ake a picture of it. That’s the advice I read the other day about cleaning out your closet. If there’s an item that you can no longer use but has special meaning to you, take a picture of it and give the item to someone who can use it.

If it’s super sentimental, you can archive it, which is just a fancy way of saying put it in a box in your attic.

I’m trying to do this, but it’s so hard.

I’m been a follower of fashion since I was a little girl. From the time I was five, I was referred to as “The Bag Lady” because of my love of purses. Everything I’ve worn since then, including my grass green Chinos in sixth grade, my faux alligator loafers in 11th grade and my torn Gap jeans in college, has been carefully selected to express my style. I just can’t let go of these artifacts because to me they represent history; they represent who I was at the time.

While some people look at clothing as a utilitarian item we have to purchase to cover our bodies, I look at it as a way to tell the world what I’m thinking and what I’m about. To me that’s the difference between fashion and style. Fashion is buying the latest thing because you’re told to do so.

Style is knowing what works for you and what expresses who you are.

Style permeates everything in your life from your clothing to your home to what 8

What do you want to tell the world? you’re reading. And no, you don’t have to have a lot of money to have style. I’ve seen folks put together an outfit at Goodwill that looks just as fabulous as something from the best boutique in town. It’s all about knowing how to tell your story.

These days, my story is pretty casual.

As the mother of two-year-old twins (at the lake no less, see page 68), I can’t sport three-inch heels with a dress. I have to wear things that allow me to move — fast.

Needless to say, my running shoes are in heavy rotation.

While I sometimes miss my chic 20-something self, I’m having fun navigating new ground. Through trial and error, I’ve put together a casual look that works for my lifestyle, yet still allows the fashionista in me some sunlight. Who knew leopard skin flats could be so powerful?

This spring as you clean out your closet, think about the story you want to tell, take a few pictures and pass on what you don’t need to someone else. At the end of the day, you’ll feel good knowing that part of your history is helping others create their own.

Doug and Sharon Johnston are jaded — in a good way

Over the past 20 years, Doug and Sharon Johnston have become jaded, and it has everything to do with a semi-precious stone. The Cornelius couple has acquired a collection of more than 168 pieces of jade, including ancient Chinese artifacts dating back to 5000 B.C. The Johnstons bought their first piece at an auction and later began purchasing jade online from a few families in China. In addition to their Neolithic collection, they also own jade art representing the Shang, Zhou, Han, Sui and Ming dynasties in China. Other pieces are from Inner Mongolia and Tibet. One of their finds is a bullhead field marshal seal that was used to communicate orders from the emperor to the battlefields.

Jade is more widely known for its dark green color, but the Johnston’s collection also features more rare colors, such as white, black, red, orange and celadon. Ancient artists made intricate carvings into jade by rubbing a semi-precious paste and bamboo sticks over the hard stone.

“The beauty of the individual artist is really something,” says Doug. “There’s some artist centuries ago in our past who saw this jade stone in a river bank and carved something beautiful like this.”

The Johnstons had family ties to China long before their passion for jade collecting. Sharon’s mother was born in China while her grandparents were missionaries in the country. Doug’s mother used to make Chinese modern furniture.

Jade collecting has further fostered the couple’s interest in Chinese history. “It’s fascinating. That’s what hooks you,” says Doug. “You get this stuff and then all of the sudden you’re reading books on jade and looking up Chinese history on the Internet.”

Robert Acree, general manager of Mooresville Ice Cream, is a 23-year veteran in the business of ice cream brand development and marketing all over the country. He moved here from California six months ago, and he’s already set a lofty goal.

“We’re trying to reach three million mouths in 2012,” says Acree, noting Bi-Lo, Food Lion and Lowes Foods are set to carry the pints of ice cream being distributed throughout North and South Carolina. The new Front Porch van will be in the community every weekend spring through fall. In addition to local venues, Acree says the ice cream will be at the Cooper River Bridge Run (in Charleston), Food Lion Speed Street Festival and Taste of Charlotte, just to name a few events.

Jan Enright’s patio transformation catches the eye of Better Homes and Gardens She makes a living designing gardens for people all over the Lake Norman area, but last spring, Jan Enright realized she was tired of looking out of her kitchen window and having a concrete slab as her view. She tried putting an outdoor rug in the space, but grew frustrated when

it kept blowing across her yard. She remembered painting a “floor cloth” for a client’s porch years ago and decided to create one of her own.

Her project caught the eye of a local freelance writer for Better Homes and Gardens and will be featured in this month’s issue of the magazine,

A Mooresville resident, Enright earned a degree in art from the University of Richmond and discovered a love of working outdoors with landscapes and gardens about 30 years ago. She introduced herself to the owner of Farm House Gardeners in Statesville and eventually began working as a contractor, helping the garden center’s clients who needed design work and installation.

Enright now services a variety of clients through Jan Enright Creations, which she describes as “bringing comfort and joy to living in outdoor spaces.” In addition to being showcased in Southern Living three different times, her projects have also been featured in Perennials magazine.

For the floor cloth, Enright used acrylic paint and painter’s tape to lay out the blocks and borders in the design, and stencils from Michael’s for the patterns. She says the design will last as long as it is coated with a protective sealer.

Hope at the Point Gala

The second annual Hope at the Point Gala themed “A Taste of New Orleans and All That Jazz” was held on January 28 at The Charles Mack Citizen Center in Mooresville. The event had more than 140 attendees and began with a silent auction. Music was provided by the band Sign of the Times. At 7:30 p.m. the group moved into the main dining room where impressive cuisine was served while all those in attendance enjoyed the jazz and blues music of Toni Tupponce.

The dinner was followed by a program, emceed by Kellie Patterson from WCNC 36, which included guest speakers representing local charities as well as people within the community who have benefited from the services offered by the charities. A live auction was then held followed by dancing.

The event grossed more than $115,000, and the proceeds will be shared by The Mooresville Christian Mission, The Soup Kitchen, Health Reach Clinic and Purple Heart Homes.

ommuter rail is once again a hot topic in the Lake Norman area. Consultants have unveiled a new plan to build the $452 million-, 25-mile Red Line that would connect the lake to Charlotte.

Those pushing for the Red Line have been asking local leaders to examine the proposal and offer feedback.

To learn more, we sat down with Bill Thunberg. He’s the former mayor of Mooresville and the owner of Alexander Zachary Jewelers in Mooresville. He currently serves on the Lake Norman Regional Transportation Commission.

Commuter rail has fewer stops, and it’s more like an Amtrak car. It’s pretty much heavy rail. So the person that’s on commuter rail, if they get on the train in Mooresville and they’re riding to Charlotte, they’re going to be able to plug their laptop in and sit there and work. They’re going to be able to read. It’s a 30-minute ride with fewer stops.

Would this be an improvement for the area?

Anytime you offer people choices of modes, at the very least, it’s an improvement. Because you can get people in and out of work without having to have an automobile.

How is this funding model different from the previous one?

It’s quite different than the original method. The original model was for the public to pay for it and then the private people are going to benefit. The private sector is going to pay www.LNCurrents.com

for it, and the public is going to benefit. It requires a different way of thinking. But it also requires a lot of questions to be asked.

What’s the latest timeline?

The plan is to be vetted by all nine of the entities involved by the end of March. (The nine are CATS, NCDOT, Mecklenburg County, Iredell County, Charlotte, Huntersville, Cornelius, Davidson and Mooresville.)

So sometime in April hopefully there would be a consensus plan that comes out of this that addresses some of the concerns that come up in the process of reviewing the plan.

Has that technology been able to get any traction?

Do you have concerns about this project?

The answer to that is yes. But all the traction has been international. They’ve tested it in Japan, and they’re getting ready to go live with one in Spain.

I’m a supporter of rail as an alternative mode of transportation. My concerns are the same concerns that everybody else has: Are we going to be able to pay for it the way we think we’re going to be able to pay for it?

What do you see happening in the next month or so?

Do you think there’s a solution that everyone can be satisfied with?

What I see happening is that the consultants will know what the specific criticisms are. And then they’ll also know what the inclination of the private sector is. And I think we’ll know by mid-April if this is viable or not.

I think there is if people are willing to say that they might not get 100 percent of what “I” want right at this minute. There’s gotta be some give and take to make things work.

admit the idea came from the TV show, Dirty Jobs. I approached CURRENTS’ editor Lori K. Tate about 18 months ago with the idea of a Lake Norman version of the concept.

She loved it.

Called Tom’s Jobs, the column would be about me being an unpaid employee for a number of Lake Norman-area businesses over the course of a year. I would give CURRENTS’ readers an upclose-and-personal look at the diverse occupations of their neighbors.

Now that the year is over, I admit that it’s been a blast.

Personally, the experience has been a fantasy and an opportunity to experience a number of careers I’ve always been curious about. The diversity of jobs has been refreshing; I was a teacher at Lake Norman High School one month and a 20

I learned that Bagel Bin employees go to work at 4 a.m. and laugh a lot behind the counter. My dirtiest job was working on a tugboat and barge rig for Lake Norman Dredging & Marine Construction. I helped construct a new riprap wall along the shoreline of a beautiful lakeside home.

Later I spent a day working at the BirdBrain Ostrich Ranch in Sherrills Ford and will always remember two things: never turn your back on a 10-foot tall male ostrich — especially during www.LNCurrents.com

During a humid summer evening, carving a three-foot tall swan out of ice quickly fogged up my safety glasses and made it difficult to see what my chain saw was carving. My swan turned out better than I expected, but it did look a little bit like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

After a year of testing different jobs in the Lake Norman area, I’ve recently accepted an exciting new career in New York City. For the next several years, I will be working in an office on the 48th floor of the beautiful Chrysler Building in Manhattan as president of an exciting auto racing venture, which will have Formula One race cars competing on the banks of the Hudson River in New Jersey in June 2013. I couldn’t say no.

I won’t get far from my Lake Norman roots, though; I’ll fly home every weekend so I can replenish my sanity in a way only our area can do.

erinary Clinic was probably the most significant job I had during the year. Not only did I wash dogs and manicure their nails, but I actually participated in the surgery of a gentle female boxer, who had suspected cancer of the gums. Luckily, those suspicions proved false.

The most fun job I’ve had? That’s a no-brainer; it was the evening I spent as the mascot at a Davidson College basketball game in January.

Putting aside the fact that the costume was hot and sweaty, it was the most fun job a person could have while wearing someone else’s clothes.

I told the cheerleading coach, Jeanette Scire, that I would gladly do it on a weekly basis if the need arose.

HINT: Dried lavender tastes stronger than fresh. You want just enough lavender to add a splash of brightness and faintly floral scent. Too much lavender makes the beverage astringent. Remember, chefs often swap lavender and rosemary in a recipe because their undertones are so similar. For thousands of years, saffron has been the world’s most expensive spice. Tow make saffron, workers must pluck bronze-colored threads from inside a crocus. Food adventurers splurge on saffron to give a dish a lush golden color and an intricate flavor unlike any other. • Grind saffron threads in a mortar or with the back of a spoon until you have 3/4 of a teaspoon.

Put your ground-up saffron threads, which should look like golden powder, in a cup.

• Pour four tablespoons of boiling water over saffron and stir. Cover the cup and let it soak for one hour.

• Cover a small, flat pan with aluminum foil then pour a layer of whipping cream evenly on top of the foil. Place it in the freezer until it hardens.

This takes about three hours.

• Take vanilla ice cream from freezer and let it stand at room temperature to soften.

• When ice cream is mushy, add the dissolved saffron liquid to the ice cream and mix well. Remove the whipping cream from freezer. Break it into small pieces.

he new executive chef at Jeffrey’s Restaurant learned his love of fresh ingredients and the art of cooking from his grandmothers, especially his paternal grandmother.

“That’s where I also got my love of gardening,” Michael Spencer says. “She was the inspiration. I’ve always been like a sponge, soaking up knowledge. I learned the aspects of freshness and how hard it was to grow food that was edible.”

Spencer brings that tradition and respect for fresh food to the popular Mooresville restaurant, which he joined in October. Spencer, Sous Chef Josh Baxley and their culinary team have focused on refreshing the menu and offering new twists on long-time favorites.

Local restaurateurs Jeff and Terry Lancaster own the restaurant, as well as Lancaster’s BBQ and The Boathouse.

“Our chef is so creative with his food,” says General Manager Kerri Williams, who has been with the restaurant since it opened in February 2005. “He’s made everything so much more flavorful.”

Executive chef Michael Spencer, Sous Chef Josh Baxley and their culinary team have focused on refreshing the menu and offering new twists on long-time favorites at Jeffrey's Restaurant.

The alchemy of food Jeffrey’s features New American cuisine with a southern flair. While its heritage is grounded in traditional southern dishes, modern techniques and presentation add a contemporary touch.

Spencer grew up in Southport on the coast of North Carolina, and he experienced the pleasures of fresh vegetables and seafood while learning culinary and sustainability techniques. He also draws inspiration and knowledge from time spent in North Carolina and New Orleans restaurants, including Soiree, a downtown Mooresville restaurant he owned and operated with his brother.

“My approach to food is creativity and consistency,” Spencer explains. One of his first tasks when he joined Jeffrey’s was to write recipes for each dish offered by the restaurant to ensure consistency. Another important effort has been to focus on techniques in the kitchen. “You have to cook with your heart, cook with your soul, cook with your eyes and ears and nose,” he says. “You have to be able to make adjustments. Techniques are more important than recipes. Technique is being able to produce every time.”

Learning to observe subtle differences in the ingredients and knowing how to respond to those differences is a major ingredient in the art of cooking, he says. “We’re definitely alchemists.”

members know the food and wines well so they can answer guests’ questions with confidence and knowledge. “Our chef has a box of plastic disposable spoons in the kitchen, so they can taste anything they want and can learn the food,” Williams says. “We have a wine tasting coming up for them, so they can learn the new wines.”

Consistent quality is also the byword for the approach the restaurant takes in its guest relations, Williams says. “We want a friendly atmosphere, and we try to make everyone welcome,” she says. “We have a lot of servers who have been with us since the beginning.”

The restaurant is also adding new events for its guests. “We’re offering wine dinners and beer dinners,” Williams says. “We’ll have live music every Friday and Saturday night, starting in March. Its first dinner theater, a production of Love Letters, seemed to be well received, she says. “It was a hit. We’re going to try to do a mystery dinner.”

Jeffrey’s has also opened a lounge near the bar to provide a cozy area that expands its options, which include a banquet room that seats 60 people and a patio. “Our bar just wasn’t big enough,” Williams says. “We have people who want to come in and have a drink and appetizers after work.”

unday evenings are kind of special for my wife and I. We gather together with a bunch of neighbors at a nearby tavern for conversation and a sip or two of wine. One recent Sunday gave me a pleasant surprise and set me to thinking. The surprise was that the one in our group who’s a founding member of the White Zinfandel For Life Association was tasting something new — a Chenin Blanc.

It always tickles me to see someone branching out to something new in wine, but this time it also got me to thinking that I tend to ignore this wine. And that’s really not too smart.

Chenin Blanc doesn’t get the attention it deserves. It’s totally overwhelmed by grapes like Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay when it comes to palate share. And that translates to one thing, great value for money. I love great value for money.

Languishing In The Shadows There are several reasons that I think contribute to Chenin Blanc’s ‘under-the-radar’ status.

Historically the grape has been used in California as a high-yield production grape to help create low-cost, bulk wines — hardly a way to generate any respect.

The obvious question is, ‘What do Chenin Blanc wines taste like?’ There really isn’t a simple answer. Chenin Blanc is probably the most flexible of all the grapes. It can grow in a variety of soils and climates, and the wines it produces are a strong reflection of where and how its grapes have been grown. That, to me, makes it terrifically interesting.

Starting At The Beginning Let's start in France, in the Loire region. This is where Chenin Blanc originates. Loire Chenin Blanc produces an astounding range of wines — from crisp, dry and acidic to sweet and complex.

For me the star of this region is a wine called Savennières. I feel a tinge of guilt talking about it because it's not the easiest wine to find. But it's a wine worth searching out. Savennières is all about balance; it’s soft and full-bodied without being overbearing.

Smelling Savennières you get a huge waft of honey so you anticipate a sweet wine. Nothing doing; on the palate the wine is bone dry with flavors like lanolin, dried honey and lemon. It has crisp acidity and huge amounts of earthy,

mineral flavors. All of this in just one sip of wine.

Not a casual wine for a Tuesday evening roasted chicken, but not too expensive. You should be able to find a bottle for around $25. Remember, we all deserve a treat once in a while.

To see how flexible Chenin Blanc is, try a wine that’s grown nearby to Savennières, just across the river in Coteaux-du-Layon. This wine is made from grapes that are allowed to really ripen and develop lots of sugar. This is another terrifically complex wine; sweeter but

Secondly, the grape has its greatest prowess in the Loire region of France. But, there, all the wines are named for the region they come from, not what grape is in them. So the Chenin Blanc, itself, grape gets little recognition. Finally, there’s South Africa. This country produces a large amount of quality Chenin Blanc wines — it’s also called Steen there. But during the trade boycott of the apartheid years, none of the wines made Chenin Blanc is probably the most flexible of all the it out of the country. All in all, Chenin Blanc has grapes. It can grow in a variety of soils and climates.

balancing sweetness and acidity. Just the thing for some fois gras or paté.

Out Of Africa If we move from the coolness of the Loire Valley to the warmth of South Africa we run into another style of Chenin Blanc. These wines vary. They can be as acidic as their French cousins. They can be weightier, deeper and richer.

Part of their characteristics comes from the soil and warm climate. Part comes from the winemaker’s art; South African winemakers tend to age their wines in oak and let wine age on its lees (dead yeast). The wines have flavors like tropical fruits and baked apples. They may be a little buttery, but that’s balanced by a small amount of citrus acidity.

Chenin Blanc has an issue that causes South African growers some headaches. It grows too well. It’s prolific. Some wine nerd stuff; to get concentrated flavors growers like to keep grape yields low (measured in metric terms, around 40 or 50 hectoliters per hectare). In South Africa the fertile soil and climate can produce huge yields of more than 200 hectoliters per hectare. The result would be wimpy, almost watery wines — neutral and bland. So growers have to thin out their vines constantly during the growing season to constrain their yields.

There’s no absolute way, just by looking at a label, to judge whether the wine inside a bottle is the result of grapes that have been properly cultivated. But, I’ve got a strategy that I’m going to follow. By law, a label has to show the alcohol content of the wine in the bottle. I’m going to use a simple rule of thumb with South African Chenin Blancs and select only those that have an alcohol content greater than 12.5 percent. No guarantee, but a fun project to try — lots of tasting along the way. And not a price challenge. These wines are inexpensive.

It was cool and crisp with warm fruits and honey kicking in at the end. As well as tasting cool, the price was cool — around $10.

I hate it when a grape languishes in the shadows. So, I’m on a mission to get to know Chenin Blanc better. I’m pretty hooked on the Loire Valley wines, and I’m anxious to delve into South

After so many seasons with Penske Racing, Reynolds should know. During the week, he oversees the development, production and supply operation of IndyCar parts at Penske’s massive Mooresville headquarters, and come race day, he serves as Airjack, one of the six “over the wall” pit crew positions on the No. 2 Team Penske Dallara/Chevrolet. With a unique skill set and a multi-faceted job description, it’s fair to say Reynolds plays a vital role in keeping not one but all three of Penske Racing’s IndyCar teams in contention.

“Across the board, if it’s being made or being bought then that’s me,” he explains.

“And on race day, I think the pressure of going over the wall and to be as close to perfect as possible, makes each and every pit stop energizing."

From a job that began after he ambitiously answered a want ad in Autoweek magazine for a Penske mechanic job near his childhood home in Reading, Pennsylvania, Reynolds has built a career. He loves the depth of his work and thrives on the intricacies and complexities of the garage. And he works passionately to see the sport, itself, grow and become more complex.

“I’m a big planner and am pushed each and every day to try to figure out this sport of racing and how our teams can be just a bit better than the next guy,” says Reynolds. “It’s the drive to see what happens next, to be a part of the evolution of this racing wheel that I love so much.” LNC 51

“People are always interested at first to learn that I’m in racing,” Reynolds, 39, says with a smile. “It’s like they can’t wait for me to tell them stories about great [Sprint] Cup races and close finishes, but when they hear that I’m on the IndyCar side, well, that’s when the conversations usually end.”

In many regions of America, where NASCAR is king, Reynolds believes it’s fair that IndyCar often comes across as the “black sheep” in the family. The IZOD IndyCar Series runs a smaller race schedule on American soil, has a smaller fan base and doesn’t grab the headlines like NASCAR’s top three professional series do. Bigger sponsorship dollars are pumped into NASCAR, and because of the differing natures and demands of the two sports, Reynolds says, top Sprint Cup teams might maintain staffs to keep up to 11

ost people know Dan Yarborough as a local farrier and horse trainer.

The sign in front of his family’s Denver farm, where he makes a living tending to the specific needs of privately owned horses, subtly promotes his services. What most people don’t know is that he also competes in NHRA (National Reining Horse Association) shows. And when it comes to results, well, even fewer people know Dan Yarborough is the best in the world.

“It’s a dream come true for me, and I never thought I’d see my name listed as world champion,” 29-year-old Yarborough says. “Every day I wake up and pinch myself. It’s a feeling that I’m still getting used to.”

Taking the reigns Yarborough credits his grandfather for welcoming him to the barn and introducing him to riding. He says he felt the pull of horsemanship from the first day he could walk.

“As soon as I learned how to walk, I’d take off for the barn,” Yarborough recalls. “I’d cut through the fence, go under it, around it or do whatever I had to do to get there. That’s where my grandfather was, and so that’s where I wanted to be. When I got there, he’d put me on a horse as my reward. And even now, when I wake up every day, I think about him and still want to go to the barn.”

Riding horses became a part of Yarborough’s daily routine. His high school graduation present was an 8-year-old horse named Chex. In 2005, Yarborough brought Even More Better to the barn from Chicago and won his first show two years later. By 2008, Yarborough had surrendered his non-pro

card and was showing against the world’s top equestrians.

“Reigning is a very specialized sport,” Yarborough explains. “Basically, it comes down to how well you and the horse can execute a pattern of moves with the least resistance between the horse and the rider, plus the highest degree of difficulty. It’s about speed, precision and flow, and the horse and rider working together.”

The NRHA explains reigning as a judged event designed to show the athletic ability of a

“To get on the national stage, you have to have a really good horse, and when we brought Smartest home from Arizona in 2010, I knew we had something special,” says Yarborough.

“We hit the ground running, and last year, when I saw that I was in the top three of each of the divisions I was entered in, I called the owner and asked if I could really compete through the end of the year. We both knew I had a special horse, and we wanted to see how

far we could take it. As the season continued, I believed I could show up anywhere and knew that I had a chance to win it. He is the best horse I have ever ridden.”

During the 2011 lead up to becoming world champion, Yarborough and Smartest showed in 20 events from North Carolina, Georgia, Kentucky and Tennessee to New Jersey and Mississippi. He won the title with a strong finish at the NRHA Futurity Show in Oklahoma City.

Life as a champ Yarborough says his life has not changed much since last season ended, but there are a few things that appear to be different.

“My family and my friends think it’s cool to have a world champion in town, but aside from the sign my mom hung on the barn without me knowing, not much else around here in my life has changed. I wake up in the morning and still have to go to work,” he jokes. “But what this really is to me is a feeling. I thank my horse, and I thank my owner every chance I can. I’m fortunate that it happened to me.”

Yarborough says he’s still got the best of both worlds. “I love shoeing horses, and I love riding horses,” he says. “When I finish shoeing horses each day, there’s nothing I want to do more than ride. nterior designer Catherine Boardman has magically merged old and new in the modern design of a Victorian home in Davidson, creating a space with modern sensibility and functionality — and yet remaining true to the home’s roots.

An accomplished chef, Olenic outfitted the existing kitchen with chef-worthy appliances and accoutrements. And a family room addition off the kitchen now accommodates modern, casual entertaining. Salvaging original elements (crown molding, interior doors) for use in the new upstairs and then reproducing those elements anew for use in the old downstairs, Olenic visually blurred the lines between old and new in the home. Less obvious details such as using recycled materials whenever possible and installing tankless water heaters further modernize and personalize the home.

In the family room, Boardman sought to make the room appear “collected rather than designed.” Olenic and Harrold found an unusually scaled lamp (“the Abraham Lincoln lamp,” as Olenic calls it), which Boardman used to anchor the extra long Vanguard sofa and to balance the room’s large windows. The Danish modern chair was Boardman’s find from an antique mall. Refinished and covered in a nubby, plush fabric, it lends an aged, cozy layer to the room.

The distinctive Phillips Collection coffee tables arguably make the room. Rustic yet sleek and dramatic, they play a key role in bridging old and new and bringing personality into the space. The Crate and Barrel barstools at the kitchen island are where Olenic can be found daily working on his computer. “Sometimes modern can be sterile,” he says, “and it doesn’t always function. But these — they’re so comfortable.”

“John Michael Ryan is from Rochester, New York, and he is a young wiz on the button accordion,” says Lebedinsky. “He’s amazingly talented.”

The program offers songs based on the words of St. Patrick and St. Ita. Although the focus will be on the sacred side of the Irish experience, look for love songs as well as some drinking songs.

Lebedinsky says Celtic music is just a pure joy to play because the songs are so rich. “The energy and the fun of it is so contagious,” he adds.

enry Lebedinsky plans to get folks in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day with what he knows best — music. The former organist and director of music at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson moved away from the area in January of last year and now resides in Minneapolis. He returns to St. Alban’s on Saturday, March 10 to perform a concert titled The Deer’s Cry: Music for the Celtic

Saints with Abigail Lennox and Earl’s Chair.

Music consumes Lebedinsky’s life as he’s the interim director of music at St. Clement’s Episcopal Church in Saint Paul, directs The Seicento String Band, plays with Earl’s Chair and The Beggar Boys, and also writes music. While at St. Alban’s he founded the Music at St. Alban’s concert series and served as its artistic director.

Though he loves the Midwest and its colder climate, he’s excited about visiting Davidson again. “I miss the place,” he says. “I lived there for six years.” Lebedinsky plans to visit some of his old haunts while he’s in town such as Flatiron and Ted’s Famous Chicken Restaurant in Mooresville.

hen I first moved to the Lake Norman area, I still worked in Charlotte quite a bit. I’d dart into The Queen City wearing heels and dresses, not thinking a thing of it until my feet began screaming at me by the day’s end.

Little by little my life completely moved to the lake area. My work involved less contact with Charlotte. I stopped going to my salon in Dilworth. I said goodbye to my dry cleaning lady on Morehead Street, and I began discovering that there was indeed shopping beyond the walls of SouthPark.

With that shift came a change in how I dressed.

Slowly my pumps morphed into strappy sandals and wedges, and my kitten heels evolved into ballet flats. Before I knew it, my whole look had been casualized. And yes, I just made up that word.

Just to make sure I wasn’t making anything else up, I asked Emily Haggart to define the lake area’s look. She should know, as she owns Avalilly’s in Cornelius and Fresh in Charlotte (in the fashionable Myers Park neighborhood to be exact).

“Lake style is trendy, casual, fun and flirty,” says Haggart, who admits that she dresses up a bit more when she heads into Charlotte. “If you think about what people are doing on the week-

ends here and at night when they’re getting off of work, they’re going to be doing more casual things like going on the lake.”

Bingo! The more I lived in this area, the more I found myself conducting interviews wearing sundresses and flip-flops during the summer. I carried my notebook and tape recorder in a straw bag, and my sunglasses constantly served a double life as a headband. I was too busy enjoying feeling like I was on vacation every day to notice that I had completely embraced Lake Norman’s style.

While there are variations of it depending on what you do for a living, lake style has certain characteristics that shine through no matter who you are. The obvious one is the casualness of it all, which is probably why we all decided to live near a lake in the first place.

It’s no surprise that the area’s resort feel permeates how we dress. But just because we’re casual doesn’t mean we don’t look good.

Haggart says that a lot of thought goes into creating the casually chic look that runs so

rampant here. “There are a lot of Jack Rogers sandals and even Tory Burch flip-flops. Cute sandals are acceptable to wear with a nice dress even to a nice restaurant,” she explains. “It’s acceptable because you know that someone might have just gotten off their boat or at least that’s what you’re thinking.”

For men, getting gussied up for dinner means wearing Sperry Top-Siders instead of a worn-in pair of Reefs and sporting khaki shorts instead of swim trunks. Suits are out of the equation except in a few instances, and ties are mainly reserved for bankers and some, but not all, lawyers.

As I look at my wardrobe now, I’m thrilled that it’s less formal because in my mind I know that means I’m having more fun and that I’m hopefully spending more time out on the water. LNC
