INTEGRATED DESIGN & MEDIA MASTER’S PROGRAM
GRADUATE PROGRAM MS IN INTEGRATED DESIGN & MEDIA The Master of Science in Integrated Design & Media (IDM) program combines critical inquiry and rigor with creative practice, using new and emerging tools and techniques to explore the social, cultural, and ethical potentials of emerging media technologies. Working at the intersection of technology, culture, and society, you will explore a spectrum of creative practices including: Physical computing
Extended reality
Computational art and design
Motion capture and performance art
Game development
Ecological and bio-design
Interaction design
Experiential design
Human-computer interfaces
Creative machine learning
LEARN TO INNOVATE IN A PROGRAM TAILORED TO YOUR INTERESTS The IDM curriculum emphasizes the development of skills applicable to a broad spectrum of media through individual and collaborative work. Visiting scholars and practitioners, workshops, special events, and projects with industry partners supplement our courses and maximize students’ personal contact with leaders in various sectors, including the arts, advocacy, service, entertainment, and education. This blend of theory and practice defines our program. It’s what we mean by “integrated”—the powerful combination of emerging media and technology, creative mastery, and critical thinking. Our faculty include leading artists, designers, developers, and researchers who passionately engage in professional work at the intersection of engineering and creative practice in emerging media and design.

FACILITIES, SPACES, & GLOBAL OPPORTUNITIES Faculty and students are anchored in NYU’s emerging media building at 370 Jay Street on our Downtown Brooklyn campus. Schools from across the University, including Tisch School of the Arts and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development, share the building with IDM and other programs from Tandon, concentrating the University’s emerging media programs under one roof. Occupying the third floor of this remarkable new facility, IDM houses a number of specialty labs and studios for students, including an experimental print studio, low-power lab, wearables studio, shared public studios for students, spaces for fabrication and installation, and the Ability Project. These are complemented by an on-campus motion capture studio and sound studio, as well as other media facilities in the downtown Brooklyn area. NYU Tandon @ The Yard is an emerging media production facility within the Brooklyn Navy Yard that creates opportunities to leverage NYU Tandon’s expertise with industry and media partners around the country, advancing integrative research in areas such as AR/VR/ XR and virtual production. Tandon @ The Yard’s facilities include a motion capture studio, an LED wall for virtual production, volumetric capture rigs, and spatial computing.
IDM graduate students may also elect to spend a semester in the Practice Research Experience Program at the Technical University of Munich. This option involves pursuing an internship for credit while studying at NYU Berlin before returning to New York to complete their degree.

RESEARCH AND OUTREACH Our faculty include leading artists, designers, and scholars who passionately engage in creative practice and research at the intersections of multiple disciplines: art and engineering, design and philosophy, and music and computation. Their work embodies hybridity and syncretism, emphasizing innovation through the integration of disciplines and practices. The Ability Project supports research in clientcentered, assistive technology and adaptive design for people with disabilities, and supports coursework in human-centered design. The Laboratory for Living Interfaces studies the interaction of organisms and their environment through scientific and design enquiries, while the Low Power Lab is a research lab focused on climate-resilient, rugged, and low-power computing for community-owned solutions, infrastructure, and services. Several of our faculty work on issues of ecology, sustainability, and the interaction between the natural world and built environment. The Design Lab and Soft Lab are IDM’s in-house space for working with electronics, 3D printing, desktop CNC, and other rapid prototyping and fabrication technologies. It supports courses and faculty work in wearable computing, e-textiles, tangible games, interactive environments, and installations. The Audio Lab at 2 Metrotech fosters research around synthesizers and other topics related to the design of music technologies, as well as supporting composers, musicians, sound artists, scholars, and designers working with synthesizers and other technologies related to sound. Several of our faculty who also teach in the Department of Technology, Culture, and Society produce scholarship on technology and design ethics and politics, including feminist and decolonial perspectives; media archaeologies and histories, including the history of haptics; and research and theory in art, media, and design.

MICHAEL CONEY Integrated Digital Media, MS ’24 Michael Coney is employed at Walt Disney Imagineering, developing new technology for live entertainment. His work merges narrative environments, emerging technologies, and digital media to create immersive, location-based experiences and bring story worlds to life. Michael was named one of the Top Nine Young Professionals in AV by System Contractor News for 2024.
KATHLEEN MCDERMOTT Industry Associate Professor Kathleen McDermott is an interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and technology designer with a focus on open source hardware and its intersection with the body. Her artwork merges electronics design with sculpture, wearables, performance, and video to critique, examine, and provide alternative models of life with ubiquitous computing technologies. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Museum of Art and Design in New York, and featured in publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, Fast Company, and Dezeen. With support from the National Science Foundation, she has developed Dancebits, a tool kit for prototyping light-up wearable costumes, and regularly works with IDM students to produce creative tech content for educational contexts.
