NYU Bobst and other NYU Libraries You can visit and borrow materials from the Bobst Library and the Courant School of Mathematics Library using your student ID card. BOOKSTORE Once you have registered for classes, you will be able to find the required and recommended textbooks for your classes through the NYU bookstore website. POLYTECHNIC TUTORING CENTER The Polytechnic Tutoring Center (PTC), is dedicated to giving students the personalized attention they need to help them achieve their academic goals. Services are available to all students, free of charge. The PTC provides writing, reading and English language help in our Writing Center to undergraduate and graduate students at all levels.

COUNSELING NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s Counseling and Wellness Services (CWS) Center offers a variety of services to help students achieve their maximum potential both academically and professionally, as well as socially and emotionally. Consultation, counseling and psychotherapy are confidential and included as part of your registration fees, so there is no additional cost to you.

ON-CAMPUS EMPLOYMENT Graduate Assistantships Gain work experience in a professional setting while you earn your degree in one of our on-campus employment programs for graduate students.

As a graduate assistant, you can develop your professional skills while bolstering your credentials, bridging the gap between academia and the real world. Graduate students are actively involved with administrative and academic departmental support, such as general administration and clerical duties, advising, planning, maintenance and front desk positions.

Other Funding Opportunities Specific departments also award financial aid to graduate students in the form of teaching and research assistantships. Assistantships are available for PhD students with excellent academic credentials. Students receiving this award perform teaching duties in addition to supervised research by a faculty adviser.

Graduate students can also be awarded with research contracts and grants by individual faculty members. Graduate students also have the opportunity to work as a mentor for young students in the Center for K-12 STEM Education programs, promoting teamwork through engaging lessons involving building, programming, research, creative activities and hands-on experiment competitions.

SPIKE The Skill-Based Program for Incubator Knowledge and Employment (SPIKE) aims to support the companies developing in the NYU Tandon School of Engineering’s incubators while providing an opportunity for students to learn the skills necessary to find employment after completing their studies. Students will have the opportunity to directly impact the outcome of start-ups through diligent work and gain new skills that students would otherwise not be exposed to. Positions offered under this track are off campus at the DUMBO and Varick Street incubators.

ACADEMIC ADVISING AND REGISTRATION ACADEMIC ADVISING Prior to registration, students are required to meet their academic advisers to select classes for their first semester. Information regarding academic advising appointments will be provided prior to New Graduate Student Orientation. Before meeting with your academic adviser, you should: ■

REGISTRATION After meeting with your academic adviser, if you have no other holds on your student account, you can register online using NYU Albert.

You can access the list of course offerings and class schedules by logging on to the NYU Albert class schedule site at albert.nyu.edu/course-search.

If you uploaded your NYU card photo at photoid.nyu.edu ahead of time, you may pick it up at Orientation. Otherwise, once you have made your schedule, print out your Registration Receipt from NYU Albert and take it with a photo ID to the ID Office on the Brooklyn or Manhattan campuses. This is where you will receive your student ID card, which will allow you access to campus buildings and so much more.

Lastly, if you need to purchase your books, you can do so online at bookstores.nyu.edu.

OPTIONAL PROFESSIONAL TRAINING (OPT) AND CURRICULUM PRACTICAL TRAINING (CPT) OPT is a one-year work permit for international students who have completed their graduate degree in the US. ■ You have to find a job within 90 days of

that one year period after graduation.

■ You have to apply for an H1B visa while

in OPT. ■ CPT is work authorization for international

students that will allow them to do an internship.

■ CPT can be issued for various lengths of

time, from one semester up to one year.

■ The NYU Tandon School of Engineering

will allow international students to do an internship only after completing two semesters.

HEALTH AND IMMUNIZATION IMMUNIZATION In accordance with New York State law, all entering students must show proof of immunity against measles, mumps and rubella. The law prohibits the NYU Tandon School of Engineering from allowing any student to register for classes without documented proof of immunization against these diseases. Students must have the immunization form completed by the physician or health care provider who administered their vaccinations. Once completed, the Immunization Record should be submitted (via mail, fax or in-person) to:

HEALTH INSURANCE FOR US STUDENTS If you are enrolled for more than nine credits you will be automatically enrolled in the schoolsponsored health insurance plan. The cost of this insurance policy will be added to your student tuition account. This insurance option is required for students who do not have insurance, whose current family health coverage is about to expire, whose health insurance is with an HMO or restricted PPO out of the area, or are international students. If you are a US citizen or permanent resident and you have private insurance with comparable coverage, you can request to waive the school plan (applying for a waiver does not automatically waive you out of the plan).

You will be contacted by the insurance carrier if there are questions regarding your waiver.

NYU HEALTH CENTER Students have access to many services at the NYU Student Health Center (SHC). Students will be responsible for their co-pay, co-insurance and any portion of the bill not paid by the insurance company and SHCÂ service fees. The office visit co-pay will be requested at the time of service.

Students seeking care can walk in to the 3rd floor center without an appointment, but an additional $10 walk-in fee (not covered by the insurance plan) will be assessed.

CONDITIONAL ACCEPTANCE ABOUT CONDITIONAL ADMISSION Students who have been conditionally admitted are required to follow the conditions of their admission for course registration. Please refer to your admissions letter to verify any and all conditions that may have been placed on your admission. Additional information about particular conditional admissions is listed below.

English as a Second Language (ESL) Placement Exam Condition English proficiency is a requirement for admission to all graduate programs and is necessary for success at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering.

International students who receive this condition are admitted to a graduate degree program with the condition that they take the ESL Placement Exam and successfully complete English Language courses (if any) as required.

This condition is final, and students are strongly discouraged from contacting faculty to appeal their condition. Study at a previous English Language Center/School may not be applied toward a waiver of this condition, and retaking an English language exam after accepting a conditional offer of admission will not be cause for a waiver.

The ESL Placement Exam will be conducted during New Graduate Student Orientation (NGSO), and its result will be a placement level. This level will determine whether you are required to take full-time, part-time, or no ESL courses along with (or instead of) your graduate courses. ESL coursework does not count as quality points toward graduation and therefore is not included in the student’s Cumulative Grade Point Average.

Proof of Degree Completion Proof of Degree Completion conditional admission is given to students who at the time of their application have not yet completed their bachelor’s degree or did not submit original or official copies of all the required documents. REGISTRATION FOR STUDENTS WITH CONDITIONAL ADMISSION In a student’s first semester, registration will be facilitated during orientation. Students must sign in with the Office of Graduate Enrollment Management and Admissions and may have their student account hold temporarily lifted and then meet with their academic adviser before registering for classes online.

Note that students will not be permitted to enter the United States more than 30 days before the start date listed on their I-20 or DS-2019 form.

Admissions Condition Documents Students whose offer of admission was conditional should make plans before the start of the semester to fulfill those conditions. For many students, this will mean requesting that universities and/or testing agencies transmit official copies of transcripts and/ or test scores. It may also be necessary to bring final transcripts, mark sheets, or diplomas as Proof of Degree to satisfy other conditions, if you have not already done so.

Documents Keep your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, SEVIS fee receipt, admission letter, original academic records, medical and dental records, and any other important documents with you in your carry-on bags. Do not put important documents in your checked bags. Make backup copies of all your important documents and keep them with you, in a different place than your original documents.

Money We suggest you bring traveler’s checks, a credit card and/or a small amount of US dollars when you travel from your home country. This will allow you to have cash for food, transportation, hotel

and other services. We do not suggest that you bring significant amounts of currency of any kind with you on your journey to New York. It is highly recommended that you set up a bank account with an institution that has branch locations in New York City after arriving.

Clothing/Climate There are four seasons here. The summer (June– August) is hot with temperatures between 16-35°C or 61-95°F. During the winter (November–March), it can be very cold, with average temperatures between -3-11°C or 25-52°F. Be sure to pack some clothes for cold weather if you have them, and recall that there are shops near campus where you will be able to buy such items once you arrive.

Personal Items We encourage you to bring personal items (such as photographs and addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses for your family and friends) and cultural items (such as traditional clothing and recipes for your favorite foods) with you to New York. Other suggested items would be an international driver’s license, and marriage and birth certificates if you are coming with dependents.

ARRIVING IN NEW YORK CITY The NYU Tandon School of Engineering is located in New York City in the borough of Brooklyn and is convenient to all New York-area airports. International flights will either go to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), LaGuardia Airport (LGA) or Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New Jersey—just across the river.

In many cases, it is most convenient to take a taxi from the airport. The cost is approximately US $50. The taxi drivers are very familiar with the city. Have the driver take you to your residence hall, hotel or the hostel.

Be sure to use only official yellow or green New York City taxis.
