RENSSELAER POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE

THE NEW POLYTECHNIC For nearly 200 years, Rensselaer students have established an ethos of innovation for the greater good. Today, we recognize that many global issues are so great, they can no longer be adequately addressed by even the most talented person working alone. “The New Polytechnic” refers to an emerging paradigm for higher education in which students and faculty across our five disciplines spark creative solutions to the key challenges of our time—from national security to climate change, and beyond. More than an approach to learning, The New Polytechnic is designed to expand your vision of what’s possible and prepare you to make a global impact. Let’s get started.

INTRODUCTION

Unparalleled Achievement “Why not change the world?” is not just a tagline; it is our way of life. Since 1824, our students have been pushed to dream big and take chances. Join a legacy of innovators that includes a Nobel laureate, a NASA deputy administrator, an NFL head coach, and the creators of the Ferris wheel and the digital camera—to name a few. How will you leave your mark?

Our Thinkers and Doers

Austin Miller “The research opportunities have been amazing,” says Austin, a biochemistry and biophysics major. Thanks to the hands-on work he has taken on—such as engineering E. coli for more efficient production of biofuels and other valuable chemicals—he is well-prepared for life after Rensselaer.

Cara Porto An architecture major, Cara receives immense support from faculty and students in her department and benefits from interactions outside her discipline as well. In the Integrated Design Development Studio, she collaborates with engineering students on alternative building media, such as sugar-based structures (pictured above).

STUDENT PROFILES

Henry Chickering As a mechanical engineering major and member of Rensselaer Motorsport, Henry combines his interest in fabrication and machining with a passion for engineering and design. He loves being part of a team and applying academic knowledge in a real-world setting. His advice to incoming students: “Buckle in and prepare for a challenging educational experience.”

Shelby McCarthy “It’s all about collaboration,” says Shelby, a sustainability studies major, praising the interconnected atmosphere at Rensselaer. She recently worked on Design Your Future Day, an event that brought female high school students to campus to learn more about STEM majors and careers.

Research Highlights The Future of Energy A locus of research on everything from renewable energy to grid resiliency, and much more, Rensselaer’s Center for Future Energy Systems was recently selected to receive a $9 million state grant, re-designating it as part of the New York State Center for Advanced Technology Program.

Engineering the Body Tyler Graf ’17 and Jennifer Vincent ’19 sought to eliminate the need for organ donations by developing ways to create organs outside the body. Their research involved finding a material compliant enough to mimic arterial tissue for creating man-made tissue grafts.

Dark(est) Matter Nanophotonics expert and Rensselaer physics professor Shawn-Yu Lin earned the 2016 Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Nanotechnology Council Pioneer Award for his discovery of the darkest material on Earth—a thin coating comprised of low-density arrays of loosely vertically aligned carbon nanotubes.

To expand your mind in preparation for an exciting career, consider pursuing a minor in one of our world-renowned graduate research programs: architectural acoustics, lighting, and built ecologies. Building with Water Bottles Powerful hurricanes and earthquakes have devastated areas in the U.S. and around the world in recent years. When this happens, first responders and aid organizations mobilize to help communities in need. Bottled water is sent by the tons, but all too often, the empty plastic bottles end up in the trash stream. The need to address this problem is what spurred a recent collaboration between students and faculty in the Schools of Engineering and Architecture. Their goal was to reuse empty water bottles to construct and test different structural components (walls, columns, roofs), then design and build a prototype for emergency shelters for displaced populations under conditions of distress. The resulting structure was displayed in Brooklyn’s Industry City for the May 2018 WantedDesign event. On a broader scale, this unique project fostered an important dialogue on sustainable building construction and the recycling of industrial products.

Bedford Seminar Merging architecture and engineering, this interdisciplinary initiative studio course provides an ideal educational setting to address the increasing complexity and rising expectations concerning building design performance. Connect with internationally renowned engineers as invaluable mentors in the following coursework: • upper-level interdisciplinary design studio • upper-level interdisciplinary seminar • international traveling workshop B.Arch. applicants are required to submit a full creative portfolio. Ylonka Machado An ITWS major, Ylonka appreciates having the ability to tailor her college experience to her own interests and goals. “There’s a big focus on developing business skills and technical skills,” she says. She maintains an active presence on campus, serving as president of ITWS Student Leadership, a mentor in the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and web coordinator for the Women at Rensselaer Mentor Program.

The Information Technology and Web Science (ITWS) program allows you to align an IT, web science, business, and computer science education with the discipline of your choice. You will be empowered to think creatively and work collaboratively in an increasingly data-driven field, and graduate with one of the most sought-after skill sets in the job market. Rensselaer currently offers a B.S. in Information Technology and Web Science and an M.S. in Information Technology. Choose a concentration from a number of areas, including data science and analytics, management information systems, information security, human computer interaction, web technologies, cognitive science, medicine, finance, and more. Or, with the help of an adviser, create a concentration all your own that reflects your individual interests.

Data Dexterity Rensselaer is the first school in the nation to have an institution-wide “data dexterity” requirement. With it, you will propel beyond the current collegiate standard of “data literacy” to “data dexterity”— proficiency in using diverse datasets to define and solve complex real-world problems. The skill set is critical to becoming a leader in your field, whatever that may be. A 2017 market analysis from the Business Higher Education Forum calls for annual job openings for data science and analytics roles to rise steadily to 2.72 million postings in 2020.

Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students College is a time of significant transformation. With Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students (CLASS), we make that transition as seamless as possible and help you develop into a well-rounded person. To ensure that you are part of a strong community starting in your first year, CLASS programming connects you to ongoing support through a network of faculty, staff, and other students. We also offer an integrated system of services and events, residential clustering, and class-year-based experiences.

STUDENT LIFE

Residence Halls Our clustered-living approach makes for a robust residential community. Most first-year students live in freshman-only residence halls, while junior and senior students can live on or off campus. We have several unique, learning-based living options available to foster community and civic engagement, such as Design and Arts Housing (DArts), which typically appeals to Architecture, EART, EMAC, GSAS, or DIS students, or Leadership House, which offers exclusive workshops throughout the year on topics such as decision making and team building.

Dining Options The range of dining options offered on campus reflects the diversity and spirit of the university. Within each of the four resident dining halls, a number of entrées are available at each meal, along with generous deli and grill choices that are prepared to order. Vegan, vegetarian, kosher, halal, and organic options are available. Add Flex Dollars to your meal plan to take advantage of retail outlets on campus, like Jazzman’s Café, Panera Bread, and Ben & Jerry’s.

Student Union As an undergraduate, you will automatically become a member of our Union, a student-run body that controls, finances, and organizes student activities, as well as a number of on-campus retail operations. Community service is an important value embraced by the Union, with efforts ranging from raking leaves in Troy on Earth Day to participating in Rensselaer’s Relay for Life.
