Life is sweet year-round at the tiny bakery just off Laurier Avenue East, in Montreal’s Plateau neighbourhood, where pastry chef Stéphanie Labelle concocts peach pannacotta, chocolate eclairs and a lemon tart you won’t want to share. But during the holidays, it’s all about the Yule log. Every year means a new, limited-edition recipe: This season it’s white chocolate, pistachio and Quebec-grown blackberries and sea buckthorn, topped with crunchy meringue. “I have the best job — everyone who comes in here has a big smile on their face,” says Labelle.

La vie est douce toute l’année dans cette petite échoppe du Plateau MontRoyal, au coin de l'avenue Laurier Est, où la pâtissière Stéphanie Labelle réalise des panna cotta aux pêches, des éclairs au chocolat et une tarte au citron à se damner. Mais au temps des fêtes, c’est sa bûche de Noël, produite en édition limitée, qui fait le bonheur de ses clients gourmands. Chocolat blanc, pistaches, mûres du Québec, argousier et meringue croquante sont les ingrédients vedettes de la version de 2013. « J’adore mon boulot. Tous ceux qui entrent ici ont un sourire aux lèvres », dit la pâtissière. Nous n’avons aucun mal à la croire.

The $48-million facility, opened in April 2013, has two hightech aluminum-clad cones whose interior spheres offer visitors an immersive virtual experience of the night skies. Sink into a beanbag chair for Continuum, a journey set to the sounds of a score by Philip Glass. “It’s like you’re out there floating in space and travelling through the stars,” says astronomer Marc Jobin. From the Earth to

the Stars is a guided tour by local astronomers – in an imaginary spaceship! – through constellations that change with the seasons. Art Gallery of Ontario I love the Frank Gehry redesign. I bring my kids to the expanded kids’ space in the lower level a couple of times a month. Also, the soup at caféAGO is game-changing.  J’adore le réaménagement de Frank Gehry. J’emmène mes enfants plusieurs fois par mois au vaste espace familial du sous-sol. La soupe du caféAGO sort vraiment de l’ordinaire.

The Roof Lounge They don’t make ’em like this anymore. For fancy drinks – really, as long as you’re not dressed in jeans – the bar in the Park Hyatt Hotel has great views of the city from Yorkville, and a bartender who has been working here for 50 years. I order the vodka martini.  Y en a plus de pareil ! Rien ne vaut ce bar de l’hôtel Park Hyatt pour déguster un drink en bonne et due forme (si toutefois vous portez autre chose qu’un jean). Le panorama depuis Yorkville est spectaculaire et un barman y travaille depuis 50 ans. J’y prends une vodka martini.

06 Gallery Grill For lunch, I like to take people to the Gallery Grill, on the upper floor of Hart House, a Gothic structure on the University of Toronto campus that drips with collegiate nostalgia. Café Olimpico This Montreal landmark reminds me of my childhood, because my dad used to take me to Italian coffee shops. You can only have your coffee the way they serve it – don’t ask for skim milk! I enjoy that attitude.  Un lieu phare qui me rappelle mon enfance, quand mon père m’emmenait dans des cafés italiens. Le Filet Everything here is delicious. The menu changes all the time, but there’s always an amazing fish tartare. It’s a perfect date restaurant – the lighting is very moody.

There’s a sense of intimacy without it being too dark.  Tout y est délicieux. La carte, qui est sans cesse remaniée, comprend toujours un succulent tartare de poisson. L’éclairage tamisé se prête parfaitement aux rendez-vous galants. Le lieu est intime, sans être non plus trop sombre.
