Staff Report
M
ount Rainier National Park’s northeast corner remains closed as crews continue responding to the Grand Park 2 Fire, shifting the local wildfire story from last week’s smokerelated air-quality concerns to an active fire affecting access to some of the park’s most popular summer destinations. Last week, Dispatch coverage focused on wildfire smoke drifting into the Mount Rainier area from major fires burning elsewhere in Washington. The National Park Service’s Ohanapecosh monitor recorded a NowCast Air Quality Index of 179 on Aug. 4, in the “Unhealthy” range. Readings remained unhealthy Aug. 5 and early Aug. 6 before improving steadily; by noon Aug. 10, the Ohanapecosh reading had fallen to 33, in the “Good” range. That report noted the Ohanapecosh sensor is in the southeastern corner of the park and should not be treated as a measurement for Eatonville or all of South Pierce County. It did, however, show how severe smoke had become around the mountain during the first week of August. The current concern is different. The Grand Park 2 Fire is burning inside Mount Rainier National Park about three miles north of the Sunrise Visitor Center. The fire was reported around 12:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and was estimated at more than 300 acres and 0% contained in the National Park Service’s Aug. 9 update. Firefighters were working to suppress the fire and protect life, property, and natural and cultural resources. As of the park’s latest posted alerts, Sunrise and White River remain closed
until further notice because of the fire. Sunrise Road and White River Road are closed, along with all trails originating from those roads that travel into the northeast area of the park. Trails in the Grand Park area are also closed until further notice. The closure affects both vehicle access and multiple trailheads. The park’s trail conditions page says Sunrise Road and White River Road are closed because of the Grand Park 2 Fire, and that all trails from those roads and all trails in the Grand Park area remain closed until further notice. Listed closures include Grand Park Trail, Huckleberry Creek Trail, Lake Eleanor Trail, Mount Fremont Trail and portions of Northern Loop Trail, among others. Some White River-area routes are listed as open only by longer backcountry access, not from the usual road-access trailheads.
The closure affects both vehicle access and multiple trailheads. The park notes there is no vehicle access to the Sunrise or White River Campground trailheads while the closure remains in effect. The fire response is continuing. In its Aug. 9 update, the National Park Service said engines, crews and aircraft were responding, with additional wildland firefighting resources ordered. Fire behavior was described as moderate, with tree torching, spotting and creeping. Conditions included warm temperatures, low humidity and wind, and officials warned conditions could change at any time. The park closure comes as fire restrictions are also tightening outside the park. Pierce County moved to a Stage 2 burn ban in unincorporated areas effective Monday, Aug. 17. The Pierce County Fire Marshal, in coordination with local fire chiefs, cited worsening dry conditions, ongoing drought and increased wildfire risk across the region. Stage 2 prohibits all outdoor burning in unincorporated Pierce County, including recreational burn pits,
backyard fire pits and fireplaces, land-clearing fires and yard-debris burning. Barbecues that use gas, wood or charcoal are still allowed when used safely on a noncombustible surface. Violations may result in citations and fines, and people responsible for illegal fires may be billed for the full cost of emergency response if fire crews are called. Residents of incorporated cities and towns should check with their local jurisdiction for burn requirements. That is another change from last week’s report, which said unincorporated Pierce County was under a Stage 1 fire-safety burn ban that had been in effect since June 1. Stage 1 prohibited land-clearing fires and yard-debris burning, but recreational fires could vary depending on state, municipal, fire-district or land-management rules. Mount Rainier National Park had already been under a parkwide fire ban since June 26. That ban prohibits campfires and the ignition of wood, briquettes or fuel in fire pits, fire pans and barbecue grills, including in developed campgrounds. Portable stoves and similar devices using bottled or liquefied fuel are allowed if they can be turned off. For residents and visitors, the practical difference from last week is significant. Last week’s public guidance centered on smoke: check current conditions, limit strenuous outdoor activity when smoke is present, keep windows closed and reduce exposure to fine-particle pollution. This week, smoke is only part of the concern. Visitors also need to check park alerts before traveling toward Sunrise, White River or Grand Park, because roads and trails remain closed while the Grand Park 2 Fire continues. Residents in unincorporated Pierce County also face stricter outdoor burning rules as fire danger increases across the region. The air-quality readings reported last week improved quickly. The fire has not ended. Until officials lift the closures, the northeast corner of Mount Rainier National Park remains an active fire area, not a normal summer recreation destination.

COVERED SERVICES
Original Medicare covers many services your father may need, including hospital care, doctor visits, lab tests, and outpatient treatments. It also covers home health care if your father is homebound, under a doctor’s care, and needs part-time skilled nursing or rehabilitation therapy, such as physical, occupational or speech therapy. Medicare also covers medically necessary durable medical equipment and supplies prescribed by a doctor, including oxygen, wheelchairs, walkers and catheters. Short-term skilled nursing care in a facility may also be covered for up to 100 days after a qualifying hospital stay. Prescription medications are generally covered through a separate Medicare Part D plan, which helps pay for many outpatient drugs your father may need. Hospice care is covered for patients with a terminal illness and a life expectancy of six months or less, as certified by a doctor. It includes nursing care, medications for comfort and short-term respite care to give caregivers a break. However, Medicare generally doesn’t pay for long-term custodial care at home, in an assisted living facility or in a nursing home. That means it generally won’t cover ongoing help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, using the bathroom or supervision for someone with dementia. Routine dental care, dentures, eye exams for glasses and hearing aids are also not covered. COST HELP
If your father has limited income and resources, check programs that help reduce Medicare costs. Extra Help assists with prescription drug expenses, and Medicare Savings Programs can help pay premiums, deductibles, and coinsurance. Visit medicare.gov/basics/costs/help or call 800-633-4227 to learn more or check eligibility. Taking time to understand Medicare can make caregiving a little less stressful. It helps you stay on top of appointments, treatments and equipment needs, while giving you greater confidence that your father is receiving the care and benefits he’s entitled to.

Staying Connected Can Support Seniors’ Mental Health Staff Report
S
ocial connection is an important part of healthy aging, but many older adults experience loneliness or isolation as family structures change, friends move away, health issues increase or daily routines become more limited. Social isolation can affect anyone, but seniors may be especially vulnerable. The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine has found that roughly one-quarter of American adults age 65 and older live in isolation. Michigan Medicine also reports that more than one-third of adults age 50 to 80 feel lonely, and nearly as many feel isolated. Warning signs can be subtle at first. A senior who begins withdrawing from regular activities, canceling plans, ignoring phone calls, missing social events or pulling away from hobbies may be showing signs of isolation. Changes in self-care can also be a concern. If a person stops eating regular meals, neglects hygiene or loses interest in daily routines, it may signal that their support system has weakened. Home upkeep may also change. A person who no longer expects visitors may stop cleaning, organizing or maintaining the home as they once did. Mood changes can be another clue. Irritability, defensiveness, sadness, disrupted sleep or a persistent sense of hopelessness may point to deeper loneliness, anxiety or depression. Anxiety is another mental health concern for older adults. Occasional worry is normal, especially during
major life changes, but persistent anxiety can make daily life harder. Signs can include excessive fear or worry, avoiding routine activities, withdrawing from social situations, becoming overly concerned about safety, difficulty sleeping, trembling, sweating, nausea, muscle tension or a racing heart. Seniors who feel overwhelmed by anxiety should speak with a health care professional, and loved ones should take symptoms seriously. One practical way seniors can protect their mental health is by staying engaged in community life. Volunteering can provide structure, purpose and social connection. It offers a reason to get up, go somewhere, interact with others and contribute to something meaningful. For retirees who once had full schedules, volunteering can help restore a sense of routine and belonging. Volunteer opportunities do not need to be physically demanding to be valuable. Reading to children, helping at a food bank, assisting at a library, supporting a faith community, joining a service club or helping with neighborhood events can all provide meaningful connection. Families and neighbors can help by checking in with older adults who seem withdrawn, offering transportation, inviting them to low-pressure activities or helping them find volunteer opportunities that match their interests and abilities. Social isolation, anxiety and depression should not be treated as inevitable parts of aging. With support and meaningful connection, older adults can stay engaged, valued and healthier.
Behind the Scenes: The Team That Keeps the EHS Pool Running Submitted
W
hile swimmers participate in lessons, practices, competitions, and recreational activities at the Eatonville High School Pool, important work takes place behind the scenes to keep the pool operating. Maintaining a school pool requires specialized knowledge, careful monitoring, and consistent attention. Eatonville School District maintenance staff perform a variety of essential duties, including checking and balancing pool chemicals, monitoring water quality and temperature, inspecting equipment, checking the boiler, and responding to mechanical concerns. A maintenance staff member is primarily responsible for completing many of the regular operational tasks associated with the pool. This work supports the daily function of the facility and helps ensure the water and mechanical systems meet the requirements necessary for pool use.
Pool maintenance continues throughout the year, including during times when the facility may not appear busy. Chemical levels, filtration systems, water temperature, boilers, pumps, and other equipment must be checked regularly. Preventative maintenance is also important for identifying potential concerns before they interrupt swim lessons, athletic practices, competitions, or community programming. Much of this work happens before swimmers arrive, after they leave, and throughout the day. Although these responsibilities often go unnoticed, they are essential to keeping the pool available to students and the greater Eatonville community. The Eatonville High School Pool is a valuable district and community resource. Eatonville School District appreciates the maintenance and custodial employees who perform the specialized, behindthe-scenes work required to support its continued operation. Color That Powers Through Summer Heat
I
f your garden looks a little ragged right now, you’re not alone. Gardens go through waves of bloom and color. In a small space, like a patio, you may plan for some evergreen (year-round) interest punctuated with one or two other
Erica Browne Grivas Get Growing seasonal peaks, like spring bulbs and summer annuals. The more space you have, the more minicycles become apparent. Primrose and wallflowers lead into calendula and alliums, then poppies and perennial salvias, which lead into rudbeckias and zinnias. September brings asters, dahlias, and chrysanthemums. But baking, dry August often sees plants that are crispy, dry, and bloomed out. So how can we plan for a garden that looks lush and colorful even in the dog days of summer?
A FOUNDATION
Flowers, as magnificent as each and every one is, are fleeting. Foliage sticks around a lot longer – and can see your borders through the rain and heat. Whether you are planning a container, raised bed, or an entire garden, weather-beating foliage is your best friend. Start with evergreen groundcovers, shrubs and small trees, from Kinnikinnick (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), to ceanothus and Cryptomeria japonica ‘Elegans’. In
a pot this might be a dwarf lemon cypress or columnar Euonymus. Next look for persistent, but dramatic foliage stars that are distinctive and bold in color and texture. • Sedges, short, evergreen grasslike plants come in a host of colors, are shade-tolerant, and average about two feet high. • Heucheras, known as coral bells, come in so many colors, stripes and spots you can create a magical carpet in lime, wine, russet, peach, pumpkin, nearly black, and green. Choose cultivars that like your sun exposure – there are plenty for sun or shade, in sizes from petite to beefy. Even though we’re talking foliage, many like ‘Paris,’ also have a bonus of abundant flowers. • Ornamental grasses, including Hakonechloa macra for shade, Panicum, and Pennisetum, to name a handful. Find the best size and sun tolerance for your garden. Many offer dramatic seedheads in August and beyond, as well as fall color and winter structure.
FLORAL POWERHOUSES
Some flowers have longer staying power, and flower freely throughout August. Sprinkle in a drift of these, and you’ll have your August anchor. These include: Echinacea, or purple coneflower, now comes in pink, white, red, orange, and yellow with varied forms. I’m a big fan of the native species, E. purpurea ‘Magnus,’ and the ‘Kismet’ and ‘Sombrero’ series of hybrids for staying power. Plant as early as possible and give excellent drainage to prevent winter rot. Leave seedheads up for interest and to feed birds!
Rudbeckia, or black-eyed Susan, related to Echinacea, also attracts bees and butterflies, and flowers through October. Echibeckia, is, as you may guess, an Echinacea x Rudbeckia hybrid with the fuzzy leaves of rudbeckia and the flowers of a double echinacea. On top of that, reportedly each flower lasts more than 10 weeks on the plant. Not knowing that, I cut my one and only bloom on my one plant last year to enjoy inside – oops. Dahlias are flower machines. The more you cut, the more flowers they produce, and once they start, they won’t quit until frost forces last call. Verbena bonariensis is just the sweetest plant that barely takes up any ground or air space, yet fills the garden with frivolity. It blooms for months, asking for very little water once established. Gaura lindheimeri is another drought-adapted plant that looks like it was created for a fairy’s garden. Airy white wisps bounce on featherlight stems all summer, creating a cloud. One cultivar is called, appropriately, ‘Whirling Butterflies.’ Late-blooming Salvias are increasingly available and offer exotic-looking blooms just when we need them. Most are borderline hardy and may overwinter with protection from winter wind and moisture. ‘Amistad,’ ‘Black and Bloom,’ ‘Skyscraper Orange,’ and ‘Wendy’s Wish’ are a few to watch for.
SECOND ACTS
Some flowers just look good even into their maturing days.
Pink Echinacea and related yellow Rudbeckia are two late summer powerhouses that bloom through the heat through September. Alliums, from the spring bloomers to shorter, July-blooming ‘Millenium,’ will dry in situ. You can enjoy them au naturel or give them new life in a glam shade of purple, silver or gold with spray-paint, either leaving them in-ground, or cutting to decorate inside or out. Clematis often make spidery tassels made of gossamer just as enchanting as the blossoms. Hydrangeas’ blossoms often dry slowly in place, many times morphing into gorgeous shades that look like a hand-tinted vintage photograph -pink, wine, purple and green.
ENERGY-BOOSTERS
We’ve talked about longer-term August perennials (dahlias are a maybe perennial), but there are annuals that can inject some needed energy at the right moment.
Often available now in nurseries for this purpose, they include: Canna lilies are loved for tropical flowers, tall presence, some with super cool foliage, like ‘Tropicanna.’ May overwinter with protection Bananas bring bold foliage in green, red, or a combination may overwinter with protection depending on cultivar Cosmos, zinnias, dahlias – all long-blooming, cut-and-comeagain, with a size for every garden. Note bedding dahlias purchased in pots may have to be truly annual – they probably won’t have time to form tubers you can overwinter. Coleus is an annual but can be used similarly to heuchera. Available in a head-spinning array of colors and patterns, they add excitement anywhere they are planted, while looking lush to boot. Take cuttings to overwinter.
Pierce County News Briefs STAGE 2 BURN BAN PROHIBITS OUTDOOR FIRES IN UNINCORPORATED PIERCE COUNTY
A Stage 2 burn ban is now in effect throughout unincorporated Pierce County because of worsening drought, dry vegetation, and increased wildfire danger. The ban, imposed Aug. 17 by the Pierce County Fire Marshal in coordination with local fire chiefs, prohibits recreational fires, backyard fire pits and fireplaces, landclearing fires, and yard-debris burning. Gas, wood, and charcoal barbecues may still be used safely on noncombustible surfaces. The restrictions apply only in unincorporated Pierce County. People living within a city or town should check with their local fire agency for applicable rules. Violators may receive citations or fines and could be billed for the cost of an emergency response to an illegal fire. Updates are available at www.piercecountywa.gov/982/ Outdoor-Burning or through the county’s burn-ban hotline at 253-798-7278.
SPANAWAY LAKE REMAINS UNDER TOXIC ALGAE CAUTION ADVISORY
People and pets should avoid areas of Spanaway Lake where algae are visible while a toxic algae caution advisory remains in effect. The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department issued the advisory Aug. 13 after detecting a potentially harmful algae bloom. Toxic algae, also known as cyanobacteria, may resemble green pea soup, streaks, or clumps and can move around the lake as wind conditions change. People should not swim, wade, waterski, fish, or drink lake water in areas with visible algae. Pets and livestock should be kept away because exposure can cause vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, breathing difficulty, or convulsions. Anyone or any pet exposed to algae should be rinsed
immediately, prevented from ingesting or licking the material, and monitored for illness. Current conditions should be checked at www.tpchd.org/advisories before visiting the lake. Additional information is available at www.tpchd.org/toxicalgae.
COUNTY LAUNCHES SEARCHABLE YOUTH-SERVICES DIRECTORY
Pierce County has launched an online directory intended to help families, educators, school counselors, social workers, and youth advocates find countyfunded programs for children and young adults. The Youth Programs and Services Resource Page includes more than $25 million in investments across 122 active programs operated by 86 organizations and supported through 12 funding sources. Users can search by category, age range, location, or funding source. Individual listings identify the service provider, eligible ages, service area, funding source, award amount, and a link to the provider. Programs are organized into five categories: behavioral health and therapy, violence prevention, outof-school programs, basic and essential needs, and career readiness and youth development. The directory is available at www.piercecountywa.gov/9107/ Youth-Programs-and-Services-Resources.
PIERCE COUNTY HOSPITALS RECEIVE HEART AND STROKE CARE RECOGNITION
Six hospitals in Pierce County were among 61 Washington hospitals recognized by the American Heart Association for participating in its Get With The Guidelines quality-improvement programs. The local honorees are MultiCare Allenmore Hospital and MultiCare Tacoma General Hospital in Tacoma,
MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, St. Clare Hospital in Lakewood, and Virginia Mason Franciscan Health’s St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma. The statewide list also includes MultiCare Auburn Medical Center, which serves patients near the Pierce-King county line. Participating hospitals use clinical data, treatment guidelines, and performance feedback to improve care for conditions including stroke, heart failure, atrial fibrillation, cardiac arrest, and coronary artery disease. Recognition indicates achievement within specific quality programs; it is not a ranking of hospitals against one another. The complete list and information about the program are available at www. heart.org/getwiththeguidelines.
COUNTY SEEKS DISTRICT 2 PARKS BOARD REPRESENTATIVE
Pierce County is seeking a District 2 resident to serve on its Parks and Recreation Citizens Advisory Board. The board advises Pierce County Parks about operations, capital projects, and community recreation needs. Members also communicate residents’ priorities to county departments, elected officials, and other government agencies. Board members serve four-year terms and meet quarterly at locations around the county. Council District 2 includes Puyallup, Sumner, Edgewood, Milton, Pacific, South Hill, and Summit-area communities. Applicants should confirm that they live within the district before applying. Information about the board and an online application are available at www.piercecountywa.gov/5942/ParksCitizens-Advisory-Board. Questions may be directed to Pierce County Parks at 253-798-4078.
LAKEWOOD PLAYHOUSE SEEKS ADDITIONAL ACTORS
Lakewood Playhouse is accepting video auditions for additional roles in its Season 88 productions of “Where Blooming Flowers Meet the Sky” and “Luchadora!” The theater is particularly interested in hearing from Black and Latin American actors whose experiences and perspectives can support the stories being presented. Auditions are open to performers age 16 and older. Applicants should submit a video containing a brief introduction, including their name and relevant experience, followed by a one-minute monologue from a play. The theater had not published a closing date for the additional audition call, so interested performers should apply promptly. Audition instructions and the submission form are available through www.lakewoodplayhouse.org. Performers who need accessibility accommodations may call 253-588-0042 or email brookelyne@lakewoodplayhouse.org.
PUBLIC CAN COMMENT ON POTENTIAL SR 7 IMPROVEMENTS
Residents may comment online through Tuesday, Sept. 1, on potential improvements to State Route 7 through Spanaway and Parkland. The Washington State Department of Transportation is studying ways to make the corridor between State Route 507 and 99th Street South safer, easier to use, and more reliable as part of a future paving project. Soak Up the Last Drops of Summer Without Spending Much Staff Report
S
ummer has a way of disappearing all at once. One week there are long evenings, wet towels, dusty shoes and kids asking what we are doing tomorrow. Then suddenly school supplies are on the table, sports schedules are filling up and someone realizes there are only a few more chances to make the season feel like summer. The good news is that memorable does not have to mean expensive. It also does not have to mean complicated. For families trying to squeeze in one more summer memory before school routines take over, the best plan may be the old-fashioned one: pick something, pack snacks and go. Pierce County farms are in a transition season right now: latesummer berries are still available at places like Spooner Farms in Puyallup, Maris Farms in Buckley, and Picha Farms, while early apples are beginning to come in at some orchards, along with farmstand vegetables like sweet corn, tomatoes, zucchini, and cucumbers. Because what’s ready changes quickly week to week, it’s best to check each farm’s website or social media before heading out. That last part matters. U-pick is low effort, but it is not no effort. Before loading everyone into the car, check the farm’s website or social media, confirm the hours, see whether reservations are needed and bring a container if the farm allows it. Many local farms also note that hours vary based on weather, ripening and inventory, so families should check before going. A quick call can save a disappointed car ride. A u-pick trip is one of those rare activities that works for toddlers, grandparents and teens who pretend they are too cool for it. Little kids like the bucket. Older kids like competing over who picked more. Adults like going home with something useful. Nobody has
to sit through a long program or spend half the day in line. Make it a real outing with almost no planning: go in the morning, bring water, sunscreen, hats and closed-toe shoes, pick enough berries for pancakes or dessert, then stop at a park on the way home. The “activity” becomes picking, snacking, getting a little dusty and deciding what to make later. Then actually use what you picked. That is the part kids
remember. Make blueberry pancakes for dinner. Freeze a bag for the first week of school. Let kids make tiny jars of jam, even if it is just freezer jam. Put berries over ice cream and call it a summer sendoff. For families with kids leaving for college, it is less about a bag of berries in the freezer and more about the memory of the days they picked and cooked with them together. Another easy plan: make water the destination.
Fresh ingredients are perfect for summertime
F
resh ingredients can be components of a flavorful meal. Come the warmer weather, fresh ingredients also can help people avoid feeling sluggish after eating. This summer, fresh ingredients like avocado and tomatoes can be just what people need when looking for a delicious meal that won’t adversely affect their energy levels. The following recipe for Bruschetta Topped With Avocado and Tomatoes from Lines+Angles employs both foods and can make a great addition to any summertime dinner table.
BRUSCHETTA TOPPED WITH AVOCADO AND TOMATOES Makes 4 to 6 servings
2 large Hass avocados, ripe, pitted, peeled, and cubed 4 vine tomatoes, cored, seeded, and diced 1 shallot, finely chopped 8 ounces fresh mozzarella, drained and diced 2 to 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar 2 to 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil, plus extra for brushing 1 large baguette, cut into 1-inch thick slices 1 small bunch basil, leaves only, finely sliced Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1. Combine the cubed avocado with the tomato, shallot, mozzarella, balsamic vinegar, extra-virgin olive oil, and plenty of seasoning in a mixing bowl. 2. Stir and toss to combine, adding more vinegar and extra-virgin olive oil as needed. Set aside until needed. 3. Preheat the broiler to hot. Lightly brush the baguette slices with olive oil before toasting under the broiler for 1 to 2 minutes until golden brown. 4. Remove bread slices and leave to cool briefly. Carefully spoon the avocado bruschetta mix on top and serve with a garnish of sliced basil on top.
Pack sandwiches, fruit, refillable water bottles, towels and dry clothes, then head to a lake, river access point, splash pad, park with room to run, or even a community pool. Eatonville School District, for example, has been opening its pool to the public, which means a water day does not even require a lake. It does not have to be a full beach day. Even two hours near water can feel like a vacation when nobody is rushing to the next errand.
Keep the expectations low. Kids do not need matching beach chairs and a perfect cooler. They need permission to get wet, a towel that is not precious and something to eat afterward. If swimming is not realistic, skip rocks, look for bugs, walk a trail, read on a blanket or let kids build a driftwood “fort” that will not survive the day. The third plan is the easiest: make dinner the event. Choose one evening and take the meal outside. It can be hot dogs, peanut butter sandwiches, leftovers, grocery-store fried chicken or whatever is already in the fridge. Bring a blanket, let the kids choose the spot and call it a picnic. If there is a sunset view nearby, go there. If not, the backyard counts. Add one small thing to make it feel different: bubbles, sidewalk chalk, a deck of cards, a cheap pack of glow sticks, a soccer ball or a notebook for drawing what everyone sees. The trick is not to create a perfect family memory. The trick is to stop treating dinner like another task. For older kids and teens, give them more control. Let them choose the playlist for a sunset drive, invite a friend for the picnic, pick the park, choose the dessert or be in charge of taking photos. Teenagers may act unimpressed, but they still remember when someone made time for them. Families do not need a big trip to give summer a proper goodbye. The goal is not to cram in every missed plan or create a perfect last weekend. The goal is to notice what is still here: warm evenings, local farms, lake towels, blackberries, camp chairs, library books, bug bites and a little more daylight than we will have soon. Summer is winding down, but it is not gone yet. There is still time for one more bucket of berries, one more swim, one more picnic dinner and one more ordinary day that kids may remember years from now as something special.
Blueberries make for flavorful additions to cookies, too
C
ookies are a versatile treat that can incorporate a wide range of ingredients. There’s no rules when it comes to making cookies, which means amateur bakers can take to their kitchens and whip up a batch of these beloved treats with whatever they have on hand in the pantry or refrigerator. Blueberries might be a go-to ingredient when baking a pie at home, but they also make for a delicious addition to a freshly baked batch of cookies. This recipe for Butter Cookies With Blueberries from Lines+Angles is a testament to the versatility of blueberries when it comes to crafting homecooked baked goods.
BUTTER COOKIES WITH BLUEBERRIES
Makes 20 to 24 servings 3/4 cup butter, softened 2/3 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 1 pinch salt 3 large eggs 11 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 2/3 cup almond meal 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 cup dried blueberries, chopped
1. Preheat the oven to 400 F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Add the eggs one at a time, beating after each addition. 3. Add the flour, baking soda, almond meal, and spices. Stir to form a smooth mixture; fold in the dried blueberries. 4. Spoon the mixture into a piping bag fitted with a round piping tip. Pipe 1-inch rounds onto the baking sheet (or use a teaspoon to place small mounds of the mixture on the sheet.) 5. Bake until golden and set, 10 to 15 minutes. 6. Remove from the oven and carefully transfer the cookies to a cooling rack to finish cooling.
