A MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR Dear Colleague, Southern Utah University is filled with tenacious faculty and staff who actively engage in sponsored programs spanning externally funded research, academic and institutional support, instruction, public service, and scholarship projects. It is an honor to serve your endeavors. In an effort to keep up with your ambitions, our office is constantly learning, stretching, and growing. We know grantsmanship can be intimidating and exhausting. It’s a world filled with myriads of regulations and its own language. However, we are research administrators and we are good at what we do. We love taking on these challenges and turning them into enjoyable, fulfilling highlights of your career. Sylvia was born in Moab, Utah and raised in the red rocks of Southern Utah. As the SPARC Director and having earned her Master's degree in Research Administration from John Hopkins University, Sylvia is happiest when learning. However, that happiness is definitely multiplied when surrounded by the cool mountain air, aspen leaves, pine trees, and— of course—her family!

Jenn grew up in Arizona where she obtained her undergraduate degree in English. She recently went back to school and earned a master's degree in technical writing and digital rhetoric, graduating Nota bene with a 4.0 GPA. Jenn enjoys learning Jenn Stewart something new every day Research Administrator and finds her pre-award position at SUU the perfect fit with her (Remote Online) interests and skills. jennstewart@suu.edu

Carrie joined the SPARC office in April of 2020 after six years in Accounting Services. As such, she speaks fluent "Banner". Her undergrad degree in accounting and Master's in Business Administration are both from SUU. When she's not tinkering with Excel, you'll find her with her family (preferably exploring the outdoors by boot, jeep or boat), in her kitchen trying out a new recipe, or curled up with a good book.

Bobbie has been a research administrator for over 35 years. In this capacity, she has served four different universities (U of U, NAU, DSU, & now SUU). She is semi-retired and enjoys her continued involvement in this field. Bobbie is the mother of Bobbie Ursin two and grandmother to five grandchildren. She Research Administrator has always been selfconscious about her short stature — but we all (Remote Online) know good things come bobbieursin@suu.edu in small packages.
Katie spent four years as a post-award intern for SPARC and the last year as a part time Special Projects Coordinator. As such, she played an integral part in SPARC's past. Katie graduated from SUU last April with a degree in Nutrition and Spanish. She has recently started a new full time position with our office as a Research Administrator. For fun, Katie likes to play pickle ball, enjoy the outdoors.
Lawrence is from the beautiful city of Cape Town, South Africa, where he attended Pinelands High School. He is currently a junior studying theater arts and music education here at SUU. Lawrence enjoys serving others. He plays the piano, sings, and Lawrence Mbaki loves spending time SPARC Student Liasion hiking and camping in the outdoors. He also loves 435.865.7824 (office) languages and is Bennion Admin Bldg currently learning #312 Japanese, Portuguese sparcpre@suu.edu and Spanish.

Carson is a sophomore from Layton, Utah. He graduated from Layton High School and was President of the Key Club. Carson also received the Bronze Presidential Youth Service Award for completing 100 hours of service in 2018. He is fluent in Spanish and is a philosophy major with his sights on law school. His passions include serving others, enjoying food, and (of course) being a T-Bird.

Fiscal Year 21 (FY21) represents increasing interest and utilization of the SPARC office. With an increase in number of submissions by 59% and increase in dollar amount requested by 127%, FY21 was the highest amount of submissions and awards to date. While $32 million of that total was accounted for by HEERF, these funds were successfully managed along with the normal flow of submissions and award management. The federal government was the largest source for both submissions and awards, with sponsors varying from several federal agencies.

Subawards A subaward is when a portion of SUU's sponsored project is passed through to another entity in order to complete a portion of the sponsored project's scope of work. Here are all of the new awards SUU received with subawards during Fiscal Year 21. Subawards require additional management for the PI, department and the SPARC office. SPARC will typically draft the agreement to send to the subawardee(s). The PI and their respective department are in constant communication with the subawardee(s) and help verify that deliverables are being met. Addition of a subaward can add value to the project and can increase the overall impact of the project.

Award Management System During Fiscal Year 21, SPARC started implementing the use of the SmartGrant Award Management system.
Through the SmartGrant system PI's, and their departmental administrative support can: - Monitor and manage awards Review expenses/spending Look at upcoming deliverables See a summary of the key award information - Submit proposals through "system-to-system" process - Send documents attachments directly to the award/proposal - And more! Many PI's and administrative support personnel have already started utilizing the tools in SmartGrant. Expenditures Expenditures tend to be the best representation of the efforts put forth by the SPARC office and by the grant personnel. In Fiscal Year 21, our largest category was Scholarships/Financial aid due to the large amount of funding from HEERF awards used for student financial aid. Other categories remained consistent between FY20 and FY21. Personnel costs (salaries, wages, fringe benefits), current expense and travel tend to be the highest spending categories. FY 20 had a total of $14,946,505 for expenditures, with ~$8 million more being expended in FY21.

Did you know the impact of Sponsored Programs on scholarships given directly to SUU students? Through sponsored programs, there was ~6 million dollars given to students in financial aid and scholarships during Fiscal Year 21. In addition to this, scholarships are also funded via indirect cost recovery, in which 100 % of the indirect costs for certain programs are recovered and distributed to the University Scholarship Fund for use of scholarships across the University. In FY21, $743,404 were distributed from indirect recovery of these projects. The following programs have 100% of their recovered indirect costs distributed to the University Scholarship Fund:

Academic Colleges Awards by College Many of our academic colleges received and engaged in activities with grant funding during Fiscal Year 21.
PROJECTS ACROSS CAMPUS & BEYOND Funding received went to a variety of colleges across campus for an even larger variety of projects. Nearly 50 of our current Principal Investigators are part of an academic college.

Alumni & Community Relations
FUNDING TO HELP THE STUDENTS, UNIVERSITY & COMMUNITY The uniqueness of the awards that come from Alumni & Community Relations stem from the variety of its departments. A large portion of this funding is used for programs oriented towards helping current and future students. Additionally, many projects within this division are utilized to better the community through instruction, public service and outreach.

Office of the President/VP Finance (USF/SUMA) The Utah Shakespeare Festival (USF) and Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) also have several awards. Many of the funds come from state and private entities. These efforts in obtaining sponsored projects provide a large benefit to the institution and the arts.

Finance - HEERF
Through the implementation of CARES, CRRSA, ARPA, the university received funding from the Department of Education through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF). HEERF awards received during FY21 includes funding directly from the federal government, as well as federal flow-through funds. Federal funds were used to benefit students and the institution to help with the effects of COVID-19 and other emergency relief.
Background on Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) In response to the hardships faced by Higher Education Institutions from COVID-19, the U.S. Department of Education has authorized 3 different acts: Coronavirus Aid, Recovery, and Economic Security (CARES) Act; Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA); American Rescue Plan (ARP). The purpose of these funds was to support students and institutions of higher education and aid in providing resources to recover from the impacts of the pandemic. Student Affairs Awards received by student affairs come back to the primary focus of the institution: the students. Each project or program has a unique way of helping disadvantaged students and supporting them through VP their educational journey. While awards received may only be a small portion of what they do, each program & project is a priceless help for many students.
