WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN
BUILDING A POOL
Building a pool takes more than digging and filling a hole with water. Here’s what you can expect on the journey to backyard bliss.
D
esigning and building a new swimming pool takes time. From the moment you decide to invest in the health and happiness a pool delivers, you’ll be faced with facts, figures and plenty of questions. To keep the process smooth, it helps to understand the various project phases and time required for each.
SOME CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU BEGIN You’ll need to do a bit of groundwork before you schedule an initial consultation with a builder. Think about the following so you are ready when the questions start: How much of your backyard do you want to utilise? What is your vision for the rest of the landscaping? Do you have house plans and do they show the elevation of your block? Do you have sewer or stormwater drains running under the property? Is there enough access for a machine – you’ll need a minimum of 2 metres – and will you need any consent for access from your neighbours? The material you choose to construct your pool will influence installation timelines, so just be aware that this may vary by weeks or months depending on your choice and the size and scale of the project.
STAGE ONE - INITIAL CONSULTATION Once you've decided to take the plunge, your first interaction with the pool and spa industry is seeking an initial consultation. This will probably take a couple of weeks and may involve a pool supplier, builder, contractor, designer, architect and/or engineer. You can expect the following things to take place: 1. An initial site visit – where the contractor or builder will conduct an inspection and discuss your requirements in detail. 2. Design consultation – depending on your requirements and any complexities that influence the overall design and construction process, you may engage an architect, engineer or other design professional. 3. Provision of a written quotation – including particulars on contract terms and applicable warranties. 4. Contract finalisation and signing will include your pool’s physical design details (shape, size, water depth, interior finish, filtration and access). It will outline the progress payments schedule, including payment due dates, what each payment covers specifically and what will happen in the event of unforeseen circumstances or delays. It should also outline warranty terms on the pool and equipment.

8
POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
STAGE TWO - COUNCIL APPROVALS This stage can be lengthy, taking anywhere from just a few weeks to a couple of months, depending on the approval process in your state or territory. Things may move a little slower than you would like, but getting approval is required to ensure your pool is built to plan. Check with your local council if you are unsure about what is involved. Approval ensures that your pool meets all the applicable legal requirements, including local structural and safety obligations and state-mandated conditions. You’ll need to check with your water provider to see if any water restrictions are in place before filling your pool and you will also need permission from the local water authority before filling up using mains water.
STAGE THREE - INSTALLATION OR CONSTRUCTION Installation or construction is the largest variable in a new pool project. A prefabricated plunge or aboveground pool can take as little as two or three days, but you'll be looking at close to eight weeks for a concrete build. Fibreglass and composite/vinyl-lined pools will generally take three to four weeks to finish. Processes include: Excavation and earthworks Construction (in the case of concrete or composite/vinyl-lined pools) or shell installation (in the case of fibreglass pools) Tiling Laying the coping Safety barrier installation Filling the pool and balancing the water Depending on your location, there may also be a requirement for staged inspections by the council or a private certifier throughout the process. Ask your contractor to explain this process in more detail.
POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
9
CHOOSING YOUR POOL AND SPA
STAGE FOUR - HANDOVER Handover should include provision of a checklist and a comprehensive run-down on how to maintain and protect your new investment. Make sure your builder or contractor covers off the following: Provision of a certificate of completion or similar Explanation of statutory and manufacturer warranties Provision of equipment and accessories information, including instruction or operations manuals Explanation of pool safety instructions Start-up and running procedure instruction Maintenance schedule steps and recommendations Referral to a qualified SPASA service technician for ongoing maintenance and advice Once the handover is complete, it’s time to grab friends and family, dive on in and enjoy all the benefits of pool ownership! We’ve provided this information on average installation and construction time frames as a general guide. Every pool is different, so your installation may take more – or less – time, based on specific project variables. The average times provided do not account for extraordinary circumstances or events, like access difficulties or material choices that may delay construction. These times also exclude additional after-thefact processes like paving or landscaping. Your contractor can provide a more detailed and accurate plan based on project specifics.

WHAT’S
COOKING?
I
t’s hard to ignore the beauty of a well-designed outdoor kitchen and its sheer convenience. Opting for a second cooking space keeps the crowds – and the mess – out of the house and gives you more time to enjoy with family and friends.
HIT THE RIGHT SPOT In any building project, location is the first consideration. If you’re retrofitting, you’ll probably have limited options, but it’s best to aim as close to your existing kitchen as you can get. Why put both cooking spaces within a stone’s throw of each other? Closer proximity means you can connect to existing services more easily – a less expensive alternative than running additional plumbing, power and gas lines. You'll probably want the area to be under cover so it’s protected from the elements. But you’ll also need to factor in ventilation and how close you are to other living areas – you don’t want smoke from the barbeque impacting other parts of the house.
WHO, WHAT AND HOW OFTEN? Think about who will be using the space, for what and how often. Are you planning on only cooking the occasional mid-week family meal, or are you more likely to host regular lunches for twenty with a pig on a spit and all the trimmings? Thinking about casual pizza nights with the neighbours or doubling down to learn the ins-and-outs of Texas BBQ every weekend? Outdoor kitchens can run from simple to sophisticated – how you want to use the space will help determine the equipment you need and also guide the budget.
LAND ON A LAYOUT Once you have decided how you want to use the space, you can start to formulate designs and based around equipment. Kitchen spaces fall in to one of four key zones: storage, preparation, cooking and serving. Within those zones, there are additional sub-areas and specific placement considerations.

14
POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
STORAGE Storage includes cupboards, cabinets and cold areas – the all-important fridge. Give yourself enough room to store all the essentials; crockery and cutlery, tablecloths, napkins, pantry items like salt and pepper, sauces, oils and marinades, as well as cooking and preparation tools, cleaning supplies and other items like a first aid kit. Make sure storage and cabinets are protected from the elements to avoid things like mould and mustiness from damp. PREPARATION Clear benchtops for food prep are a must. You’ll be dealing with meat, seafood and vegetables – chopping, slicing, dicing, marinating meats, assembling kebabs, shelling prawns and slathering pizza dough with sauces and toppings – so you’ll want plenty of room to work comfortably. All that food prep will be pretty inviting for creepy crawlies, so you may end up with some unwanted guests. Keeping prep areas clean will help minimise bugs and other insects but think about installing repellent devices like zappers. Natural options like citronella candles or oils will help keep the mozzies at bay. To keep things clean, you’ll need a sink (with hot and cold running water) that’s also big enough to take larger items like grills from the barbeque for easy washing. Don’t forget space for a bin that won’t be in your way or under your feet. COOKING Your cooking zone incorporates all the equipment you’ll need to feed your family and guests – whether that is a barbeque, smoker, stove top, pizza oven or all of the above. You’ll need to know the exact dimensions of all cooking equipment and appliances to properly plan the design. In addition, the cooking zone needs to be heatproof and well-ventilated and must have access to required services, including power, water and gas. Many modular outdoor kitchen options are available that incorporate benchtops, storage, cooking, fridge, and sink into a single linear design, taking the guesswork out and simplifying the design process. SERVING Make sure there’s enough room for a good-sized table and comfortable chairs in a pleasant setting so everyone can relax and enjoy their meal out of the sun (or rain) and away from any barbeque smoke. Comfort should always be the focus of any living space, outdoors or otherwise! POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU

OTHER ESSENTIALS As with any kitchen, you’ll need durable, non-slip flooring. Being outdoors, it must also withstand some weather and be suitable for high traffic. Pavers, concrete and bricks are all outstanding exterior options. Never underestimate the importance of lighting – in an outdoor environment or anywhere else. Poorly lit spaces make hard work of everything, so take the time to plan lighting and consult an electrician for advice on the type of outdoor fittings you should look for and where to place them. If you really want to get your money’s worth, consider installing heating or cooling options that would make the space a viable, entertaining area year-round. There are many energy-efficient options that won't hurt the budget or the planet. Including extras like comfy seating and a big screen TV will have you watching the footy grand final with your mates over ice-cold beers and homemade pizzas before you know it.
RELAX AND ENJOY! A well-designed outdoor kitchen can be the jewel in the crown of your entertainment area, providing extra living space and easily adding value to your home. It can also be as simple or extravagant as your tastes – and budget – allow. Whether you decide to go DIY or opt for a full custom design and installation, make sure that you engage professional licensed tradespeople for all building, electrical and plumbing works. We hope these tips will help create a unique outdoor entertaining space for you, your friends and family to enjoy. We love to see beautiful design ideas and spaces brought to life, so be sure to tag @poolspalife and share with us.

WAYS TO GET VALUE OUT OF
YOUR POOL O wning a pool is an investment, requiring both time and money to maintain, while also adding significant value to your home. As cost-of-living pressures hit home and households feel the pinch, we’ve come up with ten ways to save – small changes that soon add up to big savings.
1 USE A POOL COVER
2 CLEAN & MAINTAIN REGULARLY
A quality pool cover reduces evaporation, maintains water temperature and keeps pesky debris at bay. The money you'll save on water, heating and cleaning is worth the initial outlay. Choose from a range of options like solar, mesh or solid covers that will suit your needs and budget or higher-spec options like automatic covers that provide additional convenience and safety features. Whichever cover you choose, ensure it fits snugly and is easy to use, maximising efficiency — and your savings.
Regular pool maintenance not only keeps your pool sparkling, but also helps prevent costly repairs down the track. Routinely skim the water surface, brush the walls and vacuum the floor to remove debris. Check filters and pool equipment for wear and tear, and backwash the filter as needed. Staying on top of maintenance tasks will also help extend the life of your equipment, saving even more. If DIY isn't your thing, consider hiring a professional – you’ll find a list of award-winning service technicians and pool businesses in this issue of Choosing Your Pool & Spa.
3 ADJUST THE OPERATING SCHEDULE A little schedule tweak can do wonders for your wallet. Run your pool pump and filter during offpeak hours to take advantage of lower energy rates. Evaluate your pump's operating time – if your pool stays clean with less filtering time, adjust it accordingly and maintain proper water circulation for optimal cost-efficiency. Keep an eye on your local utility's time-of-use rates, as these can change seasonally. Fine-tuning your pool’s operating schedule will help optimise savings.

4 ENERGY-EFFICIENT EQUIPMENT
5 CHEMISTRY MONITORING AND MANAGEMENT
Go green with energy-efficient pool equipment. Consider upgrading to a more efficient pump and filter system to reduce energy consumption and operational costs. Why not harness the power of the sun with a solar pool heater, extending the swim season without additional outlay. Think about other outdoor items too, like LED pool lights that use less energy and last longer than traditional bulbs. Energy-efficient equipment can have higher upfront costs, but the energy savings will more than make up for it, while also being kinder to the planet.
Maintaining proper water balance prevents damage to pool surfaces and equipment, saving you money in the long run. Invest in a reliable test kit or test strips to monitor pH, alkalinity and sanitiser levels. Choose cost-effective chemicals and always follow manufacturer guidelines to avoid overuse. Regularly testing and adjusting the water chemistry will keep your pool sparkling clean.
6 OPTIMISE WATER CIRCULATION
7 INSTALL A TIMER OR AUTOMATION SYSTEM
Effective water circulation is key to swimming pool efficiency and energy savings. Make sure return jets are positioned correctly to create optimal flow and consider using a pool circulation system to enhance water movement and reduce dead spots. Maintain a clean filter, skimmer and pump basket to improve circulation. These simple adjustments can make a big difference to your pool’s overall health while also reducing running costs.
Pool timers and automation systems are gamechangers when it comes to convenience and energy savings. Automating the pump, filter and heater lets you optimise running times to reduce energy consumption, making it easier to maintain and less expensive to operate. There are plenty of systems on the market, designed to suit every application and budget. Speak to a SPASA member to find out which option will work best for you.

8 CONSIDER A VARIABLE SPEED POOL PUMP
9 SOLAR POWERED HEATING
Traditional pool pumps can be energy hungry, so this is an area well worth investigating when seeking cost savings. Variable speed pumps offer reduced energy use, a longer lifespan and quieter operation than single speed types. The higher initial outlay is compensated through lower energy usage and subsequent savings. Before purchasing, do your research and compare the energy efficiency ratings of various models to find the best option for your pool and budget.
Harness the power of the sun with eco-friendly solar pool heating. These systems use solar collectors to absorb the sun's energy and transfer it to your pool water. Depending on your location and climate, a solar heater can effectively extend your swimming season without breaking the bank. Explore the types of systems available, including solar panels and solar mats, and weigh up costs against the potential for savings. Don't forget to check for government incentives or rebates to further reduce your investment.
10 SHOP AROUND FOR SUPPLIES AND SERVICES Save money on pool supplies and services by shopping around and comparing prices. Look out for sales, discounts and bulk purchase deals from local pool stores or online retailers. Don't be afraid to negotiate with service providers for better rates on maintenance, repairs or installations. Consider joining pool owner forums and subscribing to industry magazines so you can stay up to date on the latest deals, share tips and learn about cost-effective pool care practices. By being proactive and resourceful, you can cut costs on pool essentials and ensure you're getting the best value.

POOL COVERS REDUCE HEAT LOSS WITH A POOL COVER BLANKET!
L
eaves, twigs and dirt in your pool water? Battling heat loss and evaporation? Spending more money on pool cleaners, chemicals and top ups? Pool blankets and covers solve a multitude of problems. A sound investment, they deliver immediate results and provide long term value.
LESS DEBRIS
A cover keeps out about 80 to 90% of the leaves and other debris that could end up in your pool, so you’re already ahead of the game. Reducing contaminants puts less load on your cleaner, skimmer, filter and pumps, saving you in the long run. Most robotic cleaners will still operate with a cover in place.
REDUCE EVAPORATION
When the sun goes down and the air temperature drops below the water temperature, it leads to water cooling, evaporation and heat loss. Using a cover, you’ll lose less water and lessen chemical use. Direct sunlight also contributes to the break-down of chlorine, so using a cover will save you in sanitising costs as well.
STOP HEAT LOSS
Most of the heat loss in a swimming pool happens at the water’s surface. You can save a bundle by using a pool cover, especially if you’ve got a heating system. Keeping the water warm means enjoying your pool for longer each year. There are plenty of pool cover choices available to suit every budget including automatic, manual, solar, safety and thermal options. Make sure your choice fits snugly, as gaps around the edges can reduce the overall efficiency. For more info, check out the Climate Care Certified website (www.climatecarecertified.com) and search pool covers.

PETS IN POOLS!
W
e all love a swim on a hot day – dogs included. But should pools be for humans only, or is a paddle okay for your pooch as well?
EVERY DOG IS DIFFERENT Swimming is a great low impact whole-body exercise for dogs, provided they are comfortable in and around water. Some are just not suited to swimming – whether by breed or personality. Don’t force your dog to swim and never throw him in without warning. If you introduce him to the pool, do it calmly and gradually, ensuring he’s handled safely and feels supported. Some breeds have features that make swimming hard. Short legged pups may struggle to manoeuvre through water and have trouble getting in and out. ‘Squishy’ faced breeds like French bulldogs and pugs have trouble holding their snouts above the water line, which can lead them to panic. You’ll have to judge your dog’s capability in the water, but don’t leave them unattended. Even competent swimmers can tire quickly or lose confidence if spooked, so stay close by and step in if needed.
WEAR, TEAR AND HAIR Keeping your dog well-groomed will help reduce wear and tear on the pool’s interior and filtration system. Sharp nails can be a problem – especially for vinyl-lined pools – and are a safety hazard for other swimmers. Regularly clip your pup’s nails to prevent scratches and damage. While dog hair shouldn’t strain the filter system too much, you’ll probably need extra skimming to capture the additional load. Dogs bring more than hair into the pool – like dirt, skin oil and probably a bit of faecal matter too. These add organics and phosphates, which algae love to feed on, so you may need a phosphate remover. Regularly check chlorine levels to ensure a healthy water balance and consider using a clarifier or a shock dose if needed. CHOOSING YOUR POOL AND SPA

POOLSPALIFE.COM.AU
ARE CHEMICALS SAFE FOR DOGS? Pool chemicals can cause slight skin or eye irritations in dogs, but it shouldn’t be a big problem. Avoid gastrointestinal issues by minimising the amount of pool water he drinks, if possible. If your pup just won’t stop, remove him from the pool and pop him in the shade with some cool tap water. Hose before and after a swim to minimise irritation and make sure to clean and dry ears thoroughly to avoid infection.
SAFETY FIRST As with people, do everything you can to ensure an incident-free swim. There are plenty of safety aids designed for pups – life jackets, flotation toys and steps, ladders and ramps that make entry and exit easier. Life jackets are a great way to build confidence and are especially helpful for pups that tire quickly or for more muscular (less buoyant) breeds. Make sure your dog can’t access the pool area alone. Unattended dogs – even confident swimmers – can easily fall into the pool and slip under non-solid covers, becoming trapped without anyone noticing. If your dog enjoys the water, there is absolutely no reason why he or she can’t join you for a dip. Just be sure to prioritise safety and ensure that no-one’s health is at risk…including Fido’s.
