Panasonic Avionics Launches Five Wellness Products

Flight times of close to 20 hours are now a reality, putting passenger health and wellness front and center for airlines. With this in mind, Panasonic Avionics unveiled details about its Wellness product suite, one of the four pillars of its NEXT platform.

The Wellness suite includes five products: premium lighting, active noise cancellation, nanoe air cleansing, a Detalytics health app and Mimi personalized audio. But what do each of these entail?

According to Panasonic, the premium lighting will allow passengers to select their

own LED lighting scenarios. “We can do that automatically for passengers to tie it into mealtime, entertainment, as well as into sleep or circadian rhythm,” said Andrew Mohr, Panasonic Avionics’ head of Innovation.

For the active noise control product, Panasonic worked with seat manufacturers to create 15 decibels of noise reduction within the seat environment, while the nanoe air cleansing technology creates nano drops of ionized water 15,000 times smaller than a human hair to remove airborne pathogens and odors. >

The Detalytics health app, meanwhile, will use artificial intelligence to deliver accurate recommendations on different aspects of a passengers’ health and wellness. Last but not least, the Mimi audio technology will use a specialized algorithm to test and tune headphones to a passengers’ exact hearing capability.

into what Mohr said is an “enormous opportunity.” Panasonic Avionics says it has undisclosed launch customers for all the products, including commitments for 2019 and 2020 deliveries. “We’re not wellness experts, but what we’re really good at is building platforms, and so we have built one that wellness and health advocates and experts will be able to endorse and enrich,” Mohr said.

Airbus Bets on Connected Cabins for Happier Passengers and Crew What happens when aircraft seats can talk to the galley, and overhead bins can talk to the entertainment screens?

Airbus is showing off its Connected Cabin concept at APEX EXPO this week, highlighting the possibilities available in an increasingly digital cabin environment.

The system is expected to deliver benefits to passengers and to airlines, though what it ultimately looks like in service could be several years away.

Vice-president, Cabin Marketing, Ingo Wuggetzer explained that the ecosystem is being provided by Airbus but that other vendors will build on top of it. “We connect all the elements of the cabin

wirelessly, collect all the data and provide that to the airline to do data analytics to reduce costs and improve ancillary revenue opportunities,” he said.

Tracking whether seats are reclined or whether the life jacket is properly in place can improve safety on board while reducing the work burden for cabin crew. Such efforts are being tested in cooperation with Recaro, using the iSeat concept program.

From a sales perspective, real-time inventory management aids the crew in managing sales such as premium meals in the economy cabin. Rather than using hand signals and shouting across the

cabin, flight attendants could consult a linked, digital sales system that keeps data current across multiple zones of the aircraft.

While these concepts are expected to evolve as airlines and passengers provide feedback, senior vice-president, Cabin and Cargo Programs, Geoffrey Pinner is clear that it is not vaporware: “We’re flying our A350 testbed (MSN002) with the galley monuments. It is emerging technology, but it is being flown.” That is currently a Rockwell Collins product but Airbus expects that the framework will extend to all vendors, across all types, as the program matures.

Entertainment While You Wait: Immfly Takes IFE to the Lounge Following the success of its wireless in-flight entertainment portal, Immfly is now introducing Immfly Lounge, a solution for travelers to start a movie on the ground and continue watching it using the same platform on board. A server located in the airport lounge or gate enables streaming of all types of content, with ancillary-revenue-driving options to improve what Immfly calls “day of flight” net promoter scores. While travelers wait to board their flight, they can upgrade their seat, order onboard food or drinks and shop for duty-free goods to be delivered to their home.

“Every action that could only be done on board can now start pre-flight,” said María Cardenal, Product and Digital Services director, Immfly. “The airline has more chance to engage passengers and earn revenue.”

Thales AVANT to Fly on American Airlines Boeing Dreamliners American Airlines’ upcoming fleet of Boeing 787-8 Dreamliners will fly with the Thales AVANT in-flight entertainment system.

American’s business-class passengers will have access to a 17-inch full HD Flex screen and Thales Avii controller that doubles as a second screen, and economy and premium economy passengers will have 10-inch and 12-inch Fit HD screens, respectively. Joining American’s existing fleet of Dreamliners, the 22 additional 787-8s will enter service in early 2020.

Low Earth orbit satellite constellations promise a significant boost in capacity and drop in communications latency.

We’re still 3–5 years from viable networks of those satellites in the sky but Global Eagle is working to ensure its current generation of connectivity hardware will be ready. The company will begin testing its Ka-band solution on its Albatross flying test bed with Telesat’s Phase 1 LEO satellite in October.

With only one LEO satellite in orbit today, the company will be evaluating 16

satellite handoff performance between the LEO Telesat Phase 1 and the geostationary (GEO) Anik F3 in orbit.

This handoff LEO-GEO profile is as important as the transition between LEO satellites, given the current orbiting satellite infrastructure. Global Eagle is not giving up on the GEO investment it has today, said vicepresident, Aviation Sales, Mike Moeller, adding that the mix is about getting “the right data on the right pipe.” GEO still delivers an efficient means to move

large volumes of data, such as live video streams, for multiple aircraft.

And, while Global Eagle expects newer antenna technology will evolve for future installations, current gimbaled antennae must be compatible with the new LEO constellation. The company expects the antennae will support that need, with retrace times between satellites below 1.5 seconds on average and tightly integrated engineering efforts with the satellite provider.

American is the first airline to partner with the meditation and sleep app, which was named the best iPhone app of the year by Apple in 2017. The content was developed for the airline based on research by Tamara Levitt, head of Mindfulness at Calm, who has been practicing meditation for more than 20 years. Three sessions were created specifically to help passengers relax during travel: deep breathing, focusing on specific sensations and mental body scanning. Calm’s soothing nature scenes are also integrated into the airline’s new boarding videos.

The IPTV solution delivers multiple channels of live television programming to aircraft, with the content being sent to passengers’ Wi-Fi enabled personal electronic devices or integrated into an airline’s seatback entertainment system.

Inflight Media Digital (IMD), a subsidiary of Inflight Media Marketing (IMM) International, known for its AirSAS in-flight ad-serving solution, has launched AirPMP, a new marketplace that enables advertisers to browse the ad-space inventory available on airline seatback and wireless entertainment systems.

While AirSAS places ads based on passenger nationality, age, gender or route, AirPMP matches airline offers and advertiser demands to optimize the buying and selling of ad space. Real-time statistics on number of impressions and click-through rate are updated at every aircraft takeoff and landing.

Spafax IQ Takes Off With Air Canada as Launch Customer Spafax has announced Air Canada as the launch customer for Spafax IQ, the company’s in-flight entertainment and connectivity analytics platform. The solution will provide the airline with a set of dashboards showing category and item performance, media and advertising performance and cost per engagement. Spafax IQ crunches these datasets to provide a customized “IQ Index” that assesses content performance against its unique key performance indicators and content strategy.

Viasat Lands Two New Airline Customers French all-business-class airline La Compagnie and Mexican flag carrier Aeromexico have become the latest airlines to join the roster of Viasat’s customers.

La Compagnie is set to install Viasat’s in-flight connectivity solution on two brandnew Airbus A321neo, thereby offering each of the 76 passengers on board unlimited Wi-Fi.

The aircraft are scheduled to begin operating La Compagnie’s two daily flights between New York and Paris in April 2019.

Viasat also announced linefit installations on board Aeromexico’s new Boeing 737 MAXs, with plans to deploy its Ka-band connectivity service on 18 aircraft of the type and the option of increasing this number to 60. After evaluating Viasat’s offering against that of its competitors, Aeromexico cited the ability to tap into the ViaSat-2 satellite as one of the deciding factors.

Portable can stream in-flight entertainment (IFE) content to 100 passengers – double that of the hardware’s previous capability. It can also be combined with BoardConnect Portable/Link, a connectivity solution from Lufthansa Technik, to enable low-bandwidth activities such as messaging and online payments in flight. It requires an antenna but can be installed without the need for an STC. Also key to the new BoardConnect Portable is a portal that enables airlines to monitor the operational health, usage statistics and location of their mobile streaming units. “With so many moving parts – and IFE boxes on so many aircraft – we focused on making asset management much smoother than it was in the past, so airlines can spend less time operating them and more time streaming entertainment.”

RebelRoam Makes Public Wi-Fi Connections Safer, Faster and More Efficient RebelRoam launched a smartphone app, called RebelRocket, that solves three problems often associated with public Wi-Fi networks (both in flight and on the ground): security, speed and cost. “It automatically encrypts content to make any public Wi-Fi network secure,” said Piret Vahter, marketing manager of RebelRoam. “It gives users the choice to block ads and malware, thereby dramatically reducing webpage load time in high-latency wireless networks. Lastly, it optimizes video streaming, therefore giving more bang

for your buck on metered networks.”

The app does not provide a Wi-Fi connection, but rather enhances the experience offered by an existing Wi-Fi network, Vahter said: “For example, a passenger logs in to the in-flight Wi-Fi network and then turns on the RebelRocket app to enjoy security, [a faster connection] and less data consumption.” After disembarking, travelers can continue to benefit from secure, public Wi-Fi at airports and hotels, as well as reduced cellular roaming charges abroad.

TOUCH Showcases Data Analytics Tool To diversify its offering as a content service provider (CSP), TOUCH has been working on an analytics tool to help airlines gain more out of the data collected on board their aircraft. “We developed a tool that could bring more intelligence to curation,” said André Valera, director of Business Development, TOUCH. According to Valera, airlines and their CSPs tend to select content based on the external metrics of a flight, such as the passenger demographic or destination. “What we do is analyze the usage data – not only how many people saw a specific movie, but how they behaved while being immersed in the IFE experience? We do that through our very own process that brings a wider view on content analysis,” he said.
