WEEK 01 HERITAGE DEFINITION

HERITAGE

Heritage interweaves memory, lifeworld and fantasy. It can be tangible and material, or mental and cultural. The lifeworld we are experiencing is constantly in oscillation between the past, present and future. Heritage is the medium of the past story. It preserves the course of time and concretized our memories.

Memory is the ground of imagination. In addition to being a memory device, heritage is also an amplifier of emotions. It records the human narratives of the past and stimulates our imaginations and reflections towards the deceased builders and occupants, later the future of our own.

Both the memory and fantasy brought by heritage is centralized with human experience of past, present and future. Heritage carries the communication between generations.

Street

Historically for its association with this important flour milling and biscuit precinct as well as the nationally known figure of Thomas Brunton. As part of the North & West Melbourne Biscuit Making & Flour Milling precinct commenced in the 1870s and still operating, the Brunton complex is sited close to key railway sidings where wheat shipments arrived from the north. This complex is a key part of a precinct that, when combined with that of nearby Kensington, is Victoria’s biggest ever flour milling and biscuit manufacturing complex in terms of built site coverage and output.

- A silo is a structure for storing bulk materials, e.g grain, coal, cement, carbon black, woodchips, food products and sawdust.

- Cylindrical structures, typically 3 to 27 m in diameter and 10 to 90 m in height.

- Vertical elevators are the only current workable systems people use to fill grain silos.

- In most silos, gravity causes grain to flow from the top of the silo and out through an opening at the bottom near the center.

- Concrete stave silos are built from common components designed for high strength and long life. They have the flexibility to have their height increased according to different needs.

North Melbourne began as a primarily residential location, servicing the urgent need for accommodation during the gold rush. By 1890, it had become the most densely populated region in the city. Industry related to transport, agricultural implement works, food production and distribution, formed a fringing crescent around the core to the east, south and west. The amount of overlap between residential and industrial areas increased in the twentieth century.

Small scale industrial redevelopment often located in the smaller streets, resulting in the removal of some residential use in the early twentieth century. Expanding industry and the lack of an adequate sewerage until the end of the nineteenth century saw North Melbourne fall from favour as a desirable residential address, probably earlier than in places like Carlton and Fitzroy. An appreciation for the location returned in the 1970s and has recently consolidated with industry leaving and a return to the more dense residential use that existed before 1890.

Family Box Beijing, China Architects: Crossboundaries Area: 2300 m² Year: 2016

Family Box functions both as an indoor playground and a kindergarten for children up to twelve years old, while accommodating their parents’ needs. It hosts different kinds of activities - from swimming, playing games to various classes ranging from music, dancing, crafting to cooking.

The rooms have their own program or theme, they all differ from the outside space in terms of color and furniture. At the same time, small square window openings allows maintaining contact with the outside, and parents can have a peep inside to see what is going on.

Ku.Be House of Culture in Movement is a cultural center in Danmark by ADEPT AND MVRDV. This is community center that blends theatre, sport and learning into a space where people’s body and mind are activated, it creates links between people.

Heritage is not just a monument that reminds us the history in the past. It interweaves the past, present and future.

• Young generation living around, more than 1500 people aged under 14 • 28% of residents aged between 25-34 – they may become young parents in the following years • 65% single, Multicultural precinct 41% born overseas - some of them may live along, not with their family – may suffer mental loneliness or have weak social contact

WEEK 05 SCHEMETIC DESIGN PRECEDENTS

The Youth Activity Center, Old Garment Factory Renovation Beijing, China Architects: REDe Architects + Moguang Studio Area: 5400 m² Year: 2020

The project site was originally a garment manufacturing factory covering an area of 5,000 sqm in Beizhuang Town.

Designers have retained the original layout of factory buildings, and renovated it into a youth activity center which is comprised of youth education camps along with classroom, restaurant, conference room, and accommodations.

The interior of the lobby is made up of seven inscribing semi-circular glass boxes, which function as the main entrance to the Youth Activity Center, the cafe area and the concept store of creative items, like continuous small settlements. Designers transformed a series of phenomena such as optical transparency, reflection and refraction into spatial experiences of physics. The continuous glass surface reflects the surrounding environment, making the structure lighter, and extending the view to other dimensions.

For the partition of the exhibition items, free-form surfaces are used to encourage expansion and interaction between the body and the space. The curved mesh wall and the net across different floors allow children to crawl among the gaps.

The abandoned canteen in the factory has been transformed into the hostel’s reception hall. Designers retained the mottled green paint wall skirt and fair-faced concrete prefabricated roof in the original building, and inserted stainless steel sanitary and storage modules, fair-faced concrete bar counters and stainless steel booths. The design strategy of combining exquisite workmanship with the mottled texture of the internal surface in the existing building, not only allows the new and old elements to coexist harmoniously without compromising their authenticity, but also creates a new kind of openness and richness in their interplay. “Emptiness” without functional limitation means “division of space”. The extremely thin thermally broken steel windows and doors allow maximum light and landscape to “flow” into the room, which also strengthen the proportional relationship between the openings and the wall.

Rather than having one large building, there will be many mini buildings inside the heritage factory, overall creating a kid’s city inside a building. The program will have many iconic elements of an actual city, scaled down to a smaller size, providing the different areas with character and atmosphere. It will create an experiential learning process for children as they re-imagining the urban fabric at a child’s scale.

The learning center will offer public facilities such as a science and technology museum and an indoor silo playground. The childcare program will face the kids living in the neighborhood.

Silo Playground The indoor silo playground sits in the front and is facing Laurens St. It contains 9 smaller silos which are 3m in diameter, and 4 larger ones which are 4m in diameter. On the lower level, the silos will be integrated with a shallow pool as a water playframe. On the upper level, climbing structures will be installed inside the silos and form a climbing playground.

SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY MUSEUM

At the back of the silo playground will be a STM and childcare. The museum sits under the childcare and is accessible from Laurens St entrance.

Science and Technology Museum Given that this is an underground exhibition space and won’t have much natural lighting, a mezzanine level will be added to make the museum more playful and explorative. The mezzanine platform will be accessed from a large staircase which is also a seating space.

The Urban Park Sitting next to the childcare and Learning center will be a large urban park, offering green and open spaces and tempt people from or outside the community to visit.

To get large open spaces for the urban park, parts of the roofs and the west façade of the single-story factory will be removed. Only parts of the original roof and steel column structures will be kept. These roofs will be turned into green roofs and skylights will be cut out to allow light penetration.

VERTICAL GARDEN

The Coworking Office Besides the two programs, a coworking space will be provided to people working on child pedagogy, serving the programs next door.

To bring life to the old red brick factory building, a steel trellis green wall will be installed on the west façade. Selected plants will grow up along the net structure, creating a vertical garden for all the levels. Although the coworking space is divided into two parts by the café on the 1st floor, each level will have all the necessary facilities such as flexible tables, meeting rooms, toilets, or dining space, and can be occupied by separate groups of people.
