fter a week of waiting and a season opener washed away by rain, the Eatonville Cruisers finally took the field Monday eager to begin their 2026 campaign. The long layoff showed in stretches, as Eatonville fell behind early and could not recover in a 10-2 nonleague loss on the road. From the opening inning, Eatonville found itself playing from behind. A combination of early miscues and missed opportunities allowed the home
the tone for a lineup that refused to go quietly despite the score. Ryder Herbrand also provided the biggest offensive contribution for Eatonville, driving in both of the team’s runs. His presence in the middle of the lineup gave the Cruisers a spark and a reminder of their ability to produce when opportunities arise. Colton Herbrand and Ben Smith each added a hit, accounting for Eatonville’s total in the hit column. While the offense was limited overall, the combination of patience at the
team to build a quick cushion. By the time the first inning ended, the Cruisers were already facing a multi-run deficit, forced to regroup and settle in after a rocky start. Colton Herbrand got the opening assignment on the mound for Eatonville, working through two innings against a lineup that capitalized on early chances. He struck out two and walked two, but a string of hits and defensive pressure led to eight runs, six of them earned, putting Eatonville in a difficult position before the game had fully taken shape. Despite the early deficit, Eatonville showed signs of life both on the mound and at the plate as the game progressed. Ryder Herbrand came on in relief and delivered a steadier outing, giving the Cruisers a chance to reset. Over four innings, he allowed just two runs on two hits while striking out six. He worked out of multiple jams, showing composure and helping slow the pace of the game after a fast start by the opposition. At the plate, Eatonville worked to generate offense against a pitcher who found an early rhythm. The Cruisers were patient in their approach, drawing six walks and forcing deeper counts throughout the game. Santiago Ruvalcaba and Coleson Simpson each reached base twice via the walk, setting
plate and timely contact hinted at potential as the season moves forward. Defensively, Eatonville faced constant pressure from an opposing lineup that consistently put the ball in play. Even so, there were moments where the Cruisers settled in and executed, particularly in the later innings as the game’s tempo evened out behind Ryder Herbrand’s outing on the mound. The loss drops Eatonville to 0-1 to start the season, though the final score did not fully reflect the competitive stretches the team showed after the opening innings. With the first game now behind them, the Cruisers will look to build on those midgame adjustments and carry them into the next stretch of the schedule. Eatonville was set to return to action March 18, but that contest was also rained out, extending an already disjointed start to the season. Now, the focus shifts to the home opener, where the Cruisers will look to settle into a rhythm and secure their first win. They are scheduled to host Foss on Monday, March 23, before traveling for a rematch two days later. Both games are slated for 4 p.m., offering Eatonville a quick opportunity to turn the page and establish momentum in the early part of the season.

Big Day at the Plate, Chopic Powers Eatonville With 6 RBI By Skip Smith

fter a week of waiting and three straight rainouts to open the season, the Eatonville Cruisers fastpitch team finally took the field and experienced both ends of the spectrum in a busy stretch of non-league play. The Cruisers opened their 2026 campaign March 16 on the road against North Mason, where one difficult inning set the tone in a 15-0 loss. Two days later, Eatonville responded in emphatic fashion, erupting for 22 runs in a shortened win over Vashon Island. The split leaves the Cruisers with an early sense of both the challenges ahead and the potential within their lineup as they prepare to enter league play. In the opener, Eatonville ran into a North Mason squad that capitalized early and never let up. The Bulldogs plated three runs in the first inning and added three more in the second, quickly putting the Cruisers in a hole. Josie Lavergne drew the start in the circle for Eatonville and showed flashes early, striking out two batters. Control proved difficult, however, as she worked through traffic on the bases and allowed six runs over one and one-third innings. Morgan Laird came on in relief and provided length, tossing two and twothirds innings. North Mason continued to apply pressure, stringing together hits and taking advantage of additional walks to extend its lead. The decisive moment came in the third inning when North Mason broke the game open with eight runs. Eatonville struggled to slow the momentum as the Bulldogs collected multiple extra-base hits and consistently found gaps in the outfield.

Personal Bests Highlight Eatonville Track’s Early Season By Skip Smith

he Eatonville Cruisers opened their 2026 outdoor season in full force Saturday, March 21, traveling to Rainier for the annual Rainier Icebreaker Invitational. Facing a deep field of 25 teams, Eatonville’s boy’s squad turned in a strong early-season performance, tying for fourth place with Onalaska High School. The girl’s team battled through a competitive field and finished in a three-way tie for 19th alongside Tenino High School and Pe Ell High School. The meet marked the first largescale test of the spring, and the Cruisers responded with a mix of top finishes, personal bests, and promising depth across events. On the boys side, senior Oscar Lopez-Diaz led one of the top performances of the day. After being unable to compete in the 100 meters, Lopez-Diaz returned
in the 400 meters and delivered a strong runner-up finish in 53.98 seconds, a season-best mark that set the tone for Eatonville’s sprint group. Junior Steven Haas was a standout across multiple events and one of the most versatile performers at the meet. Haas placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 24.08 seconds, then came back to take second in the 300-meter hurdles in a personal-best 45.06. He added a fourth-place finish in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 inches, also a personal best, showcasing his ability to contribute in sprints, hurdles, and field events. Eatonville’s relay team also made an impact. The 4x100 relay group of Phillip Buchholz, Lopez-Diaz, Hayes Sherrard, and Haas combined for a third-place finish in 46.66 seconds, an encouraging result for a unit still finding its rhythm early in the season. In the distance events, sophomore Gabriel Kolsrud turned in a strong
effort in the 3200 meters, placing fifth with a season-best time of 10:39.98. Jacob Golding competed in the 1600 meters and recorded a personal-best time of 7:38.47,
continuing to build experience at the varsity level. The hurdles group added valuable points, led by Rogue Pound, who placed fifth in the 110-meter hurdles with a season-best 18.52. Landon Austin contributed in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing 10th with a personal-best 47.10. In the field events, Eatonville showed depth in the throwing disciplines.

Dear Savvy Senior, What can cause dizziness in older adults? I have dizzy spells from time to time but I’m not sure what causes it or what I should do about it. —Dizzy Donna Dear Donna, hether it’s a moment of lightheadedness or the room-whirling sensation of vertigo, dizziness can be very unsettling. As many as 30 percent of people older than 60 experience dizziness at some point, about 50 percent after age 85. This unpleasant sensation only rarely signifies a serious medical condition. But it can knock you off balance, leading to falls and injuries. That’s why anytime you feel dizzy, you should lower yourself to a safe, seated position. Here’s a brief rundown of what typically causes dizziness and what you can do to fix it.

WHAT CAUSES DIZZINESS One of the most common causes of dizziness and vertigo in older adults is benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). This occurs when tiny crystals in the inner ear, which play a role in balance, become dislodged. BPPV is more likely as we get older because wear and tear can cause the crystals to shift out of place. The resulting dizziness is generally triggered by changes in head position. People with BPPV often complain that the room spins when they roll over in bed, get into or out of bed, tip their head back, bend over, or make other quick head movements. These episodes usually last only a minute or two, but they may happen intermittently over a period of time. A drop in blood pressure may also cause dizziness, even fainting, especially when changing position from sitting or lying down to standing. This so-called postural hypotension is often the result of problems with blood pressure medication. If this is something that occurs on a regular basis, you need to be evaluated by your doctor. Certain
sedatives, antidepressants, cough and cold medicines, and antibiotics can lead to dizziness, too. Dehydration may be another culprit in postural hypotension. Staying hydrated is extremely important for balance, blood pressure, and general well-being. Declines in vision and hearing (including ear infections and impacted earwax) may also affect your balance. WHEN TO CALL A DOCTOR Occasional dizziness that lasts only for a few seconds is probably no cause for worry, but you should still let your doctor know. If it persists for several minutes or more or keeps happening, call your doctor right away. Sudden dizziness or loss of balance, along with facial drooping, trouble speaking, nausea, and vision or hearing disturbances can signal a stroke. If this happens call 911. TREATMENT FOR DIZZINESS If your doctor thinks you have BPPV, they can teach you the Epley maneuver, where you turn your head and body in ways that move ear crystals back into place. For medication related dizziness, your doctor can change your medication or dosage to reduce the side effects. For persistent problems, your doctor can check for infections, balance disorders, and more serious issues, such as tumors, congestive heart failure, an irregular heart rhythm, and conditions like Parkinson’s disease. If none are found, your doctor may recommend vestibular rehab, which may help with dizziness, vertigo, and balance problems. Anxiety and depression can also cause dizziness in some people. Treating this may ease your lightheadedness.

Vilaverde’s Hat Trick Powers Cruisers Past Foss
CROSSWORD
By Skip Smith
T
CHOPIC, FROM 1 Offensively, the Cruisers were limited in their opportunities. Kaitlyn Kenney accounted for Eatonville’s lone hit, finishing 1 for 1 at the plate. Despite the lopsided score, the game marked a first step for a team that had not yet seen live action this season. Rather than dwell on the result, Eatonville quickly turned the page and shifted focus to its next matchup. That reset paid off. Traveling to Vashon Island on March 18 to battle the Pirates, the Cruisers came out aggressive and never looked back in a 22-2 victory that was shortened by the mercy rule. Eatonville’s offense exploded immediately, sending a message in the top of the first inning. The Cruisers scored 13 runs in the frame, batting through the lineup with a mix of timely hitting and disciplined at-bats. Kenney got things started with a double, and Ryleigh Chopic followed with a

he Eatonville Cruisers boys’ soccer team experienced both ends of the spectrum this past week, responding to an early-season setback with a statement league victory before running into a tough result on the road two days later. After opening the season with a 4-0 non-league loss to Bethel, Eatonville regrouped quickly under new head coach Mark Phillips. The response came Tuesday, March 17, in the team’s first 2A SPSL league match of the season against Foss, where the Cruisers delivered a complete and disciplined performance in a 6-1 win. From the opening whistle, Eatonville set the tone. Crisp passing, organized movement, and sustained pressure allowed the Cruisers to take firm control early. By halftime, they had built a commanding 4-0 lead, effectively putting the match out of reach. Gui Vilaverde was the centerpiece of the attack, turning in a standout performance with a hat trick. He consistently found space behind the Foss defense and finished with confidence, showing both composure and attacking instinct throughout the match. Each of his goals reflected a different strength, from positioning to timing to clinical execution in front of goal. Behind him, the Cruisers displayed a balanced offensive effort. Ben Bernt added a goal and contributed an assist, while Aiden Combs and Jake Brannon each found the back of the net. Brannon’s goal came from the penalty spot, where he converted calmly to extend Eatonville’s lead. Playmaking was just as sharp. Nate Christiansen recorded two assists, helping drive the attack and connect play in the final third. Eli Rivera added another assist as Eatonville continued

Vilaverde’s hat trick helped power the Cruisers to a 6-1 win over Foss this past week. to create chances with consistency and purpose. By the 31st minute of the second half, the Cruisers had pushed their advantage to 6-0. Despite the lopsided scoreline, Eatonville showed restraint. “We don’t score more than 6 against any opponent as we find that to be degrading and lacking in sportsmanship,” Phillips said. Foss managed to break through late in the second half for a goal, but it did little to change the overall flow. Eatonville maintained possession, stayed organized defensively, and closed out the match with control. It was the kind of performance Phillips had been looking for early in his tenure. The Cruisers combined discipline, creativity, and relentless pressure, turning in a full team effort that showcased their potential in league play. Riding that momentum, Eatonville
run-scoring single. Amy Tozier added an RBI single of her own, while Laird contributed with a run-scoring groundout. The inning continued to snowball as Daylee Wynn and Lilah Chapman each drew bases-loaded walks. Kenney later added an RBI single in her second plate appearance of the inning, and Chopic worked a walk to drive in another run. Tozier delivered again with a two-run single, Lavergne helped her own cause with an RBI knock, and Aubree Mills capped the inning with a tworun single as Eatonville seized full control. The Cruisers did not let up. They added four more runs in the second inning behind RBI singles from Chopic, Laird and Lavergne, extending the lead and keeping constant pressure on the Pirates. Chopic delivered the highlight moment in the third inning when she launched an inside-the-park home run, driving in three runs and showcasing both power and speed. She

In discus, Mason Kinley and Dale Swaner placed ninth and 10th, respectively, with Kinley setting a new personal best at 114 feet, 9 inches. Rogue Pound also competed in the javelin, placing ninth with a throw of 121 feet, 9 inches, while Derek Wood added a 15th-place finish. In the jumps, David McClain cleared 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump for a season best, and Connor Austin recorded an 8-foot vault in pole vault competition. On the girl’s side, the Cruisers leaned on a young roster that showed steady improvement throughout the meet. Freshman Avery Crowder was one of the top performers for Eatonville, setting personal bests in multiple events. She placed 26th in the 100 meters in 14.69 seconds, then improved to finish 14th in the 200 meters with a time of
traveled to Trojan Memorial Stadium on Thursday, March 19, for another 2A SPSL matchup against Fife. This time, the outcome swung sharply in the opposite direction. The Trojans controlled the match from start to finish, handing the Cruisers an 8-0 loss. Eatonville struggled to find rhythm or sustain possession, and Fife capitalized with consistent pressure and efficient finishing. The quick turnaround from a dominant win to a difficult loss highlighted the early-season challenges facing a developing squad under a new coaching staff. For Phillips and the Cruisers, the week offered both encouragement and a clear picture of the work still ahead. Eatonville will look to respond when it returns to the pitch Tuesday, March 24, traveling to Cardinal Stadium for a 2A SPSL matchup against Franklin Pierce. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lavergne and Mills anchored the attack with four hits each, while Chapman, Tozier and Kenney also turned in multi-hit performances. The Cruisers were just as aggressive on the bases as they were at the plate. Wynn drew three walks, and Eatonville consistently turned those opportunities into extra bases. Tozier, Mills, Kenney, Wynn and Chopic each recorded multiple stolen bases as the team piled up 19 steals. Defensively, Eatonville was clean and efficient. The Cruisers did not commit an error, and Chapman led the way with nine defensive plays. Lavergne delivered a strong performance to secure the win. She allowed just two hits and two runs over four innings while striking out nine. Her ability to miss bats and control the tempo helped Eatonville maintain its early advantage.

She ran a season-best 14.38 in the 100 meters and later cleared 6 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault to place seventh, one of the team’s top field finishes on the day. In the middle-distance events, freshman Jenny Lowe recorded a personal-best 1:15.10 in the 400 meters. Madison Sarpy and Alice Alexander competed in the 800 meters, with Sarpy posting a personal best and Alexander recording a season-best effort. Junior Hannah Bieker led the distance group with a strong showing in both the 1600 and 3200 meters. She placed ninth in the 1600 with a season-best 6:16.77, then returned to finish fifth in the 3200 at 13:09.13. Teammate Bridget Stumph added solid performances in both races, recording season-best times in each. In the throwing events, Madison McChesney-Berube delivered one of
The contrast between the two games was stark, but together they offered a clear picture of a team still finding its rhythm. After a delayed start to the season, the Cruisers showed resilience by bouncing back quickly and putting together a complete performance. Eatonville was scheduled to continue play March 19 against Clover Park, but that game was rained out, extending an already weather-impacted opening stretch. Now, the focus shifts to league competition. The Cruisers are set to open 2A SPSL play March 26 on the road at Orting, with first pitch scheduled for 4 p.m. With one game to shake off early rust and another to showcase their offensive potential, Eatonville heads into league play looking to build consistency and carry forward the momentum from its breakout performance against Vashon.
the team’s best field performances, placing 10th in the javelin with a personal-best throw of 83 feet. She also competed in discus, finishing 11th with a season-best mark. Porcalynn Hayes and Taylor Johnson added efforts in the shot put, with Johnson recording a personal best. Bethany Kidd represented Eatonville in the high jump, clearing 4 feet for a personal best, while Ruth Lightfoot added a mark in the long jump. Overall, the Icebreaker Invitational provided a valuable early-season benchmark for the Cruisers. With multiple top-five finishes on the boy’s side and a number of personal records across both teams, Eatonville showed both competitiveness and growth against a large and talented field. The Cruisers will return to action Thursday, March 26, when they travel to Lakewood to face the Clover Park Timberwolves and the Foss Falcons in the opening meet of 2A SPSL league competition.
