Pierce County Burn Ban Begins June 1
Columbia Crest Academy Enrollment for Nature-Based TK–8 Program in the Shadow of Mount Rainier
Staff Report
U
nincorporated Pierce County residents are being urged to prepare for the county’s annual burn ban, which begins at 8 a.m. June 1 and will remain in effect until further notice. The Stage 1 burn ban prohibits land clearing fires and the burning of yard debris in unincorporated Pierce County. Residents are encouraged to use alternatives such as composting.
F
amilies seeking an educational experience rooted in the outdoors, environmental stewardship, and hands-on learning are invited to explore the nature-based program at Columbia Crest Academy, part of Eatonville School District. Open enrollment for Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade for the 2026-2027 school year is now underway. Nestled in the shadow of Mount Rainier, Columbia Crest Academy offers students an immersive learning
environment unlike any other in the region. Situated on a 14-acre campus in Ashford, the school is uniquely positioned for authentic environmental education experiences with direct access to forests, rivers, creeks, and national park resources. The academy shares a fence line with the Tahoma Woods Ranger Station and maintains an active partnership with rangers from Mount Rainier National Park. Through this partnership, students participate in ranger-led educational
experiences focused on conservation, wildlife, ecosystems and outdoor stewardship. Three major trail systems surround the campus, creating a natural outdoor classroom for students throughout the school year. Students regularly explore the trail leading to Tahoma Woods, the trail to Sahara Creek, and the nearby Nisqually River trail located just across the street from the school.

orthwest Trek Wildlife Park has opened reservations for expanded overnight lodging inside its 435-acre FreeRoaming Area. The Eatonville-area wildlife park debuted its Lakeside Lodging A-Frame last year and has added a cabin and cottage for the upcoming season. The lodging area is located near Horseshoe Lake, where guests may see animals such as bison, elk, deer, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, caribou and moose. The accommodations are adults-only. The A-Frame and cabin sleep two adults and include kitchenettes. The cottage sleeps up to three adults and includes a full kitchen. Overnight stays include access to Northwest Trek’s core area before and after the visit, along with a Discovery
Tram Tour. The lodging area is inside a gated and fenced portion of the Free-Roaming Area, and guests are required
to remain within the fenced area during their stay. Park staff transport guests and their belongings to and from
the lodging site at arrival and departure. Northwest Trek Deputy Director Rick Dietz said the lodging program gives guests another way to experience the park and observe wildlife after hours. Nightly rates begin at $500 for the A-Frame or cabin and $650 for the cottage. The cost includes access to Northwest Trek’s core area before and after the stay, along with a Discovery Tram Tour.
Barbecues using gas, wood or charcoal, as well as small recreational fires in approved fire pits on private property or in designated campgrounds, are still allowed when safety guidelines are followed. Pierce County implements the annual burn ban in coordination with the Pierce County Fire Chiefs’ Association based on seasonal fire conditions. County officials said warmer temperatures and ongoing drought conditions across the state are increasing wildfire risk as summer approaches. Dry vegetation and low moisture levels make fires easier to ignite, harder to control and more likely to spread into nearby homes, neighborhoods and wildland areas. “We are heading into a hotter, drier summer, and that significantly raises the risk of wildfire across our communities,” said Pierce County Fire Marshal Ken Rice. “When vegetation is dry, it only takes a spark to start a fire that can grow rapidly and threaten homes and lives.” Rice said even small fires can escape quickly under dry conditions. “Even small, seemingly manageable fires can get out of hand in seconds under these conditions,” Rice said. “The burn ban is a critical step we take every year to reduce that risk, prevent avoidable emergencies, and help protect both residents and first responders.” A fixed June 1 start date is intended to help residents plan ahead and remove uncertainty about when restrictions take effect. In 2025, the burn ban was in place from June 1 to Oct. 1. The duration of this year’s ban will depend on fire risk conditions in the coming months. Violations of the burn ban may result in citations and fines. If fire crews respond to an illegal fire, the responsible party may be billed for the full cost of the emergency response. The burn ban does not apply to legal fireworks used during approved discharge periods in unincorporated Pierce County. Residents with approved Washington State Department of Natural Resources burn permits, or properties under DNR jurisdiction, should call 1-800-323-BURN before burning. Residents of incorporated Pierce County cities and towns should check with their local jurisdiction for specific burn regulations.

Dear Almost, A lot of people think osteoporosis is only a women’s issue, but men can get it too – especially as they get older. And like women, men often don’t realize they have it until a bone breaks. Osteoporosis is often called a silent disease because it weakens bones over time, making them thin, brittle and more likely to break, usually without any warning signs. While women are about four times more likely to develop it, men aren’t immune. About 2 million American men have osteoporosis, and another 12 million have low bone density, known as osteopenia, which can eventually progress to the disease. One of the biggest problems is that men are less likely to be tested. Even after a fracture like yours, many never get a bone density scan. Doctors sometimes overlook it in men, and men themselves may not realize they’re at risk. The bones most often affected are the hip, spine and wrist, and hip fractures in particular can lead to serious complications and long recoveries.

Dear Savvy Senior, Can men get osteoporosis or is it mostly a problem for women? When I fell and broke my wrist last winter, the ER doctor told me I might have osteoporosis, but I never followed up. What can you tell me? —Almost 70

In women, menopause speeds up bone loss. In men, it usually happens more gradually, but age is still a major factor. Your risk rises if you are over 70, thin or underweight, smoke, drink heavily, have a parent with osteoporosis or have already broken a bone, as you have. Certain medical conditions can also increase your risk. These include rheumatoid arthritis, celiac disease, low testosterone, overactive thyroid, COPD and kidney or liver disease. Neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis or a past stroke can raise the risk because they affect balance and mobility.
Long term use of corticosteroids, some prostate cancer treatments, acid reflux drugs, antidepressants and anti-seizure medications can weaken bones too. TESTING
A smart next step is a bone density test. All men 70 and older should talk to their doctor about being screened. Men over 50 who’ve had a fracture or have other risk factors should get tested too. The scan is simple, painless and takes only a few minutes. Medicare and most private insurance plans usually cover it. PREVENTION
When it comes to protecting your bones, the basics really matter. Get enough calcium from foods like low fat milk, yogurt and cheese, leafy green vegetables, beans, almonds and canned salmon or sardines. Men under 70 need about 1,000 milligrams a day. Those 71 and older need 1,200 milligrams. Vitamin D is just as important because it helps your body absorb calcium. Most adults over 50 need 800 to 1,000 international units daily, through sunlight, food or a supplement if needed. Regular weight bearing exercise such as walking, along with strength training two or three times a week, helps build and maintain bone. It also improves balance, which can prevent falls. You should also avoid smoking, and limit alcohol and caffeine. TREATMENT
If testing shows significant bone loss, medications such as Fosamax, Actonel, Reclast, Prolia, Forteo or Tymlos may be prescribed. Your doctor can explain the benefits and possible side effects and help you decide what is appropriate. Since you have already had a fracture, this is not something to ignore. A simple test and a plan now could help you stay strong and avoid a more serious break down the road.

Tariff Refund Fight Raises Question: If Consumers Paid More, Who Gets the Money Back? Staff Report
A
MICHAEL J MAGEE ADOBE STOCK
national fight over billions of dollars in tariff refunds is raising a practical question for Washington shoppers: if companies raised prices because of tariffs that were later ruled unlawful, should customers see any of that money returned? The issue has moved from federal trade policy into state oversight, consumer protection and the courts. It matters outside the courtroom because the affected purchases were everyday imported goods bought by Washington families throughout the year. At the center of the dispute are tariffs imposed under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, or IEEPA. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in February that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority by using the law to impose broad tariffs. After that ruling, importers became eligible to seek refunds from the federal government. But consumers do not pay tariffs directly to the federal government. Importers do. Shoppers often pay those costs later when companies raise prices on clothing, tools, electronics, household goods, appliances, vehicle parts or other imported products. That is where the fight begins. Fiscal officials in several states are demanding more transparency as businesses begin receiving tariff refunds. Stateline reported that U.S. Customs and Border Protection began accepting refund applications from importers and brokers, with potential refunds estimated at more than $166 billion. The concern from state officials is that businesses may receive money back from the government without passing relief along to consumers who absorbed higher prices. A separate Reuters report said the federal government had processed $35.46 billion in tariff refunds, including interest, as of
May 11, according to a court filing. For shoppers, the issue is simple: if companies raised prices because of tariffs that were later invalidated, who should benefit when those tariff payments are refunded? That question is already being tested in federal court in Seattle. Amazon is facing a proposed class action lawsuit from consumers who say the company raised prices to cover tariff costs, then failed to pursue refunds after the tariffs were invalidated. The lawsuit, filed May 15 in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, accuses Amazon of unjust enrichment and violating Washington’s consumer protection laws. The case is listed as Lisa Markland et al. v. Amazon. com Inc., according to previous coverage. The proposed class includes customers who purchased imported products sold directly by Amazon during the period affected by the tariffs. Covered purchases may include goods manufactured outside the United States and listed as “Sold by Amazon.com” or “Ships from and sold by Amazon.com,” according to Hagens Berman, the Seattle-based law firm representing the plaintiffs. The lawsuit argues that Amazon passed tariff costs along to customers through higher prices, then had the ability to seek refunds once the tariffs were ruled invalid. Instead, the suit claims, Amazon chose not to seek the refunds. Reuters reported that consumers cannot claim the money directly from the government because they were not the importers of record. Hagens Berman says Amazon collected “hundreds of millions of dollars in unlawful tariff costs” through higher prices while the tariffs were in effect. The Amazon case is part of a wider legal fight. Reuters reported that similar lawsuits have been filed against Costco, Nike and FedEx, accusing companies
of failing to pass tariff-related refunds back to customers. Costco has already asked a federal judge to dismiss a similar lawsuit. Reuters reported that Costco argues the claims are speculative, that customers voluntarily paid posted prices, and that the company has not yet received tariff refunds or decided how any future refunds would be handled. Those arguments show why the issue may be difficult to resolve. Businesses may argue that prices are shaped by many factors, including shipping, labor, demand, supply chain costs, competition and tariffs. Even if tariffs contributed to higher costs, companies may say that does not automatically create a direct refund obligation to every customer who bought an affected product. Consumers may see it differently. If a business raised prices because of tariffs, then later becomes eligible to recover those tariff payments, customers may view that as
a double benefit: the company kept the higher price paid by shoppers and can also recover money from the government. The issue may also look different for small businesses. Some importers may have absorbed tariff costs themselves rather than passing them fully to customers. Others may have raised prices only partially to avoid losing sales. Some may still be waiting for refund applications to be processed. The process depends on import records, customs filings and whether the business was the importer of record. KUOW recently reported on three Washington companies navigating tariff refunds in different ways. In one example, KAVU, an outdoor clothing company, had already raised some prices, saw business drop and laid off workers after tariff costs and other pressures hurt the company. That kind of example shows why a simple “businesses got refunds, customers
should get checks” approach may not cover every situation. Still, state officials pressing for transparency argue that consumers deserve to know what happens next. If businesses receive large tariff refunds, policymakers and the public may want to know whether those refunds are being used to lower prices, issue credits, refund customers, cover losses or increase profits. That question matters at a time when household budgets remain tight. Food, housing, insurance, utilities and transportation costs continue to strain families. If imported goods became more expensive because of tariffs later ruled unlawful, many shoppers will reasonably ask whether they helped pay a bill that businesses are now getting refunded. There is also a policy question for Washington. The Amazon lawsuit was filed under Washington’s consumer protection laws, and the broader debate touches on whether state officials have a role in ensuring consumers are treated fairly when federal trade policy changes after the fact. The lawsuits remain in early stages, and the allegations have not been proven in court. Judges will still need to decide whether the cases can proceed as class actions and whether retailers had any legal obligation to pass refunds back to customers. Even if the courts do not require refunds, the public debate may continue. Companies that receive tariff refunds may face pressure to explain what they did with the money, especially if they previously blamed tariffs for higher prices. For now, the federal government is refunding billions of dollars to businesses that paid unlawful tariffs. Consumers paid higher prices in stores and online. What remains unclear is whether any of that money will make its way back to the people who ultimately felt the cost.

The Eatonville High School equestrian team turned in a strong performance at the WAHSET State Finals, collecting multiple topfive finishes across individual and team events at the Grant County Fairgrounds. WAHSET, the Washington High School Equestrian Teams organization, is a non-profit interscholastic program that treats equestrianism like any other varsity high school sport, allowing students in grades 9-12 to compete in a wide range of disciplines while officially representing their schools. Athletes compete in district meets through the winter and spring with the goal of qualifying for the State Championship Meet. This year’s finals drew the top programs in Washington to Moses Lake for four days of competition. Competition ran May 14-17, bringing together the top high school equestrian programs in Washington state. Eatonville riders placed in seven individual events and three team disciplines, with a number of athletes earning berths to the regional championships next month. Head coach Michelle Woolf said the team arrived at state more prepared than in previous years. “It’s definitely been an exceptional year for the team,” she said. “Everyone came in on horses ready to compete and a little more seasoned than we have had in the past. It made the team try harder as individuals
because they could all see at practice what the meets were going to be like. Quite honestly, any one of the athletes could have won any of the events any day, so that made it pretty exciting to watch through the season -- and state was no different.” Freshman Macey Dudley led the individual performers, finishing second in barrels and fifth in breakaway. Barrels is a timed speed event in which horse and rider navigate a cloverleaf pattern around three barrels, while breakaway roping tests a rider’s ability to rope a calf cleanly and quickly. Also placing second were freshman Natalie Foster in driving and sophomore Kalli Olson in steer daubing. The trio’s runnerup showings headlined what was a productive meet for Eatonville across multiple disciplines. Sophomore Kaydence Hill added a fifth-place finish in figure 8, an event that tests precision and control as horse and rider navigate a figure-eight pattern around two markers, and a seventh in barrels. Olivia Benham placed sixth in figure 8, while sisters Ava Weaver and Heidi Weaver each placed in jumping, finishing sixth and seventh, respectively. Woolf acknowledged some adversity along the way. “At state we had a little hard luck and a couple of unfortunate accidents in a few events that could have been top placers, but they powered on and finished well,” she said. “The teamwork and sportsmanship with this year’s team is off the chain. They really make

The Canadian Flags squad of Dakota Murra, Morgan Eichost, Mariah Torgeson-Widger and Kaydence Maloney finished fourth. The Eatonville drill team rounded out the team results with a fifthplace finish. That squad included Zoey Shoopman, Ava Weaver, Heidi Weaver, Foster, Olson, Benham, Hill, Emma Adams, Ella Sturgis and Torgeson-Widger. Drill team competition showcases a coordinated group of riders performing choreographed patterns and
maneuvers in the arena, judged on precision, synchronization and overall presentation. Woolf was especially pleased to see the drill team punch through to the next round. “I can’t remember the last time our drill team made it to PNWIC,” she said. “They have been working hard and powered through random horse replacements and sick athletes this winter, so I’m really excited it all worked out the way it did for them.” She also credited her coaching staff and families for keeping the program running. “A big thank you to drill coaches Tricia and Chris Reed and backup coaches Krystal and Dustin Benham for helping things run smoothly, and to all the parents for
showing up. Our parents make this all happen -- getting the kids to all the places and then volunteering their time when they get there.” Their finishes punched tickets to the Pacific Northwest Invitational Championship, the elite seasonfinale event that serves as the regional championship between WAHSET and its Oregon counterpart, OHSET. Only the top five teams and individuals from each event at the state championships in both Washington and Oregon earn a spot in the field, making it one of the most competitive high school equestrian events in the Pacific Northwest. The PNWIC-bound contingent from Eatonville includes Dudley, who qualified in both barrels and breakaway; Foster, who qualified in driving; and Olson through her second-place finish in steer daubing. Hill qualified individually in figure 8. Benham and Hill both advance through their third-place biwrangle finish. The full Canadian Flags team of Murra, Eichost, Torgeson-Widger and Maloney qualified via their fourth-place result. The entire drill team roster -- Shoopman, Ava Weaver, Heidi Weaver, Foster, Olson, Benham, Hill, Adams, Sturgis and TorgesonWidger -- also advances through the team’s fifth-place finish. The PNWIC is scheduled for June 18-21 at the Grant County Fairgrounds in Moses Lake. “Everyone is pretty excited to get back to Moses Lake,” Woolf said. “I can’t wait to see how it goes.”

RANDY JOHNSON
aylor Johnson has made a habit of standing atop the podium at the district championships. The Eatonville senior swept three ambulatory field event titles at the 2A District 3 Championships, held Wednesday and Friday at Bremerton High School, claiming district gold in the shot put, discus and javelin while also finishing second in the ambulatory 100 meters. All four performances qualified her for the 2026 2A State Track and Field Championships, set for May 28-30 at Mount Tahoma Stadium at Mount Tahoma HS in Tacoma. Johnson, who won ambulatory district titles in the shot put and discus a year ago, was equally dominant this time around. She threw 16 feet, 7.75 inches to take the shot put title, heaved the discus 59 feet even for another gold and launched the javelin 31 feet, 11 inches to complete the sweep. In the 100 meters she posted a time of 25.69 seconds, crossing as the district runner-up to add a fourth state qualifier to her weekend. On the boys side, sophomore Jarrin Ragazzo gave the Cruisers another champion, uncorking a winning throw of 156 feet, 4 inches to claim the javelin title and punch his own ticket to State. The top five finishers in each event qualify for the state meet.
Eatonville collected multiple state qualifiers out of the boys field events. Sophomore Mason Kinley posted a third-place finish in both the shot put, at 45 feet, 11.75 inches, and the discus, at 131 feet even, earning a pair of trips to state. Junior Adam Ames placed fifth in the discus at 128 feet, 2 inches to also qualify. Junior David McClain cleared 6 feet in the high jump for a fourth-place finish, while fellow junior Steven Haas vaulted 11 feet for fourth place in the pole vault. Both will compete at state. On the boys track, sophomore Gabriel Kolsrud turned in a strong two-event performance. He ran a personal best 4:42.38 in the 1600 meters, finishing 11th, and returned to place fifth in the 3200 with a time of 10:15.94, securing a state berth in the process. Senior Oscar Lopez-Diaz set a personal best in the 400 meters, clocking 53.38 for an 11thplace finish. He competed as part of both boys relay teams on the day. The 4x100 squad of Lopez-Diaz, junior Jacob Simons, Haas and sophomore Colton Sanders ran 47.42 for 12th. The 4x400 unit of senior Phillip Buchholz, LopezDiaz, Kolsrud and sophomore Teagan Croppi posted a 3:49.98 for 13th. Junior Rogue Pound placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles at 17.20 seconds and added a seventh-place long jump at 20 feet, 3 inches.
Eatonville’s Taylor Johnson celebrates on the first-place podium at the 2A District 3 Championships at Bremerton High School. The senior swept the ambulatory shot put, discus and javelin titles at the May 2022 meet, repeating as district champion in the shot put and discus for the second straight year.

Together, they built a life rooted in faith, family, and community. After a brief residence in Milton, they moved to Eatonville in 1973. Jay, a graduate of Fife High School, was born on April 3, 1935, to Joseph and Frances Charaba in Tacoma. Elnora, a graduate of Puyallup High School, was born on August 17, 1939, to James and Angaline Brown in Americus, Kansas. Dolar LaPlant, who gave his life protecting the young Town of Eatonville many years ago, is finally honored in a memorial sign at Mashell Ave. and Center St. We are grateful for the efforts of Police Chiefs Jim Heishman and Jason LaLiberte, Dolar’s great granddaughter Ronda Snowden, and others, in preserving his memory and honor, as well as for the generous contribution of town resident Bev Wilson, for making this memorial possible.
Elnora enjoyed gardening and devoted many years to church activities and service, especially the parish rummage sales and other community events, including serving as a member of St. Ann’s Altar Society.
