Panasonic Unveils New Aeronautical Antenna Weight is everything in commercial aviation, and size definitely does matter. When it comes to Panasonic’s new aeronautical antenna, revealed at the EXPO yesterday, it’s a case of the smaller the better. Weighing in at just 140 pounds, it’s a fraction of what current antennas come in at and when it hits the market in 2016 it will have the lowest drag and weight impact of any other product in the industry.

(N&SS) and will deliver Panasonic’s eXConnect broadband in-flight Wi-Fi service. Electronically steered with no moving parts, it’s far more reliable than its mechanical cousins.

David Bruner, vice-president of Global Communications Services, unveiled the new technology yesterday, proudly boasting that it’s smaller and lighter than anything else on the market: “It can fit on even the smallest single aisle aircraft – Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier, Embraer. That’s exactly our target market. I call this winglets for satellite communication,” Bruner said.

While it’s not tuned for high

latitude flying, widebody carriers who fly their aircraft on shorter routes, such as 777 operators in Asia, may also find it a particularly viable choice for their services.

“We are going to see some crossover into widebody, [where] they operate in the right places like Japan and China,” Bruner said.

While the antenna won’t be available for sale until 2016, Bruner confirmed they already have

serious expressions of interest from European, Middle Eastern and Chinese carriers.

“Where is this targeted? North America, Asia, Western Europe, anywhere in Brazil. Places you have high concentrations of regional aircraft traffic. China is going to need tons of aircraft in the next 20 years, they’re all going to need Wi-Fi and they’re going to have this antenna,” Bruner said.

PAC Closes in on Near Field Communication In another industry first for Panasonic Avionics this week, they announced that they will be debuting Near Field Communications (NFC) contactless technology as early as next year. While industry experts had estimated that NFC was still several years away from the in-flight market, Panasonic are confident they can bring it to the cabin by 2015.

NFC will allow a number of new conveniences ranging from high value purchases to crew check-in, easier recognition of frequent flyers and the pairing of personal devices with embedded IFE systems.

Airbus Re-Pitches Standards of Comfort [Continued from cover] Airbus’ vision of “Passenger at Heart, Airline in Mind” is focused on the in-flight experience. Zuzana Hrnkova, head of Aircraft Interiors Marketing, says that new A320 Increased Cabin Efficiency (ICE) options will “enable an airline to increase revenue without compromising comfort.” With the goal of adding seats, Airbus first did surveys and configuration testing with 40,000 people. Not surprisingly, they found that the relationship between seat

“It’s simple mathematics,” says Hrnkova, “and today, the seat designs have improved in order to create more room for knees and legs.” She says that a wider, new generation, low-profile seat can allow for reduced pitch and additional seats in the cabin, with equivalent comfort.

To make additional room for seating beyond what can be achieved just by re-pitching, Airbus has developed a re-configuration of the rear gallery and lavatory area.

In service since late 2013, SpaceFlex v1 adds three seats, and the just-announced Space-Flex v2 can

provide up to six additional seats, depending on an airline’s galley space requirements. Both versions include a lavatory accessible by Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM).

Airbus has also been working with regulatory authorities to reassess the exit limit for the A320 series. Approval is expected in early 2015, and with the addition of a wider escape slide on doors 1L and 4L, maximum capacity of the A320 will increase from 180 to 189 passengers. The A321neo will also benefit from the ICE program, along with a new door configuration available Q2 2018. Door 2 will be eliminated, one standard overwing exit will be added with an option for a second to be activated, and Door 3 will be moved back by four frames. Maximum capacity will increase from 220 in the current A321, to 240 passengers in the ICE-optimized A321neo.

A new pivoting overhead stowage bin for the A320 series has also been introduced by Airbus.

Promising to increase luggage capacity by 60 percent, and with a 10 percent increased volume over the current A320 bins, the new bins will be launched with the delivery of the first of Delta Air Lines’ A321s in Q1 2016.

Rockwell Increases Bandwidth With Ka-Broadband After their successful acquisition of transport communications giant ARINC in December, Rockwell Collins has been showing off their newest and most exciting in-flight entertainment and connectivity offerings at the EXPO this week.

The company recently signed on with Inmarsat, using their latest Ka-broadband network to give clients the best service available. The new partnership is a further enhancement to Rockwell’s already proven in-flight connectivity platform, ARINC Cabin Connect.

The increased bandwidth from Inmarsat means exciting new services for passengers such as streaming live television as well as voice and text services.

Alexis Hickox, Rockwell’s senior director of Aviation Services for Europe, Middle East and Africa, is excited by the new partnership. “It’s the next generation of satellite communication, to enable cabin connectivity to take it to the next level, giving 50mbps per second up to the aircraft, which means you can stream TV and provide a lot more content, a lot more customization for the airline,” Hickox said.

Hickox went on to say that at this speed there is no interruption to the service, and that it gives passengers and airlines the very best service available today.

“There’s no patchiness, we’re providing a very robust service to the airline which really wraps well into our heritage,” Hickox said.

Plug and Play on Avianca and Turkish Airlines Turkish Airlines and Avianca Airlines have selected Video Technology Service’s plug and play VTS Digital Video Player (DVP) to replace the outdated VHS players on board their A319, A320, A321 aircraft. The eight-pound, hard drive-based multimedia player is compatible with VTRs installed on many aircraft and is capable of carrying up to 120 hours of video, all of which can be quickly exchanged between a PC and the device.

At this year’s EXPO, VTS is also displaying their latest in-flight entertainment solution, the VTS Sky-SIS (Seat Integrated System), which streams high-quality HD video content to tablets mounted throughout the cabin.

Thales Partners With Honeywell’s JetWave Ka-band “We’re having a big year,” says Dominique Giannoni, chief executive officer of the Inflight Entertainment and Connectivity arm of Thales. “By the end of 2014, our AVANT Inflight Entertainment System will be installed in 12 different aircraft types, with 11 airlines.” The latest addition is Royal Jordanian Airlines, which has the system in its just-delivered Boeing 787-8.

AVANT is based on an Android open-platform operating system (OS). “The main breakthrough that we are bringing with AVANT is a passenger experience that is ‘tablet-like.’ It’s very responsive, very fluid, and has all the pinch and swipe functions that you’re used to,” says Giannoni.

The IFE system has been in service since February 2014, on China Southern Airlines’ Boeing 777s. AVANT is fully scalable from smaller, single-aisle aircraft right up to the

mega-sized Airbus A380. Giannoni says, “The core architecture has an engine that is very responsive. Then you add modules depending on your choices.” AVANT’s Android OS will also give operators the ability to add and upgrade applications far more quickly than in legacy IFEs. Thales has been busy with its recent acquisition of LiveTV from JetBlue, which Giannoni says is now fully integrated into the business. And the company just partnered with Honeywell Aerospace to combine Honeywell’s JetWave Ka-band satellite connectivity with Thales’ cabin network solutions for the Airbus A350 XWB and other aircraft. The JetWave onboard hardware will connect to Inmarsat’s GX Aviation network, with anticipated 50Mbps data rates, global coverage, and consistent highbandwidth connections.

“We’ve bypassed Ku-band and have gone directly to Ka-band because passengers want to have the quality of access in the air that’s the same as they have on the ground, otherwise their disappointment is great,” says Giannoni.

“What we don’t want, as an airline partner, is to disappoint the airline and the passenger. This is why we’re not compromising on our technical choices,” he added.

Executive Chefs Compete for Cooking Honors This year’s IFSA Chef’s Competition saw four teams vying for the honor of “Best In-Flight Executive Chef,” and was ably hosted by Gate Gourmet’s Chef Bob. Each team was led by a professional and experienced culinary expert, assisted by a local student chef.

The teams created an onboardready appetizer and entrée, using five ingredients unknown to the chefs before the competition. This year’s basket contained kale, Maine lobster, flatiron steak, bulgur wheat and shelled pistachios. And to help them

The dishes were judged on taste, presentation and originality.

Flying can be exciting at any age but when you’re a kid it can seem magical. With no worries about legroom they board with wide-eyes and a taste for adventure, but then 15 minutes after take-off they’re asking, “Are we there yet?” It used to be up to Mom and Dad to pack a bag of tricks to keep the kids busy but now, with wireless connectivity and in-flight entertainment options galore, parents are happy to plug their kids in and let the screens keep them out of trouble.

Seventy-eight percent of parents surveyed by Honeywell’s in-flight Wi-Fi survey said wireless availability played a role in their flight selection.

Interactive games are gaining popularity over movies, says Jörg Schiffmann, marketing agent for G.U.E. Tech. “Kids want to play.” G.U.E allows access on personal devices or in-flight systems, which means kids playing games at home can continue to build on their high scores in-flight. With over 300 games in their catalogue

there’s something for ‘kids of all ages,’ including education games and interactive movies that prompt kids to choose their own ending.

Although technology is king, kids still love toys. Buzz airline product specialists also have a focus on in-flight solutions for children, and enhance the travel experience through well-known retail brands and beloved cartoon characters.

Isabelle Bégin, managing director at Skeye, believes third party partnerships are making an in-flight comeback. Sesame Street Studios will be launching a program for children, packaging a toy and coloring book that integrate with interactive games, e-books and videos using the IFE system. This cross promotion allows children to take a souvenir home from the flight, allowing the journey – and the brand – experience live on.

BoardConnect Keeps Passengers Connected

Tablet technology is developing rapidly with new models coming to market every year. Lufthansa Systems, consulting and IT experts in the global aviation industry, have developed a Seat Integrated Tablet Solution, allowing airlines to integrate the latest tablets with BoardConnect wireless technology easily, without the hassle of extra wiring in the cabin or seats.

We sat down with Norbert Müller, senior vice-president at BoardConnect, to take a look at the prototype. “With all the new wireless technology coming into the market we recognized that airlines still needed an option to have something in the seat back,” he explained.

“These tablets can be easily upgraded every two to three years instead of replacing the

whole system every 10 years as airlines have done in the past.”

BoardConnect is compatible with all device types and gives passengers the option to bring their own device or use the seat-integrated tablet provided by the airline. The high-speed broadband connectivity enabled by the BoardConnect platform remains the same.

A feature of the BoardConnect app is that it is accessible on the ground. Prior to your flight you can see what movies will be available and what shopping sites you’ll have access to in-flight.

Frequent flyers have the option to create a profile and save their preferences, personalizing the information and entertainment available to them for a more seamless travel experience.

NFL Goes Global With IMG Media

National Football League fans who are flying internationally can rejoice! Thanks to a new agreement between IMG Media and the NFL, extensive live coverage of games will be carried on Sports 24, IMG’s global 24-hour live sports channel. From the comfort of their seats, fans will be able to watch games throughout the season and the playoffs, right up to Super Bowl XLIX on February 1, 2015.

Sports 24 is available on select international airlines equipped with the Panasonic exTV In-Flight Entertainment System.

Richard Wise, senior vicepresident at IMG Media, says the addition of NFL is a natural draw: “Sports fans are fanatic,” he laughs, “they say, ‘You’re showing that game? I’m booking that flight.’”

BAE Systems IntelliCabin Houses Multi-Tasking Potential BAE Systems’ IntelliCabin interactive demonstration on Tuesday afternoon put a Samsung Galaxy Tab S10 in the hands of EXPO media attendees and let us loose to play with the tablet-based IFE system. Testing out movies, publications and placing imaginary food orders soon had the group engrossed as we explored the offerings within the ultra-light tablet.

“This system is really forward-thinking,” said Jared Shoemaker, director of Cabin Programs for BAE. “The airlines don’t own the tablets. We lease the tablets from Samsung which mean they’re updated every three years as per our agreement.” BAE knows tablets will continue to develop and the option to remove the tablet from the seatback allows for future deployment of movement-based activities or gaming, like car racing.

IntelliCabin’s IFE system offers the convenience of a drop-in Samsung tablet at every seat, as well as wireless support of passengers’ own devices, complete with in-flight connectivity. The tablets feature an impressive range of movies, TV shows, a moving map, games, digital publications and menus as well as the capability for real-time news and sports. The added feature of a picture-in-picture option allows passengers to order snacks while keeping their entertainment on the screen.

The technology is fast, clear and intuitive, and best of all it responds to the lightest of touches, sure to make the passenger in front of you blissfully unaware each time you select a new function.

Shoemaker noted, “We want to create something that passengers enjoy using.”

Trends In Coverings & Fabrics The aesthetics of an airplane cabin can have a big effect on your state of mind, and airlines take many factors into consideration when selecting interior decor. Garish color combinations and loud patterns can cause discomfort, and are usually avoided by big carriers in favor of more muted tones and simple designs.

German fabric manufacturer rohi’s latest offering is anything but simple. And yet it has been extremely well received in only a short space of time – so much so that it sold to a major carrier at its recent showing in Hamburg after just one hour.

The design of rohi’s latest covering is especially unique because each length of the new material is nine meters long, with fabric for each seat cut randomly. This means no one seat

appears the same as another. Once it is laid into a cabin, it comes together to provide an almost shimmering effect.

“The idea was to create a seat which looks different for everyone, to cut [fabric] at random ... it’s almost 100 percent sure that each and every seat will look different,” rohi’s managing director Philipp Dahm said.

Senior designer for rohi, Kathrin Ott is responsible for the design that has aroused so much interest.

“You have one fabric with a huge repeat of different patterns, I always say this is a melting pot of different patterns, just like the airplane is a melting pot of cultures and people,” Ott said.

In a further development in cabin textiles rohi’s partner, family-owned carpeting company

Anker, have developed a new concept with an Italian yarn manufacturer. Listening to airlines who asked for something lighter and more durable than traditional wool products, Anker has created a product made from recycled nylon that is both lighter and easier to keep clean.

Anker’s director of Aviation Sales, Alexander von Fuchs-Nordhoff, explained that not only is the new carpet lighter and more durable, it is also environmentally friendly.

“We listened very carefully to the airlines and we developed a new carpet with a yarn manufacturer. This yarn manufacturer is collecting waste from all over the world, mainly waste like fishing nets from oceans, for example, and they produce a first grade nylon out of it for us,” Fuchs-Nordhoff said.

Tuning in on Music Licensing & Rights In-flight music licensing has been a hot topic in recent months, with a number of airlines making changes to their onboard offer due to changing rights criteria. Monday’s Music Licensing Panel likely raised more questions than answers, but represented a major step forward in terms of connecting major labels and airlines.

APEX Experience magazine publisher Al St. Germain moderated a panel featuring Jackie Church of PRS for Music, James Finley of Sony Music Entertainment, Teresa Stafford-Scherer of BMI and Bryan Stone from Universal Music Group.

This was the first APEX session in many years to feature major music label representatives.

St. Germain opened the panel

by noting the significant changes to the overall music industry and how they have affected both people’s listening habits and the economics of music. He also noted how carriers around the world have made audio-on-demand (AOD) libraries a significant part of their IFE offerings.

Stone added, “We’ve seen the way people experience music change from collection to experience … the experience has changed to millions of songs at their fingertips versus a record on a shelf.” Finley also noted the need for business models to keep up with technology, stating, “third parties are creating new experiences we haven’t thought of yet.”

Why is this so hard?

The complicated nature of inflight music licensing stands in fairly stark contrast to the way video content is procured. A great deal of the frustration expressed at Monday’s Audio Licensing Roundtable comes from a lack of clarity on this issue.

Much of this can be attributed to the international nature of the IFE business. In the United States, master rights for inflight use are sourced directly from the labels, either by an airline or their content service provider. However, in other countries, record labels are often represented by a collections organization that is responsible for extending the master rights. To make things even more complicated, each carrier needs to be sure that master rights are cleared in their home territory, even though their production work might be carried out elsewhere. Top that all off with differing worldwide copyright laws and royalty categories, and it’s obvious that a lot more work needs to be done on this issue. The APEX Board has stated that this will be a priority in the coming months.

A number of international carriers raised serious concern that recent changes to label agreements with local collections agencies meant they would be at legal risk if they continued to offer AOD libraries. Both Finley and Stone acknowledged that collections agency agreements in various

territories needed to be addressed, but their inability to give specific information regarding those arrangements definitely frustrated some in the audience.

Following the session at the APEX Annual General Meeting, APEX President Alfy Veretto announced the Board’s intention to create an industry task force to address audio licensing and hopefully create more clarity for association members.

David: I say tablet.

Nita: I say seatback.

David: I say tablet … then put it on the seatback tray. Then you can go onto the tablet if you want and you can read newspapers and email. It’s a win/win.

Nita: Yeah but the tablet slips off, there’s turbulence, there’s no room for it.

Steve: I’m thinking cellphone or smartphone because it’s small enough to where you won’t spill your drink on it, and especially if you’ve got [glasses] you can see from distances…

Game Launch Trends: Casual, Wireless and Branded

Global Eagle Entertainment (DTI) GEE’s latest catalogue is comprised of 25 percent new releases, including several branded options, like Pixar’s Monsters University: Hide & Sneak.

Melissa Pauléat, director of Marketing and Communications explains that branded games appeal to passengers because they’re familiar. GEE has also focused on launching games for specific regional markets. Ken Ken, a popular Japanese game, is great for puzzle-prone gamers.

If you catch Melissa gaming, she’ll likely be playing 2048, a singleplayer puzzle game released this year where the objective is to slide numbered tiles together to create the 2048 tile. Has she gotten 2048 yet? Nope – but she’s working on it!

We checked-in with the in-flight gaming industry to see what trends are hot right now, and casual titles for the busy traveler are certainly high on the list.

Ensemble media As the most recent corporate entrant into the in-flight gaming market, most of Ensemble’s games are fairly new, none of them dating later than 2012. They’ve recently partnered with Tingly Games and Playtouch, among others, to provide diverse catalogues of HTML5 games compatible with wireless streaming needs – and according to director Mario Poirier, the interest shown in these games has exceeded his expectations.

What type of game does managing director, Daniel Harris, like to play?

Casual titles like Candy Crush are easy to jump into for those with busy schedules. Mario is also partial to casual games, especially when they have a physics element, as Angry Bird does.

Virgin Atlantic Connects with Gogo Today, Gogo has officially announced that they have signed Virgin Atlantic as their first European partner. The airline’s entire fleet of aircraft will be retrofitted with Gogo’s 2Ku in-flight connectivity solution – making them the first airline to retrofit their full fleet with this solution. Gogo’s service will draw satellite support from SES and Intelsat. Virgin Atlantic currently features Aeromobile’s communications service on its A330 aircraft.

Aeromexico became the first airline to commit to Gogo’s 2Ku connectivity service this August, with plans for the service and Gogo Vision to be made available on at least 58 Embraer and Boeing 737 aircraft by 2015.

DTI-Solutions’ eReader wireless system is currently flying in over 150 aircraft worldwide. Recognizing that it’s “always about the content,” DTI has partnered with newspaper and magazine aggregators to provide over 5,000 magazines, newspapers and books in over 50 languages. The company works with an airline client to analyze route and passenger demographics, and

ensures that the most relevant and popular publications are available to the carrier’s passengers. DTI’s Content Management Team can assist an airline with content selection and upload, or the airline can do the work themselves using DTI’s loading processes. DTI says that eReader is easy to integrate and is a self-contained “add-on” to any portal. Content is wirelessly streamed to passengers’ devices that use all major browsers and operating systems, with full support for tablet and smartphone gesture controls. eReader can also be integrated into connected systems.

DMD’s Digiredoo service platform has recently been expanded to allow passengers to access digital newspaper and magazine content from home to gate. Airlines can now offer their passengers downloads of premium content pre-departure, whereas previously this service was restricted to airside lounge passengers.

What are you most looking forward to at this year’s EXPO? Getting together with all the people I’m interested in speaking to.

One item you can’t travel without?

My plastic shoehorn. I keep it in the outside pocket of my overnight bag so I can slip into my shoes after security. Even though I have Global Entry I still take my shoes off all the time on international flights.

Last place you traveled for fun?

I was in Istanbul. It started as business but I cooked it so it would definitely include a weekend of leisure and it was fantastic.

Favorite meal?

In Istanbul my favorite food was the mussels that they pull out of the Bosphorus and sell for 50c in the streets. You eat them off a big tin plate and they squeeze fresh lemon on them as you eat them.

Old TV shows you can tolerate re-runs of?

I don’t do many but I guess I would say I’m surprised my kids never discovered the

classic Warner Brothers cartoons. Those I could do over and over.

Biggest challenge you’ve had to face at work?

Keeping the design team as excited about a project on the last day as they were on the first.

Two things you miss about home when traveling?

Cooking. I’ll make spaghetti as soon as I get home, no matter the time. It drives my family crazy.

Also, the fit of the seat in my car. It’s the first thing that tells me I’m home and I’m always surprised at how comfortable it is.

Fail-proof travel tip?

The route I take on the drive to LAX, and where I park for my coffee on the way so I never get a ticket.
