Now Boarding: Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Prepares for Takeoff “We’ve been working for the past six years to bring broadband to the aviation world,â€? said Leo Mondale, president of Inmarsat Aviation at a private press event atop Marina Bay Sands 7XHVGD\ QLJKW á,W ZDV D PDVVLYH HʼnRUW DQG thousands of people have contributed to it. Now, the initial deployment of GX Aviation is done.â€?

Mondale announced that Lufthansa will be WKH ĹŠUVW DLUOLQH FXVWRPHU IRU *; $YLDWLRQ ZLWK service beginning next month in a soft launch. “Anyone lucky enough to be on one of the installed A320 aircraft will be able to log on and connect,â€? he said.

GX Aviation utilizes Inmarsat’s Global Xpress constellation of three advanced Ka-band satellites, all combining to provide global high-speed broadband connectivity. “It’s safe to say that hundreds of GX-equipped aircraft

will be operational by next year’s APEX EXPO,� said Mondale. He said that in addition to other airlines, a contract had recently been signed with a short- and long-haul European airline to equip more than 125 aircraft.

Inmarsat has also updated its legacy L-band communications service to provide a secure, WZR ZD\ Ĺ‹RZ RI ,3 EDVHG GDWD WR WKH FRFNSLW – a service launched as SwiftBroadband– Safety. “It’s L-Band, but it’s two generations more recent than the prevailing cockpit communications technology,â€? explained Mondale. “The new service can deliver a lot more throughput, and do it much more securely.â€?

Thales’ AVANT IFE to Foster Innovation on Emirates Boeing 777X Fleet

Emirates has selected Thales’ AVANT in-flight entertainment (IFE) solution for the first 50 of its fleet of 150 Boeing 777X aircraft. The order is the result of Thales’ commitment to establish Discovery Dubai, an innovations center in the United Arab Emirates, along with maintenance and repair facilities, enabling the airline to have more influence in the development of future projects.

“This experience will evolve as Emirates wants to evolve,” said Dominique Giannoni, chief executive officer, Thales InFlyt Experience. “AVANT has been designed from the start to follow this incremental evolution,” he said, citing the need to keep up with the fast-pace of technology.

Patrick Brannelly, divisional vice-president, Customer Experience, In-Flight Entertainment and Connectivity, Emirates, said Thales’

innovation was complementary to that of the Boeing 777X. “Disruption is when you challenge everything and think, ‘How can we do it better?’ When that aircraft delivers, it will be full of surprises, and I hope the biggest surprise will be the experience for the customers.”

While deliveries of Emirates’ first 777X aircraft are scheduled for 2020, Discover Dubai is expected to open in two years. “We need to be close to our airline customers and to Emirates,” said Giannoni. “Not only because we need to work hand in hand on a daily basis, but also to understand their context, their demographics, their strategy.”

AVANT, an open Android-based IFE system that also flies on other Gulf carriers, including Saudi Arabian Airlines, Kuwait Airways and Oman Air, is expected to be

the first IFE solution to debut on the 777X. However, Qatar Airways, which uses the AVANT IFE system on its fleet of Airbus A350s, is scheduled to be the launch customer of the aircraft.

Boeing 777X Offers Multiple Cabin Customization Options Anticipation is building for the full unveiling of Boeingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 777X cabin interiors. The enhanced version of the 777, slated to enter production in 2018, will have new engines, folding wingtips, composite wings, technology borrowed from WKH 'UHDPOLQHU DQG WRXFKVFUHHQ Ĺ&#x2039;LJKW GLVSOD\V IURP 5RFNZHOO &ROOLQV LQ WKH FRFNSLW ò D Ĺ&#x160;UVW IRU commercial pilots. But the aircraftâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s interiors are still mostly under wraps, despite the fact that a full mock-up lies in wait at Boeingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s facilities in Everett, Washington. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Architecturally, the 777X is new; philosophically, it is the same,â&#x20AC;? says Kent Craver, Boeingâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s regional director of Cabin Experience and Revenue Analysis. â&#x20AC;&#x153;That is key for us because the philosophy is solid.â&#x20AC;? Telefonix PDT Receives Supplemental Type Certificate for Summit Line Airlines flying Next-Gen Boeing 737s will now be able to install Telefonix PDT’s CabinACe wireless access point and Cabin Pinnacle general-purpose servers, under a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) that was just awarded to the Waukegan, Illinois-based aerospace connectivity supplier.

This STC is the first for Telefonix PDT’s Summit Line of in-flight entertainment and connectivity equipment, and includes the full aircraft installation kit, including trays, cabling, antennas and a control panel. The company is also working toward obtaining a similar STC for the Airbus A320 series.

“By providing our customers access to a royalty-free cabin Wi-Fi STC, Telefonix PDT is able to support an extremely rapid time to market, unmatched by any competitor in the industry today,” said Alan Manns, director of Business and Development at Telefonix PDT, in a press release.

Recognizing the growing Chinese connectivity market, Telefonix PDT plans to open a repair station in the country in early 2017. The Summit Line of products has also received a Radio Transmission Equipment Type Approval Certificate under the Chinese Ministry for Industry and Information Technology.

Zodiac Inflight Innovations’ Recent Gains Zodiac Inflight Innovations (Zii) has been achieving a lot in the past six months.

Since April, Zii has secured orders to install its RAVE AVOD wireless in-flight entertainment system on more than 200 aircraft, including four Airbus A350 customers, one A380 customer and 150 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft.

The company is also scheduled to begin installing Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band connectivity systems on the first of 200 aircraft starting in early 2017. Zii’s RAVE AVOD in-flight entertainment and Ka-band connectivity systems can be equipped as a complete package and are now offered as linefit options on the Airbus A320, A330, A380 and A350.

Work on procuring linefit approval for Boeing aircraft is currently underway.

How can the passenger experience be more accommodating to the growing number of female business travelers?

Generally speaking, women are more likely to share their experience with others (men may not be so talkative!). Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s important not simply to provide major moments of joy, but an accumulation of small, pleasant experiences.

One of the iPhone 7’s most talked-about features is its wireless AirPod earbuds. Bose, a passenger and airline favorite for eliminating jet-engine drone, recently cut the cord off its QuietComfort noise-canceling headphones, too. But there are challenges with wireless technology in the cabin.

“The hundreds of battery-powered devices that need to be recharged become a hindrance to the cabin crew,” says van der Loo. “And there are only so many simultaneous wireless data transmissions possible in a confined space using aircraft-safe frequencies.” Phitek’s Stratus headphones are a wired solution that work in tandem with its SmartJack equipment. Instead of building its noise-cancelation technology into the headset, the company integrated it into the audio jack, providing a more cost-effective and

maintenance-friendly solution. Meanwhile, van der Loo says the company is keeping its eye on developments in wireless technology.

Apple’s leapfrog toward wireless headphone technology isn’t itself noteworthy. Beats’ wireless headphones have long been popular among audiophiles. Rather, the iPhone 7’s switch from a 3.5mm audio jack to its trademarked Lightning connector marks Apple’s move to digital audio – and, as critics have noted, a more proprietary framework. Current headphone jacks and ports rely on more than 50-year-old analog technology to convert digital MP3s for listening. By shifting to its Lightning connector, the company hopes to usher in a wave of high-quality audio. Others endorse USB-C port technology, which is currently available on Samsung and Google devices.

But consumers may not be ready for Apple’s new features just yet, which is likely why the company includes an adapter for its 3.5mm jack. For the 3.5mm audio jack that’s on aircraft seatbacks and armrests, the end is likely more distant.

“The 3.5mm jack is dominant in all markets and we believe this trend will continue for the foreseeable future,” says Mark Reed, director of Business Development, North America, IFPL. “However, we are closely monitoring the adoption of consumer technology and the [inflight entertainment and connectivity] response.”

The promise of digital audio, on the other hand, has spurred on the innovation of headphone technology. “Historically, the most important factors [for headphones] have included comfort, sound quality and durability.

However, with the advent of digital audio, there is a growing focus on new features,” says Mark Donaldson, CEO of Soundchip, who counts double-tap functionality, VoIP, digital surround sound and digital connectors such as USB-C as examples. His company worked with Panasonic and LongProsper to deliver quality audio through its Serenity S1H range of headphones, which were unveiled yesterday at APEX EXPO.
