I am always amazed by the breadth and depth of our journeys. Delving into this catalog, you will take a trip around the world as we present tours from Mexico to Malta; from the classical Greek islands to the remote silk road cities of Bukhara and Samarkand. As always, our team of expert archaeologists and travel professionals have meticulously planned each route to ensure that nothing is missed. As a result, our tours give you a 360 degree picture of the countries, cultures and civilizations (ancient and modern) that we explore.

A personal favorite of mine is our Greek Gulet Cruise, which first ‘set sail’ in 2017. Gulets are picturesque, traditional wooden ships and they are deceptively comfortable with modern conveniences fitted on deck and in the cabins. What better way to discover the lands of Homer, Aristotle and Socrates than sailing the gentle waters of the Mediterranean and sipping local wine as you pass sun-kissed ancient temples. She is a Research Associate in the Department of the History of Art at SOAS, an Assistant Editor for the International Journal of Islamic Architecture & has lectured extensively.

November, Led by Prof. J. Daniel White has been Professor of South Asian Studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte for over three decades. He earned his PhD in Indian Religions, Languages and Literatures from UPenn and has penned a variety of scholarly papers and books.

After spending a morning at leisure, we stop for a lecture and lunch. We continue to Mumbai’s major sites and fly to Aurangabad this evening.

Today we visit the spectacular cave temples of Ellora - a World Heritage Site - carved out of solid rock between the 5th and 13th centuries.

Tour the Ajanta Caves, where ancient craftsmen left frescoes that tell the story of Indian life almost 2,000 years ago. We return to Mumbai and take a connecting flight to Chennai.

DAY 6: CHENNAI

We enjoy a late start in Chennai before visiting the Government Museum, Fort St. George and St. Mary’s Church this afternoon.

We drive south to Mamallapuram and visit famous rock-cut shrines and incredible shore temples. Later, we will enjoy a private

performance of the Bharatanatyam dance.

DAY 8: TIRUCHIRAPALLI

After a morning flight to Tiruchirapalli, we spend a full afternoon at the magnificent Ranganathaswamy Temple then continue to Thanjavur in the evening.

DAY 9: MADURAI

Pore over Chola bronzes at Raja Museum and Brihadeshwara Temple before stopping for lunch at a Chettinad mansion. Later, in Madurai we visit the great Meenakshi Temple.

DAY 10: MADURAI

This morning we discover the 17th century Thirumalai Nayak Palace. We have free time in the afternoon to relax or to further explore.

Explore the wonders and endemic wildlife of India as we spend time watching deer, exotic birds and elephants in their natural habitat.

DAY 12: ALLEPPEY

Visit the spice gardens around Periyar Lake before driving through lush tea plantations. We board a rice boat for a wonderful trip through the backwaters before we continue to Cochin.

Today we tour Cochin and get to know the country’s first ever European settlement. We have an afternoon at leisure before regrouping to watch a Kathakali dance performance.

Admire the amazing Somnathpur Hoysala Temple’s symmetrical architecture and intricate sculpture as we travel to Mysore via Bangalore.

Our touring today brings us to the ancient ruins of the Vijayanagara Empire, which was once the most powerful kingdom in India.

We enjoy an afternoon at our leisure once we arrive at Badami. In the evening, we sit down as a group one last time to enjoy a farewell dinner.

Our final day is spent exploring two Aihole Hindu temples and the archaeologically significant temples of Pattadakal. We drive to Hubli before flying to Mumbai where we transfer to the airport for our departures home.

Led by Prof. William Saturno is Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Boston University. He earned his PhD at Harvard University and has conducted fascinating research in Mexico, Belize, Guatemala and Honduras. In 2001, he discovered the remote archaeological site of San Bartolo and the oldest intact Maya murals found to date.

DAY 13: LAMANAI

DAY 1: GUATEMALA CITY

We arrive in Guatemala and transfer to our hotel located in the heart of the city.

DAY 2: GUATEMALA CITY

Enjoy an orientation lecture before visiting the Popul Vuh Museum, renowned for its funerary ceramics and the Ixchel Textile Museum. Later we tour the city and then we return to our hotel for a fabulous three-course dinner.

DAY 6: COPÁN ACROPOLIS

Visit the Museo National de Arqueologia y Etnologia before traveling to Antigua. Explore Spanish colonial buildings that provide great examples of 17th and 18th century architecture.

Continue our exploration at the Copán Acropolis and the Sepulturas section of the elite residences. After a picnic lunch, we visit the tunnels, where excavations have revealed amazing early period architecture.

DAY 10: TIKAL

After a morning lecture, we visit the Monastery of San Francisco. We will also discover the Baroque church of La Merced and visit a colonial house before enjoying a free afternoon.

DAY 5: COPÁN

Cross the border into Honduras and travel to Copán, which is situated in a fertile valley and is particularly beautiful with its cobbled streets and buildings with red-tiled roofs. This town boasts the Great Plaza and also the beautifully etched pyramidal Hieroglyphic Stairway.

Depart early for the ancient Maya site of Quiriguá and, upon arrival, we tour the site and museum. This area is noted for its monuments that depict surreal creatures of the underworld.

After lunch, we drive to our hotel in Tikal.

DAY 8: YAXHÁ

Journey into the Petén jungle through Yaxhá, a seldom-visited Classical period city. We cross Lake Yaxhá to Topoxte, which has structures that date back to the Preclassic period.

DAY 9: TIKAL

Spend the day in Tikal, which has been under excavation since 1950. We visit pyramids, enigmatic temples and shrines. An evening lecture and delicious dinner will close our day.

Return to Tikal in the morning for a final tour of pyramids and palaces, and visit the museums that house the excavations from these sites.

There will also be free time to explore the site before enjoying an evening lecture at our hotel.

Cross the border into Belize and the vibrant frontier town of San Ignacio. Beginning at Xunantunich, we explore its incredible archaeological site. It also has three adjacent plazas, dominated by El Castillo. After lunch, we transfer to Chaa Creek and enjoy a nature walk designed to discover medicinal plants.

DAY 12: CARACOL

This morning sees us making an early morning departure for Caracol, which we reach via the Chiquibul Rainforest - Belize’s largest national park. Keep your eyes peeled for wild macaws, tapirs and jaguars as we go. Excavations of this Classic period settlement have so far unearthed plazas, distinctive circular stone altars and a sophisticated reservoir. As part of our full day’s tour we also visit the site’s museum before returning to San Ignacio this evening.

We leave the lush mountains for the superblynamed Orange Walk Town, where we board our boat for a voyage on the New River to Lamanai. Completely concealed from the river by vegetation, Lamanai was continuously occupied from 1500 BCE until the late 16th century. Keep your binoculars to hand as there are incredible examples of biodiversity here.

Our hotel for this evening is in the remote lagoon-side hideaway of Lamanai Lodge.

DAY 14: LAMANAI

After a boat transfer to Lamanai’s archaeological site, we see first hand how excavations have freed the ruins of the ancient city from the forest, revealing royal residences and pyramids. Highlights include the Mask Temple and the aptly-named High Temple, from the top of which it is possible to enjoy some truly breathtaking views. After returning to the lodge, our last afternoon is spent enjoying this astounding natural area at leisure.

DAY 15: HOME

We have an early start this morning for our boat transfer and we will then transfer, by bus, to the airport for our departures home.

Travel to Tróia, to a former Roman fishsalting factory, and enjoy a walking tour in the Medieval town of Évora to discover its sites.

We continue our exploration of Évora this morning with a visit to the town’s museum.

Finally, we travel to Mérida, where we are staying this evening.

DAY 6: MÉRIDA

We devote an entire day to the plentiful Roman sites of Mérida, including an amphitheater and theater, the latter being one of the bestpreserved examples from across the Empire.

We begin at the monumental Carmona Necropolis, a complex of Iron Age and Roman tombs. Later, in Córdoba, we admire the Cathedral - a former mosque that remains an exceptional example of Islamic architecture.

DAY 12: MEDINA AZAHARA

We visit Medina Azahara, the ruins of a vast palace-city that once served as the capital of Muslim Spain, and then enjoy a free afternoon.

DAY 6: GRANADA

On our first full day in Nicaragua, we visit the ruins of León Viejo, which is the only colonial town in America to retain its original 16th century layout. We continue to Granada, where we tour the narrow streets and fine colonial churches. Those who dare can join us for a Masaya volcano tour in the evening.

DAY 7: GRANADA

Today we travel to the Zapatera Archipelago National Park and enjoy a boat tour of Las Isletas, an island-strewn lake with beautiful views of the volcano and impressive local houses. DAY 8: ISLA DE OMETEPE

We spend the day touring Isla de Ometepe, an island formed of two volcanoes on Lake Nicaragua that is known archaeologically for its thousands of petroglyphs, which include anthropomorphic figures, humans and more abstract designs. DAY 9: SAN JOSÉ

This morning we fly to San José, the capital of Costa Rica. Here, we have an introduction to the art and archaeology of the country at the Jade and Gold Museums. The Jade Museum holds the largest collection of pre-Columbian jade anywhere in the world, including carved pendants, vases and even jade-embedded teeth.

DAY 10: SAN JOSÉ

We drive from San José to the archaeological site of Guayabo de Turrialba. Still relatively unexplored, this magnificent city once covered over 218 hectares, before being abandoned around 1400 CE. Set in jungle clearings, the settlement included aqueducts, roads, tombs, stone carvings and many dwelling places.

Explore the incredible biodiversity of Corcovado National Park, home to jaguars, sloths, and howler monkeys. We also discover the incredible Caño Island Biological Reserve a breeding ground for humpback whales.

We begin our first full day on tour with an opening lecture from our Expert Scholar before moving onto the National Museum, where we will spend the rest of the morning. This is the largest art museum in Japan and it boasts ancient pottery, Samurai swords, beautiful kimonos and much more. Our afternoon is spent at the Palace East Garden.

DAY 4: FUKUOKA

Transfer to Haneda Airport for our flight to Fukuoka. We drive to Dazaifu upon arrival and explore the Shinto shrine Dazaifu Tenman-gū, the grounds of which have as many as 6,000 plum trees. We visit the Kyushu Historical Museum, home to interesting objects found during excavations, and the Kanzeon-ji Temple, which exhibits a broad variety of fascinating artifacts from the Nara and Heian periods.

DAY 5: FUKUOKA

Today we visit Yoshinogari, a large, complex Yayoi Period archaeological site with reconstructed prehistoric dwellings. After lunch at the site, we move on to Onta, a village famous for its pottery and traditional practices.

DAY 6: FUKUOKA

Our first visit is to Fukuoka City Museum with its permanent exhibits that detail the history of the city and the people who have made their lives there. We then stroll through the scenic Ohori Park and admire the nearby ruins of Fukuoka Castle. Later, we tour Fukuoka Asian Art Museum and Shōfuku-ji Zen temple, Japan’s very first. After, we browse the Yatai and sample local delicacies at a street food market.

DAY 7: BEPPU

We spend the morning driving to Usa Jingū, an expansive shrine dedicated to the Shinto god, Hachiman. This beautiful shrine was built in the 8th century and is surrounded by primeval forest. The grounds are home to the sacred bridge Kurehashi, as well as many significant cultural and historical buildings.

In the afternoon, we spend time exploring the fascinating historic quarters of the small, littlevisited castle town of Kitsuki.

DAY 8: BEPPU

Today we embark on a full day of temple visits, beginning with those on the Kunisaki Peninsula. We pay visits to Futago-ji, located on the slopes of Mount Futago; Fuki-ji, which is the oldest wooden structure in Kyushu and has a main hall decorated with colored pictures that portray themes of the Buddha; Kumano magaibutsu with its Buddhist reliefs, and then to Makiodo, which is home to an impressive collection of precious wooden statues.

DAY 9: MIYAZAKI

This morning, we drive to Saitobaru Kofungun, a site in Saito City comprised of hundreds of tumuli (or kofun) and rich in ancient myths. The burial mound clusters found at this enigmatic site are from the 4th to the 7th centuries and the area was designated a National Historical Site in 1952. Mystery surrounds this location as many of the tumuli are yet to be excavated. After lunch, we continue on to Miyazaki, the capital city of Miyazaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu.

This area has one of the warmest climates of Japan’s main islands and is incredibly scenic, with views of mountains and the ocean.

Our first visit this morning is to the site of Uenohara, where a series of Jōmon-era pit dwellings were discovered by construction workers in 1997. We then continue to Kagoshima, a friendly seaside city presided over by the majestic Sakurajima volcano.

It is here that we find Iso-teien, a wonderful formal garden originally created for Shimazu Mitsuhisa, ruler of the region in the 17th century. Our final visit is to Shoko Suseikan, a museum set inside of a former 19th century machine factory, where Western industrial technology was first introduced into Japan.

DAY 11: NAGASAKI

This morning is spent in Kumamoto, a city radiating outwards from the imposing Kumamoto-jo castle - one of Japan’s largest.

Both the castle and the city sustained damage in the series of earthquakes back in April 2016, which peaked at magnitude 7.3, but we will still be able to admire the well-preserved fortification from the outside. The castle was built at the beginning of the 17th century by the daimyo Kato Kiyomasa, who governed the region. In the afternoon, we take a ferry to the vibrant city of Nagasaki.

DAY 12: NAGASAKI

Today, we spend our entire day on a reconstruction of Deshima Island, where the Dutch were confined as the only remaining westerners in the country during Japan’s two centuries of isolation. Restoration of this historic site began back in the late ‘90s and we will visit carefully reconstructed Dutch houses, Chinese Buddhist temples and other important buildings as we journey back to the past during this captivating tour.

We continue our exploration of Nagasaki this morning, beginning with the Nagasaki Museum of History and Culture, which interestingly contains a reconstruction of part of the Nagasaki Magistrates Office. This museum is home to thousands of artifacts, traditional arts and crafts, and historical documents, and the exhibits located within this fantastic setting tell the story of the city and its past. We round off the morning with a visit to Glover Garden, which was built for Scottish merchant Thomas Blake Glover and is also believed to have been the inspiration for Puccini’s opera, Madame Butterfly. After lunch, we have some time to explore this beautiful area at our leisure.

DAY 14: SAGA

Today we head to Kyushu Ceramic Museum, which was founded back in 1980 and has a focus on fine Hizen porcelain. The museum also strives to preserve the cultural inheritance of this traditional art form, which is of huge local significance. Continuing our theme, we drive to Arita - known for the production of Arita porcelain - to visit the site of the Tengudani Kiln, which is thought to have been one of Japan’s first kilns where porcelain was fired. We then move on to Imari, which is renowned for its distinctive porcelain. Just outside of the town we find Okawachiyama Pottery Village, where you can still see porcelain-makers busy in their workshops.

We drive to Yame for a visit to the Traditional Craftwork Center, which showcases handmade crafts from the area. The Center displays and sells traditional items ranging from Buddhist altars to Japanese paper and delicate paper lanterns. Today we enjoy a full day in the culturally vibrant city of Nara, which was Japan’s first permanent capital. We will explore Horyuji, a Buddhist temple and UNESCO World Heritage Site that boasts the oldest wooden structure in the world. Its grounds are separated into two precincts and the temple’s main hall features some of the oldest statues of Buddha in all of Japan. We will also pay a visit to the wonderful Toshodai-ji Temple, which is surrounded by serene nature. The structure underwent an impressive renovation and was re-opened in 2009. The fascinating archaeological site at Heijo-kyu will be our final stop today and these remains of the ancient city will delight any traveler. Named as one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara, excavation surveys are constantly moving forward and this is a truly captivating site to visit.

The Ryoan-ji Zen temple is our first stop today and this UNESCO World Heritage Site features a beautifully maintained, mesmeric stone garden. This feature attracts many visitors to the temple and it has a contemplative atmosphere that can be felt while observing it.

Next, we explore the living Shokoku-ji temple before enjoying a delicious lunch at Kushikura.

In the afternoon we will tour the Sanjusangendo temple, which is revered for its 1001 golden statues of Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy.

The 120-meter temple hall is Japan’s longest wooden structure and the original structure of the temple has since been rebuilt after it was destroyed in a fire. We end our day with a walking tour around the cultural and entertainment district of Gion, Kyoto. This ambient quarter has tea houses illuminated by lanterns and a variety of traditional restaurants.

Start the morning with a visit to the Kasuga Grand Shrine – perhaps Nara’s most celebrated shrine and most famous for its myriad of both stone and bronze lanterns. Later, we enjoy the delightful Nara Deer Park, which is home to hundreds of free-roaming deer. In Shinto, deer are considered to be messengers of the gods and around 1,200 of them reside in this park, some of which have learned to bow to visitors to indicate a desire to be fed. We also make a stop at the majestic Todai-ji Temple, which has been named as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It features the impressive Nandaimon Gate, which is guarded by two well-known statues, and we also tour both the Kaidanin and Sangatsudo temples. Later on, as we travel on to Kyoto, we will visit the incredibly picturesque Byodo-in temple, which is home to the spectacular Phoenix Hall.

Visit another of Kyoto’s many UNESCO World Heritage Sites this morning as we explore To-ji temple and the ancient Matsuo Taisha shrine. The latter site is home to around 3,000 rose bushes that bloom during the months of April and May, which only add to the beauty of this already breathtaking temple. It is boasts a multitude of captivating carvings, paintings and artworks, and the Matsio Taisha shrine has deep connections to sake brewers, who still use water from the sacred well located within its walls. After lunch, we arrive at the flatland Nijo Castle and spend some time discovering its history and layout. Before it was donated to the city, the castle was used as an imperial palace and its architecture is one of the best surviving examples from Japan’s feudal era. In the evening we will return to our hotel to recharge before more touring tomorrow.

The reflective Shisen-do Villa makes for a perfect first stop today. Its garden is bursting with maple trees, the leaves of which gleam in varying shades of red and frame the area beautifully. A retired samurai named Ishikawa Jozan once resided here and he planned both the villa and garden, utilizing his extensive knowledge of both Chinese and Japanese literature and art. From here we walk Kyoto’s stunning Philosopher’s Path, which is lined with cherry trees, and we visit the elegant Ginkakuji (Silver Pavillion). This temple features a meditative sand garden and is set among transcendental landscapes. In the afternoon, we explore the Nanzen-ji temple and admire its Leaping Tiger Garden. During dinner in the evening, we will be treated to traditional Geisha entertainment and a special shamisen performance led by a Maiko.

Today we visit the Cretan archaeological site of Knossos, said to have been built by the legendary architect Dædalus to house the Minotaur. Walk among the palace buildings, which have been expertly reconstructed and preserved, before exploring a Minoan villa in Vathypetro and the museum at Archanes.

DAY 7: MALIA

Tour the grand and glorious Minoan palace of Malia, where excavations have revealed Neolithic habitation. After lunch, we take a boat to the fortress on Spinalonga - known as the home of a 20th century leper colony although its origins date back to the 16th century. Later, we drive to Agios Nikolaos.

DAY 8: LATO

Today we visit the ancient city of Lato, a postMinoan site complete with Greek agora. Lunch will be independent in Kritsa - one of the most picturesque villages in Greece, which is nestled in a steep hillside among olive groves. We tour the local area including the Panagia Kyra - a nearby church with Byzantine frescoes.

DAY 9: MOCHLOS

Enjoy a boat ride to the tiny island of Mochlos to tour the beautifully situated ruins of Chamaizi. DAY 10: SITIA

Visit Sitia Archaeological Museum, explore the ancient settlement of Palaikastro and discover the Toplou Monastery, where we can sample wine and olive oil produced by the monks.

DAY 11: RETHYMNO

We begin at the Minoan site at Gournia. Tour the recently-opened Eleftherna archaeological site and museum along with Rethymno fortress before having an independent dinner in town.

After touring the Rethymno Archaeology Museum, with its illuminating chronological collections. DAY 13: KISSAMOS

This morning we head to Souyia and catch a boat to Lissos, an ancient city famed in antiquity for its temple dedicated to Asklepios, god of healing. This afternoon, back on mainland, we visit the Manousakis Winery at Vatolakkos for a tour and sampling of their outstanding organic vintages.

DAY 3: NISA

Our day begins at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Parthian Fortresses of Nisa. We continue to Anau, where traces of habitation date back to the 4th millennium BCE. We return to Ashgabat to visit the Archaeological Museum this afternoon.

DAY 4: ALTYN ASYR

We spend our Sunday morning at Ashgabat’s oriental bazaar, Altyn Asyr, which is known for being one of the largest markets in Central Asia. There is a tall clock tower at its heart and the extensive market sells an impressive range of goods, from Turkmen carpets to local handicrafts. We fly to Merv this afternoon where we check into our hotel before settling down for dinner.

DAY 5: GONUR DEPE

We visit the archaeological site of Gonur Depe this morning. The largest ruins in the Morghab delta region can be found here, with over 150 settlements dating back to the early Bronze Age. We continue to the Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum this afternoon.

DAY 6: MERV

We tour a collection of sites in the fascinating ancient city of Merv today. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of the most important cities along the Silk Road. We explore the Tomb of Sultan Sanjar and the Erk-Kala fortress, before flying to Ashgabat later in the afternoon.

DAY 7: NUKUS

We catch a morning flight to Daşoguz and make our way to the monument-rich town of Konye-Urgench, which was once the center of the Islamic world. We also visit the captivating Khanym Mausoleum, the Najmuddin Kubra mausoleum and the Kutlug Timur Minaret.

Then we continue on to Nukus and cross the border into Uzbekistan.

DAY 8: KHIVA

We discover one of the best collections of Soviet art in the world at the Savitsky Gallery this morning. After our visit, we travel to the ‘museum city’ of Khiva.

Our morning is spent exploring Old Khiva, which was the first site in Uzbekistan to be listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After visits to Khiva Palace and the carved wooden columns of the Djuma Mosque, we enjoy the afternoon at our leisure.

DAY 10: AYAZ KALA

We rise early today and journey to Ayaz Kala.

The towering mud-brick walls of the three fortresses found here are truly a sight to behold, rising dramatically from the surrounding area.

We fly to Bukhara, ready for a day spent among the museums and mosques of the Ark Citadel.

We spend the morning at the ruined town of Paikent. In its heyday, it was home to a citadel with a Zoroastrian fire temple and several residential quarters. On our return to Bukhara, we stop at the memorial complex of Chor-Bakr.

We will also stop and visit the interesting Tomb of Baha-ud-Din Naqshband.

DAY 13: VARAKSHA

Our first stop today is Varaksha, one of the major towns of the Hephthalite civilization, and the final retreat for local kings when the Arab armies advanced. DAY 14: SAMARKAND

We travel to Samarkand, stopping at Shahrisabz, known as one of the most ancient cities along the trade routes of Central Asia.

The imposing grand ruin of the entrance arch to the Ak Sarai is a particular highlight. We arrive in Samarkand - an historic town founded in the 7th century BCE and revered for its mosques and monuments - later in the evening and then transfer to our hotel.

DAY 20: SHYMKENT

We travel to the vibrant and culturally rich city of Shymkent, entering the Kazakhstan portion of our adventure. Following a visit to the engaging Regional Museum, we end the day at the bustling Shymkent bazaar.

DAY 21: ALMATY

We spend today traveling from Taraz to Almaty, stopping for a number of scenic breaks along the way. In the evening we will drive to Kok-Tobe, a mountain known as the highest point of Almaty, where we will take a cable car to the top of the city’s 1110 meter hill to enjoy breathtaking views over the city.

DAY 22: TAMGALY

We travel to Tamgaly, a wonderful UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to around 5,000 petroglyphs and set among a breathtaking gorge. The incredible carvings that can be found there date from the second half of the second millennium BCE to the beginning of the 20th century. Later in the day, we will return to Almaty where we can recharge at our hotel.

DAY 23: ALMATY

We enjoy a relaxed start to the day at Almaty Central State Museum. Following visits to Panfilov Park and the local Green Bazaar, the rest of the day will be spent at our leisure.

We explore the largest reserve of Kazakhstan today - the Altyn-Emel Park, home to a variety of landscapes from sand desert to mountains.

DAY 25: ALMATY

DAY 26: ÜRÜMQI

We enjoy a final morning in Almaty, which we can spend at our leisure, before flying to Ürümqi - Xīnjiāng’s capital in China.

We arrive in Ürümqi early this morning and travel to our hotel. After some time to relax and recharge, we venture out to tour the area with its impressive stature and fast-growing reputation as a central Asian hub. Xīnjiāng’s capital truly is a modern city, edged by a distant preview of the majestic Tiān Shān mountains.

There is a distinct fusion of tradition with contemporary architecture in this area that adds to its appeal, and this unique blend of the old with the new hints at what is to come.

DAY 28: SHUIMOGOU PARK

We begin today at the Xinjiang Regional Museum – a large integrated museum and center for the collection and study of cultural relics discovered in the region. We continue to the stunning Shuimogou Park, home to a number of ecological delights including the famous Shuimogou Hot Spring. We end the day at the authentic and exciting Grand Bazaar.

DAY 29: TURPAN

Today we travel to Turpan, which is located in a depression 154 meters below sea level and is also known as the hottest part of China. Here, we embark upon a walking tour of ‘China’s Death Valley’, which sees extreme temperatures impacting the area as the seasons change. This is a fascinating place with much to discover.

DAY 30: TURPAN

We continue exploring Turpan today and begin at the Imin Ta mosque, which boasts China’s tallest minaret. Following a visit to Turpan Museum, we drive to the archaeological site of the Jiaohe Ruins - one of the most amazingly preserved ancient cities of its time in China.

DAY 31: JIAYUGUAN

We travel to the prefecture-level city of Jiayuguan today. Following a quick tour, the rest of the day will be spent at our leisure. This area has a fascinating history, which we will explore in more depth during our day of visits tomorrow, and is perhaps most famous for its impressive fort, which was built in 1372. DAY 32: GREAT WALL OF CHINA

We begin the day at the striking Jiaguyuan fort, once a vital traffic fort along the Silk Road.

Our next stop needs no introduction as we pay a visit to the legendary Great Wall of China. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Great Wall is over 20,000 kilometers in length and is a significant historical feature of the country.

We explore Tiananmen Square this morning.

This morning we will view Bonifacio’s old buildings remaining from the Pisan and Genoese periods, as well as its fortifications, built in 830 CE by a Tuscan margrave in order to repel a Saracen attack. We travel to the island of Gozo today. The wellpreserved temples of Ggantija have massive walls, some of which still rise to a height of 17 feet. We also visit the collections at the Archaeological Museum and the Citadel in the Norman town of Victoria.

Today we depart Malta for Sardinia, flying via Rome. We arrive in the late evening and transfer to our hotel.

This morning we discover Sardinia’s capital city, Cagliari. From its Archaeological Museum to a walking tour of the old town with its impressive 13th century Romanesque Gothic cathedral, and to the Roman Ampitheater, we visit a myriad of interesting sites. DAY 8: NORA

Today’s itinerary takes us to a variety of Phoenician sites, beginning with a scenic coastal drive to Nora. Here we visit the city’s Punic temple along with its Roman theater and baths. We continue to the volcanic island of Sant’Antioco to see a tophet and later, at Monte Sirai, we tour a Phoenician mining town.

DAY 5: JERUSALEM

This morning we will visit the Temple Mount, which is considered to be the holiest site in Judaism. It features the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. DAY 6: YAD VASHEM

The beginning of our day will be spent at Yad Vashem, which is Israel’s official memorial to the victims of the Holocaust. After lunch, we will embark upon a walking tour of Ein Karem.

This is an ancient village that attracts many pilgrims and is also, according to Christian tradition, where John the Baptist was born.

DAY 7: JERUSALEM

We start off at the archaeological site of Herodium, which was built by King Herod.

Later, we continue to the impressive caves of Beit Guvrin. This is a national park at the heart of the ‘Land of a Thousand Caves’. We will also tour Tel Maresha, home to vast underground labyrinths that are steeped in history.

DAY 8: DEAD SEA

Traveling south, we make a stop at the Nabataean city of Mamshit. This is the most well-preserved of the desert cities of the Negev.

We then descend to the Dead Sea, which has incredibly high levels of saline enabling bathers to float effortlessly, and here we can indulge in a welcome afternoon swim.

DAY 9: MASADA

We visit the great ancient fortress of Masada, where our lecturer once led excavations. It has a dramatic history and truly embodies rugged, natural beauty. We then travel to the somewhat isolated yet enigmatic archaeological site of Qumran, which is where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found.

DAY 10: BET SHE’AN

Our touring continues at Roman ruins in Beit She’an, one of the oldest cities in Israel and also where excavations are still very much underway. This afternoon we will explore two synagogues - namely Beit Alpha and Hammat Tiberias - that house enchanting and extensive mosaics that depict animals and a zodiac.

DAY 11: HAIFA

Today we visit Capernaum, the site of Jesus’ three-year ministry, and Tabgha, where the multiplication of the loaves and fishes is said to have taken place. After lunch we board the train for a scenic journey to Carnac.

DAY 4: SAINT-MICHEL

We begin our fourth day exploring sites of the Carnac Alignments and Carnac’s Museum of Prehistory. After lunch, we continue to SaintMichel, the biggest Megalithic burial mound in all of Europe. We later proceed to the Cromlech of Kerbourgnec before returning to our hotel by way of a beautiful coastal road.

DAY 5: GAVRINIS

Today we discover the Table des Marchands, Er Grah and the stupendous Broken Menhir the largest single block of stone ever known to have been transported and erected by Neolithic man. This afternoon, we take a reviving boat ride to Gavrinis, a small uninhabited island.

DAY 6: PONT-AVEN

Beginning at the Kerzerho Alignments, some 190 standing stones covering more than a mile overall. Later, we make our way to the gorgeous Pont-Aven, where we embark on an enlightening walking tour and learn more about this riverside port’s history, including its links with the artist Paul Gaugin.

DAY 7: MENEZ DREGAN

We find a lower Palaeolithic site here that shows evidence of habitation from as far back as 500,000 BCE. First taking in the Finisterian Museum of Prehistory in Saint-Guénole, we move on to the charming Church of Notre Dame de Tronoën, where the remains of terracotta figures were famously uncovered.

DAY 8: LOCRONAN

We set off for the elegant village of Locronan this morning, where a walking tour sheds light on a heritage of revered Irish travelers. DAY 9: MOUGAU-BILHAN

Departing Quimper, we head for the covered alley of Mougau-Bihan and later, we divide to take turns to view the little-known site of Roc Toull Cave as well as Guimiliau’s Parish Close.

In the afternoon we visit the megalithic cairn at Tumulus de Barnenez along with the ancient site and covered alley of Crech-Quille.

DAY 10: SAINT-MALO

From the Neolithic passage grave La-RocheAux-Fées, we proceed to the woodland grave of Maison-des-Fées - or the Fairies’ House. After lunch in Brittany’s capital Rennes, we then visit Menhir de Champ-Dolent - the region’s largest standing stone at over 9 meters - and finish in the atmospheric port of Saint-Malo.

We start with a private tour at Stonehenge before it opens to the public. Following this, we visit Woodhenge, the Durrington Walls and Old Sarum. Day 8: LAKE BAIKAL 1

walls of this ancient citadel we will explore its stunning mosque and picture-perfect oniondomed cathedral. As Kazan is the birthplace of one of Russia’s most famous opera singers, Feodor Chaliapin (1873–1938), we honor his memory with a private concert of his music.

Day 4: YEKATERINBURG

Known as the Great Divide, the Ural Mountains create the natural border between Europe and Asia. Cultural and architectural influences come together seamlessly here to create a fascinating, cosmopolitan landscape.

Our city tour then brings us to the poignant site where the Romanov, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, was executed with his family by the Bolsheviks in 1918 after a total of 78 days of imprisonment. Now standing as a church dedicated to their memory, this site provides us with a powerful insight into the incredible turmoil of the Russian Revolution. We will also drive to the obelisk that marks the geographical border, where we can indulge in a glass of champagne with one foot in Europe and the other in Asia. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and well worth commemorating.

Day 5 & 6: NOVOSIBIRSK

We arrive in the modern ‘Soviet’ city in the afternoon and experience the life and character of Novosibirsk’s rich culture. The arts and sciences predominate here and the city is located in the heart of Russia - situated on both banks of the River Ob. There are many treelined streets and quiet parks in this area, which make the city an ideal location for a relaxing walk. Our engaging tour takes us to Lenin Square, where the imposing Opera House one of our stops - is located. An architectural marvel, it houses two amazing permanent ballet and opera companies, and one of the latter is considered to be one of the largest opera houses in the world today. In front of the formidable edifice, we visit an impressive statue of Lenin — this is a marvelous opportunity to have your photograph taken alongside the iconic political leader.

Day 7: IRKUTSK

After a day spent on board the Trans-Siberian Express we arrive in Irkutsk, known as the ‘Paris of Siberia’. We take in the most significant sites and museums in this fascinating city, including an exploration of the classic wooden architecture with its intricately carved lace-like decorations, a style that has given many of this region’s buildings such a distinctive and

Few natural sights can surpass the beauty and grandeur of Lake Baikal — a major highlight on our journey. Known as the ‘Pearl of Siberia’, it is home to a unique breed of freshwater seal and over fifty species of fish. We wind our way through tunnels and travel along cliff-hugging tracks above the lake with a vista of snowcapped peaks that form a perfect backdrop. To add to the grandeur of the day, our wonderful Golden Eagle train will be hauled by a Soviet Era steam locomotive on this beautiful section of the line. There will be plenty of opportunities to take photographs of the astounding outside scenery as we curve along the lake.

DAY 9: ULAN UDE

The Buryat capital is one of Eastern Siberia’s most likeable cities. The ethnic and cultural diversity of Ulan Ude offers a unique insight into its heritage. As we tour the area you will notice the welcoming spirit of the Buryat people. During our exploration of the Old Believers’ Village we have the opportunity to learn about the fascinating heritage and rich histories of these religious people, and we are treated to a concert showcasing local traditions and folk singing. Ulan Ude also offers a first taste of what’s to come on Day 10, when our Trans-Siberian experience finally reaches the enigmatic nation of Mongolia: a country of beautiful landscapes, nomadic people and captivating culture.

DAY 10: ULAANBAATAR

Upon arrival in Mongolia we visit its surprising and commercial capital, Ulaanbaatar. Mongolia is mostly famous for its endless green steppes, grazing livestock and white, nomadic Gers (Yurts) dotted all across the countryside, but this city is progressive, vibrant and undeniably exciting. We begin at Gandan Monastery, one of Mongolia’s most important Buddhist Monasteries. We have the option to travel out of the city and into the heart of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park to enjoy the beautiful scenery of wild Mongolia. Alternatively, you may wish to stay in Ulaanbaatar and visit the National Museum. This evening, we enjoy a unique treat that is sure to linger in the memory - a thrilling live performance of traditional Mongolian throat-singing.

DAY 11-13: ON BOARD

The next three days are spent at a more leisurely pace on board the train. Watch the undeniably beautiful landscapes fly past the windows, stimulate your mind with the interesting lectures that are regularly held on board, or perhaps attend one of the many Russian language lessons. You can also just simply relax as you meditate on our previous days along with the new experiences and memories they have created. The classicallydecorated bar car, which sometimes plays host to a live musician, might be a great place to chat with your fellow travelers and share stories from your journey so far, or instead you may wish to peruse the train’s extensive DVD collection and unwind with a movie. From the windows, we can observe the most remote and striking parts of Russia, and the views that this route affords us are nothing short of

DAY 14: VLADIVOSTOK

spectacular. As we make our way towards the historically significant city of Vladivostok, we can learn a little more about its past. This area was of such vital martial importance that it was actually closed to foreigners between the years of 1930 and 1992. It is a breathtaking place with mountains, a whole network of bays and a magnificent bridge that crosses the Eastern

Bosphorous strait. The city is home to a diverse range of attractions, as well as many fantastic bars and restaurants that highlight the local flavor, and there will be ample time to discover some of these gems once we finally arrive here tomorrow.

Today we finally reach Vladivostok and have the opportunity to visit a number of interesting military attractions if we so wish. Aside from the preserved World War II submarine, which makes for a fascinating stop in itself, there is the Old Vladivostok Fortress. Interestingly, construction on this began after defense fortifications needed to be significantly improved during the Russian-Japanese war of 1904-1905. In 2016, a daily cannon shot was reintroduced to the area after this tradition, which had ceased eight years previously, was deeply missed and petitioned for by local citizens. The architectural heritage of the city is also incredibly rich and it incorporates the Gothic, Romanesque, Baroque and Asian styles into the buildings that stand there. To celebrate our final night, we join one last time as a group and have a special farewell dinner where we can toast the past two weeks.

This morning we travel to the Rouffignac Caves, which is home to over 250 engravings and paintings, and then the impressive formation of La Roque Saint-Christophe.

The replica cave art archaeological site Lascaux II is next, along with the Le Thot museum, which is dedicated to the Cro-Magnon period.

DAY 1 & 2: MADRID

Upon arrival in Madrid, we drive to Burgos and visit its castle before enjoying an introductory lecture and a welcome group dinner.

DAY 3: ATAPUERCA

We begin at Atapuerca, where many skeletons have been uncovered along with ancient DNA. We head north to Cantabria, stopping for lunch at a former Cluniac monastery. This afternoon we visit the amazing Monte Castillo cave complex, where we will come face to face with painted bison and mammoth.

DAY 4: EL PINDAL

We tour El Pindal, which houses notable examples of Palaeolithic art including depictions of fish. We continue to Ribadesella to visit Tito Bustillo, a vast alcove-rich cave and striking new museum. Sealed away for millennia, art that is up to 40,000 years old survives in a remarkably well-preserved state.

DAY 5: EKAIN

We enjoy a visit to the Altamira II replica cave and museum, which has excellent interpretive materials. After lunch, we drive east along the Cantabrian coast, which is known for its mountain-ringed estuaries, witnessing stunning scenic views. As we enter the Basque country, we explore the replica cave of Ekain.

DAY 13: DORDOGNE 1

DAY 6: PYRÉNÉES

We begin our ascent into the foothills of the Pyrénées, a land of cave art and Cathar castles. Our first stop is Saint-Bertrandde-Comminges, founded on an important Gallo-Roman city. We continue to the evocative Gargas Cave, famous for its stenciled handprint alcoves and fissures, drenched with red ochre.

DAY 7: NIAUX

Renowned historian Jean Clottes is our guide today at Niaux cave. He will bring alcoves decorated with horse, bison and ibex paintings to life. In the afternoon, we tour the Prehistoric Art Park and move on to visit the incomparable site of Mas-d’Azil and its museum, before finally returning to our hotel for dinner.

DAY 8: PECH MERLE

Heading north across the Garonne Valley to Quercy, we marvel at the Pont Valentré in Cahors. After lunch, we explore the immense, flowstone-laden galleries and decorated alcoves of Pech Merle. Described as “an art gallery in a palace of nature” by René Teyssédou, this truly is a highlight of our already fascinating tour.

DAY 9: SOUILLAC

We continue to the Santiago pilgrimage stop of Rocamadour, where cliffside temples preserve Cluniac frescoes. After a brief visit to the abbey of Sainte-Marie in Souillac, which has a rare Cluniac sculpture of Isaiah, we explore caves decorated with Irish elk in Cougnac, and travel on to the beautiful area of Les-Eyzies-de-Tayac.

DAY 10: LES EYZIES

Today we explore the paintings and engravings at Bernifal Cave. We will also visit the prehistoric site at Abri Cro-Magnon. In the afternoon, Christine Desdemaines-Hugon will give a lecture and after that we will tour the prehistoric limestone rock shelter of Cap Blanc, which boasts Magdalenian animal sculptures.

We leave the Dorgdogne and drive through beautiful landscapes to Vallon Pont d’Arc. There are opportunities to stop and take photographs along the way as this route is simply stunning.

Our tour concludes with a visit to the Chauvet replica cave and museum. This area uncovered the most spectacular Palaeolithic imagery and the paintings are at least 25,000 years old. We will indulge in a farewell lunch this afternoon.

Today we transfer to Marseille airport or Valence train station and the depart for our flights back home.

DAY 3: STOCKHOLM

We begin our first full day in Scandinavia with a visit to Vasamuseet, a maritime museum named after the 17th century ship that is its centerpiece and we also tour the Swedish History Museum. After lunch in the old town area of Gamla Stan, we continue with a walking tour of Stockholm’s Medieval streets.

DAY 4: UPPSALA

Following breakfast, we make our way to Uppsala’s cathedral, Domkyrkan, a 13th century monument celebrated as the tallest church in the Nordic countries. Later, we head to Gamla Uppsala Museum and the Gothic Church of St Mary’s in Sigtuna.

DAY 5: BJÖRKÖ

We make like Vikings this morning and take to the sea on a ferry from Stockholm to the beautiful island of Björkö. Following a barbecue buffet lunch, we embark on a walking tour to Birka Vikingastaden, an impressive UNESCO World Heritage Site.

DAY 13: OSLO 1

DAY 6: ANUNDSHÖG

In the morning we drive to Anundshög, where we find Sweden’s largest burial mound, which is a final resting place for royalty. Our next stop is Sigurdsristningen, where we view the mysterious standing stones and Ramsund carving. We return to Stockholm later in the afternoon and explore the city at our leisure.

DAY 7: COPENHAGEN

This morning we fly from Stockholm to cosmopolitan Copenhagen. In the afternoon we visit the historic city of Lund’s magnificent cathedral, which is considered to be a masterpiece of Romanesque architecture. It was consecrated in 1145 and is home to fascinating artifacts. After this visit we will go to our hotel.

DAY 8: COPENHAGEN

We visit Copenhagen’s National Museum, which displays material that covers Danish prehistory - most notably the Gundestrup cauldron. In the afternoon we drive to the village of Gammel Lejre, which is home to fascinating archaeological sites, where we can tour its engaging excavations and museum.

DAY 9: ZEALAND

Beginning at the Roskilde Domkirke, which has splendid royal chapels and was built in the striking Gothic style, we move on to discover the exhibits at the Viking Ship Museum.

It houses five preserved ships that were excavated from Roskilde fjord. In the afternoon, we enjoy a tour of the city by bus.

DAY 10: TRELLEBORG

Today we stop at the impressive Trelleborg Fort, where we can experience the Viking Age first hand. After crossing the Great Belt Bridge, we go to Ladby to visit the Ladbyskibet Viking Chief burial site. A walking tour of historic Odense precedes a tour of Jelling’s burial mound for the Viking king, Gorm the Old. Hotel: Radisson Blu, Copenhagen All meals included.

After breakfast on board, we disembark in Norway’s capital and waste no time heading straight for the Kulturhistorisk Museum.

We break for lunch at a contemporary brasserie before discovering the sites of Oslo on foot.

Today we visit the museum Vikingskipshuset, which houses three 9th century Viking ships.

Our sixth day begins with a drive east to Skáholt, which was one of Iceland’s leading religious, cultural and political centers for several centuries. While here, we enter Skáholt church and tour the neighbouring excavation site. The afternoon sees us exploring the amazing geothermal, hot-spring area of Geysir.

In the morning we tour a man-made cave at Hellnahellir that dates from at least the 12th century. Our next stop is the excavation site at Thjodveldisbaerinn, which hosts ruins of a Viking manor. After lunch, we visit the reconstructed farmstead of Stöng, the Saga Center and the incredible waterfall, Skogafoss.

We discover the various artifacts housed at Skogar Museum before visiting Iceland Erupts, which is a unique exhibition at the foot of the volcano Eyjafjallajökull. Natural wonders continue to amaze us today as we visit the sublime Jökulsarlon Glacier Lagoon - a majestic lake that glitters with floating icebergs. DAY 11: AKUREYRI

We begin the day with a visit to the enchanting Grenjaðarstaður turf houses and then we drive to the incredible waterfall, Godafoss. It is undeniably one of Iceland’s most phenomenal natural sites. This morning, we travel to the tiny community of Hólar, which was declared the Episcopal see of northern Iceland in the 10th century. While here, we also visit Hólar cathedral, which is one of the country’s earliest stone churches and was erected in 1763. After lunch, we visit Thingeyrar Church, another of Iceland’s early stone churches and the site of the country’s first monastery. Don’t forget to look up before you leave because Thingeyrar’s starry ceiling truly is a sight to behold.

DAY 13: EIRIKSSTADIR

Our final full day in Iceland begins with a trip to the amazing Viking longhouse at Eiriksstadir. We spend a remarkable day exploring the now uninhabited site of Delos, a UNESCO World Heritage site. About the gulet

This tour is especially unique as it will see us board a gulet, which is a traditional Turkish sailing vessel, for a luxurious cruise on the azure Aegean. Gulets, now, are typically used for private charter and many are not properly rigged for sailing. Our ship is equipped with air conditioned cabins that come with shower and WC facilities, and a kitchen that boasts incredible views across the ocean. After lunch at a nearby restaurant, we will move on to the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Guggenheim. This morning we depart New York and make our way south to Philadelphia - the first and only UNESCO World Heritage City in the United States. Noted for its impressive variety of both Western and Asian artwork, this museum boasts pieces by all manner of masters, from the likes of Bosch to Duchamp and Rubens.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art also includes a one-acre, terraced Sculpture Garden that has been carefully integrated into the surrounding

Today sees us enjoying the first of our full two days that will be spent in some of Washington DC’s 17 prestigious Smithsonian Institutions. This stop is rich in artifacts, media and photographs, and its exhibits bring Native voices to life. On this, the final day of our cultural and historical exploration of the great USA, we delve deeper into the Smithsonian’s fabulous array of museums. The recently renovated Freer and Sackler Galleries host us first, both of which are acclaimed museums of Asian art with pieces spanning some 6,000 years of history. We stand in awe of the ancient Egyptian coffin masks, pore over pristine illustrations from Japan’s Edo period, and view sophisticated and intricate Islamic ceramics from the 10th to the 13th centuries. We continue our exploration this morning at Suzdal Kremlin - archaeological evidence suggests it was settled as early as the 10th century. We visit St. Ephimius, where we hear the ringing of the bells, and tour other important sites. Then we drive to Vladimir and tour the magnificent Assumption Cathedral.

This morning we head to Yaroslavl and visit Spassky Monastery, which was originally built on the site of a pagan temple in the late 12th century. DAY 8: NOVGOROD

Our first visit today is to Yuriev Monastery, which is among Russia’s earliest. The ancient Novgorod Kremlin, which stands on the left bank of the Volkhov River, is our next stop.

We begin at enchanting Etchmiadzin, the country’s spiritual capital. Here we explore the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral - a UNESCO World Heritage site constructed during the Byzantine era. We tour Etchmiadzin Cathedral and then the Matenadaran, which houses a myriad of priceless books and manuscripts.

DAY 6: NORAVANK

This morning we make our way to Khor Virap, a 7th century monastery stunningly located on the open plains near Mount Ararat. We then tour Noravank, which is a 13th century monastery that houses the ornate tomb of Prince Tarsayich Orbelian, and the fascinating early Bronze Age site at Areni Cave.

DAY 7: DILIJAN

After breakfast we set out to discover the sights of Dilijan - a gorgeous alpine town known as Little Switzerland by locals - and then move on to Haghartsin, which is a complex of churches and an intriguing hollow column. We depart Amman and spend the morning touring the Desert Castles - a formidable set of Arabic fortifications which historically served a variety of purposes. After pausing for lunch at the Chechan restaurant in Azraq Lodge, we take in more of the Desert Castles and continue to Umm el-Jimal, which has retained many of its canals, and also visit a late Roman temple.

It’s time to go off road! We hop into 4x4s and spend the whole day roaming the martian landscapes of Wadi al-Quattafi and the Black Desert. DAY 8: UM AR-RASAS

We set off for the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Um ar-Rasas, a former Roman garrison now prized for its masterful Byzantine mosaics.

DAY 7: LUXOR

We cross the Nile to explore the Valley of the Kings and Queens, which is home to the tomb of Tutankhamun. After spending some time here, we go to the Temple of Queen Hatsheput - who was once the 5th Pharaoh of the 18th dynasty of Egypt at Deir el-Bahri.

Located on the west bank of the Nile, this complex mortuary of temples and tombs in the necropolis of Thebes is a truly spectacular monument steeped in captivating history.

We spend our morning at Balamkú, a small site that contains the longest surviving Mayan frieze in the world. This epic site dates back to the 6th century and was undiscovered until the 1990s. We depart the area and drive south to Palenque in preparation for the next two days of fascinating archaeological adventures.

Our final full day is spent traveling to San Juan Chamula, a Tzotzil Maya town famed for its unusual church. Animal sacrifices take place here even to this day. We start our day at the Archaeological Museum. Located in an 18th century fortress beside the Gulf of Mexico, within the museum’s majestic walls we uncover various artifacts from regional excavations and other relics, including two impressive jade death masks.

Situated in thick jungle near the Guatemalan border, Calakmul was once one of the largest Mayan lowland cities in Mexico. Today we explore Becán, a pre-Columbian site that was rediscovered in the 1930s. Becán has a long history as a ceremonial center and holds some of the oldest defences in Mexico. Palenque is one of the most outstanding ceremonial centers we will see during our trip.

Rising out of the jungle, Palenque’s fine set of ruins includes a stately observation tower. This afternoon we visit Palenque Museum, which displays statues, reliefs, an ancient throne and a copy of the lid of King Pacal’s sarcophagus.

Expert Scholars Prof. Craig Benjiman He is an Associate Professor in the History Department at Grand Valley State University in Michigan, where he teaches courses in ancient Central and East Asian history, and also on the Silk Roads.

Mehreen Chida-Razvi A Research Associate in the Department of the History of Art at SOAS and also the Assistant Editor for the International Journal of Islamic Architecture, she has lectured and consulted extensively.

Ian Colvin Specializing in the late Byzantine and Roman history of the Caucasus regions, he earned his MST in Byzantine studies and subsequently devoted himself to the excavations at the site of Nokalakevi.

Lucia Gahlin She is a specialist in the archaeology of Egypt and is also an Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Archaeology, University College London. She has since worked at the Petrie Museum in London.

Dr. Oren Gutfeld

Prof. Kennith W. Harl Professor of Classical and Byzantine History at Tulane University, he earned his PhD from Yale and is a distinguished scholar. He has been interviewed by the BBC and History Channel for specials.

Dr. Kim Hunter-Gordon A journalist and historian of late imperial and modern China, he has lived in China for over a decade and has published travel guides and academic articles, while translating the arias of Kunqu opera.

Dr. Nicholas James He has worked on the archaeology of South American Indians for over 35 years and is the author of “Aztecs & Maya”. He graduated from and has taught at Oxford, and leads many tours in Latin America.

Dr. Veronica Kalas After earning her MA and PhD degrees from NYU’s Institute of Fine Arts, she is an art and architectural historian as well as an archaeologist, who specializes in the ancient and Medieval Byzantine periods.

He earned his BA, MA and PhD in Classical Archaeology from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Institute of Archaeology, and he has over twenty years’ experience in directing excavations.

Dr. Roy Larick Now the Adjunct Assistant Professor of Anthropology at the University of Iowa, he explores sites in East Asia for evidence of the first human inhabitants outside of Africa and also focuses on climate science.

Prof. Alexei Leporc After studying at St. Petersburg State University and the University of Vienna, he worked as an Assistant Professor and then as the Curator of 19th and 20th century prints at the Hermitage Museum.

Prof. Jodi Magness She is the President of the AIA and also the Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Tom Rasmussen

He gained his PhD at Cambridge and has lectured in ancient Mediterranean art and archaeology at Manchester University. He has conducted fieldwork in Italy and is published in Etruscan and Roman art & archaeology.

Dr. Yorke Rowan Is a senior research associate at the Oriental Institute, University of Chicago, and the Director of the Galilee Prehistory Project. He is currently preparing a monograph of his work on the first phase.

Prof. David Rupp An experienced field archaeologist, academic and resident of Athens, he served as a member of Brock University’s faculty for thirty years and is now the President of Athens College in Greece.

Prof. Willam Saturno He is Assistant Professor of Archaeology at Boston University and has conducted research in Mexico, Honduras and Belize.

He discovered the remote archaeological site of San Bartolo in 2001.

Prof. Gerald Schaus He has excavated at Cyrene in Libya as well as at sites in Italy and Greece. He is President of the Canadian Archaeological Institute in Athens and recently retired as Professor at Wilfred Laurier University.

Prof. Ori Z. Soltes A Professorial Lecturer at Georgetown University, his many academic honors include an NEH Fellowship in SyroPalestinian Archaeology at ASOR. He has led numerous Archaeological Tours trips.

Booking Conditions Please read these carefully before booking with us on tour

THE TOUR RATE INCLUDES: Transportation: Surface travel by bus as indicated in the itinerary.

Transfers: Arrival and departure transfers are included between airport and initial and final group hotels.

Hotels: Rooms with private bathroom, as listed or similar.

Meals: Most meals are included.

Baggage allowance: One checked suitcase and one carry-on bag that will fit under your seat.

Tipping: All gratuities to local guides, drivers, waiters and porters are included.

NOT INCLUDED IN THE TOUR RATE: International airfare, passport fees, airport taxes, visas, excess baggage charges, insurance, beverages (in some countries) and items not on menus.

TARIFFS: Based on rates and airfares in effect July 2017 and subject to change.

DEPOSITS & PAYMENTS: A deposit of $750 per person is required to book (except for the Silk Road and TransSiberian Express which require deposits of $1,500 per person). Final payment for all tours is due twelve weeks before departure.

RESPONSIBILITY: ARCHAEOLOGICAL TOURS in accepting bookings for the tour, clearly stipulates that it is not liable for the faults or defaults of other companies and persons that may be used in the carrying out of the tour services; also for accidents, baggage losses, delays, strikes, political unrest, riots and acts of God and war.

In the event it becomes necessary or for any reason whatsoever, to alter the itinerary or arrangements, such alterations may be made without penalty to the operator. Additional expenses, if any, shall be borne by the passengers.

The right is also reserved to withdraw this tour; also to decline to accept or retain any persons as members of the tour.

No refunds can be made for absence from the tour unless arrangements are made at the time of booking.

IATA carriers concerned are not to be held responsible for acts, omissions or events during the time passengers are not on board. The contract in use by the companies concerned shall constitute the sole contract between the company and the purchaser of these tours and/or passengers.

CANCELLATIONS: In the event of cancellations the charge which will be made varies with the amount of time between Archaeological Tours receiving your written cancellation and the tour departure date. The charges made for our tours are as follows: • Up to 84 days before departure date: deposit • 83 – 63 days before departure date: 35% of tour cost • 62 – 42 days before departure date: 55% of tour cost • 41 – 21 days before departure date: 75% of tour cost • 21 days before departure date: 100% of tour cost.

Penalties are also levied on the single supplement. Insurance is recommended.

A NOTE ABOUT SINGLE ROOMS: For those traveling alone but who prefer to share with another, we will endeavor to work out congenial rooming arrangements. If a single room must be assigned due to the roommate’s canceling or incompatibility, or for any other reason, even if at the last moment or while on tour, the single supplement or prorate thereof must be collected.
