CONNECTING
artists & audiences since 1966
Performing Arts Houston connects audiences with national and global touring artists, exploring a wide range of artistic genres. Each year, the organization presents full seasons of performances in the Theater District and throughout the city. Beyond the stage, the non-profit collaborates with artists, schools, and community partners to create engagement programs for all ages, including masterclasses, workshops, classroom programs, student matinees, and performance opportunities. Since 2020, we have supported new works by local artists through the Houston Artist Commissioning Project. Founded in 1966, Performing Arts Houston has presented many of the most popular, celebrated, and culturally significant artists of our time.

Introducing the Global Voices Music Series
by Catherine Huang
No need for a passport—we’re bringing the world to you. Thanks to the generous support of The Elkins Foundation, artists are crossing oceans and continents to join Performing Arts Houston’s first Global Voices Music Series. They come from different backgrounds and artistic traditions, but they share an important common thread: they're phenomenal musicians, connecting with audiences in amazing and unforgettable ways.
AIDA CUEVAS: THE QUEEN OF MARIACHI

ABA DIOP TRIO
FRI, SEP 20
CULLEN THEATER, WORTHAM CENTER
The beat tells a story
The percussion sounds of saber drums are really a language. Using call-and-response codes from thousands of years of oral tradition, the beat communicates messages of healing and praise. The Aba Diop Trio (Aba Diop, Noumoucounda Cissoko, and Jason Hosier) transmits a wholly new genre of West African sabar fusion music, featuring the propulsive rhythms of Diop’s sabar drum percussion, the dulcet tones of Cissoko’s kora (a 21-stringed double-bridged African harplute), and the elastic fluidity of Hosier’s jazzy, meditative guitar riffs. The overall effect is a mesmerizing amalgam, tethered to an ancient impulse while offering a current—and deeply listenable—reflection of our shared humanity.
Celebrating the timeless music of Juan Gabriel
Known as “The Queen of Mariachi,” Aida Cuevas is an esteemed figure in Mexico. Beloved for her unwavering devotion to traditional mariachi music and for her mastery of its demanding vocal forms, Cuevas has built a legendary career spanning nearly half a century. For her latest tour, the GRAMMY and Latin GRAMMY-winning icon presents a mariachi spectacle celebrating Mexico’s bestselling artist of all time, Juan Gabriel. It’s a winning combination featuring Cuevas’ stunning voice performing beloved hits like "Te Lo Pido Por Favor," "Te Sigo Amando," "La Diferencia," and more.
ANOUSHKA SHANKAR
WED, MAR 19
CULLEN THEATER, WORTHAM CENTER
Celebrating 30 Years
Anoushka Shankar began studying the sitar and Indian classical music at age 9 under the intensive instruction of her father, Pandit Ravi Shankar. Since making her professional debut at age 13, Anoushka has traveled the world, playing in venues ranging from legendary jazz cafes and iconic symphony halls to festival stages in front of 40,000 people. No matter where she performs, these events transform into intimate experiences for every listener. Now, celebrating the 30th anniversary of sharing music with the world, Shankar carves out new sounds from her forthcoming album, Chapter III (Untitled), coming in March 2025, as well as reinterpreted gems from her long-celebrated career.

Limits don’t apply
For the Kodō Drummers of Japan, dedication to taiko drumming is total. Joining the group begins with a twoyear apprenticeship isolated in the mountains of Japan, making a one-pointed effort to achieve levels of artistry beyond the norm. Preparing mind and body for the work ahead means no electronics, no alcohol, growing and cooking their own food, sewing their own clothes, learning trades, continuous practice—and running. “We’d get up at 5 am. We’d run down the mountain. We’d run by the beach. It’s probably something like five miles, six miles,” says Kodō Drummer Leo Ikenaga. “We’d do that every day.” Each member shares this training, connecting deeply with the rhythms they play and with each other. For audiences, that translates into an experience like no other.
LADYSMITH BLACK MAMBAZO
TUE, APR 1
JONES HALL
“But you LOVE Ladysmith Black Mambazo.” — Mean Girls
Assembled in the early ‘60s by Joseph Shabalala, then a farmer turned factory worker, the South African singing group took the name Ladysmith Black Mambazo: Ladysmith, the name of Joseph’s hometown, about three hours west of Durban and three hours east of Johannesburg; Black, a reference to the oxen, the strongest of all farm animals; and Mambazo being the Zulu word for chopping axe, a symbol of the group’s ability to “chop down” any singing rival who might challenge them. Their collective voices were so tight, their harmonies so polished, by the end of the decade, they were banned from competition, although welcomed to join as entertainers. Over the last 60 years, their voices have conquered the world, earning five GRAMMY Awards and 17 nominations, collaborating with artists like Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, Michael Jackson, and Paul Simon (including his landmark album Graceland), plus countless film and TV appearances (including Mean Girls).
GET INVOLVED!
In addition to putting over 40 performances on stage this season, our Education and Community Engagement department will work alongside our touring and local artists to create once in a lifetime opportunities for students, lifelong learners, and arts enthusiasts to get close to the art.
Get excited for master classes with world renowned dance companies, workshops led by cutting edge musicians, post-show Westwood Trust Creative Chats and Q&As, and so much more. Be sure to check out the Education and Community page on our website to see masterclass, workshop, and Creative Chat offerings throughout the season.
Volunteer with us!

VIP TREATMENT
Performing Arts Houston Visionary members, Board members, and distinguished guests enjoyed multiple parties this past spring with artists and crews of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, and the 2024 New/Now: The Houston Artist Commissioning Project following their performances.
On April 6th, hundreds of supporters came together in the Wortham Center Grand Foyer to celebrate and support Performing Arts Houston’s performances and education programs at the annual Kaleidoscope Ball. Chaired by Kristin and Lance Reynolds, the Mariposas de Guadalajara theme celebrated the beauty and culture of Guadalajara and the state of Jalisco, the birthplace of mariachi music and tequila.
The record-setting event honored longtime patron Jesse H. Jones II and his family, and included multiple performances, silent and live auctions, a tequila raffle, and dancing at the After-Party past midnight.
To learn more about memberships and perks like Cast Party invitations, or the annual Kaleidoscope Ball, visit performingartshouston.org/support.

New work: Last Day, County Fair
Chavez is a Latin American recording artist, actor, composer, and musician, best known for his breakout role in the Broadway National Tour of Disney’s Aladdin . His newest composition celebrates and explores the act of becoming oneself, in the midst of all that life delivers.

New work: On Different Paths
Simon immigrated to the U.S. in 1987 to study jazz and develop a career as a performer, composer, and music educator. He thinks of music as something that has the power to unite people. His latest work strikes a balance between the clarity of classical music and spontaneity of jazz to convey unity in our city today.
