Natasha Wittke combined her two favourite things – art and canoeing – to design a collection of solid Ontario-sourced cherry-wood blades adorned with vibrant ­graphic patterns. At Norquay Co., named after the tiny island in Lake Huron where she enjoyed her first solo camping trip, each paddle is handcrafted by an artisan in Northern Ontario before Wittke applies her trademark geometric motifs in Montreal. The functional, varnished creations are equally at home mounted in the living room or gliding through tranquil waters by the lakeside cabin.

Master the ABCs of 3-D with MakeLab’s ­introduction to threedimensional printing. You’ll learn to navigate an interactive work environment, produce and manipulate forms with a web-based modelling tool and create an object that you can take home the same day. Bring along your laptop and your imagination; then watch your ­ideas come to life by printing out a scale model of your creation in PLA, a biodegradable plastic made of corn, potatoes or beets, on one of eight MakerBot Replicator 2 printers. The two-hour course is led by industrial-design professionals who’ve made their

name working with clients like the Royal Ontario Museum. Check out MakeWorks, a coworking studio for designers, freelancers and startups, located in the same building. SWEET PETE’S BIKE SHOP I switched out my one-speed vintage Peugeot fixie for a cushy spring-seat cruiser with seven speeds and a big bell. It looks like I’m out for a joyride, which I am, and it’s perfect for getting to and from work without breaking a sweat.  J’ai changé mon vieux monovitesse Peugeot retapé pour un modèle de randonnée pépère, avec selle à ressort, sept vitesses, et sonnette. J’ai l’air d’être en balade, ce qui est le cas, et c’est parfait pour les allers-retours au travail, sans se fatiguer.

My favourite late-night snack is the grilled octopus.  Quand on travaille tard, notre cercle d’amis finit surtout par compter des gens de la restauration. The sommelier, Anton Potvin, put together an exceptional wine list. It’s extensive and eclectic with a stimulating by-the-glass selection. BETHLEHEM XXX I go to this cozy, funky bar-restaurant – it has a kitschy Middle East vibe – with colleagues for a bite and drinks. Different chefs come in and prepare their own specialties, and I like their tequila either mixed or straight up.  Je prends un verre et une bouchée avec mes collègues dans ce resto-bar allumé et douillet à l’ambiance moyen-orientale kitsch. CINÉMA BEAUBIEN I like the neighbourly, human energy when you go in.

It’s one of the last real repertory theatres, and they present different types of films, mostly from Europe and Quebec. We took the kids here to see Xavier Dolan’s Mommy.  J’aime l’esprit de quartier et la chaleur humaine du lieu. C’est l’un des derniers vrais cinémas de répertoire, et on y projette des films de genres différents, surtout d’Europe et du Québec. J’y suis allé voir Mommy, de Xavier Dolan, avec mes enfants.

FLEUVE SAINT-LAURENT I love surfing, and there’s a spot near Habitat 67 with an infinite river wave. I find it rejuvenating to go there after work. It’s like being in the countryside, ­completely connected to nature, but it’s only 10 minutes away.  J’adore le surf, et il y a une vague stationnaire sur le Saint-Laurent, près d’Habitat 67. C’est revigorant ­d’aller glisser après le travail ; c’est un peu comme être à la campagne, en symbiose avec la nature, mais à 10 minutes d’ici.
