This classic work from the fourth century expounds with simplicity the theological vision defended at the councils of Nicaea and Constantinople, and it has become one of the few “must read” books about the Christian faith.
to us today. Until very recently, however, little of his work had been available in English, save for some collections of brief reflections arranged in centuries and a few brief treatises, too easily classified as “spirituality.” This volume provides translations from St Maximus’ two main collections of theological reflections, his Ambigua (or Difficulties) and his Questions to Thalassius, plus one of his Christological opuscula, hitherto unavailable in English.

Christian tradition often seems to give only grudging approval to married life, particularly its sexual aspect. In these sermons of St John Chrysostom we find an important corrective to this view. Although himself a monk, Chrysostom had a profound understanding of the needs of his congregation. Inspired by the Epistles to the Corinthians and Ephesians, he discusses the reasons God instituted marriage. Chrysostom goes on to discuss sexual relations, the mutual responsibilities of marriage, and parenting.

ALEXANDER SCHMEMANN
St Irenaeus was, undisputedly, the most important theologian of the second century who laid a firmer foundation for all future Christian thinkers. Both in his work, Against the Heresies, and in this present study, Demonstration of the Apostolic Preaching, St Irenaeus explains that there is but one God, made known to the human race by His one Son, Jesus Christ, through the one Holy Spirit, and this one God brings His creatures made from dust into intimate communion with Himself. Writing in an age not unlike our own, among a plethora of religions and diverse gods, he exhorts his readers to hold fast to Scripture, which recounts the deeds that bring them into the covenant established by God.
The Orthodox Way
For the Life of the World
In this book, Schmemann suggests an approach to the world and life within it that stems from the liturgical experience of the Orthodox Church. This updated edition of Schmemann’s classic text includes a new foreword by Dr Edith M. Humphrey, along with new explanatory notes and an index.

The Winter Pascha THOMAS HOPKO
“When the winter begins to make way into the Northern World, the Church of Christ begins to celebrate a ‘splendid three-day Pascha.’” Thus Fr Thomas Hopko begins the first of forty meditations for the season of Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany, ending with the feast of the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple on the fortieth day after Christ’s birth. In the style of his popular book for the paschal fasting season, The Lenten Spring, the author draws on the biblical readings and liturgical hymns and verses of the season to illumine the way for believers to enter fully into the reality of the coming of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in human flesh. Many references are made to the writings of the saints and Church Fathers, as well as to contemporary Christian teachers and spiritual guides.

The Mystical Theology of the Eastern Church
•
In this classic study of Orthodox theology, the author states that “in a certain sense all theology is mystical, inasmuch as it shows forth the divine mystery: the data of revelation. The eastern tradition has never made a sharp distinction between mysticism and theology, between personal experience and the divine mysteries and the dogma affirmed by the Church. The term “mystical theology” denotes the realm of human experience, that which is accessible yet inaccessible; those things understood yet surpassing all knowledge.
St Gregory of Nazianzus says that this treatise—a classic expression of the Church’s faith in the Spirit and a lasting testimony to St Basil’s Christian erudition—was “written by a pen borrowed from the Spirit’s store.”

PREPARE, O BETHLEHEM:
A reflection on the feast of the Nativity of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ from St Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminar y Associate Professor of Patristics and Popular Patristics Series (PPS) editor, F R B O G D A N B U C U R As Orthodox Christians prepare to celebrate Christmas, they have the privilege of (re-)learning their theology from the rich hymnography of the Church. Rather than melancholy dreaming of a white Christmas, a “magic” season populated by Santa and his elves, Coca Cola, hot chocolate, and lots and lots of shopping, the hymns speak of the overwhelmingly good news of a Nativity surpassing understanding: Today is born of a virgin He who holds the whole creation in His hand. He whose essence none can touch is bound in swaddling clothes as a mortal man. God, who in the beginning fashioned the heavens, lies in a manger. He who rained manna on his people in the wilderness is fed on milk from His mother’s breast. The Bridegroom of the Church summons the wise men; the Son of the virgin accepts their gifts. … We worship Thy birth, O Christ! … (Eve of the Nativity, sticheron at the Ninth Royal Hour). A baby born in poverty, wrapped in swaddling clothes, sucking milk at His mother’s breasts—one of us! The point, however, is that this baby is also the Maker and Fashioner of the universe (“who holds creation in the hollow of His hand,” “who established the heavens”); also the Lord God of Israel, who freed his people from slavery, led it and fed it miraculously in the desert; also the light of all mankind, who summons the pagan stargazers, and, as another hymn (the Nativity troparion) says, taught them to worship the sun of righteousness rising in Bethlehem. This baby, we are told, is the Bridegroom of the Church, and, as we have promised at Baptism, we bow down to Him in worship. The icon of the Nativity—as a matter of fact, any icon of Christ— teaches the same truth, by showing a halo around the baby’s head, inscribed with Greek letters spelling “He Who Is.” This is the name that God reveals to Moses on Mount Sinai: ego eimi ho ōn, “he who is,” “the existing one,” the one beyond being. We learn the same truth, yet again, from the worship of the Church: “Today the Virgin gives birth to the One beyond being”!

We all have an opportunity to leave the frantic rush to get the sweetest deals, the perfect gift, the most creative decorations, and to allow our liturgical worship to collect our minds and hearts, to assist us in drawing near and directing our gaze on the mystery: Open to me the gates, and entering within, I shall see as a child wrapped in swaddling clothes Him who upholds the creation in the hollow of His hand … (Vespers of the Forefeast of the Nativity, Apostichon); A strange and most wonderful mystery do I see: the cave is heaven; the Virgin—the throne of the cherubim (Canon of the Nativity: Ode 9, Eirmos). As the Law given at Sinai had to be spoken again and again across the generations, Scripture itself helped its hearers understand that God’s call did not lie in the past and in some other place: “Not with our ancestors did the Lord establish this covenant, but with you—all of you here, who are alive today” (Deut 5.3). So also with the stranger and even more wonderful mystery of the Son one-in-essence with the Father taking on flesh of our flesh and becoming one of us: we do not sing to remember the little town of Bethlehem two thousand years ago. It is for us that the call goes out: Prepare, O Bethlehem, for Eden has been opened to all!

The most ancient name for Christianity, Metropolitan Kallistos reminds us, is “the Way” (cf. Acts 19.23; 24.22), and it is precisely as the journey that this word implies that he presents the tradition of Orthodox Christianity, its teachings, and its practices. The result is not an abstract presentation of “Orthodoxy,” an outside look at, or description of, its dogmatics, rituals, and ascetic disciplines, compared to and contrasted with others, but an invitation to enter into the way, to begin the journey— and to do so always, into eternity—into the mystery of God through the living experience of the Orthodox Church.

In addition, this new edition is the first to incorporate a recently discovered Ethiopian manuscript, which in many cases has helped to clarify ambiguities in the text.

The seven works in this volume explore the great human mystery of death and the promise of eternal life. They present—along with On the Soul and the Resurrection (PPS 12)—a vision that is consistent, philosophically profound, and characteristic of Gregory’s wider theology. The first three works might be termed thematic essays; the fourth is a sermon celebrating Christ’s Resurrection; and the remaining three are funeral homilies given for prominent people in Constantinople.

For those who are seeking the truth, this book makes a compelling case for the choice of Orthodoxy.

Beside You stand a thousand thousands and a myriad myriads of angels, archangels, thrones, dominions, principalities, and powers. Beside You stand the two most-honored, six-winged seraphim. With two wings they cover the face, and with two the feet, and with two they fly, sanctifying. Sacraments of Healing MET. KALLISTOS WARE
••
From April 16 to 19, 1999, Metropolitan Kallistos (Ware) led a retreat for the Orthodox Peace Fellowship at the parish of St Étienne and St Germain in Vézelay, France; this slender book is a transcription of his six profound and moving talks. His Eminence treats of man as microcosm; the proper use of the passions; Christ as Physician (the true meaning of Confession and Anointing); peace and healing in the Divine Liturgy; healing in the parish, the local Church, and the world; and bodily death as an experience of healing.

Mediation and the Immediate God
Scriptures, the Church, and Knowing God

EDITH M. HUMPHREY
Mediation and the Immediate God pursues a long-debated question: How can we say both that God has a direct relationship with each Christian, and that He uses others in order to bring us to health and glory? Edith M. Humphrey explores the ubiquity of mediation in the Christian life, and in life in general, as well as the paradox of mediation alongside the Christian confidence that each of us can be directly “taught by

IONUŢ-ALEXANDRU TUDORIE, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
The Winter 2022 issue of the Quarterly opens with an exegetical study of the refence to “the sign of Jonah” in the Gospel of Matthew (L. Gore-Jones). There follow two articles on Gregory of Nyssa—one on his reading of the burning bush in Life of Moses (T. Buijkx), the second on the relationship between humanity’s creation “according to the Image” and St Gregory’s use of the imagery of food and hunger (A. Fogleman/Th. Breedlove). A study of Byzantine prayers to the Theotokos ascribed to St Ephrem (M. Constas) and an analysis of Origen’s pneumatology (M. Therrien) complete the patristic segment of this issue. A large article follows, comparing the insights of Sergius Bulgakov (and a number of other Orthodox theologians) and Yves Congar on the role of the Holy Spirit in the relationship between the Father and the Son (A. Vivier-Mureșan). The last article deals with the ambiguous Orthodox reception of the section on Baptism in the 1982 “Lima Declaration” on Baptism, Eucharist, and Ministry (H. Majkrzak). The “Theological Essay” section of this issue contains a short, moving, and

JOHN BEHR
This book reflects upon various dimensions and implications of the astounding fact that Christ shows us what it is to be God by the way he dies as a human being and, in so doing, simultaneously shows us what it is to be a human being. Connecting the end—“It is finished”—with the beginning—“Let us make a human being”—Fr John Behr challenges us to think again about who we are, as male and female, what we are called to become, and the relation between life and death in this journey. Presented in a poetic and meditative manner, adorned by images and offset quotations, this book inclines the reader toward a meditative reading, weighing, rather than skimming, each word and image.

Churchianity vs Christianity MET. ANTHONY BLOOM
Headings on Spiritual Knowledge:
•
The expression “churchianity” was coined by C. S. Lewis. It is a word that describes the parable of Christ—or rather, the event—in which the Lord Jesus Christ pronounced His condemnation on the barren fig tree. The words spoken by Christ are frightening: “There will never be a fruit on your branches until the end of the world.” In these nine talks, Metropolitan Anthony challenges us to move beyond mere “churchianity” to a true and living faith. He helps us to find our lofty calling in the familiar words of the Creed, and he points to a path forward, both for individual believers and for our communities.

Following Plato's literary example, St Gregory wrote a dramatic dialogue regarding the soul and the resurrection, in which he plays the role of “pupil,” while his elder sister, St Macrina, assumes the role of “teacher.” The lively dialogue addresses many thorny issues—the nature of the soul, the condition of the soul after death, and the transmigration of the soul—and concludes with a position corresponding to the writings of the Apostle Paul. St Gregory’s adherence to Scripture in the context of his philosophical milieu provides contemporary readers with a superb example of Christianity encountering culture. ISBN 978-0-88141-120-1

This valuable work brings together major themes in Greek patristic anthropology—the image of God in the human being, the fall from Paradise, and the human condition in the present life and in the age to come. The volume includes two discourses on the creation of humanity, a homily on the causes of evil, a famous homily meditating on our human identity and experience, and excerpts from St Basil’s fatherly instructions to his ascetic communities. There is also Letter 233 to Amphilochius of Iconium, St Basil’s spiritual son—a discussion of how the human mind functions, the activity for which God created it, and how it can be used for good, evil, or morally neutral purposes. This letter complements the Homily against Anger, also contained in this volume.

On the Unity of Christ ST CYRIL OF ALEXANDRIA JOHN ANTHONY MCGUCKIN, TRANS.
St Cyril is arguably the most important patristic theologian ever to deal with issues of Christology. The text here translated is one of his most important and approachable writings, composed in the aftermath of the Council of Ephesus (431) to explain his doctrine to an international audience. He argues for the single divine subjectivity of Christ and describes how it encompasses a full and authentic humanity in Jesus—a human experience that is not overwhelmed by the divine presence but fostered and enhanced by it. Christology then becomes a paradigm for the transfigured and redeemed life of the Christian.

The Spiritual Doctrine of St Gregory of Nyssa Ever since it first saw the light of day nearly eighty years ago, Jean Daniélou's Platonism and Mystical Theology has been deserving of an English translation. No one has labored as tirelessly as Daniélou to demonstrate that Gregory was a Christian theologian, not just a Platonic philosopher in disguise. Daniélou—insisting that in Gregory’s mystical theology, Platonic eros culminates in evangelical agapē—has rightly come to function as the baseline for all subsequent Nyssen scholarship. ARCHBISHOP DMITRI ROYSTER
The Cross Stands, While the World Turns: Homilies for the Cycles of the Year JOHN BEHR
The homilies collected here were delivered, and worked over, during the last decade at the Three Hierarchs’ Chapel of St Vladimir’s Seminary. These homilies follow the three main liturgical cycles of the year: the Paschal cycle, the Nativity–Theophany cycle, and the Theotokos cycle. Following these cycles has meant, inevitably, that some feasts (such as Transfiguration and the Elevation of the Precious and Life-giving Cross) are not touched, nor are those Sundays that belong to “ordinary time,” non-festal periods. Nevertheless, these cycles not only map out our year, but also our lives as we learn to grow in conformity to Christ.

This commentary is illuminating and instructive for anyone seeking to understand the Epistle to the Hebrews from the perspective of the Orthodox Church. Frequent mention is made of the specific placement of selected readings from the epistle in the Church’s liturgical and sacramental celebrations, and therefore this book is particularly useful for those responsible for preaching and teaching in the Church. Noteworthy here is the fact that readings from Hebrews are prescribed during the two most important times in the Orthodox liturgical year: the days prior to the celebration of the Nativity of Christ and the Great Fast before Pascha.

An Essay on Repentance Based on the Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete OLIVIER CLÉMENT
Every Lent the Orthodox Church prays the Great Canon of St Andrew of Crete. In this short but penetrating meditation, Olivier Clément draws out several of the canon’s important themes, allowing readers to enter more deeply into the mystery of repentance. The author begins the journey with a study of the meaning of “awakening” and “the fear of God”: the stepping stones toward true repentance. He then follows the Canon’s path of identifying our fallen nature, the passions, Christ’s liberation from sin and death, humility, and asceticism, and ends with a comparison between the shedding of tears and the holy chrism of Baptism. Clément ultimately encourages us to see repentance as the key to being fully alive—and The Great Canon as our roadmap toward becoming alive in Christ. A translation of the Great Canon accompanies the text.

He explains healing as a means of glorifying God, stressing again the crucial role of prayer and sacramental grace in promoting genuine health. When illness plunges us into unfamiliar territory, even to the point of death, Larchet teaches us to marshal spiritual reserves in a society dominated by technology and materialism.

As I was crying, I saw the icon of the all-holy Mother of God standing above the place where I stood. And I said to her, ‘Virgin, Mother of God, Lady, who gave birth to God the Word in the flesh, I know, indeed I know, that it is nether fitting or reasonable for someone so defiled, so utterly prodigal, to look at the icon of you, the Ever-Virgin ... But since it came about that God was born from you as a man for this reason that He might call sinners to repentance, help me, a lone woman who has no one to help her. Command that I, too, may be allowed entrance. ...’ As I said all this, I received the fire of faith as a kind of assurance and, emboldened by the compassion of the Mother of God, I moved myself from the place where I had been standing to make my prayer, and went again and mingled among those who were entering...”

The Book of Jonah
NIKO CHOCHELI
NIKO CHOCHELI
Images of Christ, cast as shadows in Old Testament texts, illuminate this book of biblical prophecy for young and old alike. Illustrator Niko Chocheli creates a stunning graphic dialog between the voice of the prophets and the coming Christ who eternally rests in their words. The Son of Man whom Daniel saw in night visions, the Branch of Jesse whom Isaiah saw shoot forth, and the apparitions of other prophets emerge as vivid icons of our Lord.
SVS Press is pleased to provide this illustrated version of the prophecy of Jonah especially for children. May it serve to open our minds and hearts to the gospel of Christ for which it is inspired to prefigure and signify.

Journalism and peace work have been major ingredients in author Jim Forest’s life. He is secretary of the Orthodox Peace Fellowship and editor of it journal and website, In Communion. He is a recipient of the Peacemaker Award from Notre Dame University’s Institute for International Peace Studies. He is a prolific writer of inspirational, historical, and biographical books. Jim makes his home in Alkmaar, Holland, near Amsterdam. St George and the Dragon is his second children’s book for St Vladimir’s Seminary Press (the first is Silent as a Stone).
Born in St Petersburg, Russia, Vladislav Andrejev received a formal education in fine art book illustration. His search for deeper meaning in art and life lead him to solitary travels in parts of the Russian wilderness, and to independent study of icon and fresco painting with a monk icon-writer. Mr Andrejev is an accomplished iconographer, teacher of iconography, and illustrator of award-winning books manifesting his unique style as a continuation of the ancient Byzantine-Russian tradition. He works in his private studio at his residence in upstate New York.
A retelling of the legend of Saint George for modern readers, illustrated in traditonal iconographic style. True stories become streamlined into legends and legends become compressed into myths. The Saint George of myth was a knight in armor who fought a dragon to save a princess— but the real George never saw a dragon nor did he rescue a princess. We are not even sure he had a horse or possessed a sword. A Christian convert born in the third century, George was one among many martyrs of the early Church. What made George a saint was the completely fearless manner in which he proclaimed his faith during a period of fierce persecution. In early icons, George was shown dressed as a soldier and holding the cross of martyrdom, but over time the legend of the dragon emerged. The story tells of a dragon so feared by the local people that they sacrificed their children to appease it. When it was the turn of the king's daughter, Elizabeth, to be sacrificed, Saint George appeared riding a white horse. He not only saved the princess and vanquished the dragon, but converted and baptised the whole town. From the point of view of history, the dragon story is apocryphal—yet what better way to symbolize the evil George confronted in this life than to portray it in the form of a firebreathing dragon? It is the courage God gives any Christian facing martyrdom or, for that matter, much smaller challenges. This beautifully illustrated book relates the oftentold story of Saint George and the dragon, with an afterword that looks at the real meaning of the legend.

Fr Lawrence Farley brings his exegetical skills to bear on the Song of Songs, one of the shortest but richest—and most difficult— books of the Bible. This balanced, verse-by-verse commentary examines the text on two main levels: both as a beautiful of the love and the bond image shared between man and woman in marriage, and as an icon of the “great mystery” toward human marriage points: which “Christ and the Church” (Eph 5.32). We live in swiftly changing times, when the value, the meaning, and the very definition of marriage are the subject of heated debate. Fr Lawrence offers us a vision of the biblical foundation for marriage, which can withstand the floods of life, “built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone” (Eph 2.20).

Sermons from the Life of St John Chrysostom ST JOHN CHRYSOSTOM DAVID FORD, TRANS.
These sermons are taken from critical points in the life of St John Chrysostom, revealing his adamant character and his lofty perspective in the often-tumultuous events of his life. Our father among the saints John Chrysostom (347–407), Archbishop of Constantinople, was a notable Christian bishop and preacher from the fourth and fifth centuries in Syria and Constantinople. He is famous for his eloquence in public speaking, his philanthropy, his denunciation of abuse of authority in the Church and in the Roman Empire of the time, and for a Divine Liturgy attributed to him.

An endorsement? thought of Florovsky, it is not inappropriate to add the theological achievements of Fr Matthew Baker to this precious lineage and inheritance of Orthodox
The past century witnessed the greatest persecution of Christians in all of history. But the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church, and great heroes of the faith emerged. One such hero is Fr Roman Braga. He suffered the unimaginable cruelty of Romanian Communist prisons, yet through this suffering he was purified and discovered the kingdom of heaven within himself (Lk 17.21). Saint Gregory Palamas’ Triads (GREEK & ENGLISH) ST GREGORY PALAMAS ALEXANDER TITUS, TRANS.
The Triads are St Gregory Palamas’ magnum opus in his dispute with Barlaam. This dogmatic tour de force is ultimately a defense of the traditional practice of prayer and stillness. For the first time a full English translation appears together with the Greek. Our father among the saints Gregory Palamas (1296–1359), Archbishop of Thessalonica, was a monk of Mount Athos in Greece (at Vatopedi Monastery and Esphigmenou Monastery), and later became Archbishop of Thessalonica. He was a preeminent theologian and a proponent of hesychastic theology.

Catechism
The name “Jesus,” given to the Infant at his birth, means “the Lord saves” in Hebrew. The Greek word “Christ” is used for Jesus many times in the New Testamen t and means “the Anointed One.” 11 It points to the priestly, prophetic and royal dignity of Jesus,25 to His special mission in relation to the people of Israel and to the whole human race. Supernatural signs accompanied the birth of Jesus Christ: the angels announc ed his birth to the shepherds (Lk 2.8–18) , and the Magi from the east, led by a mysterious star, came in order to worship him (Mt 2.1–12). On the eighth day after his birth, the infant Jesus was circumcised according to the Jewish law (Lk 2.21) , and on the fortieth day Mary and Joseph brought him to the Temple in Jerusale m to dedicate him to the Lord. There they were greeted by righteous elder the Symeon, who foretold that Jesus would become a “light to bring the glory of the people revelation to the gentiles” and of Israel

The miracles are the aspect of the ministry of Jesus Christ that drew the greatest attention from those around him during his life. Already at the very beginning of his preaching in Galilee “his fame went throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all sick people who were afflicted with various diseases and torments, and those who were demon-possessed, epileptics, and paralytics; and He healed them. Great multitudes followed Him—from Galilee, and from Decapolis, 46 Jerusalem, Judea, and beyond the Jordan” (Mt 4.24–25). In time his fame only grew, while some of the people whom he healed, including women, became a part of his group of disciples (Lk 8.2–3). The stories of the miracles performed by Jesus upon entering his public ministry comprise an important part of the Gospel narratives. In total, we find in the Gospels more than thirty complete stories of the miracles of Jesus (not including the short mentions of various supernatural events that accompanied his life and ministry). them there are numerous healings, the expulsion of demons from the possessed, raising three people from the dead, several events testifying to Jesus’ power over nature (walking on water, the calming of a storm, and cursing of the fig tree), and a number of other supernatural events (the transformation of water into wine, the feeding of the five thousand and the seven thousand with a small number of loaves, two miraculous catches of fish). As regards the total number of the miracles performed by Jesus, they cannot be subject to calculation: there may be hundreds if not thousands of healings. This is witnessed by the many places in the Gospels where it is evident that the miracles he performed and the expulsion 27 of demons bore a mass character .

Then John allowed Jesus to be baptized. And when Jesus emerged from the waters, “the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, ‘This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased’” (Mt 3.11–17; Mk 1.9–11; Lk 3.21–22). By this time Jesus was about thirty years old (Lk 3.23). After his baptism, he withdrew into the wilderness where he spent forty days without food and water. There he was tempted by the devil, but he vanquished all temptations and emerged victorious from this battle with the devil (Mt 4.1–11; Mk 1.12–13; Lk 4.1–13). Jesus began his preaching with the very same words that John the Baptist addressed to the people: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand” (Mt 3.2; 4.17). Very soon a group of disciples and followers gathered around Jesus, from whom he chose twelve to be apostles (Mk 3.14, Lk 6.13). Crowds of people followed him, attracted by his

An endorsement? thought of Florovsky, it is not inappropriate to add the theological achievements of Fr Matthew Baker to this precious lineage and inheritance of Orthodox
The spirit of the age contradicts all that Christ teaches, and many reject or leave the Church to satisfy their longing for the supernatural in esoteric traditions governed by the spirits of the underworld. The occult is now an unashamed feature of modern life, yet discussion of its danger often results in snorts of derision. Like many wounded by life and dissatisfied with the emptiness of modern existence, Magdalena Waters hungered for healing and thirsted for genuine spiritual experience. This propelled her into an intense spiritual search. Abandoning Christianity, she plunged into the depths of ancient, elemental witchcraft. In this raw and unflinching account, which reveals the pain that drives a person to seek release through magic and the suffering that results from worship of demons, Magdalena traces what it means to be healed and transformed by the love of Christ and the blessings available to those who accept His call to be reborn in the kingdom of God. Magdalena Waters is an Orthodox writer and artist who grapples with hard truths and important realities related to the unseen realm, demonic warfare, and the occult; abortion, gender dynamics, and feminism; and modernity, ancient praxis, and progressive ideology.

THEOLOGICAL QUARTERLY

This double issue of the Quarterly (SVTQ 67.1–2) opens with the 2023 Schmemann Lecture by Hans Boersma, “God as Embodied Christology and Participation in Saint Maximus the Confessor.” The first article assesses recent scholarship on the dating of the Gospel of Mark (Andrejevs). The second article examines the Pauline understanding of conversion to Christ and living in Christ in terms of “indwelling” and “unveiling” (Fanous), while the third explores meaning of the term “Saracene minded” as used by the Council of Hiereia (Rall) and the fourth considers a late-14th or early 15th-century Novgorodian manuscript’s evidence for Byzantine monastic night prayer at the end of the 9th century (Andreev). In the fifth article, Costache argues that Orthodox theology has the resources for a much-needed engagement with science that follows in the footsteps of Lossky, Stăniloae, and Nellas, as well as the Fathers. The last article is Grabau’s “A Historical-Phenomenological Experiences of Negative Theology in Christos Yannaras and the Corpus Areopagiticum.” David Heith-Stade’s theological essay provides an extended discussion of autocephaly and public law in various Orthodox contexts in the recent past. Among the book reviews, particularly noteworthy is Archimandrite Maximos Constas’ critical assessment of four recently published English translations of the Septuagint Psalter. The other reviews include: Nikolaos Loudovikos, Analogical Identities, 2019 (Bradshaw); Dario Chiapetti, The Father’s Eternal Freedom, 2022 (Coman); Rabee Toumi, Orthodox Christian Bioethics, 2020 (Vest); Natal’a Bonetskaia, “Tretii Zavet” ottsa Sergiia Bulgakova [“The Third Testament” of Father Sergius Bulgakov], 2023 (Slesinski); Cyprien Kern, L’Eucharistie, 2023 (Ladouceur).
