WelCome to Capitol Hill
As editor for the Capitol Hill Times, I have the privilege of documenting one of Seattle’s most popular and lively neighborhoods on the rise.
Not simply Seattle’s “gayborhood” anymore, Capitol Hill’s many fine shops, restaurants, clubs and bars, parks and higher education and medical institutions, along with community support for arts, culture and inclusivity, has spurred huge development growth. So many people want to live on the Hill.
The draw to Capitol Hill to live, work and play has also made it a strong area of focus for enhanced transportation. In March 2016, Sound Transit opened up the Capitol Hill light rail station, part of its University Link line. People can get from downtown to Capitol Hill in a few short minutes, and from Capitol Hill to Husky Stadium at the University of Washington in under four.
Before that, the First Hill Streetcar launched, providing a line from Seattle Central College, past Seattle University in First Hill and down to Pioneer Square.
As much as Capitol Hill is changing, community leaders have also fought for many years to preserve the neighborhood’s character, such as with its Pike/Pine Conservation District. Rather than tear down structures with historic and personal value to Capitol Hill residents, many developers are taking these old buildings and adding to them.
If this is your first time to Capitol Hill, you won’t have to look hard to find an unofficial historian, who will be delighted to not only wax poetic about the neighborhood’s past, but tell you what they see in its future.
We hope this publication gives you a taste of what’s great about Capitol Hill. You’ll want to hold onto this guide, because it will take more than one trip to take it all in.
