approximately 15% of its day-to-day operations. The district says levy dollars support more than 200 staff positions, including teachers, nurses, counselors, librarians, paraeducators and safety staff. Local money also helps fund special education, multilingual programs, classroom materials, early learning, arts and other services the district says are not fully funded by the state. The district tells voters directly that “Washington state funding does not cover the full cost of running schools.” That distinction is important to Reykdal’s argument. Local levies are intended to supplement state funding, but if districts are using those dollars to cover costs that qualify as basic education, Reykdal contends the state is not fulfilling its responsibility.
THE STATE IS ALSO LOOKING FOR SAVINGS
Finding another $2 billion for schools will not be easy. Ferguson is preparing his first two-year budget proposal as the state confronts another potential multibillion-dollar shortfall. He has said he does not intend to propose tax increases to close the gap and has pointed to programs created or expanded since 2019 as possible places to reduce spending. That search for savings has already created uncertainty for programs outside K-12 education. Parent to Parent, a longstanding program for families raising children with developmental disabilities or other special health care needs, connects parents with other families who have navigated similar challenges. Earlier this summer, families feared the program could disappear entirely as the Department of Social and Health Services reviewed its spending. The program helps families navigate therapies, diagnoses, caregiving, education, employment assistance, Social Security and other services. Advocates argued eliminating that network would not eliminate families’
Pierce County Libraries Announce Fall Closures, Free Student Tools
T
he Pierce County Library System is heading into fall with temporary maintenance closures at two branches while reminding students that many academic resources are available online from anywhere. Gig Harbor Pierce County Library will be closed Sept. 14–26, followed by Steilacoom Pierce County Library from Sept. 28–Oct. 13 for scheduled building maintenance. During the closures, book drops at the affected branches will not be accessible. Customers can have holds redirected to another Pierce County Library, return materials at other locations and continue using parking-lot Wi-Fi during normal business hours. The library does not charge late fees, and holds will be extended during the closures. Students can also continue using the system’s online Tools for Students with a library card. Resources include live online tutors from 2 p.m. to midnight, writing assistance, practice tests and skill-building courses, research and world-language tools, FAFSA assistance and guidance on using AI while maintaining academic integrity. Students can also submit a question and receive a response within 24 hours. The online resources are available outside library buildings. The library system operates 19 locations throughout Pierce County in addition to its online services.
needs and could make already complicated systems harder to navigate. The program was ultimately spared elimination, but with reduced funding, illustrating a distinction likely to become increasingly common as the state searches for savings: keeping a program does not necessarily mean keeping the same level of service.
WHAT GETS PROTECTED?
Education occupies an unusual position in Washington’s budget because the state constitution makes ample provision for public schools its “paramount duty.” The Washington Supreme Court reinforced that obligation in its landmark McCleary decision. In 2012, the court ruled the state was failing to adequately fund basic education, and it did not find Washington in compliance until 2018. Reykdal is invoking that history as he asks lawmakers to put schools near the front of the line even as other agencies face pressure to reduce spending. That does not mean every education proposal receives the same protection. Reykdal has long supported universal free school meals, but he is not requesting money to expand the program to every student in this budget. Washington currently covers meals for roughly 70% of public-school students. His reasoning comes back to the same distinction. When districts are cutting programs because they cannot afford insurance or utility bills, Reykdal said those costs take priority because they are affecting direct services to students.
Meals, he acknowledged, are not constitutionally protected basic education. That sets up one of the central questions lawmakers will confront next year. If the state accepts Reykdal’s argument that $1.2 billion of his request represents money Washington is constitutionally obligated to provide, those dollars are not simply another item competing for space in the budget. They become an obligation that must be addressed while lawmakers simultaneously decide what remains available for health care, disability services and other programs without the same constitutional protection. For school districts, the consequences of that decision are already visible. Local taxpayers are funding staff and services districts say the state does not fully cover, while school systems around Washington struggle with rising operating costs. For families relying on other state services, the consequences are different but no less tangible. A program may survive the budget process but emerge smaller, serve fewer people or provide less assistance. Ferguson is expected to release his proposed 2027-29 budget in December. Lawmakers will then write the final spending plan during the 2027 legislative session. Reykdal will enter that debate asking for nearly $2 billion more for schools. Other agencies will enter it looking for places to spend less. The difficult question for lawmakers will not simply be how much Washington can afford to spend, but which services the state is obligated to protect when there is not enough money to protect everything.
Rising Together, Eatonville Strong
E
atonville School District staff recently gathered at the new Arrow Lumber Stadium and B.W. Lyon Field to officially kick off the 2026-27 school year. Representing every school, department, classroom, office, bus, kitchen, and campus across the district, staff came together as one team united by a shared commitment to serving students, families, and the Eatonville community. This year’s theme, “Rising Together, Eatonville Strong,” reflects the district’s collective commitment to being inspired to learn, empowered to climb, and prepared to rise together throughout the new school year.
Special thanks to Superintendent Brower for continuing this meaningful annual tradition and securing the partnership with Peak Credit Union that made this year’s staff shirts possible. The district also extends its appreciation to Mike Moeller for organizing staff on the field and to Erik Swartout for capturing the photographs from above with his drone. The gathering took place during the district annual Welcome Back Day focused on preparing staff to welcome students and begin another successful school year. Eatonville School District looks forward to reaching new heights, supporting one another, and continuing to demonstrate what it means to be Eatonville Strong.

he Eatonville Cruiser boys tennis team came up just short in a pair of matches this past week, falling 3-2 to both Clover Park and Fife. Eatonville opened the week Tuesday, Sept. 8, on the road against Clover Park. Senior Jacob Golding continued his strong start to the season with a 6-2, 6-2 victory in No. 1 singles. The Cruisers’ other victory came from the No. 3 doubles team of Carter Becker and Sam Patterson, who also earned a 6-2, 6-2 win. Senior Jackson Rockey fell 2-6, 2-6 in No. 2 singles. In doubles action, juniors Blake Pool and Nate Diamond dropped their No. 1 doubles match 2-6, 2-6. Carlston Massier and Will Fulmer fell 4-6, 1-6 in the No. 2 doubles match. The Cruisers returned to the court Thursday, Sept. 10, to face Fife at the Jupiter Tennis Center. Once again, Eatonville earned victories in both singles matches but was unable to pick up the deciding third win. Golding improved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles. Rockey bounced back from his loss against Clover Park by winning his No. 2 singles match 6-1, 6-3. Pool and Diamond fell 1-6, 4-6 in No. 1 doubles. Massier and Fulmer lost 3-6, 3-6 at No. 2 doubles, while Becker and Patterson came up short 4-6, 3-6 in the No. 3 doubles match. Despite the two narrow losses, Eatonville head coach Maryann Baker is encouraged by the experience and ability throughout the Cruisers’ lineup. “We have a strong team this year that has great potential,” Baker said. “With most of the varsity players being in their third or fourth year of playing, there is strong leadership and a high tennis skill level. “We have worked several years to have this type of team. These players have great
respect for one another and work hard to support each other.” Golding is one of the top returning players in the league after placing seventh at last year’s West Central District Tournament. Rockey previously played No. 1 doubles before moving into the No. 2 singles position this season. Pool and Diamond both have previous doubles experience, but this is their first season playing together as partners. Patterson and Massier are both new to the varsity lineup this year. The Cruisers have also benefited from favorable weather, with no practices lost because of rain or poor air quality from wildfire smoke. The team recently took advantage of the new tennis court lights installed as part of the new stadium construction by holding its first “Midnight Tennis” practice. The session ran from 8:30 to 10 p.m., with players competing under a rising full moon. “The experience was fantastic,” Baker said. Eatonville plans to hold additional “Midnight Tennis” events in the future, with local community tennis players invited to participate.

Chopic’s Early Goal Helps Lady Cruisers Earn Draw With Rochester By Skip Smith After opening the season with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Bethel Bison, the Eatonville Lady Cruisers soccer team returned to the pitch this past week for a pair of matches, earning a draw against Rochester before opening 2A South Puget Sound League play against rival Orting. Eatonville opened the week Tuesday night by hosting Rochester in its home opener at
Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. The Lady Cruisers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard. fter opening the season with a shutout victory over Sequim, the Eatonville Cruisers returned to Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field and turned in another dominant performance Friday night. Quarterback Cole Fowler threw for 372 yards and five touchdowns as Eatonville rolled to a 41-7
nonleague victory over the Black Hills Wolves. Before kickoff, the stadium came together for a tribute honoring those who lost their lives during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Following a moment of silence and the national anthem, local pilots Jim Bieker, Darin Anderson, Randy Hood and Harry Nelson conducted a special flyover above the stadium.

Eatonville quarterback Cole Fowler looks downfield for an open receiver during the Cruisers’ 41-7 victory over Black Hills on Friday night. Fowler completed 17 of 24 passes for 372 yards and five touchdowns.
Once the game began, it did not take Eatonville long to take control. After Amari Samuel returned the opening kickoff to the Eatonville 30-yard line, a Black Hills penalty moved the ball to the Cruisers’ 45. Fowler then led Eatonville down the field and capped the opening drive with a 28-yard touchdown pass to Sam Kralik. Ben Bernt added the extra point to give Eatonville a 7-0 lead with 8:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Cruisers’ defense forced a punt on Black Hills’ opening possession, highlighted by Jacob Simons chasing down quarterback James Ross for a 2-yard loss on third-and-11. Eatonville struck again on its second possession. Trenton Prater beat his defender down the sideline, and Fowler dropped a pass between two defenders for a 48-yard touchdown. Bernt’s extra point stretched the lead to 14-0 with 4:13 left in the opening quarter. Black Hills drove to the Eatonville 35 on its next possession, but the Cruisers stopped the Wolves on fourth down. Fowler went back to the deep ball early in the second quarter. One play after narrowly missing Samuel along the sideline, he threaded a pass through two defenders to Simons, who outraced the defense for a 55-yard touchdown. The extra point was tipped and fell short, leaving Eatonville with a 20-0 lead.
The Cruisers immediately got the ball back when Black Hills fumbled the ensuing kickoff and Troy Berg recovered at the Wolves’ 29. Ben Smith carried the bulk of the load on the short drive before weaving through traffic for a 20yard touchdown on fourth-and-1. Bernt’s extra point made it 27-0 with 10:20 remaining in the half. Black Hills continued to find some success on the ground, but Eatonville’s defense repeatedly came up with stops when the Wolves crossed midfield. Hayes Sherrard intercepted a Ross pass at the Eatonville 7 to end another Black Hills scoring threat. On the next play, Fowler launched a pass from his own end zone that Samuel caught near the Black Hills 45. Samuel took it from there, outracing two defenders to complete a 93-yard touchdown. The Cruisers carried a 34-0 lead into halftime. Eatonville’s defense forced a three-and-out to begin the second half, but Black Hills got the ball back when Ryder Herbrand had the ball punched loose following a first-down reception. The Wolves returned the favor on their next play. An Eatonville defender knocked the ball loose, and Nash Sherrard recovered it at the Black Hills 43. Samuel appeared to score on a screen pass a few plays later, but a block in the back wiped out the touchdown. Eatonville went right back to the same play, and Samuel weaved through the defense and

Fall is Calling! Grab a cozy layer, pack something rain-resistant and be prepared for whatever Mother Nature decides to do. LADY CRUISERS, FROM 5 six additional shots on frame, but were unable to add to their lead. Rochester eventually found the equalizer to pull even at 1-1. Goalkeeper Savannah McCandless helped make sure it stayed that way, putting together an impressive performance in front of the net. McCandless recorded 16 saves to help preserve
the 1-1 draw and keep Eatonville unbeaten through its first two matches of the season. The Cruisers then turned their attention to league play Thursday night, traveling to Cardinal Stadium to take on rival Orting. The Cardinals struck early, scoring in the 10th minute to take a 1-0 lead. Orting added goals in the 24th and 36th minutes to build a 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.
Despite facing plenty of pressure, Eatonville continued to battle and created several scoring opportunities of its own, putting four shots on frame during the opening half. McCandless was once again busy in goal, recording 10 firsthalf saves to keep the Cruisers within striking distance. Eatonville tightened things up defensively after halftime and limited the Cardinals to
just one goal over the final 40 minutes. McCandless added five more saves in the second half to finish the night with 15, but the Cruisers were unable to find the back of the net as Orting came away with the 4-0 victory. Despite the loss, McCandless turned in a strong week in goal for Eatonville, totaling 31 saves over the two matches.
The Cruisers finished the week with a 1-1-1 overall record and an 0-1 mark in 2A SPSL play. Eatonville will return home Tuesday, Sept. 15, when the Lady Cruisers host the Washington Patriots at 7 p.m. at Arrow Lumber Stadium at B.W. Lyon Field. They will close out the week Thursday, Sept. 17, traveling to Tacoma to take on the Foss Falcons at 7 p.m.
