Crocosmia 'Hell Raiser'

THE BRESSINGHAM GARDENS

Welcome to the The Bressingham Gardens Spring and Summer Catalogue 2025. We are unfortunately slightly later than planned but given the recent unfavourable gardening weather and particularly cold nights this edition should reach you just as the weather turns a bit more spring like and we can all think about getting planting in the garden ready for the season ahead.

After the dreadful early onset of winter in December 2022 where we lost about 35% of all of our stock particularly Crocosmia’s where we lost 90% of all varieties including many new Bressingham selections. We are pleased to announce that we have now sufficiently rebuilt our stocks to be able to offer you four outstanding new Crocosmia’s bred by Jaime Blake and trialled for many years in the Dell Garden to ensure they meet our strict criteria for garden worthiness and performance. Offered here in the catalogue totally exclusively to our Bressingham Gardens customers these magnificent cultivars will add a stunning array of late summer colour to your gardens.

Amongst many other new varieties to the catalogue is a tremendous recent selection named Helenium ‘Moth’ which according to David Warden, the UK National Collection holder for the genus is in his top five Helenium’s of all time, a judgement we cannot disagree with. It has performed very well in the RHS Helenium trials at Bridgewater and is a very likely candidate for the prestigious Award of Garden Merit. Also included in his top five is Helenium ‘El Dorado’ which we also offer for the first time in this catalogue.

Just to briefly mention a few other new additions to this year’s catalogue starting with Helenium ‘Ragamuffin’ a robust and really vibrant orange and red cultivar. Helenium ‘Ruby Tuesday’ a shorter and very compact selection with deep ruby red starry flowers. Hemerocallis ‘Mallard’ which in our opinion is one of the finest deep red you’ll find. Two excellent Paeonia’s, firstly ‘Illini Belle’ with the most intense deep blood semi double red flowers, and ‘Coral Sunset’ widely regarded as the best of all of the coral coloured hybrids. Salvia x sylvestris ‘Rianne’ is a diminutive’ compact cultivar with intensely deep blue flower spikes, ideal for the front of border or patio container. Salvia nemorosa ‘Caradonna Pink Inspiration’ with a very similar habit to the ever popular ‘Caradonna’ but with vibrant rosy pink flower spikes.

Anyway this hopefully gives you a flavour of some of the wonderful perennials we have available in the catalogue this year all of which are now grown in a minimum of 50-75% peat free and we are well on target for being totally peat free from 2026. All you need to do is click the name of the plant in the catalogue flip book and it will take you to the website shop where you can order and put into your basket. Some plants will state on the website delivery after April 1st due to the cold weather.

Happy Gardening from all at The Bressingham Gardens Team

Please note that a few plants in the catalogue have been marked on the webpage for delivery after April 1st so orders with these plants will be held for despatch after that date

Exclusive first release NEW introductions

Crocosmia 'Joyce Durdy'

A very distinctive selection by Jaime Blake and under many years of trial in the garden has never failed to wow us and visitors to the gardens alike and we are now pleased to be able to exclusively offer this magnificent cultivar for sale for the first time. Forms a dense, vase shaped clump of stems and leaves with very floriferous, upward facing flowers that have a very deep, intense orange colouration. They are also suffused with an underlying pink, which very satisfyingly intensifies as the flowers age. The flowers also have a darker central flash, creating a starry effect where they meet. With such a tremendous performer it is only befitting that Jaime and the family have decided to name this in honour and tribute to a remarkable lady Joyce Durdy, who is the sister of Alan Bloom's wife Flora and who has, just this March reached the astonishing milestone of 100 years old.
