The Parks & Recreation Board is a volunteer board, which reviews and recommends policies, rules and budgets relating to functions of the recreation programs, parks operations, Aquatic Center, River Run Golf Course, and more. The board typically meets the first Monday of every month at 6:00pm at City Hall.

REGISTER EARLY

Register at least 4 weeks prior to the first day. This can also help ensure your placement in popular programs that see high enrollment numbers. Though we never hope to cancel a program, sometimes it becomes necessary due to low enrollment.

REGISTRATION DATES

Online and in-person registration is available. Registration deadlines occur two or three weeks prior to the first day. Please note that high enrollment programs may fill before the deadline. Registration will open 2 Months before program start date.

RESIDENT/NON-RESIDENT FEES

Resident fees apply to anyone with a City of Sparta home address. Non-resident fees apply to anyone living in another township. Please note that the Sparta Area School District and the City of Sparta have different boundaries.

PAYMENT METHODS

We gladly accept cash, check, and credit card payments. Checks can be made payable to the "City of Sparta". If paying online there is a convenience fee added onto your total purchase.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

When you volunteer as a coach in the program, you receive a coaching credit to your Parks & Recreation account that can be applied for the following season Coaches will have their child on their team only There will be no requesting coaches this year or requesting other players

Program Participation

If you registering for a program it is your responsibility to attend every session within the program. Failure to do so may make you ineligible for future registrations. If you can no longer make a program please let a Parks & Rec staff member know.

Rec Gymnastics is a year-round program designed to maximize fun while learning the sport. We encourage all students to reach their full potential at their own pace. Classes focus on developing strength, flexibility, coordination, and confidence while learning new and exciting skills.

IN-HOUSE SOCCER

This is an in-house recreation league that focuses on learning the fundamentals of the game. Soccer is offered in the Spring & Fall. Players are responsible for providing their own socks, shoes, and shin guards are mandatory. Registration is available for the following age groups:

"TRAVEL" VOLLEYBALL

This program is a travel league against local teams (Onalaska, Holmen, BGC, G-E-T, etc). The girls will be placed on teams and play Tuesday and Thursday games. ROOKIE SOFTBALL

Rookie Softball is the next step after Ragball. This program is open to girls who have completed 1st or 2nd grade. The emphasis is placed on the fundamentals and learning the rules of softball. TRAVEL SOFTBALL

This program is for girls who have completed 3rd - 8th grade. Practices are in Sparta. Games are all over the Coulee Region. Teams practice 2 to 3 times a week and play games/tournaments throughout the summer. Based on numbers we will either have 1 or 2 teams in each age group. If numbers allow we will hold tryouts to create an “A” and “B” team for 12U and 14U groups. 10U teams will be split up equally with one team playing only on Mondays and the other playing on Wednesdays. “A” teams will focus on building advanced fundamentals of softball as well as continuing perfecting the basic skills. “B” team will focus on building on the basic fundamentals to reach the advanced fundamentals. Teams will compete at the teams’ skill level within the 7 rivers league and tournaments.

YOUTH SPORTS

WRESTLING (2026)

This program is offered in the beginning of January through March each year. Wrestling has many positive social, emotional, and physical benefits that help children become well-rounded, successful people today and throughout their life. Girls and boys will build new friendships, and improve physical and mental well-being while having fun with friends. Wrestlers will have the option to attend tournaments as a team during the season, but it is not required or facilitated by the rec program. Parents are responsible for any additional tournament registrations and fees during the season. More information will be provided once practice begins. WRESTLING

SPARTA PARKS & RECREATION

Come and learn the basics of archery in an 8 week session. Archery is offered when an instructor is available. SPR provides all the equipment needed, archers just need to come with an open mind, great listening skills, and the ability to learn. Archers are welcome to bring their own bow as long as it is a NASP approved Genesis bow. Arrows are provided for all. Archery is instructed by community members, so it runs when the instructors are available. All participants must start in the beginner class in order to advance to the next level. The instructor will advance students as they progress through the program. Registration is available for the following ages:

Rec Basketball (In-House)

In this league, kids develop all their basketball skills from shooting and dribbling to teamwork and sportsmanship. Practices are twice a week with games on Saturdays. This program is in need of parent coaches. Boys and girls will be separated as long as numbers allow for it.

STEMKAMP

Teaches science concepts and incorporates hands-on learning. Teachers encourage kids to design solutions, test them and then re-design them to come up with the best possible solution. Located at Meadowview MS in June for 3rd-8th graders. Registration opens this spring. Register & learn more at the Sparta School District website.

This program is available to anyone who wants to get some exercise. This is an open gym setting, whoever shows up will get an opportunity to play. In the Summer months, players meet at the Barney Center outdoor courts and play. Paddles are available to borrow from the parks and rec office. All levels of play are welcome, even if you have never played before.

Did you know you can start working at the Sparta pool at the age of 14 years old? We currently accepting applications for: Lifeguards and Concessions, Admissions, Bathhouse, and Slide (CABS) workers. Certifications are required for specific positions. Training will be offered. Starting pay is $10.50 for CABS and $14.00 for Lifeguards. Raises are distributed at the end of the season and are performancebased.

Applications are available at the Parks and Rec office or can be found online. The deadline to apply is March 31st.

The overall purpose of our program is to teach and make sure participants can achieve all the skills and learn how to use these skills to stay safe. Swim Lessons are offered to all levels of swimmers and classes are based on skill level, not age. Sign up for ONLY one class in May. RIVER RUN GOLF COURSE

Sparta welcomes you to come and play the River Run Golf Course, formerly known as Sparta Municipal Golf Course, located in west-central Wisconsin just a couple miles off Interstate 90. This beautiful municipal course was expanded to 18 holes in 1982 and has matured beautifully and is truly a pleasure to play. The front nine runs along Perch Lake and the back nine holes meander through cuts in mature pine. The four sets of tees per hole offer a 6,622-yard course from the champion tees and 5,473 yards from the forward tees so golfers of every level of play can enjoy a great round of golf.

The pro-shop offers rentals such as clubs and both riding and pull carts for your convenience. Our friendly staff makes every effort to see that your time on our course is pleasurable. Located right next to the River Run pro-shop is The Greens Bar & Restaurant, offering daily lunch specials, a list of burgers sure to satisfy any taste, and a full-service bar.

SMART GOLF

This program is a parent-and-child program that focuses on teaching children and their parent(s) basic golf mechanics. Register through the Sparta Parks & Rec at www.spartaparks.com.

Parks & Rentals

SPARTA PARKS

SPR manages a 258-acre park system of over 11 parks and extensive natural areas throughout the City of Sparta. Also providing athletic fields, play areas, specialty gardens, and more than 20 miles of trails, the Sparta Parks System offers outdoor recreation for all. Most parks within the Sparta Parks System have shelters for rent, grills and restrooms. For a complete list of the Sparta Parks and Shelters see below. SPR also manages many facilities, including the Barney Family Community Center, River Run Golf Course, Sparta Family Aquatic Center, Senior Center, Fitness Center, ten outdoor shelters, and much more.

All Sparta parks are open to the public.

PARK SHELTER RENTALS

Looking for a great place to have a family reunion, birthday party, or picnic? Sparta Parks shelters are available from May to October to rent. Each shelter includes twelve picnic tables and electricity from 8:00am to 10:00pm. To reserve a shelter or facility, call the Parks & Recreation office at 608-269-6322. You can make a reservation a year in advance. Reservations are first come, first serve.

FACILITY RENTALS

The Sparta Barney Community Center is operated and supervised by City of Sparta Park & Recreation Department. This facility is the home Parks & Recreation office, the Sparta Boys & Girls Club, and the Sparta Meal Site for The Aging and Disability Resource Center of Monroe County.

The Community Center and the Sparta Fitness Center are also available to the public to rent.
