WELCOME As the Chair of the SPA, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to #SPANC19 in my home city of York!

This year’s conference is the biggest ever and one of the best in terms of the speakers. I hope you can take the opportunity to listen and learn from them.

You all have the potential to go on and run newspapers and magazines and the connections you make here will stand you in fantastic stead if you choose to go into the media.

The quality of award nominations was astonishingly high and every one of the shortlisted entries should be justifiably proud, as should all of those who entered the awards.

It has been a fantastic year to lead the SPA as we have moved towards becoming a fully-fledged charity, making reforms to support and champion student journalists.

Nouse is York’s oldest student group and premier student newspaper, established in 1964 and produced exclusively by students alongside their studies.

We are delighted to host you on our campus for a fantastic weekend of workshops, talks, socialising, networking opportunities, and, of course, the awards night.

what is the spa?

In short, we’re a non-profit organisation organisation to help support, train and award student journalists.

The SPA was set up six years ago at Southampton University and has now grown to 130 member publications across the four UK nations and the Republic of Ireland.

It’s free to join and entirely run by volunteers - a mix of current students and those recently graduated, all working in journalism or other media industries.

We’re here for when you when you need advice on dealing with your union or university, such as a censorship issue or facing funding cuts, giving advice on setting up a new independent publication, or looking for ideas to engage new readers and writers.

Our Facebook group is a useful resource as a massive collection of lovely student publication types all very helpful when it comes to other queries, such as printing costs, freedom of information requests and jobs or internships.

There’s even a mentorship scheme to connect you with other people working in the specific parts of the profession you’re interested in getting in to.

We also run both our regional and national awards, both of which have produced winners who have gone on to work with some of the biggest journalism organisations in the industry.

We also celebrate your work with our Splash Sunday series showcasing the best student publication front pages, and run Training Tuesday posts with specific training materials.

As well as supporting, training and awarding student journalists, we are also a helpful network who all know the trials and tribulations of producing content for campuses.

So whether you’re just looking at creating a new section in your newspaper, or something bigger, we want to facilitate helping you.

We know our industry needs to change a lot more for the better, so want to play our part in making sure that happens sooner rather than later.

We’re always striving to make our output more diverse and reflective of society-at-large rather than mirroring the old-fashioned images of journalism, so join us by getting involved with the SPA for the rest of this academic year, or talking about us to your incoming editorial team before the next one!

annual general meeting Like all good organisations, we need a bit of housekeeping and tidy-up every once in a while.

As a body which is driven by our members, the AGM is your chance to have your say, or take a bigger role in helping to run it during the next 12 months.

We’ll be holding elections for our five committee members, as well as voting on policies. The five positions up for grabs are Chair, Development Officer, Membership & Communications Officer, Marketing Officer, and Digital Media Officer.

You don’t need any prior SPA experience or to have written a manifesto - just turn up to our Annual General Meeting on Saturday with a bunch of enthusiasm for helping other student journalists.

How the elections work: All delegates are welcome to stand for a position by raising their hand when the returning officer asks for nominations.

Candidates just need to give a quick summary, of no more than two minutes, of what they would do in the role. Members then ask questions.

The candidates leave the room for the vote. Each publication gets one vote, so must decide how they want to cast their vote together.

The votes are counted and the person with the most highest number gets the role. Candidates can stand for as many positions as they like.

MEET THE TEAM The SPA is a small team run by a dedicated group of volunteers, usually people working at student papers, or those already in the wider world of journalism.

We’re made up of executive committee of five people, who oversee the day to day running of the organisation. A board of trustees helps with oversight and governance. The details of our regional officers can be found online.
