WELLNESS TRENDS MAKING WAVES IN 2026 O ur homes are no longer just places to live; they’ve become sanctuaries for health, relaxation, and selfcare. Around the pool and spa, wellness features are taking centre stage, offering ways to boost recovery,

reduce stress, and improve overall wellbeing. From cold plunges to mineral spa set-ups, here are the top wellness trends reshaping New Zealand backyards in 2026. COLD PLUNGE: THE POWER OF THE CHILL Cold water immersion has taken the wellness world by storm. Once the domain of elite athletes, cold plunges are now making their way into suburban backyards. Compact plunge pools or spa-style set-ups allow homeowners to experience the invigorating benefits of a daily dip. Research shows that cold plunging can reduce muscle soreness, improve circulation, and even boost mood. Many people also swear by the mental 48

POOL SPA LIFE

resilience that comes from stepping into icy water, a ritual that leaves you feeling energised and refreshed. With purpose-built cold plunge pools now widely available, this trend is here to stay. SAUNAS: HEAT THERAPY AT HOME On the other side of the temperature spectrum, saunas are enjoying a major revival. Infrared and traditional steam saunas are being installed alongside pools and spas, creating the ultimate athome wellness retreat.

Regular sauna use is linked to improved cardiovascular health, stress reduction, detoxification, and better sleep. Compact models make them suitable for smaller spaces, while luxury designs can be integrated into larger poolside pavilions. Pairing a sauna with a cold plunge offers the ultimate hot-and-cold therapy cycle, a practice favoured in Scandinavian cultures for centuries. SPA FITNESS: MORE THAN RELAXATION Today’s spas aren’t just for soaking; they’re also becoming fitness hubs. Swim spas and resistance jets allow for low-impact exercise, perfect for building strength, improving mobility, or supporting rehabilitation. For families, spas double as a fun environment for children to play while adults can still enjoy a workout or hydrotherapy session. This growing trend reflects a shift towards multifunctional spaces: your spa can be both a centre for relaxation and a platform for daily fitness. It’s a practical solution for smaller backyards, combining recreation and exercise in one compact footprint. WATER PROFILES: MINERAL-RICH WELLNESS Another exciting development in spa wellness is the rise of mineral water profiles. Instead of relying solely on traditional chlorine or bromine, many homeowners are turning to mineral-based systems such as magnesium, lithium, or potassium blends. These minerals don’t just sanitise the water, they enhance the bathing experience. Magnesium, for example, is renowned for easing muscle tension and promoting relaxation. Potassium and lithium systems are also said to support skin health and provide a softer, silkier feel in the water. With mineral spa set-ups, a soak becomes more than relaxation, it’s a therapeutic ritual. THE FUTURE OF WELLNESS AT HOME Wellness is no longer confined to day spas and gyms. In 2026, New Zealanders are bringing the best of these experiences into their own backyards. Whether it’s the invigorating shock of a cold plunge, the soothing heat of a sauna, a fitness session in the spa, or the calming properties of mineral water,

these trends prove that pools and spas are evolving into full wellness ecosystems. By embracing these innovations, you can transform your outdoor space into a personal health retreat; one that supports body, mind, and soul every single day. WHY

SMALL POOLS ARE BOOMING IN SUBURBIA N ot every New Zealand backyard has the space for a sprawling resort-style pool, but that doesn’t mean you need to miss out on luxury. Across the country, homeowners are embracing compact pool designs that prove small can still mean spectacular. From wellness benefits to clever design solutions, here’s why small pools are making such a splash in suburbia. SHRINKING BLOCK SIZES, SMARTER DESIGNS As city blocks get smaller and backyards shrink, New Zealanders are turning to creative pool solutions. Instead of giving up on their dream, families are choosing plunge pools, courtyard pools, and slimline lap pools that fit neatly into tighter spaces. These designs make the most of every square metre while still delivering plenty of lifestyle benefits. AFFORDABLE LUXURY FOR MODERN FAMILIES Small pools often come with smaller price tags. Plunge pools can start from around $30,00050

POOL SPA LIFE

$40,000, making them an attractive option for families looking for affordable luxury. Even custom concrete builds generally cost less than larger-scale pools. Plus, ongoing expenses like heating, cleaning and chemicals, are significantly lower thanks to reduced water volume. A HUB FOR HEALTH AND WELLNESS Compact pools are more than a place to cool off, they’ve become wellness hubs. Many homeowners use them for hydrotherapy, stress relief, light exercise and family connection.

Add spa jets or heating and your pool can double as a relaxation space all year round, turning even the smallest backyard into a private retreat. POOL STYLES THAT FIT ANYWHERE Plunge Pools: Deep enough to soak in but compact enough for courtyards, often with seating and spa jets. Lap Pools: Slimline designs that stretch along narrow blocks, perfect for fitness in tight spaces. Courtyard Pools: Ultra-compact pools that integrate with decks and alfresco zones, often as a statement feature. Tank Pools: Repurposed or purpose-built stock tanks that offer rustic charm and affordability. CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS TO SUIT EVERY YARD Fibreglass shells offer quick installation and easy upkeep, while concrete pools allow full customisation for awkward spaces or small blocks. Prefabricated systems are a growing option too; modules craned into place for speed and flexibility. And for a budget-friendly twist, stock tank pools are gaining popularity as stylish, modern-country solutions.

MAXIMISING SMALL SPACES The key to a successful small pool is clever positioning and multi-functional design. Placing a pool along a boundary wall or aligning it with your living area creates flow and makes the yard feel bigger. Built-in seating, adjoining decks or shallow beach zones ensure the pool doubles as both a play space and entertaining hub. Vertical elements, such as green walls or raised pools with glass panels, add drama without taking up extra ground space. LIFESTYLE ENHANCEMENTS THAT ADD VALUE A small pool doesn’t mean small enjoyment. With the right landscaping, furniture and lighting, your backyard can become an entertainer’s dream. Water features add a touch of luxury while also masking suburban noise. Heating options, like solar or heat pumps, extend use well beyond summer, and swim jets transform even plunge pools into spaces for serious exercise and hydrotherapy.

SAFETY FIRST: FENCING AND REGULATIONS New Zealand requires pool fencing for pools deeper than 30cm, following strict national standards. Frameless glass fencing is especially popular in smaller yards; it meets safety codes while keeping sightlines open and preventing a boxed-in feel. For budget builds, aluminium and steel remain solid options, and many homeowners are blending fences into their landscaping for a softer look. SMALL POOLS, BIG IMPACT The suburban small pool is no longer just a compromise; it’s a design statement. Compact, stylish and multi-functional, these pools deliver luxury and lifestyle without requiring sprawling land or extravagant budgets. With thoughtful planning and creative design, even the smallest backyard can be transformed into a personal oasis. In 2026, the small pool isn’t just a trend, it’s the future of suburban outdoor living, designed and delivered by SPASA members. Photo submitted by Prestige Plunge Pools

FINISHING TOUCHES TO TRANSFORM YOUR BACKYARD A pool is often the centrepiece of an outdoor space, but the details surrounding it are what truly create a backyard you’ll never want to leave. From the right paving underfoot to the sound of water features,

finishing touches bring style, safety and personality to your pool zone. Here are some of the most impactful ways to complete your backyard oasis in 2026. 54

POOL SPA LIFE

finish. Enter hidden skimmers; sleek covers that blend perfectly with paving or decking. Available in stone, tile or even timber-look finishes, these covers provide a streamlined appearance while keeping your pool operating smoothly. It’s a small change that makes a big difference, especially in luxury or modern backyard designs where every detail counts. DECKING THAT DEFINES SPACES Decking adds warmth and character to a pool area, offering a soft contrast to stone or concrete surrounds. Timber decking remains a favourite, but composite materials are rising in popularity for their low maintenance and weather resistance. In 2026, mixed-material looks are trending, think timber-style decking combined with stone edging or integrated with built-in seating. Clever decking design can also define different zones in your backyard, turning one space into multiple areas for swimming, lounging, and entertaining. FENCING: STYLE MEETS SAFETY Pool fencing isn’t just a legal requirement; it’s an opportunity to add elegance to your design. Frameless glass remains the popular choice for smaller or design-focused backyards, offering safety without obstructing views. Photo submitted by Fidas Pool Fencing

STYLISH TILES AND PAVERS Choosing the right surface sets the tone for your pool area. Natural stone remains a classic choice, with travertine, granite, and sandstone offering both durability and timeless appeal. Porcelain pavers are also on trend this year, thanks to their sleek look, slip resistance and low maintenance needs. Colour is key - lighter tones reflect heat and keep surfaces cool underfoot, while deeper shades can create a dramatic, resort-style vibe. Large-format pavers with minimal grout lines are particularly popular, creating a seamless flow between pool, entertaining, and garden zones. HIDDEN SKIMMERS FOR A SEAMLESS LOOK Skimmers are an essential part of pool function, but visible plastic lids can interrupt a carefully designed

In recent years, we are seeing a rise of pick fencing, which is a stylish take on the “traditional” steel fences, with added curves and varied heights (meeting New Zealand Standards), which continues to be a favourite and of course there is the budgetfriendly choice, with new powder-coated finishes allowing for a softer, more modern palette. New Zealand pool fencing must meet strict standards, including a minimum 1.2m height, selfclosing gates, and no climbable objects within 120cm of the fence. Choosing a SPASA member to install fencing ensures your pool not only looks fantastic but also complies with the latest safety standards. WATER FEATURES THAT WOW Water features are one of the fastest ways to elevate a pool’s ambience. While blade waterfalls once dominated, today’s homeowners are opting for more organic designs. POOL SPA LIFE

55

Natural stone spillways, tiered rock formations and integrated wall scuppers are all on trend, creating soothing sounds and a resort-like feel. Bubblers and jets at shallow pool entries are another favourite, playful for families but sophisticated enough for adults-only entertaining. Pairing water features with clever lighting ensures your pool looks just as stunning at night as it does during the day. BRINGING IT ALL TOGETHER The magic of finishing touches lies in how they work together. Cool, modern pavers paired with a hidden skimmer system create a seamless look. Decking with integrated seating makes the pool zone multifunctional. Elegant fencing adds safety while maintaining flow. And the gentle trickle of a natural-style water feature transforms your backyard into a sanctuary. By investing in these details, you’ll elevate your pool from functional to unforgettable, creating an outdoor space that’s as stylish as it is enjoyable. With a SPASA member by your side, you’ll also have the confidence that every choice is backed by professional advice and care.

TOP 5 TIPS

FOR KEEPING YOUR POOL TIP TOP OVER THE COOLER MONTHS A s the memories of the hours spent enjoying your pool last summer slip away and the winter season approaches, it’s important to make sure you continue to look after your pool and help to ensure it’s in tip top condition for next summer. As we come into the colder months it might seem like a “quiet” season for your pool - but it’s definitely not the time to hit pause completely. We asked SPASA member Donna Richmond from Auckland Inground Pools for some tips on how to give your pool a little love in colder months so that there are fewer surprises when you are ready to start swimming again. “We often see small maintenance oversights in winter become big repair jobs come summer. Here are a few key things every pool owner should be doing in the “off-season,” shares Donna. 62

POOL SPA LIFE

1.

TEST YOUR WATER - EVEN WHEN YOU’RE NOT SWIMMING Just because you’re not in the pool doesn’t mean chemistry isn’t doing its thing. We recommend water testing fortnightly through winter, especially after heavy rain. Why it matters: Leaving your water unbalanced can cause damage to your pool surface. Trust us, it’s a lot cheaper to add chemicals on a fortnightly basis than reduce the longevity of your pool surface or equipment.

2.

BRUSH, CIRCULATE, REPEAT Algae loves a quiet pool. And concrete surfaces - especially those that are slightly rough or porous - can be prime real estate for the green stuff. Donna suggests: • Brushing the walls, floor and steps at least every fortnight. • Running your filtration system 4–6 hours a day. • Don’t let your pump take a full winter holiday it’s doing more than you think.

3.

Photo submitted by Auckland Inground Pools

WATCH YOUR CALCIUM LEVELS Cooler water temperatures in winter can disrupt your pools water balance especially the calcium hardness, which plays a critical role in protecting your concrete pool surface. If the water becomes too soft in concrete pools (i.e. low in calcium hardness), it tries to restore balance by drawing calcium from the concrete surface. This could lead to: • Itching (a rough, worn-down surface) • Pitting (tiny divots or depressions) • And over time, hairline cracking But there’s another issue many pool owners overlook - that is, Calcium Nodules. These are small, hard, often white deposits that look like tiny blisters or lumps on the pool surface. They form when calcium hydroxide seeps out from within the concrete shell (usually through a microcrack or weak spot), then reacts with carbon dioxide in the water to form calcium carbonate, essentially “pimples” of scale.

POOL SPA LIFE

63

While not dangerous, they can become widespread and ugly if left untreated, and they’re much harder to remove once they build up.

4.

TO COVER OR NOT TO COVER A pool cover isn’t essential over winter, especially as the heat pump is likely to be turned off and retaining heat is no longer front of mind. However, it will help minimise debris that gets into the pool.

Photo submitted by Auckland Inground Pools

64

POOL SPA LIFE

Also remember that heavy rainfall can dilute your chemicals or introduce contaminants. So don’t assume the pool cover means you’re off the hook. In fact, letting your pool ‘breathe’ over the cooler months is not a silly idea. If you have a robotic cleaner to assist with picking up the leaf fall, that takes a fair bit of the work away from you.

5.

WHEN TO CALL IN THE PROS If life’s a bit hectic, you don’t have time to learn to become an expert in water chemistry or you simply want peace of mind, choosing a SPASA member, pool service technician, is a great choice. They can handle the testing, brushing, seasonal transitions, and any surface issues so your pool is always swim-ready - without the stress. The need for regular pool and spa maintenance cannot be avoided. Putting off the cleaning until next weekend can often be a costly mistake. Let’s keep those pools looking sharp - no matter the season. When you hire a SPASA (Swimming Pool and Spa Association) member, you’re choosing a professional who represents the highest standards in the industry. SPASA technicians are fully insured,

trained to national standards, and committed to delivering safe, reliable, and ethical service. Every member follows a strict Code of Ethics, so you can be confident you’re dealing with someone who values quality, integrity, and customer care. Choosing a SPASA member pool technician isn’t just about convenience - it’s about trust. It’s knowing your water is perfectly balanced, your equipment is protected, and your family can swim safely all year round. It’s about the peace of mind that comes from having an expert on your side who understands your pool, your lifestyle, and the New Zealand climate. SUSTAINABLE CHOICES WITH CLIMATE CARE CERTIFIED SAVE WATER, CHEMICALS, ENERGY, AND MONEY!

O wning a pool or spa is one of life’s greatest luxuries, but it doesn’t need to come at the expense of the environment or your wallet. Choosing SPASA Climate Care Certified (CCC) products and practices, means

you can enjoy crystal-clear water and a sparkling backyard feature while saving water, reducing chemical use, cutting energy costs, and protecting our planet. Here’s how a Climate Care Certified approach can make your pool or spa smarter, greener, and more affordable. SMARTER WATER MANAGEMENT Water conservation is one of the biggest concerns for pool owners. Traditional pools can lose thousands of litres each year through evaporation, splash-out, and inefficient systems. CCC-approved covers, filters, and circulation equipment are designed to minimise wastage and keep water exactly where it belongs, in your pool.

66

POOL SPA LIFE

Simple upgrades like a Climate Care Certified pool cover can reduce evaporation by up to 95%, saving water, energy for heating and keeping the water quality balanced for longer. That means less stress on our water supply and lower bills for you. ENERGY EFFICIENCY THAT PAYS OFF Heating, pumping, and filtering account for a large portion of a pool’s running costs.

Photo submitted by Rainwise Pools Melbourne

Photo submitted by Prestige Plunge Pools

Climate Care Certified equipment is designed to operate with maximum efficiency, so you get the most out of every kilowatt.

Think of it as an investment: every litre of water saved, every chemical avoided, and every kilowatt conserved puts money back in your pocket.

Variable-speed pumps, solar heating options, and energy-efficient LED lighting are all part of the CCC program. Together, they can cut your energy consumption dramatically, which means smaller bills and a lighter carbon footprint.

WHAT DOES “CLIMATE CARE CERTIFIED” MEAN? Climate Care Certification is the pool and spa industry’s tick of approval for sustainable pool and spa products, systems and installations. When you see the CCC logo, you know the product has been independently assessed for its environmental benefits.

LONG-TERM MONEY SAVINGS While sustainable technology often sounds expensive, CCC solutions are designed with longterm affordability in mind. Many upgrades quickly pay for themselves by lowering water, chemical, and electricity bills. Over the lifespan of your pool, the savings can be substantial.

Whether you’re building a new pool, upgrading equipment, or simply looking for smarter ways to maintain your pool or spa, choosing CCC products ensures you’re doing the right thing for your lifestyle, your budget and the planet.

THE

A TO Z OF PURCHASING A

SWIMMING POOL OR SPA A swimming pool or spa is more than just a luxury; it’s a lifestyle investment that adds value to your home, encourages healthy living, and brings together family and friends for years of enjoyment. Whether you’re dreaming of tranquil relaxation or lively backyard gatherings, thoughtful planning will help you work with your pool or spa builder and ensure your project is a success. This A to Z guide outlines key considerations at each stage of your pool or spa planning process so you can make confident, informed decisions.

A

APPROVALS Before breaking ground, consult your local council and state planning & building rules. Depending on where the pool is located, you should allow at least 3-4 months planning permits and building approvals to be obtained.

workmanship. Ask for references, quotes, past project photos and warranty details. SPASA builders also offer construction contracts that meet state consumer laws that protect your rights and clearly outline expectations for you as the customer and the builder.

C

Check zoning laws, water authority restrictions, and bushfire/flood overlays on your block to determine where the pool or spa can be located. Verify compliance with pool safety barrier rules. Consider working with a SPASA pool builder member who can handle your approvals and help to walk you through the process.

CONSIDERATIONS Assess your site conditions thoroughly before design. Evaluate accessibility for machinery, slope of the block, proximity to trees, stormwater drains, easements, and underground utilities. This early-stage planning prevents delays and cost overruns. A site survey or engineer’s report may be required.

BUILDER Choose a pool builder who is a member of SPASA. This supports adherence to industry best practices, consumer protections through the SPASA contract, and quality

DESIGN Design with both form and function in mind. Consider who will use the pool (kids, athletes, entertainers), how often, and what for. Will you need a shallow area, bench

seating, a spa, or water features? Match the shape and style to your landscape and architecture. You can use 3D software or pool design tools to help you visualise the space.

E

EQUIPMENT Pools and spas have a range of equipment connected to run things like pumps, filters, chlorinators, heaters, and lighting. Think ahead about what you would like for each of these options. Consider energyefficient, automated systems that reduce running costs and make maintenance easier. Consider smart technology like Wi-Fi controllers and robotic cleaners. Ask your builder for a breakdown of included equipment and optional upgrades. Speak to your local pool shop to see what equipment they supply, service and recommend.

F

FENCING Pool fencing is not just a legal requirement; it’s a lifesaving one. Choose fencing that meets Australian or New Zealand pool barrier standards while also enhancing your outdoor design. Frameless glass is modern and unobtrusive; aluminium offers durability and affordability. Pool barriers connecting with the existing fence and home are important area to understand to ensure full compliance with the standards.

G

GROUNDWORK Proper site preparation ensures structural integrity. This includes excavation, soil testing, and engineering recommendations. During preparation, things like rocks, roots, and debris should be removed. Under the pool also needs to ensure adequate drainage is provided to prevent water from pooling beneath or around your pool shell. During excavation and installation, it is critical to follow all builder or engineer recommendations to avoid future subsidence or movement.

H

HARDSCAPING Surround your pool with beautiful, functional surfaces. This includes paving, coping, and decorative or functional retaining walls. Use slip-resistant materials near wet areas. Plan for shaded zones, outdoor kitchens or

fire pits, if desired. Take time to coordinate with your pool builder and/or landscaper to create a cohesive outdoor space.

I

INSURANCE Ensure you or your builder has both construction and ongoing home coverage insurance for the pool. Your builder should provide Home Warranty Insurance, required by law across most of New Zealand, prior to the building approval being granted. You should also notify your home insurer once construction is complete, so your policy reflects the increased value and potential liability associated with a pool.

J

JUSTIFICATION Choose a pool that aligns with your budget, space, and lifestyle. Fibreglass and plunge pools offer fast, cost-effective solutions. Concrete pools are fully customisable but can be more expensive to construct. Consider the total cost of ownership, including maintenance, energy use, and long-term value to your home.

K

KIT POOLS DIY and kit pools offer affordability and fast installation but require a higher degree of owner involvement. As an owner-builder, you’re responsible for permits, site prep, and installation. Ensure you’re confident in the technical requirements or SPASA recommends you hire licensed and insured professionals to assist in installation.

L

LEGALITIES Review your pool contract thoroughly. It should clearly list scope of work, project timeline, payment schedule, progress stages, and warranties. Never proceed without signing a contract. Understand cooling-off periods and dispute resolution mechanisms. SPASA contracts are strongly recommended and they address the specifics of pool building and meet consumer laws across New Zealand.

M

MAINTENANCE Plan your long-term care and maintenance. Schedule regular cleaning, water testing, and equipment servicing using a maintenance routine or hire a 72

POOL SPA LIFE

SPASA Pool Service Technician to keep track of this for you. Consider automatic systems such as robotic cleaners, in-floor systems, or smart filtration. Check your building contract to identify what obligations you have as the owner to maintain the pool including water quality testing, to protect your pool’s warranties.

N

NAVIGATE Learn the language of pools. Terms like chlorinator, skimmer box, return jets, backwashing, and hydrostatic valve will come up frequently. Understanding the basics will empower you to make informed decisions and communicate effectively with pool professionals during construction and maintenance.

O

OPERATING TIPS Once your pool is up and running, follow the manufacturer’s operating guidelines closely. Maintain correct water levels, avoid rapid draining, and schedule filter and pump maintenance. Record warranty service dates. Ask your builder for a handover manual and demonstration.

P • • • • • •

Concrete: Fully customisable, long-lasting, but generally has a higher upfront construction cost. Fibreglass: Quicker to install, smooth surface, moderate price. Installation will involve a crane. Vinyl Liner: Affordable but less durable, come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Plunge Pools: Great for small spaces. Generally concrete or fibreglass structures. Swim Spas: Heated, compact, versatile. Installation may involve a crane. Above-ground: Budget-friendly, fast setup.

POOL TYPES Each type of pool offers similar but different benefits:

QUALITY STANDARDS Insist on products that meet or exceed Australian or New Zealand Standards.

Ask for certification documents from manufacturers for the various pool equipment you select. Choose trusted brands with long-term warranties and a proven track record for service and support.

POOL SPA LIFE

73

R

RUNNING COSTS Anticipate power, water, and chemical expenses. Invest in solar heating, variable-speed pumps, and pool covers to reduce daily costs. Automated chlorinators and dosing systems help maintain water quality with minimal effort.

S

SUSTAINABILITY Consider eco-smart choices: solar heating, LED lighting, energy-efficient pumps, rainwater top-up systems, and low-chemical sanitisation methods. Sustainable design choices can save you money and reduce the environmental impact of the pool over its lifespan. SPASA’s Climate Care Certified program is a great place to start to find products that suit your needs.

T • • •

TIMELINE Know what to expect about how long it may take to install your pool:

Concrete: Approx. 4 months due to excavation, steelwork, curing. Fibreglass: Approx. 3 weeks from excavation to fill. Plunge/above-ground: Approx. 2–3 days postapproval.

Photo submitted by AEON Pools

Timelines vary with weather, builder availability, and site challenges. Ask for a project schedule and milestones.

U

UPGRADES There are many upgrades you can choose as optional features for your pool. Think about sufficient LED lights, swim jets, waterfalls, automation systems, pool blankets, and mineral sanitisation. Clarify with your builder what’s included in the package versus what may be extra if you add this to your package. Consider prioritising upgrades that enhance usability and reduce ongoing maintenance.

V

VALUE ADD Pools can increase your home’s market value when properly maintained and certified. Ensure a final compliance inspection is done by council or your building certifier, and that you receive certificates for electrical, fencing and structural safety.
