GROUP CEO'S MESSAGE

DEAR VALUED GUESTS, It’s been a long 42 years since we took flight as Malaysian Airline System (MAS) in October 1972. 42 years of proudly serving Malaysian Hospitality to millions of guests around the world. 42 years of connecting Malaysia to the world. When you trace our history back even further, our very first commercial flight operated 77 years ago as Malayan Airways Limited. We were deeply honoured when the Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak described Malaysia Airlines as a national icon. Indeed for many Malaysians, the memory of our first flight on our first holiday overseas, or of the journey home after months, perhaps years, away at university abroad, still holds clear and dear. Fast forward to today, and it is time for change. Malaysia Airlines is changing, for the better. You might have heard recent

corporate news that our carrier’s majority shareholder is leading a comprehensive restructuring exercise. Why? In the words of our Prime Minister, “MAS is a part of Malaysia’s history. It is a symbol of national pride, of our ambitions and our place in the world. It is more than just a company to us. So today, we are making changes to ensure it is also part of Malaysia’s future story.” Exciting times lie ahead for this national icon, and for you, our guest. We thank you for your support all this while, and look forward to serving you and flying you on more holidays and business trips well into the future. Warmest regards, AHMAD JAUHARI YAHYA Group Chief Executive Officer

PROFILE

EXCLUSIVE MENU

Malaysia Airlines has partnered with Malaysian-born Australian artist Poh Ling Yeow to create a Signature Dish for the airline. The star of her own cooking show Poh’s Kitchen, she shares her thoughts with Going Places on Malaysian cuisine and why she chose to showcase her Nyonya Chicken Curry.

Why did you choose Nyonya Chicken Curry With Roti Canai as your Malaysia Airlines Signature Dish?

It’s such a definitive Malaysian dish and a definite crowd pleaser. Curry chicken is so loved in my family that it has a permanent, albeit out-of-place position, next to the ham on the Christmas table every year! Why are you so passionate about Malaysian cuisine?

Because the fusion of Malay, Indian and Chinese cultures creates such an incredibly diverse, vibrant and unique cuisine unlike no other in the world. It’s also a very unpretentious, inclusive food culture – there’s no such thing as an in-crowd and the food is amazingly cheap, so everyone can afford to eat out. Which ingredient is an absolute must in your kitchen?

Pandan. The heady aroma of grassy jasmine that this leaf imparts into food is totally unique and very versatile. Dubbed South East Asian vanilla, it’s used as a staple in sticky Malaysian desserts (perfect with coconut and palm sugar) but is equally delicious in savoury food. Throw into rice to accentuate the jasmine perfume or into curries to add another complex layer of fragrance. A whiff of this is pure comfort for me. Which is your favourite restaurant in Malaysia?

I rarely go to restaurants because the street food is so exciting. I always make a beeline for an assam laksa vendor the minute I land! And which is your go-to Malaysian restaurant in Australia?

PappaRich because there’s so much choice. It’s fun, tasty, fast and cheap – everything hawker food is about. Poh’s Nyonya Chicken Curry with Roti Canai will be available to Business Class passengers as well as Economy Class passengers on all flights leaving Australia from 1 Dec 2014, and on all flights leaving New Zealand from 1 Jan 2015.

MH GOURMET

BEST MEAL Malaysia Airlines’ in-flight dish of grilled lamb chops with olive and sundried tomato gravy was recently voted one of the six knockout economy class meals by the Business Traveller magazine. The dish is one of several in the MHgourmet menu, an innovative service for which 86 percent of the passengers surveyed have rated as good or excellent.

RE-BRANDING

NEW DISHES Beginning this month, the rebranded MHindulge menu will be rolled out across all routes in the Malaysia Airlines network, for First Class and Business Class. The re-branding comes with new menu choices, which include Western and Asian dishes such as noisette of chicken, beef kouzi, chicken murtabak, and grilled sea bass fillet, among others. PARTNERSHIP

ADDED VALUE Malaysia Airlines’ frequent flyer programme, Enrich, has partnered with Rocketmiles to enable Enrich members to earn thousands of Enrich Miles for each night booked with participating hotels represented by Rocketmiles. With each booking valued at an average of 7,000 Enrich Miles, members can now earn about 10 to 20 times more than the typical incentive.

15 MINS WITH …

CELEBRITY VISIT It can only be an act of serendipity. Ipohborn, UK-based MasterChef UK 2014 winner Catherine Chin Wan Ping Coombes was three weeks shy of going back to work after her maternity leave when she was suddenly made redundant. Out of work, a friend decided to enter her for the popular TV cooking competition, and now, slightly over a year later, the former hotel manager is doing whirlwind around-the-world tours as a celebrity chef. Recently back in Malaysia as ambassador for the UK’s GREAT campaign celebrating British food and drinks, Ping Coombes spoke exclusively to Going Places in the Platinum Lounge of the KLIA before her Malaysia Airlines First Class flight back to the UK. Has your homecoming experience changed since winning MasterChef 2014? Well, I seem to have gained a lot of unknown relatives suddenly! Nothing else has changed much in my personal life. My mother still will not let me into her kitchen, and my friends treat me the same. Professionally, it has definitely kicked up a notch. I have been doing a lot more flying since it was revealed in May that I won MasterChef.

Speaking of flying, you have been back to Malaysia twice this year. How was your experience flying Business Class on Malaysia Airlines? I love how I get to go straight to my destination with Malaysia Airlines. I used to transfer a lot, but Malaysia Airlines is comfortable. Business Class even more so! Plus, the food they serve on board is reminiscent of my Malaysian roots. I love how clean the planes are, too, and the airline staff are always helpful even during long, tiring flights. What are your must-eat foods when you are back in Malaysia? Definitely my mother’s cooking, most particularly her stewed pork with preserved vegetables, and sambal petai. Then there are the hawker foods, which I hope will stick around for a while. I felt touched recently when my daughter Alexa ate the exact same chicken rice I had when I was a child. It is important to me that my daughter is in touch with my roots. Finally, how have the British taken to your Malaysian dishes? During my recent stint at the MasterChef Pop-up Restaurant & Bar, many

complimented my prawn laksa and said they were converted despite not liking spicy food before. I was also told that they wished to visit Malaysia to sample more of our dishes. I am proud that my culinary skills have promoted Malaysian cuisine, as well as Malaysian tourism.

CHIANG MAI, THAILAND

LIFE ON THE VEG Hot destinations for steadfast vegetarians and flexible carnivores Text Tracey Petherick

SAN FRANCISCO, USA

Said to be the city with the world’s best salads, San Francisco has been a haven for vegetarians since the 1960s. There are plenty of exclusively vegan or vegetarian eateries, but the real beauty here might be the meat-serving establishments with vegetarian-friendly options – including late-night snack bars (try Taqueria Vallarta’s famous veggie burritos, available until midnight everyday) and on-the-go food outlets. One of San Francisco’s legendary vegetarian joints is Green’s. Opened in 1979 by Zen Buddhists, it still sources ingredients from the original organic farm run by the Zen community north of the city. Try the brunch menu’s Pinnacles Scramble – scrambled eggs with yellow finn potatoes, chipotle chillies and cheddar, served on corn tortillas with black bean chilli. And we defy anyone to resist the Snickerdoodle ice cream sandwich with nectarines and blueberries. All this, with a spectacular Bay view to boot.

Vegetarianism is a vibrant sub-culture in Thailand’s northern culinary capital, which regularly rates as one of the best cities for vegetarian travellers. Look out for rows of yellow flags flying outside restaurants or pick up a Nancy Chandler map that clearly indicates vegetarian or vegan venues. Make like the locals and head to Khun Churn at the Old Chiang Mai Cultural Centre for an extensive buffet with an incredible salad bar, or try Anchan Vegetarian – a hot spot for visitors and expats that gets rave reviews. Meanwhile, the inexpensive Chiang Mai Vegetarian Society is a no-frills (you wash your own dishes) but big-hearted café and organic food store. GLASGOW, UK

Scotland’s largest city may not be an obvious destination for vegetarians, but People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) last year named it the UK’s best city for vegans. Its broad cultural mix, buzzing social scene and large student community all add up to a city that’s embracing vegetarian trends and offering more world-class veggie eateries. Mono serves interesting, home-cooked vegan food (try the smoked tofu with pesto mayo sandwich, or the seitan burger with barbecue sauce) while hosting exhibitions and book readings. Or head to the friendly and atmospheric Saramago café bar at the Centre for Contemporary Arts for a vegan take on that most Scottish of dishes – haggis. Thinking of dabbling in a bit of flexitarianism? With origins dating back to World War I, Meatless Monday was launched in the USA in 2003 as a public health awareness program. By 2009, Paul McCartney and his daughters Stella and Mary had brought the concept to the UK and into the limelight. Their Meat Free Mondays campaign has celebrity followers that include Gwyneth Paltrow, Jamie Oliver, and Sir Richard Branson. meatfreemondays.com

ECLECTIC CITY Visit the ‘Venice of the north’ for canals, culture and cuisine Text Helen Ochyra Illustration Sio Yean

Do like the Dutch and rent a bike, which is relatively cheap and will often get you across the city centre faster than trams or the subway

a 9.30am Amsterdam is a city for walking, so strap on comfortable shoes and fuel up at Café Wildschut (cafewildschut.nl). This art deco grand café serves its full menu from 9.30am so you can start your morning with an omelette, a cheeseburger or even a rib-eye steak. Take a seat in the elegant interior with its vast windows or better yet, out on the expansive terrace on Roelof Hart Square. b 10am Your first stop is the worldfamous Rijksmuseum (rijksmuseum.nl/en), where Pierre Cuypers’ 19th-century gothic and renaissance building recently underwent a complete modernisation. The new Atrium is a spectacular entranceway that sets the tone for the extensive collection,

featuring works from the 15th to 20th centuries, encompassing everything from photography to paintings. The museum’s star is Rembrandt’s Night Watch, a whopping canvas that’s the only artwork to remain in its pre-renovation position, where Cuypers wanted it to be. In fact, he designed the entire original building around it. c 12.30pm After all that culture, you’re sure to need a sugar fix. Head over to the hip, vibrant De Pijp neighbourhood and take a seat at De Taart van m’n Tante (detaart.com/en/home.htm). This thoroughly over-the-top and utterly unapologetic café is so kitsch, you might think you’ve walked into Barbie’s house – seventies-orange sofas sit next to Louis XV-style chairs, while cakes in all colours of the

rainbow pose beneath bright white birdcages. Order the pecan pie or carrot cake, washed down with a restorative cup of tea. d 2pm Take advantage of the sugar rush to walk to the city centre via Bloemenmarkt, the world’s only floating flower market. This is an unrivalled photo opportunity and a great place to stock up on bulbs so you can grow your very own tulips from Amsterdam. e 3pm “I want to go on living after my death,” Anne Frank wrote in 1944. Her diary has become one of the world’s most widely read books, and her Second World War hiding place is now a museum (annefrank.org). Here you can almost step into the shoes of the author, slipping behind the bookcase and into

her story. Few museums are as moving as this one. f 5pm You can’t visit Amsterdam without at least a quick walk through the infamous Red Light District. Stop for coffee at the Waag, the 15th-century weighing house that now hosts an atmospheric candlelit caférestaurant. g 7pm For dinner, head to one of the many outstanding traditional Dutch restaurants. Restaurant Greetje (restaurantgreetje.nl/ en) is one of the best, serving old-fashioned classics with a modern twist. Try the mackerel fillet with ‘a touch of curry’ and end the dinner with Greetje’s Grand Finale, a decadent serving of all the restaurant’s desserts.

Historical Charm Manila’s Intramuros district offers a heady tour of timeless significance Text and Photos Mark Eveleigh

n a corner of old Manila’s usually sedate historical district, a portly little man is standing to attention. He salutes with exaggerated pomposity and starts humming the national anthem in a harsh tone that reverberates off the old stone walls of Fort Santiago, while roughly 60 onlookers watch his strange performance. “You might notice something about our anthem,” shouts the man when the cheering subsides. “People say that it’s similar to the French anthem only in reverse. In fact that’s a good rule of thumb to remember if you want to understand the Philippines – just

imagine how things ought to be. Then get ‘em, pick ‘em up, turn ‘em around, shake ‘em up, and that’s what you’ll get here.” Carlos Celdran has a delightfully unique way of looking at things. “We are like a huge bowl of halo halo,” he continues. “It’s hard to describe for anyone who hasn’t seen it but the national dessert of Philippines has got shaved ice, jelly, syrup, fruit, evaporated milk, sugar, even sweet potato, kidney beans and sometimes grated cheese. In fact, it’s got way, way too much of everything, like our country.” Celdran’s talks are irreverent, comic, ribald, incisive and frequently, utterly hilarious. He has used his training as an

actor to forge a career as an immensely popular tour guide. He’s become known as the ‘Pied Piper of Intramuros’ because of the huge crowds that follow him on his daily stroll around this historical district. Intramuros literally means ‘inside the walls’; it’s an area that is not only atmospheric, evocative and charmingly timeless but also crucial to visit if you want to understand what made Manila the sprawling city it is today. Constructed almost completely of stone blocks, the walled area was built by the Spanish during their occupation of Manila in the 16th century. It is today the oldest district in the Philippine capital. “Manila was the second most-destroyed allied city of World War II,” says Celdran. “What’s most astounding is that we were flattened not by the Japanese but by our friends, the Americans. It was Imelda Marcos who rebuilt the old town. “People are disappointed that we don’t have ancient monuments and buildings of our own but we never had any granite to build with, only volcanic stone, which remains very fertile in this tropical climate. Plants grow everywhere. We literally have to ‘shave’ our

fort every six months,” Celdran proclaims as we pass the regal old gate of the fort that was built by Spanish conquerors in 1571. What is perhaps most surprising about the crowd that surrounds Celdran as he leads his entourage across the fort’s lawns is that more than half of them are local Filipinos. While humour is never far below the surface, Celdran never shies away from the dark and disturbing side of Intramuros’ history. Fort Santiago was a Japanese prison during the war; prior to that, it was used by the Spanish to incarcerate political prisoners including national hero José Rizal. There are bronze footprints implanted into the stone path that follow the rebel-author’s last walk as he departed for his rendezvous with the Spanish firing squad. Local folklore has it that if you walk in the footprints, you can sense the ghost of the great man. The Americans popularised the image of José Rizal along with that of Coca-Cola, baseball and the wartime Jeeps that later morphed – with typical Filipino exhilaration – into the Jeepney public buses that now roar between Intramuros and the business district. Like the halo halo, they are also overdecorated. Festooned with mirrors, stickers,

lurid artwork and lights (everywhere except where lights should be!), they have become an icon of national exuberance. A short cross-town trip on a Jeepney should be considered a crucial part of any visit to Manila. But for a perfect experience, take the ride only as far as Intramuros and disembark for a far more restful mode of transport. Dozens of pedicabs (Manila's own iconic type of trishaw) creak amid pastelcoloured colonial houses and 25 horsedrawn carruajes still carry tourists as they once transported Spanish colonial leaders, Filipino nobility and the powerful priests of Intramuros’ seven churches. “We enjoy laughing at ourselves. Just like the tourists who come here, we have a very confused idea of our own culture,” Celdran says. “We don’t have any traditional

Asian dancing because we were subjugated by the Spanish for 333 years. We soak up everything like a sponge, we adopted their culture and they gave us their names. Then the Americans came and we latched on enthusiastically to all things American. We started calling our kids Muhammad Ali and Merry Christmas. And we were a trade centre, so we had influences from everywhere. I have a friend called Casio – obviously his father named him after the watch he’d just bought.” Celdran describes his nation as ‘Uncle Sam’s beaten child’ – the mistreated and abandoned child of colonial fathers. But scratch the surface, and what has traditionally been seen as a lack of culture can instead be appreciated as a uniquely exciting blend. Come to Manila with an open mind and a determination to absorb all the colourful sensations that you’ll find in Intramuros.

THE LIGHTS OF

CHIANG MAI The Thai sky lantern festival of Yi Peng offers a spectacular sight Text Chris Vanderlay Photos Simon Bond

had travelled to Chiang Mai to experience the Yi Peng Festival, a three-day event that has become a magnet for photographers the world over, and was especially eager to see the synchronised release of thousands of sky lanterns. On the train, I started talking to Nattha Chaloeichanya, a Thai university student who was travelling from Ayutthaya for the festival. We discussed how there seemed to be something distinctly Thai about the splendour of floating lanterns, but she argued there was also something much deeper. “Yi Peng has the beauty of seeing all these lanterns light up the sky, yes, but for a lot of people, there’s also a very real spiritual connection to the festival. It’s about releasing all your negativity and, more subtly, it’s a way for us to simply take a moment to stop, breathe, and let go.” Similar to the nationally celebrated Loi Krathong, Yi Peng has roots in an ancient Brahmanic festival that was later adopted

as a ceremony to honour Buddha. Perhaps the main difference between Loi Krathong and Yi Peng is that instead of focusing on the tradition of sailing candlelit baskets (Krathong) down a river, Yi Peng emphasises the use of rice paper sky lanterns (khom loi) that are released into the ether, creating a dreamlike aesthetic. Yi Peng is now renowned as one of the world’s most spectacular festivals. The Thai people light lanterns all year round, but they are constantly visible across Chiang Mai’s skyline during Yi Peng. The Kingdom of Lanna’s former capital, an extraordinary city that brims with ancient temples, is the perfect backdrop for this spectacle. No matter what time of day I looked up, I could always bet on finding at least one lantern, lolloping in the breeze on a meandering mission. One of the paradoxical elements of visiting an ancient city like Chiang Mai for a festival as spiritual as Yi Peng is the obvious demand of an ever-present

the following evening at Maejo University, about 20 kilometres outside the city centre. There was no public transport to the event, but the best option seemed to be the omnipresent Thai songthaews, a kind of pick-up truck adapted to carry passengers and fitted with a roof and two parallel benches for seating. At the last minute, I was offered a ride in an air-conditioned sedan by some generous fellow tourists and I jumped at the chance. Still, I was struck by a small sense of envy during the drive out as I peered into the traffic of songthaews. As they headed toward the university, I saw their many happy

tourism industry. Not far beyond the superannuated walls of the old temple city are the bright lights of commerce and fast food restaurants. Here, a certain fastfood clown mascot is fixed in the bowing Thai wai, its yellow gloved hands praying traditionally to greet customers. I saw a young Thai family silhouetted in front of that neon modernity laugh as they lit a sky lantern. As they watched the lantern ascend, the couple closed their eyes and pressed their palms together while their toddler child clapped. Later that night, I bought some khao man kai (chicken with rice) and took a long walk through the winding streets where fine-dining restaurants blended with street food vendors and stalls. There was something intensely personal about each of the yellow dots that peppered the sky, though it was the simultaneous release of thousands of lanterns that I was most keen on witnessing. I learned that this would take place

passengers sharing the journey together, and I felt a pang of solitude in the leatherbound sedan. After entering the university, I bought a couple of huge cream-coloured lanterns and walked to the main sward where a thin Hollywood-style red carpet divided the grass. There were surprisingly few people sitting in the auburn glow of the afternoon and I wondered if I was at the wrong site. I walked to the food stalls and bought a picnic of pad thai to enjoy on the lawn. Before I finished the meal, the sun had almost completely sunk and a sea of people multiplied exponentially around me. As the venue filled, the proceedings began and a procession of Buddhist monks garbed in immaculate simplicity walked along the carpet toward the stage. The crowd listened to a sermon with reverence, and we were soon instructed to begin lighting the lanterns. Experienced locals helped tourists with tips on how to prepare the lanterns as a feeling of community grew. Then, with most of the giant lanterns

Very quickly, I felt enclosed in a small, comforting space with the bolstering radiance of light, almost like being under a duvet with a torch. As soon as the signal was given, the neighbouring lanterns began to rise, and I could see thousands more beyond floating up majestically. It was as though we were submerged in oceanic waters and enveloped by endless

Each lantern encapsulated something deeply personal and rose to form a canopy of light funnelled up as high as it was possible to see, leaving me below with the equally remarkable sight of numerous smiling faces looking up in elation. People say Thailand has changed amid its journey to become a Southeast Asian economic powerhouse. And certainly, as I stared at the congregation of orange-robed monks sitting with a calm piety onstage, I couldn’t help but notice their striking contrast to the eager wave of smartphones and cameras among the crowd. But then, for one ethereal moment, thousands of lanterns asserted something much simpler, and I was left in an awe of a tranquillity I thought long lost to antiquity.

he city of Córdoba in southern Spain exudes the heady swirl and energy of a flamenco dancer and the passion and grace of a raven-haired Spanish beauty. From mid-April to mid-June, the city springs to life with the staging of major fiestas. From the Festival of the Patios, when the courtyards and wrought iron balconies of whitewashed homes in the old quarter burst with colourful blossoms, to the feria or fair held in the Arenal neighbourhood, life becomes one long celebration for locals and tourists. We were there during the feria, when gaiety, tapas and rebujito (a concoction of the region’s dry white wine, 7UP and ice) flowed like a river and the air was infused with the scent of orange blossoms. Córdoba swarmed with olive-skinned beauties togged up in figure-hugging flamenco dresses and men in gypsy costumes posed for photographs, while the bullfight ring in town resounded with the cries of olé, olé, olé as matadors preened and felled mighty bulls night after night. Nothing can quell the exuberant spirit of the Spaniards, not even the recession

from which the country emerged recently. And that bubbling, no-holds-barred joie de vivre reached out to us as we too were caught up in the web of excitement and eddy of colour as we meandered in the old quarter, eating tapas and quaffing a drink or two at the bars. The strumming of flamenco guitars percolated out of flower-draped doorways as we stopped at a bar where a duo thrummed and sang flamenco songs with soulful passion. This town where happy spontaneity reigns has spawned some great flamenco dancers, but Córdoba is not just a fun provincial place; it’s a historic location that wears its rich past lightly. Once one of the great capitals of the world and the largest, richest city in Europe, it is today often bypassed by tourists in search of Granada and Seville’s more flamboyant delights. Yet, Córdoba is addictive. It sings a siren song, almost plaintive and pleading, about the time when its splendours rivalled that of Constantinople (modernday Istanbul) as the only capital of the Muslim caliphate in the West (AD 7111031). Córdoba was then part of what was lyrically called Al-Andalus, also known as Islamic Iberia or Moorish Spain (AD 711-1492), which occupied most of modern Spain and Portugal at the height of its supremacy. Way before this period, Córdoba seized its place in the sun as the largest city of Roman Spain. We crossed the recently restored Roman bridge into the charming old town where the ghosts of the past seem to peek

out of old doorways and arches of whitewashed homes, topped with crescent tile roofs, and in the twists and turns of cobbled streets with weathered stone fountains. The wraiths seemed to strut around in Juderia, the medieval Jewish quarter with its ninth-century synagogue, and in the centrepiece of the town, the Mezquita, considered by some to be the greatest mosque ever built. As we moved out of the Mediterranean sun and into the interior of the mosque (now a cathedral) via the Patio los Narajos, scented with orange and lemon trees, we were overwhelmed. The

Mezquita turned out to be a vast, cool space where 850 marble, jasper and granite columns, bridged by red and white double stone arches, rose with a sort of hypnotic symmetry. The Mezquita seemed to reverberate with the prayers of the faithful going back centuries. In its heyday, scholars studied astronomy, religion, philosophy, geometry and countless other intellectual pursuits here, passing them on to the West. The mosque was vastly augmented in the 10th century, but in 1523, a Baroque cathedral was planted in its midst after the Christian re-conquest of Córdoba in 1236.

Interestingly, the belfry of the cathedral was built around the minaret of the mosque. For us, this highlighted the manifold layers of history and culture that sheathe Córdoba, which one peels away like the layers of an onion. We ambled around the interior as guides spoke their well-rehearsed lines to groups of tourists, while some visitors stared bemusedly around them, finding it difficult to take it all in. Each pillar is different because it was sourced from Roman ruins and old churches; yet there is a tremendous sense of harmony. The most riveting is the bejewelled mihrab, or niche, that indicates the direction of Mecca. Once outside, we ambled into the Jewish quarter with its meandering alleys and Arabic archways and patios – some have been converted into romantic wisteria-draped outdoor cafés or pizzerias with wood-fired ovens; another has become a Moorish bath. We ducked under one arch and emerged in what resembled a medieval souk. Around a large courtyard, buried in climbing ivy and red geraniums, there were little craft shops selling jewellery, leather and other goods. Farther away, a museum studded with matador costumes and sepia-tinted posters advertised bullfights of yore. Also in the old quarter was the Inquisition Museum, said to have the largest collection of torture instruments in Europe. We walked through its halls, amazed but appalled at the same time, at the ingenuity of man in the torture of his brethren. It was in the adjacent fortified palace of Alcazar, with its lush gorgeous gardens overlooking the tranquil Guadalquivir river that Christopher Columbus importuned Ferdinand and Isabella, the Catholic monarchs, to finance his voyage to India. Isabella refused, but as Columbus walked away, Ferdinand persuaded her to open her purse strings, which she did, ushering in the era of colonisation. But it was in the Royal Stables of Alcazar that we experienced some of our most memorable moments. This was where the Spanish or Andalusian thoroughbreds were reared from Arab stock at the behest of King Philip II, who was a lover of all things equestrian. Today, tourists can get a glimpse of purebred Spanish steeds being put through their paces, manes flying, muscles rippling under sleek, shiny coats as they move

in superb unison with their handsome, costumed riders. As dusk mantled the Royal Stables, the statuesque Spanish horses and the ramrod-straight riders pranced out to stirring music, almost as though they were a single entity. As the light played evocatively on the horse, the rider and the dancers in an engaging moving cameo, we were enthralled; not a leaf stirred and one could only hear the collective breathing of a mesmerised audience that watched the arabesques created by the actors in this spectacle filled with sound, light and panache. The show came to its heartstopping finale with a flamenco dancer, as the horse and rider performed as one, their sinuous movements complementing each other in a superb show of dance and horsemanship. As we left the Royal Stables, the sound of laughter and clinking of wine glasses wafted from the sidewalk cafés. The night was still young in Córdoba, which seemed to swagger and strut, determined to outdo its great rivals Seville and Granada. AD the39Rest GoingPlaces OL.pdf

Working together for a healthier Malaysia For Anna Braun and her family, Malaysia has always been considered their first home. “Both our children were born here, so we really feel rooted to this country,” says Anna. Although she admits it took time to adjust, the reception she has received has been warm and friendly. “I really value the diversity of Malaysia and the different cultures and religions,” she adds. As President of B. Braun Asia Pacific, Anna is constantly looking at ways to expand the company’s operations in Malaysia, and she admits, the timing couldn’t have been more ideal. You’re part of the Residence Pass-Talent (RP-T) programme, what do you think of it?

I think the programme really gives a long-term perspective to foreigners working and living in Malaysia. You feel at home and not just in transit. Apart from this stability, the greatest benefit certainly is that my husband has an independent work permit too.

Would you encourage foreign talent to seek out employment in Malaysia?

Yes. Malaysia is a great way to explore working in Asia. It has interesting industries and with its diversity, gives great exposure to the different life and working styles. It is also at the heart of the very dynamic ASEAN region.

How would you like to see B. Braun expand further in Malaysia?

We are already undergoing the largest expansion in the entire group with an investment of RM2.0 billion until 2016 in Penang, which has become our largest site. In addition, we have just relocated the regional headquarters for Asia Pacific back to Penang. Our future plans include increasing our R&D resources here and developing additional educational programmes for our existing and future employees. All these activities will provide even more employment opportunities for Malaysians.

What about the rate of growth, specifically in relation to your industry?

The healthcare sector is a leading driver of economic growth in Malaysia. Changing demographics, a more affluent society and more health-conscious lifestyles have led to the creation of a robust domestic industry in healthcare. This is supported by the fact that Malaysia has already a healthcare system and is also strengthening its healthcare services to patients from abroad.

The RP-T enables highly qualified expatriates to continue residing and working in Malaysia for up to ten years. As it is personal to holder, it provides greater flexibility in terms of employment. The RP-T is also extended to spouses and children (below 18 years old) of successful applicants, allowing their spouses to seek employment in Malaysia. Find out more about the RP-T at www.talentcorp.com.my.

Istria’s Black Diamonds Finding (and eating) truffles in Croatia Text and Photos Chaney Kwak

O

The black flakes of truffles add a woodsy flavour to this pasta dish

Black truffles handpicked by the Karlić

f all the problems a sybaritic traveller could face, I was experiencing a whole new dilemma in Istria, a heart-shaped peninsula in Croatia: there was just too much truffle. Everywhere I went, I kept finding the prized mushroom in all kinds of dishes. There it was, crowning tagliata, or sliced beefsteak, like a white tiara; then the pungent black flakes showed up in fettuccine alfredo, studding the pasta dish with particles of flavour. And when I least expected it, I tasted the unmistakable woodsy flavour inside a creamy semifreddo. Truffles are supposed to be rare, but the so-called black diamonds were surprisingly abundant on the tables of Istria.

Jutting into the northern end of the Adriatic Sea, the Istrian peninsula and its islands are discreetly popular holiday destinations, sought after among Europeans in the know, yet far less touristy than Venice and other nearby attractions. The fertile plains and verdant coast have long made this region a prized territory among major powers like the Roman and Austro-Hungarian empires— and most recently, Yugoslavia before Croatia’s independence in 1991. When you visit, you’ll see why so many sought to possess this 3,600-square-kilometre piece of rural heaven. The spectacular coast can impress even the most seasoned sun-and-sea set, while interior hilltop villages beckon epicurean travellers who enjoy fresh farm-to-table fare and awardwinning wines against the backdrop of medieval architecture and rolling hills. Blessed with a mild Mediterranean climate, stunning coastlines, and an ancient Roman legacy—not to mention a dose of dolce vita from neighbouring Italy—the western region of Croatia has always been a place people flock to enjoy life. It was here that a local truffle hunter named Giancarlo Zigante found in 1999 the largest white truffle ever discovered in the world. Weighing over 1.3 kilograms, the tuber magnatum pico still holds the Guinness World Record. It could

have fetched an impressive price at an international auction, but Zigante decided to cook it and throw a lavish dinner party for a hundred guests instead, and thus began Istria’s reputation as a foodie destination. Today, Zigante’s eponymous restaurant in the village of Livade attracts an international clientele with its Istrian dishes, which are heavily influenced by Italian cookery. In the restaurant’s elegant dining room, I indulged in a long lunch of sheep cheese mousse, beef carpaccio with fresh ricotta, and tender cheek of Boskarin (the indigenous grey cattle) – all with slices of truffle, carefully sliced at the table by waiters sporting white gloves, as if they’re handling precious jewellery. If those robust dishes were delicious on their own, the touches of truffle added complexity to their flavours. Almost all of Zigante’s (restaurantzigante.com) dishes feature truffle. In fall, when the prized white truffles are harvested, the restaurant goes overboard with the tubers, with dishes like ravioli doused in a port and white truffle reduction, and lamb fillet seasoned with white truffle. With the abundance of truffles in Istria, how hard could it be to find them? I turned to Crnko, a 10-year-old Labradorterrier mix, for an answer. Hair jet-black and nose sprinkled with dirt, Crnko was

an energetic mutt, trained specifically to sniff out truffles. In a rural hamlet named Paladini, I descended down a thicket of bushes in a wet forest with Crnko and his owner, Ivan Karlić, a 21-year-old with penetrating translucent eyes. While black truffles can be found in Croatia year-round, the rarer white ones are at their prime from September through January. During the season, thousands of people with over 10,000 dogs wander around Istria looking for truffles, Ivan told me. But in the woods that belong to the Karlić family, we were the only ones navigating the paths between the towering oak trees, and in no time Crnko dove into a pile of dirt and started digging in a frenzy of excitement.

The Buzet Festival of Truffles is on from Nov 8-9 featuring fresh truffles and produce made with truffles from nearby farms, as well as cheese, honey, wine, olive oil, and jams

Ivan held Crnko back and dug out a small root. “We can’t eat red truffles,” Ivan said, pocketing the strawberry-sized fungus and petting Crnko for a job well done. “But it smells the same as other truffles, so the dog finds it.” Truffles grow underground, invisible to the untrained eye. Foragers often rely on the help of dogs like Crnko. Curiously, humans are better than dogs at spotting truffles by sight. Ivan found a couple that Crnko simply sniffed at and walked away from. “When they are not ready, he cannot smell it,” Ivan explained. Ivan has been a truffle hunter since he was ten. His whole family is in the trade, from his grandfather to his younger sister. The Karlić family business (karlictartufi. hr) also buys truffles from local hunters and supplies to about 400 restaurants in Croatia. The evolving business has taken Ivan around the country and beyond, though he’s at his happiest when he’s wandering the forest, searching and foraging. “When I look for truffles, I feel, how do you say, this feeling of happiness and excitement.” Ivan searched for the right word: “Adrenaline!” Adrenaline may propel this young truffle hunter to scale the muddy hills, but he was as careful and gentle as an archaeologist when he began digging. In spring and summer, truffles grow up toward the sun’s warmth, he explained, but in winter, they burrow

Because they have to be harvested at their ripest prime, we didn’t excavate any truffles, black or white, in the end. Still, when we returned to the family home empty-handed, Ivan’s mother Radmilla prepared us a brunch of local cheese and hearty omelettes, buttery and topped with generous heaps of truffles—eating delicacies in such a rustic setting, I realised, was quintessential Croatia: delicious and without pretention. My travels around Istria took me to the handsome port of Rovinj, a picturesque half-island of Venetian-style architecture, and the village of Ipsi, where I tasted superb olive oil produced by the award-winning oilier Ipsa. I trod medieval cobblestones of the picture-perfect hilltop village of Motovun, and explored the intact Roman amphitheatre of Pula. At each stop, I was never too far from a restaurant, fancy or rustic, serving Istrian dishes that combined the heartiness of continental cuisine with Italian finesse. To catch my flight out of Croatia, I returned to Zagreb, the energetic capital city. Compared to Istria, the city of a quarter million felt crowded and metropolitan, with streets laced with streetcars and jam-packed with stately Austro-Hungarian villas. Feeling a tad nostalgic for the pastoral atmosphere of Istria, I ducked into the most rusticlooking restaurant in the city centre, Stari Fijaker (starifijaker.hr). The cavernous eatery featured a mishmash of filling dishes from around the region, from venison stew to lamb soup, beef goulash to grilled trout. And truffle, of course.”

Eastern Delight Sarawak laksa is rice vermicelli with soup made from an aromatic paste of fresh herbs and spices, and topped with prawns, chicken and shredded omelette Text Tan Lee Kuen Photo SooPhye Props and Styling Rohani Jelani

AUNTIE CHRISTINA, KEDAI MAKANAN NAM CHUAN

Ask any Sarawakian about their iconic laksa, and they’ll tell you the Kuala Lumpur versions do not quite measure up. Auntie Christina hails from Kuching and she’s brought her home secrets with her; so far she’s doing a stand-up job of offering homesick Sarawakians a taste of home. Her prawn stock base is sweet; combined with her fresh homemade laksa paste, it results in a soup redolent of spices. What’s more, she uses the coarser-textured meehoon that is characteristic of this dish. Food presentation is beautiful too.

POH LAM LAKSA, CHOONG CHOON

Another must-go spot for Sarawak laksa in Kuching, Poh Lam Laksa is one of the original stalwarts of this noodle dish. Staying true to their time-honoured recipe, the proprietors have kept it basic but remarkably tasty.

CHOON HUI CAFÉ 34 Ban Hock Road, Kuching, Sarawak Opens: Tuesday-Sunday, 7am12pm; closed Monday

CHOON HUI CAFÉ

The Sarawak laksa in Choon Hui café sets the standard. It is one of the most popular stalls in Kuching, and certainly one of its spiciest. The soup is rich, thick and full of flavour from the homemade paste, which is one of the defining elements in this luscious bowl. The food runs out quickly, so stragglers coming in after 10am for a bit of noodle comfort often leave disappointed.

In Sarawak, this laksa dish is traditionally a breakfast food at the local coffee shop

The soup, which has a murky hue to it, brims with prawn flavour. Spice levels are kept moderate for less heat-oriented palates, but easily fired up with the accompanying sambal belacan (shrimp paste).

7TH MILE KITCHEN, KELANA JAYA

THE MAKING OF SARAWAK LAKSA 1 Red chilli, galangal, lemongrass: The laksa paste is made from a variety of herbs and spices such as chillies, lemongrass, galangal, shallots and tamarind. 2 Egg: Shredded omelette 3 Meehoon: The coarsertextured rice vermicelli is common to this dish

Tucked away on the ground floor of a block of apartments is this bare-basics shop selling a handful of Sarawak goodies, laksa being one of them. You can also find kolo mee and the rare-inthe-Klang-Valley tomato noodles. The essential spice-laden paste is a special order from Kuching, and is wonderfully aromatic. Using the finer meehoon, probably to cater to local tastes, 7th Mile Kitchen gets crowded on the weekends.

4 Prawns: The soup is made from prawn stock. Fresh ones are used as a topping

MADAM TANG’S

7 Chicken: Shredded blanched chicken tops the dish

There are three Madam Tang’s in Kuching, all serving their signature laksa in generous portions. Fans come here for the rich flavour of its stock, thanks to the special blend of spices and the use of high-quality, fresh ingredients. A good Sarawak laksa is reliant on its paste, and at Madam Tang’s, it is piquant. The dish comes topped with your choice of prawns - small, medium or jumbo. For this one, it’s worth going all out and large.

5 Coriander: A fresh garnishing 6 Lime: Squeeze the lime into the accompanying sambal belacan (shrimp paste) and mix it in with the soup

ALEXIS

For beginners who like a little luxe to go with their Sarawak laksa, there is Alexis. Still going strong after more than a decade of offering upscale local fare alongside their pizza and pasta, Alexis’ version of the dish is made palatable for a variety of taste buds. It is rich without smothering, kept respectfully spicy and packed with fat, fresh prawns. Besides, where else can you enjoy a glass of Pinot Noir and a live jazz performance with your Sarawak laksa?

Malaysia’s popular creative arts festival, Urbanscapes, showcases massive local and international indie talent

usic festivals have long cultivated huge, loyal followings, but the rising ease of travel is helping obsessive festival-goers get their fix in far-flung destinations where a muddy field full of thousands of fenced-in strangers equates the party of a lifetime. Promoters compete fiercely to create a successful festival, which can become a national asset. Kuala Lumpur’s offerings haven’t quite made it yet to the big leagues of Glastonbury, Bonnaroo or Pinkpop, but every festival has to start somewhere. With that in mind, Urbanscapes, Malaysia’s premier creative arts festival, could someday become a contender in the world of cultural mega-gatherings. Now in its 12th year, Urbanscapes is bigger than ever, with not only a festival site but also satellite shows around town

to keep the music going well beyond a weekend. Inspired by its founder’s own experience at Glastonbury over a decade ago, Urbanscapes is expanding fast with four stages and an attendance of 10,000 people per day. It spotlights Malaysian alongside international acts, in addition to art, comedy, DJs and theatre. “It is important to support local artists,” says the festival’s founder, Adrian Yap. “We are proud we are a Malaysian festival and we want to keep it that way. The festival has a Malaysian sense, so that should come across, be it through the food, the setting or the approach. It is important to have that identity.” “When it comes to music, we like to have a nice mix; we want local, regional and international,” he adds. “For programming, we have commercial realities. We have to book these bands to sell tickets, but we can highlight local acts.” Urbanscapes begins its build-up throughout November with shows, parties and other events culminating in the two-day festival itself on December 6-7 at the Horse Ranch, Resorts World Genting in the highlands just north of Kuala Lumpur. Organisers chose an agricultural spot to get people to a green place that would have been hard to find within 20 minutes of the city. “It is unique. It’s an agricultural park. It is used for research, to see how pineapples are grown. They also open it to events. We took a drive one day and found a location,” says Yap. “We outgrew our old space. We wanted to find something permanent so we wouldn’t have to move every few years,”

he says. “We found this place. They have never done anything of this sort there. It was over 200 acres large. It is beautiful. It doesn’t have an infrastructure, but we work around that.” Once the editor of a pop culture fanzine, KLue, Yap has persevered in his desire to make things happen locally and build a thriving music scene in Kuala Lumpur. Even though Urbanscapes struggled and suffered losses for years, Yap and his comrades did not give up on their ambitious vision. “In order for the scene to move forward, we need to work as a team,” Yap emphasises. “I feel there is a lot of talent here.” Yap has been proven right. Urbanscapes is now known as

the nurturing ground that helped build the careers of internationally successful artists such as Yuna, Zee Avi, Kyoto Protocol, as well as the DJ collective, Twilight Action Girl. Beginning three years ago, the festival has upped its game by bringing in artists such as Iceland’s Sigur Rós and Glaswegian indie band Franz Ferdinand. This year, another Glasgow band will take the stage: synth-pop favourites Chvrches. This Scottish band has enjoyed the pick of the crop of international gigs, from the Reading Festival to performing on NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. This will be their first time performing in Malaysia. The bill for this year’s Urbanscapes will also include Los Angeles indie rock band Local Natives and legendary American college rock outfit The Lemonheads. Those coming to see what’s brewing locally will hear from indie artist OJ Law, piano balladeer Ali Aiman and singersongwriter Najwa. Malaysian comedian Kuah Jenhan will join the festival, along with June Marieezy from the Philippines, whimsical cover band Faiq and the Manja Mob, and The Generalists. The inclination for Malaysian talents has been to go to New York City and other music hubs to make it big. Urbanscapes is working to change this, as it has become a platform to get Malaysians interested in home-grown music and to build confidence. Urbanscapes “has definitely helped

the growth of the local indie scene as most local acts look forward to getting a chance to perform at the festival,” says Fikri Fadzil, who started The Wknd Sessions, an online space for the latest news, music and events. “The month-long programming would definitely allow a lot more musicians to be involved in this year's festival.” Up in Genting Highlands, where the cool temperature supplies a reprieve from the urban heat, Urbanscapes is set to help local acts get a head start at wider recognition. “We want you to come and see, discover something new and unique,” says Yap.

INDAHNYA KRAF ROTAN

Masih segar dalam ingatan Chong, zaman kegemilangan industri perabot rotan di Malaysia bermula sekitar tahun 1970-an hingga 1980-an.

CARING FOR RATTAN Lightweight, durable and flexible – rattan accepts paints and stains and is available in numerous colours. Its elegant timelessness has made it one of the most popular materials for outdoor furniture. With good maintenance, rattan furniture can practically last forever. Owner-artisan Chong Yon Nam from Woon Cane Enterprise, one of the last few rattan furniture makers in Kuala Lumpur, shares some tips on caring for your rattan furniture: 1. CLEAN To clean periodically, vacuum away loose dirt. Prepare a solution of detergent and water. Skim the suds off into a damp sponge and apply to furniture, working on a small portion at a time. Use a small brush in crevices. Do not wet wooden parts of furniture. Wipe off suds with a clean, damp sponge.

Sambil mengenang hari-hari perantisnya, dia menyambung: “Tangan kami kerap terluka kerana menggunakan rotan. Balik rumah saja, nenek saya tengok pun sedih. Jadi, saya tak menggalakkan orang muda untuk menceburi bidang ini. Sakit belakang dibuatnya.” Biarpun begitu, San Ngau tetap bangga dengan hasil kraftangannya. “Perabot rotan ini dibentuk sepenuhnya dengan tangan. Sekilas pandang, corak pada perabotperabot ini seakan-akan dihasilkan menggunakan mesin. Tapi, kamu tahu hakikatnya bukan begitu.” Tanpa berselindung, Chong berkata, semua kerusi buatannya boleh bertahan selama tiga hingga empat dekad. “Tempat duduk pun masih elok dan kukuh. Inilah namanya kehalusan seni kraftangan sebenar,” ujarnya dengan bangga. Chong Yon Nam No 138-B, Batu 3, Jalan Kelang Lama, Kuala Lumpur Tel: +6012 321 0619; +6016 338 6526 tyzmd.blogspot.com

2. CARE Wipe rattan furniture with a damp cloth and take care not to soak the furniture. If it does become over-saturated, dry outdoors in the sunlight, if possible. The natural plant material will generally return to its original shape, so take care not to bend it while wet. Keep furniture away from areas of extreme heat as this can warp or overly dry out the furniture. If mildew or mould begins to form, use a strong bleach in soapy water to clean the affected areas.

The furniture must then be immediately dried outdoors. 3. MAINTAIN Natural fibres can fade in strong sunlight. This is a natural process and not necessarily bad. However, if possible, rotate furniture throughout the space on a regular basis to evenly distribute the fading. Consider installing blinds or awnings to reduce extreme sun exposure. Lift rattan furniture when moving it. To avoid splitting the fibres, don’t drag furniture around. Rattan seats are very strong and yet flexible enough to provide a comfortable sit, but they can sag over time. Using a cushion not only makes seating more comfortable, but also serves to spread weight more evenly across the surface. Woon Cane Enterprise custom-makes, upholsters and refurnishes rattan as well as bamboo and wood furniture.

Practice makes Perfect We caught up with singer Alvin Chong, who makes a guest appearance on our Mandarin Mix radio channel this month...

Your new EP is called Perfect. What can your fans expect from it? It’s a reflection of my journey so far in the entertainment industry. I hope my fans will be able to relate to and be motivated by any of the three songs –Perfect, Important (both playing on the Mandarin Mix channel) and Let Go –and their meaningful messages. Describe what ‘perfect’ means to you? For me it means flawless, the best, irreplaceable. You can always try to be as perfect as you want to, but as long as you have done your best then that will have made that moment truly ‘perfect’. What music do you listen to? I don’t have a specific favourite genre or artist, but lately I been listening to JJ Lin, A-Mei, Hunter Hayes, Ed Sheeran and Ariana Grande. You highlight travelling as a hobby. What are some of your favourite places you’ve visited and why? I like to stay in one place, a small town, sitting in a corner having a coffee and observing people; how they live their lives, and their local culture. One of the most enjoyable places I have visited is Australia, because of their unique mixed culture and the people there, who are fascinating.

What else do you like doing? I go to the gym, swim or play badminton. If there’s a good movie on at the cinema I will definitely go and watch it. I also try and take as many naps as I can, because usually when I’m working, I don’t get enough sleep. You’ve won many awards. Do any stand out in particular, and why? To me, each award serves as a kind of encouragement to continue chasing my dream. Every single award plays a significant role in pushing me to continue to do better, improve and strive to do more. You’re a keen social networker, with Facebook, Weibo and Instagram accounts. How does it help you relate to your fans? The social network nowadays really helps me stay in touch and connect with my fans. I can share things about what’s going on in my life or write a message that I hope inspires them. It also serves as instant feedback on what’s going on in their lives. When I have time, I do my best to respond to their comments or messages so we can continue to motivate each other. What does your family make of your success? They’re my support, especially when I’m down or want to give up, because knowing that no matter what happens they’ll always be there for me is the most comforting thing and the motivation to keep going. They are very important to me. What would you be doing if you weren’t a singer? I think I’d be a businessman or event organiser or in marketing. I’d prefer to work freelance, and I’d definitely be doing something creative. Let’s just hope that day will never come though, as I really love singing and I hope I’m able to continue in this industry for a long time. What advice would you give to someone starting out in the entertainment industry? Once you start something, don’t ever give up. Hold on to your dream and continue to work hard towards it. There might be a lot of obstacles in life, but if you give up you may not know when or how close you’d come to making your dreams come true. Family Affair Filmed over 12 years, with the cast remaining the same throughout, Boyhood follows the life of Mason from age five to 18. Director Richard Linklater, who cast his own daughter as Mason’s sister, was only too aware of the size of the task. ‘We film-makers are control freaks,’ says Linklater. ‘But in this case you had to give up full control, and admit you have a major collaborator sitting with you at all times. And that’s the unknown, the future.’

Hit Parade Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons are the focus of Clint Eastwood’s biopic Jersey Boys. They didn’t get the gig. • Oscar-winning actor Joe Pesci was instrumental in introducing some of the future band members to each other. • During the 1970s, Frankie Valli suffered from serious hearing loss and subsequently relied on ‘singing from memory’. Unearthing the facts China’s Terracotta Army was discovered in 1974 by local farmers digging a well in the north-western province of Shaanxi. However, they found only part of this extraordinary archaeological treasure, and experts have since learned much more about it, as this month’s new documentary, New Secrets Of The Terracotta Warriors, reveals: •T he life-size figures were part of the biggest cemetery ever built, that of China’s first emperor Qin Shi Huang, who died about 2,200 years ago. •T he weapons that the army carry are real, rather than replicas. This is so they could protect the emperor in the afterlife. They are also equipped with chariots and horses to help them in the battle.

New Beginnings Catch up with the stars of Mike & Molly as the show enters its fourth season Season four of sitcom Mike & Molly, about a couple who meet and fall in love at an Overeaters Anonymous group, rejoins the pair as Molly embarks on a life-changing decision. ‘There’s a little bit of a change of direction in that Molly finds herself having something of a midlife crisis,’ explains Billy Gardell, who plays Mike. The aforementioned change of direction is that Molly, played by Melissa McCarthy, gives up teaching and becomes a writer. ‘I think it’s really cool when someone my age is doing the job they always thought they wanted to do, but then asks themselves whether they really want to do it, and then actually goes for it and takes the big risk of trying something else,’ says McCarthy.

This change in direction leaves plenty of comedic potential, says McCarthy. ‘I get to fall on my face so many times, because when you try something big and new you make a lot of mistakes.’ It’s not just Molly who audiences will see doing something new. Although there’s no career change for Mike, the cop will be seeing a little more action in this series. ‘You’re going to see us be cops, rather than just sitting in the diner. You get to actually see me on the job,’ he says. In fact in one episode, Molly gets to actually ride along with Mike, all in the name of research. ‘There’s nothing better than putting Molly in a squad car,’ says Gardell, with more than a hint of sarcasm. ‘Because it just works out!’

•A further two discoveries have been made since 1974, revealing a total of more than 8,000 figures, 130 chariots and 670 horses, covering an area of about 16,300m2. New Secrets Of The Terracotta Warriors is playing on board this month. See page 116 for details

It seems to be more interesting to be part of the dialogue of what’s going on today, rather than being stuck in the past.’ The album also includes a duet – My Heart Is Open – with lead singer Adam Levine’s fellow coach on TV show The Voice, Gwen Stefani. ‘A lot of times when you meet your idols, it’s a letdown,’ says Valentine. ‘But with Gwen it’s the opposite.’ V is playing on board this month. LEMPAD’S

ART

Drawings of the revered Balinese artist return after decades overseas Text Chen May Yee

The 1930s brought big changes in Bali. Foreign visitors began to arrive in significant numbers, and the artists of the time – temple sculptors who worked for royal patrons – started to draw and paint, giving birth to modern Balinese art. I Gusti Nyoman Lempad was already a renowned architect who designed temples and palaces for the ruling family of Ubud when he began working on paper. Lempad illustrated Hindu and Buddhist legends and folk tales as well as everyday life and rituals in Bali. His ink drawings, instantly recognisable for the assured lines of his bamboo brush, were sought after by Western collectors. Lempad was a founder of the influential Pita Maha art collective in the 1930s and also helped set up the Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud, where a major exhibition of his drawings is ongoing. The museum’s curators spent the last eight years scouring archives and auction records to track down 70 drawings from museums and private collections around the world. Some have not been seen in Bali since the 1930s.  Illuminating Line: Master Drawings of I Gusti Nyoman Lempad runs until 24 Nov at the Museum Puri Lukisan in Ubud, Bali.
