In-Flight Entertainment Right Before Your Eyes Osterhout Design Group’s R-7 Smart Glasses may have had military and medical beginnings, but the San Francisco-based tech company sees potential in the aircraft cabin. The glasses display video at 720p HD and have headset attachments for sound, making them a practical device for in-flight entertainment.

It’s a platform that Paramount is willing to take a chance with.

The Hollywood studio lent content to ODG so it could test the movie viewing experience on the glasses.

“ODG’s Smart Glasses deliver crystal clear audio visual quality perfect for showing Paramount content,” said Joan Filippini, Paramount’s SVP, Non-Theatrical Distribution.

And unlike watching movies on seatback or passengers’ personal electronic devices, the Smart Glasses could provide privacy in tight spaces. “I know there can be a lot of discomfort, especially if you’re watching a movie that the kid next to you shouldn’t be watching,” says Ed Riehle, director, Special Projects, ODG.

Caribbean Airlines Gets Smart With Passenger Entertainment Thanks to smartphones, enjoying media on a single screen is no longer enough.

APEX Takes Flight: GEE Flies Albatross One One might think that an in-flight technology and content supplier would want to demonstrate its IFE and connectivity solutions in a state-of-the-art airliner, in a plane that just rolled off the assembly line. But Global Eagle Entertainment decided to take a radically different approach when it converted a vintage flying boat into an airborne test bed. At APEX EXPO, select groups of lucky attendees were invited onboard this piece of aviation history for 30-minute flights, launching from Portland’s Willamette River, minutes from the Oregon Convention Center.

missions with the US Air Force, the plane went on to support NASA’s Space Shuttle training program.

The astronauts’ post-mission signatures have been preserved on one of the cabin’s walls.

GEE has been flying Albatross One all over North America since 2008. “It’s an airplane that gathers a lot of interest,” says Simon McLellan, GEE’s chief engineer and VP engineering, who is also rated to pilot the Albatross. “This airplane is so unusual, and there aren’t many of them around now.

We show the Internet on it, of course, but the fun part is that people love flying in it.”

The amphib is equipped with GEE’s third-generation system, which includes high-speed broadband, high-definition television and streaming

video-on-demand. In flight, the flying boat’s intense vibrations simulate a “worst case” scenario, ensuring rigorous testing of the systems.

And McLellan says that operating Albatross One isn’t as costly as might be expected for a 60-year-old flying antique. “As airplanes go,

it’s a very inexpensive test bed, as opposed to a 737 or a business jet,” he says.

Meanwhile, back on the ground at APEX EXPO, GEE announced a major agreement with Etihad Airways to provide in-flight entertainment content aboard six airlines of Etihad Airways Partners.

Something that never ceases to amaze you in your industry?

There are many things that never cease to amaze me. Just the act of putting anyone on an aircraft and flying this often in a safe environment, an entertaining, connected, engaged environment for 15 hours, I’m still amazed. I’m still amazed that they can take off from LAX in the morning and 15-18 hours later you’re in Singapore.

I also think it’s still amazing that we are an industry that is a growing, that is touching more and more people, that is changing the way the world is working.

The impact of the airline industry on the world economy is great. It’s a great industry to be in.

What can the airline industry learn from the entertainment industry?

I think that Thales is at the crossroads of these things. What we see happening in the entertainment industry is that speed to market is very key. Whether it’s on the hardware side or the software side, you need to be able to update your system as often as possible. You need to be able to refresh the experience. What

we need to learn from this industry is how do we increase productivity, our speed, and our time to market.

How do you see in-flight entertainment evolving over the coming years? What will be the key drivers?

I believe that it will be connective. It will be personalized. It will be more flexible in the way that it can evolve as new technology will appear without having to do a full overhaul of the infrastructure.

The next career milestone you’d like to tackle?

Well, I have plenty on my plate, I am not thinking about the next one. I can tell you I am very happy where I am. I like it, it’s a very nice industry; I like the airline industry. It’s a great place to be. I’m just looking forward to meeting all the challenges that we have, and we have many.

Your top three films of all time?

D-Day, Citizen Kane and the last one is The Artist. I’ve just realized that all of them are black and white!

Recently introduced to Virgin America’s Red IFE, FlightPath2D shows passengers detailed, interactive global satellite imagery. “It is an incredibly well designed, functional and easy-to-use product,” says Warren Hamilton, Virgin America’s manager of product development.

And Betria’s new browserbased, Interactive HTML Moving Map service is slated to be introduced this fall. Requiring no application download, the service supports the new generation of wireless IFE systems.

Stream-Blazer: ViaSat Electrifies the Bandwidth Revolution “It’s been a blazing fast 20 months,” says Don Buchman, vicepresident, commercial mobility for ViaSat. “We’ve installed 430 aircraft in that time frame and two airlines have signed up major streaming partners, Amazon Prime with JetBlue, and just yesterday, Virgin America with Netflix. That’s just 20 months after our very initial install in flight on JetBlue in December 2013.”

The company’s award-winning Exede In The Air in-flight connectivity leverages ViaSat’s on-orbit capacity that also serves multiple business segments. Three satellites are owned by ViaSat, with a fourth, the high-capacity Ka-band ViaSat-2, planned for launch in 2016. Buchman says owning its own “birds” differentiates his company from its competitors. “We all have good antennas, we all have good modems, but they’re about equal. The real advantage is in space,” he says.

“In these 20 months, we’ve transformed the industry – it hasn’t been an evolution, it’s been a revolution,” Buchman says.

SriLankan Airlines First to Offer Thales’ AVANT Live News & Weather App News lovers and weather geeks flying SriLankan Airlines’ new A330-300 fleet needn’t worry about missing the latest headline: The airline has become the world’s first to offer Thales’s AVANT Live News & Weather application.

“Last year, SriLankan’s new A330 fleet became the launch customer for the latest Thales AVANT in-flight entertainment system. Today, we are marking another first,” said Rakitha Jayawardena, CEO at SriLankan Airlines, via a press release.

Real time on-demand articles and forecasts from BBC News, AFP and AccuWeather will be transmitted via satellite to passengers using the fleet’s seatback systems. Evolving communications technologies are enabling airlines to offer up live content.

“There is a lot of demand for this type of application and it’s clearly within the strategy of SriLankan to improve the customer experience and to become a real premium airline in the region,” says Olivier Somme, VP, general manager, Avionics Domain, Thales Solutions Asia Pte Ltd.

Zodiac Celebrates 300 RAVE Installations It was only a year ago that Zodiac Inflight Innovations (ZII) celebrated the 100th installation of RAVE, a bundle of connectivity services for entertainment, wireless access points, mobile phone and Wi-Fi onboard, and now, just 12 months later, the aerospace company is announcing its 300th installation on an aircraft.

“This news shows how rapidly we’re progressing,” says Matt Smith, CEO of Zodiac Inflight Innovations. “The IFEC world has been dominated by two suppliers for too long, resulting in airlines not having the choice they deserve and limiting passengers’ access to the very best technology.”

The products within the RAVE family, Wireless, Cellular, Broadband and Centric IFE, can be purchased individually, providing airlines with a flexible solution that suits their needs.

Adding to the celebratory news, RAVE Centric IFE, the product that provides in-seat in-flight entertainment connectivity, recently received linefit offerability on Airbus A330 aircraft.

“The fact that so many airlines have already ordered RAVE Centric IFE for their brand new aircraft shows just how much they like the product, and our approach,” says Larry Girard, executive vice-president, Zodiac.

There’s One App For That: PaxLife’s Cloud10 “We have so may apps on our phones and tablets,” says Tim Letheren, vice-president, Advertising for the wireless media provider, PaxLife. After conducting extensive research with passengers, airlines and advertisers, the software and hardware company wagered that passengers would prefer a single media application that could be used on any airline that offers the platform. At the show, representatives have been demoing a sneak peek of the Cloud10 app, which offers passengers a

comprehensive engagement center.

The approach not only benefits travelers – airlines and advertisers stand to gain a lot from PaxLife’s fully networked vision. Rather than market toward one generic customer, the holistic data collected by the company via its registration forms allows them to package demographic media buys. Not only does this allow the targeting of ads to be refined – so an under-aged traveler isn’t shown liquor ads, for example – but it will also bring in bigger advertisers who are better able to reach their customer.

Tech Appeal: Kontron’s Fresh Take on Hardware “Everybody wants more data throughput to the passengers,” says RJ McLaren, product portfolio manager for Kontron, one of the top two embedded computer companies in the world. Leveraging over 30 years of design experience in avionics and other sectors, the company recently announced an upgrade to its onboard server and connectivity hardware. “We stay fresh on technology,” says McLaren.

Hidden from passengers, this kind of hardware is decidedly unsexy to anyone but engineers, but without it, passengers’ in-flight experience would be limited. Staying technologically fresh, Kontron’s new Cab-n-Connect A100 wireless access point (CWAP) supports the latest 802.11ac high-speed wireless protocol. Kontron’s earlier CWAP hardware can be easily upgraded, says McLaren.

“We’ve made everything backwards compatible, with the mounting and cabling,” he says.

And to improve connectivity on the ground, the ACE Flight 4600 General Purpose Airborne Server now includes 4G LTE capability. Kontron also offers a small form-factor server, the Cobalt 904, targeting the regional aircraft marketplace.
