Vous avez joué au golf à l’université. Rêviezvous d’une carrière professionnelle ? Les coups (roulés, cochés, etc.) m’ont toujours plus intéressé que la ronde elle-même. Je préférais tenter de frapper le coup parfait sur le terrain d’exercice. Je voulais comprendre la science du golf.
You pl ayed college golf. was a competitive career ever part of the dream? I was always more interested in the shot than the round – putting, chipping, all that. To me it was about trying to hit the perfect shot on the driving range. I was more interested in trying to understand the science. is your swing technique based more on theory or personal experience? I know almost every theory from every teaching pro who’s had any influence on the game. But there were days when I left the range with my hands bleeding – I don’t know if you would

say they are covered in calluses or scar tissue! What are some of your golf travel highlights? I go to about 20 tournaments a year. At a tour stop, I’m usually done when the sun goes down. It’s a great job like that – there’s no homework. Torrey Pines in San Diego, Pebble Beach on the Monterey Peninsula and Quail Hollow in Charlotte are all beautiful spots. Chicago is a great city – it reminds me of Toronto. And of course the British Open, especially when it’s in Scotland. It’s the home of the game, and my dad is from Glasgow. But the Canadian Open is home for me.

Students should have goals, but they should also be open to suggestion. Your goals may change during that first lesson, Wyatt notes. “Someone might tell me, ‘I’m not finishing my swing. Some arguments against golf might be: A round requires a good five-hour commitment, you can’t play it at night and, for the tech-minded anyway, there are depressingly few touchscreens involved. Enter TopGolf – “Top” stands for “target-oriented practice” – which combines some of the best aspects of the driving range, the bowling alley, video games and sports bars. Players hit balls embedded with microchips that measure shot distance and accuracy toward range targets that look like crash-landed UFOs. Scoring data pop up on a touchscreen in your group’s stall, which accommodates five or six competing friends. Founded by North London’s Jolliffe brothers in 2000, TopGolf crossed the Atlantic in 2005, establishing a location in Alexandria, Virginia. Now with 10 sites, the company has plans to expand even more in 2014, including openings in Arizona and Georgia. Facilities will feature lessons and clinics by PGA-certified instructors, and a sports bar where a new generation of golfers – some of whom have never swung a club before – can nosh on chef Mark Boyton’s signature Mexican-sushi hybrid (Mushi), and knock back a Tipsy Arnold Palmer (fresh-brewed iced tea and lemonade spiked with two kinds of vodka) while awaiting their turn on the range. Welcome to golf for the 21st century.

John Lynch came sloshing out to welcome me to the Connemara Isles Golf Club on craggy Annaghavane Island off Ireland’s west coast. “Come back inside when you’re through,” he shouted through the wind. “We’ll do you up a fish chowder.” Two hours later, I put my nose close to the steaming bowl, as much for the warmth as the scent of rough chunks of haddock, cod and salmon. “Delicious,” I said to Lynch, one of the club’s founders and its chowder maker. “Fresh off the boat, that fish,” he said, tossing another furry lump of peat onto the aromatic fire. a set of causeways that turned what were once extremely remote and hard-to-reach islands into extremely remote and hard-to-reach islands where you can golf. By most standards, Connemara Isles is not destined for greatness; there are only nine holes, the conditioning is spotty, some fairways are boggy and the design is idiosyncratic. But measured by pure memorability, it has few peers. The ocean can be seen from every hole – I played at low tide, and off the third tee I could easily observe drained tidal pools clotted with giant clumps of seaweed grasping turrets of rock. The third tee was where the course leapt from originality to outright eccentricity. The tee shot calls for a forced carry over a salty inlet to an island green: Leighon Island, an entirely separate land mass. The whole landscape is in play. Getting from the third tee to the third green – crossing from Annaghavane Island to Leighon, in other words – involves passing over a causeway built by Lynch and his brothers. The granite-based, oak-planked bridge looks plenty sturdy, but couldn’t be built today. “Too many regulations,” Lynch told me. “This whole course would be totally illegal now, the way we built it!” The great courses of Ireland – Ballybunion, Lahinch, Portmarnock – are as esteemed as the big tracks of Scotland. But Irish links often tend to be rougher, starker, perhaps more

Mais trop souvent, ces mêmes golfeurs viennent en Irlande et négligent un aspect clé du jeu irlandais : les golfs hors des grands circuits. brutish than their Scottish cousins, which is partly why travelling golfers love them. Yet these same golfers too often come to Ireland and miss a key aspect of Irish golf: the courses that don’t make highlight reels. Just down the coast from Connemara Isles, the Connemara Championship Golf Links is a vastly different experience. Over the millennia, fierce winds blew sand up from the vast Trá Mhór beach nearby, creating one of the most intriguing landscapes ever to hold a golf course. Across the entire treeless expanse, protrusions of native granite, sandstone, quartzite, limestone and even some volcanic rock sprout up above the fescue. The view alone from the elevated tee of the par-5 14th hole, peering south across the rock and shallow dunes toward Trá Mhór and the North Atlantic, will make you wonder why
the course isn’t better known. Yet Declan Mannion, the club captain, told me that 95 percent of the club’s play is from within Ireland. What I found as I drove three hours south to the Iveragh Peninsula in County Kerry is that although Ballybunion and Lahinch deserve to be included among the world’s great courses, the landscape here is unmissable. The spine of the peninsula is the fearsome mountain range known as McGillycuddy’s Reeks, which boasts Ireland’s highest peak, the 1,038-metre Carrauntoohil. From these mist-wigged mountains, the land tumbles into green fields that spill onto sandy dunes and beaches. Streams burble. Sheep bleat. The wind blows. It’s a complex vision when the clouds block the sun, but when they part and bolts of platinum light strike the earth, the colours explode and

it feels as if it’s all happened just for you. Both the Ring of Kerry Golf and Country Club and Dooks Golf Club occupy this otherworldly setting. I played the Ring of Kerry course on a morning when the gloom on the first tee partly obscured the pewter-tinted Kenmare Bay. The course runs back and forth across hilly terrain, and some holes, such as the par-4 sixth, seem to be precipitously perched on the edge of the Reeks themselves. relief s’affaisse en prés verts qui s’étirent jusqu’à des dunes et plages de sable. Les ruisseaux murmurent. Les moutons bêlent. Le vent siffle. C’est un tableau contrasté quand les nuages masquent le soleil, mais quand ils s’écartent et que des rais platine dardent le sol, les couleurs explosent et c’est comme si tout ça nous était destiné. C’est ce cadre féerique qui abrite le Ring of Kerry Golf & Country Club et le Dooks Golf Club. J’ai joué sur le parcours du Ring of Kerry un matin où l’obscurité du premier tertre dérobait en partie la baie anthracite de Kenmare. Le parcours sillonne un terrain vallonné et certains trous, par exemple le no 6, une normale 4, semblent s’agripper de peine et de misère à l’à-pic même des Reeks. Les meilleurs trous sont conçus en fonction du paysage. Si l’on réussit parfaitement son coup de départ au 11e, on peut atteindre un immense talus à environ 255 m dans l’allée, ce qui permet de voir sa balle rouler 35 m de plus et de se griser du fabuleux panorama en marchant dans l’allée.

shot from the 11th, you can reach a giant tumbling chute in the fairway about 280 yards out, which gives you another 40 yards of roll and a compelling walk down the middle of the fairway with its colossal views. Choosing your driving route from here to Dooks on the north shore can be viewed as a simple question: Do you enjoy using well-travelled roads that are adequately maintained, or do you prefer single-lane backcountry roads with crumbling pavement, sharp drop-offs to certain death and blind ex-Formula 1 drivers piloting rusting lorries on urgent sod deliveries? Going through the narrow rocky passage of Ballaghbeama Gap made me feel more like Frodo trying to reach Mordor than a man simply trying to make a tee time. The reward was arriving at Dooks and meeting two gentlemen on the first tee: Aidan Gannon and George Boyle, both past club captains and perfect guides through the subtle dunes, hillocks, humps and fescue. Le choix du trajet d’ici au Dooks, sur la côte nord de la péninsule, revient à une simple alternative : soit on aime les routes fréquentées et bien entretenues, soit on préfère les chemins de campagne à une voie et au revêtement douteux, bordés de précipices mortels et empruntés par d’ex-pilotes de F1 frappés de cécité qui effectuent d’urgence des livraisons de gazon au volant de camions rouillés. En franchissant l’étroit passage rocheux du col de Ballaghbeama, je me sentais plus comme Frodon tentant d’atteindre le Mordor que comme un homme cherchant simplement à respecter son heure de départ. En récompense, j’ai fait à mon arrivée au Dooks la connaissance de deux gentlemen au premier tertre : Aidan Gannon et George Boyle, tous deux ex-capitaines du club et guides parfaits dans les subtilités de ses dunes, buttes, buttons et herbes hautes. Le tertre du no 4, une normale 3, est particulièrement inspirant, la vue portant par-delà la baie jusqu’aux pentes verdoyantes de la péninsule de Dingle et, du côté sud, vers la beauté austère des Reeks. J’ai dû user de toutes mes facultés mentales pour me concentrer sur ma tâche, soit un coup de 159 m avec vent de travers jusqu’à un petit vert flanqué de fosses de sable et de monticules. Le tracé du Dooks est plaisant, le gazon parfait, et les verts sont des modèles d’élégance planifiée mais simple. Rien ne semble forcé ou exagéré. Ça ne battra jamais Ballybunion dans les 100 meilleurs parcours au monde,

particularly inspiring spot, rugged scenery stretching across the water to the lush slopes of the Dingle Peninsula and back south to the stark drama of the Reeks. It took considerable mental powers to focus on the task at hand, namely a 174-yard crosswind shot to a small green shouldered by bunkers and mounds. The course routing at Dooks is satisfying, the turf is perfect, the green sites are models of strategic yet simple elegance. Nothing feels forced or over the top. It’s never going to supplant Ballybunion in the Top 100 of the world rankings, but golf is also supposed to be fun for all levels, and if the wind is howling and you’re not in control of your ball, Ballybunion will eat you alive. Dooks will only tear off a limb or two. After finishing, I sat in the club bar with George Boyle and surveyed the warm room. People were standing at the bar chatting, sitting at tables chatting, walking in and out chatting. He kindly bought me a Guinness, insisting that my evening shouldn’t end at that. “It was hard work out there, my boy,” he said. “It’s at least a five-Guinness night, I’d say.” The less-visited Irish courses can be rough, beautiful, stark and quirky, but they all speak to a kind of harmony with the planet. I tilted my glass toward George and felt something affirming about Dooks, the camaraderie, the ability to enjoy the moment. It felt like a golf course I could play every day for the rest of my life.

Après la partie, je suis allé avec George Boyle au bar du club. J’ai jeté un œil sur la pièce chaleureuse ; partout, debout au bar, attablés, entrant et sortant, les gens jasaient. George m’a gracieusement offert une Guinness en insistant sur le fait que ma soirée ne devait pas s’arrêter là. « T’as fait du bon boulot, mon gars, a-t-il ajouté. Ça vaut au moins cinq Guinness, selon moi. » Le golf tel que joué en Irlande sur ses parcours les moins visités peut être difficile, superbe, âpre et original, mais ces terrains dénotent tous une forme d’harmonie avec la planète. J’ai levé mon verre vers George en me sentant conforté par la camaraderie, l’art de profiter du moment présent ressentis au Dooks. Il me semblait que je pourrais y jouer chaque jour de ma vie.
