Pools and spas are a staple of many Australian homes. But before we can enjoy a splash in the pool, the men and women of the pool and spa industry have been working hard to ensure that our pools and spas are safe.
Building Surveyors and inspectors are critical to the pool and spa industry. In many cases, they’re the first to spot a potential issue, saving time and money down the track. It’s not an easy task. It is a wide-ranging job with many responsibilities, demands and pressures.
It is however, an extremely rewarding career that challenges you and presents a variety of career opportunities.
The key to ensuring the longevity of the industry is attracting new people to such an important profession – which is full of experienced surveyors and inspectors who are keen to share their skills with the next generation.
Attracting more women to the building and construction industry is something that will benefit everyone.
I’m pleased that the Victorian Government is investing in attracting more women to the industry through its Women Building Surveyor Program. The government has committed $6.3 million over two years to provide 40 women the opportunity to undertake training to become building surveyors within local government.
It will provide the opportunity for successful candidates from Victorian councils to begin an Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying or a Bachelor of Building Surveying.
It will support women to commence a new career or transition their career to commence the journey of becoming a fully qualified municipal building surveyor.
This a positive step in the right direction and one that will help bring more diversity to the industry and ensure we continue to attract building surveyors. Women bring new ideas and perspectives to the trades and I really encourage any woman who has ever considered being a building surveyor to jump on board.
Separate to the Women Building Surveyor Program, we’re encouraging anyone looking to make a change in 2021 to consider becoming a Building Inspector (Pool safety).
We’ve recently endorsed the first Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to deliver a VBA-approved course in swimming pool and spa barrier inspection.
Having a compliant pool and spa barrier can help save lives. Since 2000, more than 20 young children have fatally drowned in cases where the non-compliance of a safety barrier has been a factor.
To find out more about the Building Inspector (Pool Safety) registration process, call 1300 815 127 or email customerservice@ vba.vic.gov.au.
The Victorian Government is also introducing a new registration and licensing scheme for tradespeople.
The scheme aims to reduce non-compliant building work, enhance industry accountability and encourage skills formation, somthing the VBA is a strong supporter of.
