Biggest challenge while writing this story Narrowing down dozens of excellent recommendations to just 20. Next destination Prague, to sample beer and help my friend turn 36. To relax when I travel, I find a good spa and schvitz with locals. When not contributing to Air Canada enRoute, I’m working on a novel called Sideshow. It’s a multigenerational story that spans 80 years, about two families reckoning with history.  Je vis à Berlin. Je n’aurais pu faire ce reportage sans une carte d’accès illimité aux transports en commun. Plus grand défi du reportage Ne retenir que 20 suggestions parmi les dizaines qui m’ont été fournies. Prochaine destination Prague, pour goûter des bières et aider mon ami à fêter ses 36 ans. Pour me détendre en voyage, je trouve un spa où suer avec les résidents. Quand je ne collabore pas à Air Canada enRoute, je travaille sur un roman intitulé Sideshow. C’est l’histoire de deux familles sur 80 ans qui confrontent le passé.

I’ve loved sleeping in tents ever since. Last holiday Venice. I hadn’t been since I was a kid, but the pigeons and tourists are still there and the city is just as beautiful. When not taking photos for Air Canada enRoute, I collaborate with Afar, Dwell and Wired.  Je vis à Berlin. LETTER OF THE MONTH / LA LETTRE DU MOIS I love travelling and plan on celebrating the end of my undergraduate degree this year with a trip. The January issue provided inspiration on where to go thanks to the “10 Trips for 2017” article.

Being raised in Montreal, I was happy to see my hometown featured. It was also great to learn about places that weren’t on my radar, like Asheville, North Carolina – who can say no to good craft beer?

As an avid skier and history buff, I found the article “High Prospects” in the January issue of Air Canada enRoute to be the perfect blend of winter adventure and glimpse of the past. The imagery of mining tunnels scattered underneath the slopes has placed Park City Mountain Resort high on my list of must-ski destinations.

Since I’m from British Columbia’s Sunshine Coast, I don’t fully participate in winter, but on a recent flight back from the Nisga’a territory, I read the December issue of Air Canada enRoute and was inspired to reconsider winter travel. After two days of happily replacing my usual winter grey with white, a trip to see interactive art on Minnesota’s frozen lakes (“Art on Ice”) has new appeal. Now to convince my partner to trade a warm getaway for snowy adventures.

ANGEL’S SHARE N E W YO R K Tucked away on the second floor of the izakaya Village Yokocho, this speakeasy serves up solid cocktails, including a killer shiso julep. There are a few rules, though: Groups of more than four aren’t allowed, and neither is talking loudly or drinking while standing up. To avoid waiting for a table, go in the afternoon or head to the recently opened second location above the nearby Sharaku Restaurant. / Niché à l’étage de l’izakaya Village Yokocho, ce speakeasy sert de solides cocktails, dont un julep au shiso à se damner. Il y a cependant des règles : les groupes de plus de quatre sont refusés, et il est interdit de boire debout et de parler fort. Allez-y l’après-midi pour une chance d’avoir une table ou rendez-vous à l’autre bar récemment ouvert par les mêmes proprios, situé au-dessus du resto Sharaku, tout près.

Whenever I think of Berlin, I end up dreaming about the borscht at Pasternak Restaurant in Prenzlauer Berg – so perfectly seasoned that I ordered seconds.

The Russian-Jewish comfort food at this little spot was the perfect antidote to the wintry weather that gripped the German capital throughout my stay. I never would have discovered it, however, had it not been for a recommendation from Matthew Fox, the contributor who wrote this month’s guide to Berlin (see page 79). This city’s story, teeming as it is with cafés, restaurants and tiny bars that seem impossible to find at first glance, is best told by word of mouth.

And to further mystify travellers, some of the most well-known neighbourhoods, like Mitte or Neukölln, are often subdivided into smaller enclaves clustered around a single street or square. That’s why we asked five expat Canadians who live in Berlin to help us sort it all out. They take us to their favourite spots in their micro-neighbourhoods – or Kieze, as they’re known over there.

In the Yukon, about as far as you can get from the buzz of Berlin, we introduce you to a totally different kind of guide (see page 60). Every summer, three and a half hours northwest of Whitehorse, James Allen, the former chief of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, opens his camp to non-native visitors; here, he and his family impart his people’s traditional know-how. This is how our writer Linda Besner got to experience life on the trapline: tanning, beading and dining on a memorable dish of gopher-fried rice.

And all of this with the snowy summits of the St. Elias range – the highest coastal mountains on the planet – off in the distance.

Besner’s wonderfully poetic account, along with the images captured by photographer Kari Medig, of a camp gearing up for its third season of operations inspire an early kick-off to our summer vacation planning. Until then, I’ll stay warm thinking about the creamy, vodka-laced hot chocolate that capped my meal at Pasternak on a frosty Saturday night in March. 

Chaque fois que je pense à Berlin, je ne peux m’empêcher de rêver au bortch réconfortant (et si parfaitement assaisonné que j’en ai commandé un deuxième bol) du restaurant Pasternak, situé dans Prenzlauer Berg.

La chaleureuse cuisine judéo-russe de ce petit établissement était l’antidote parfait à l’hiver qui s’éternisait pendant mon séjour dans la capitale allemande, et jamais je ne l’aurais goûtée si notre journaliste Matthew Fox, qui signe ce mois-ci notre guide berlinois (p. 79), ne me l’avait pas recommandé. Il faut dire que la ville, qui recèle des minibars, cafés et restos à première vue impossibles à repérer, se prête parfaitement au jeu du bouche-à-oreille. Pour confondre les voyageurs encore plus, les quartiers bien établis, tels Mitte ou Neukölln, sont souvent sous-divisés en petites enclaves organisées autour d’une rue ou d’une simple place. C’est donc pour démêler le tout que nous avons sollicité les bonnes adresses de cinq Canadiens établis à Berlin, qui nous font visiter leurs microquartiers, ou Kieze comme on les appelle là-bas.

Au Yukon, à mille lieues du bourdonnement berlinois, nous vous proposons une tout autre forme de visite guidée (p. 60). Chaque été, à trois heures et demie au nordouest de Whitehorse, James Allen (ex-chef des Premières Nations de Champagne et d’Aishihik) ouvre les portes de son camp à des visiteurs non autochtones ; aux côtés des membres de sa famille, il leur enseigne le savoir-faire traditionnel de son peuple. Notre auteure Linda Besner a ainsi pu s’initier à la vie de trappeur grâce à des leçons de perlage et de pelleterie, en plus de goûter ce qu’elle décrit comme un mémorable riz frit au spermophile. Le tout dans l’ombre du massif Saint Elias, la plus haute chaîne de montagnes côtières de la planète.

D’une poésie magnifique, le récit de son expérience dans ce camp (qui en est à sa troisième année d’opération), sans oublier les images de notre photographe Kari Medig, permettent de lancer officiellement la planification des vacances d’été. D’ici là, je me réchauffe en pensant à l’onctueux chocolat chaud à la vodka que j’ai goûté à la fin de mon repas chez Pasternak, par un froid samedi soir de mars. 

In its most familiar form, employees would use head-mounted wearable or hand-held devices to overlay computer-generated AR graphics onto a live view of the real world.

Imagine technicians working on an aircraft.

Instead of having to walk back to a computer to reference its history, they could simply look at the aircraft and see that information displayed in their line of sight. This would allow aircraft to be serviced more efficiently, which means we can place that aircraft back into service more quickly and improve our overall performance.

Yet no matter how smart computers get or how sophisticated AI becomes, there are some things machines will never learn, such as the welcoming smile or personal touch with which our employees deliver Air Canada’s award-winning service every day. 

Ainsi, ils pourraient réparer les avions plus efficacement, ce qui nous permettrait de les remettre en service plus vite et d’améliorer notre rendement global.

Pourtant, si intelligents que puissent être les ordinateurs et si évoluée que puisse être l’IA, il y a des choses qu’une machine n’apprendra jamais, comme le sourire accueillant ou la touche personnelle avec lesquels nos employés offrent au quotidien le service primé d’Air Canada. 

WHAT WAS YOUR INSPIRATION FOR THE SCENT? I visited London with my parents in 1969 when I was 12. Piccadilly Circus was jam-packed with patchouli-scented hippies, who contrasted with the fume-filled streets. I drank Earl Grey tea at Fortnum & Mason, sat on leather banquettes and saw Hair. I’ve combined all these “ingredients” to recreate that indelible first impression of London in the ’60s. 

YOU GREW UP IN SWAZIL AND. HOW DID THAT INFORM YOUR VIEW OF THE WORLD? Wedged between Marxist Mozambique and Apartheid South Africa, Swaziland is nicknamed the “Switzerland of Africa.”

It made me acutely aware of how valuable it is to have freedom of speech and live multiculturally.

WHAT DO YOU MISS ABOUT IT? The heat, the smell of gardenias, the clarity of the starry sky at night and my childhood friends, who know me inside and out. It was a very easy and safe place to grow up – as

children, we could play and explore wherever we liked, climbing trees and swimming in rivers.

We took it for granted.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS BEFORE YOU START A NEW ROLE? As I’m also a perfumer, I like to find a scent that suits who I’m playing. It’s helpful in understanding how the character sees and feels about himself. For Dr. Zander Rice in Logan, it was hospital disinfectant.

J’ai visité Londres avec mes parents quand j’avais 12 ans, en 1969. Piccadilly Circus débordait de hippies embaumant le patchouli, ce qui tranchait avec les gaz d’échappement des rues.

J’ai bu de l’earl grey chez Fortnum & Mason, j’ai pris place sur des banquettes en cuir et j’ai vu Hair. J’ai combiné tous ces « ingré­ dients » afin de recréer cette indélébile première impression du Londres des années 1960.  

After dancing with some of the most prestigious companies in North America, and twirl-wind tours through Europe, Asia and Australia, Vancouver native Kirsten Wicklund has been back on stage in her hometown with Ballet BC for the last three years.

We caught up with the contemporary ballet dancer (and So You Think You Can Dance Canada alum) during rehearsal for the company’s spring tour, which pirouettes through Quebec and Ontario next month.  Après avoir dansé dans certaines des plus prestigieuses troupes de l'A mérique du Nord et virevolté en tournée en Europe, en Asie et en Australie, la Vancouvéroise Kirsten Wicklund se produit dans sa ville natale depuis trois ans avec le Ballet BC. In an enormous pastel-blue warehouse tucked away from Route 1, bearded Canadian Craig McBay brews beers inspired by his adoptive homeland: The Bale Beach is a hoppy American pale ale named after a neighbouring beach where illicit cargo regularly washed up in the 1970s. Proceeds will go to the Children’s Healing Experience Project, which seeks to integrate art into the hospital’s new Teck Acute Care Centre, scheduled to open in November.

In Toronto, the Gardiner Museum’s G Party kicked off the winter season with its annual tree exhibition, curated by renowned artist and environmentalist David Buckland. The mix of tree installations, made from natural recycled and sustainable materials, included a tower of terracotta planting pots. LIMBING INTO JAMES ALLEN’S CHEVY SILVERADO 4 X 4 IS like clambering into the Yukon’s collective unconscious: You’re bound to sit on a dog, a Johnny Cash CD or a homemade knife with a moose-horn handle.

James, a former chief of the Champagne and Aishihik First Nations, sits behind the wheel wearing stout boots and a fringed moosehide vest. (He calls it his “business vest” because of the beaded Yukon crest on the back.) We’re driving through the St. Elias range, where the plinking toy piano of the human scale is drowned out by the sky-shattering drumbeats of the highest coastal mountains on the planet. James and I speed through clouds as we skirt the edge of 22,000 square kilometres of boreal forest, calving glaciers, icefields and, deep within, Mount Logan, the godfather of Canadian mountains. The entire region is a UNESCO World Heritage Site called Kluane National Park and Reserve, and it’s part of the largest internationally protected area on earth.

Three hours northwest of Whitehorse, we pull up on a grassy bluff overhanging a bay just outside the park boundaries. We’ve arrived at Shakat Tun, which means “summer trail” in Southern Tutchone. James has been running outdoor skills and healing camps for indigenous youth and adults in the area for decades, but Shakat Tun is a new venture. Built on his family’s active trapline, it’s a camp where up to 12 nonindigenous guests at a time can learn about the traditional way of life. A cluster of log cabins fans out from a firepit, and a red yurt provides a communal indoor space for workshops and meals. With the extended Allen family as my hosts, I’ll be

As we come across the different types of traps, I get a chance to see how these ingenious contraptions of wire, sinew, sticks and steel work. When their hides are being cleaned, James tells me, wolf is sticky and wolverine, greasy, the latter booby-trapped with scent glands that release stink bombs like a skunk’s. After taking what he needs, James positions the animal’s carcass in the woods to feed smaller creatures, and to show his respect for its life.

Likewise, when you clean a fish you’ve caught, you speak to it in your mind, thanking its spirit. Virginia tells me this later that evening while she prepares a dinner of salmon baked with onions, along with bacon-wrapped corn and bannock flavoured with garlic. As a pair of swans raises a ruckus flapping over the surface of the lake, Virginia lights the campfire. The talk starts small – gross things my dog has rolled in (rotten salmon, rotten whale) – and builds to alien encounters, secret government ops and sasquatch; no one here has seen him personally, but everyone knows someone who has. Madison and her younger sister, Azreil, who have been helping out their grandfather at the camp today, call out the names of legends like fans at a rock concert: “Tell Gottagook! Tell Goat People!”

James obliges, and the fire crackles as we hear about a woman who marries a bear, a people-eating monster who turns encore de 1,37 loup, de 13,73 aigles royaux ou de 398 pikas, le plus petit membre de la famille des lapins. Quand on les nettoie, les peaux de loup sont collantes, m’explique James, tandis que celles de carcajou sont graisseuses, en plus de receler des glandes odorantes aussi puantes qu’un jet de mouffette. Après avoir pris ce dont il a besoin, James place la carcasse de l’animal dans les bois pour nourrir les petites bêtes et montrer son respect de la vie.

June Chua

Raised in Edmonton and Calgary, June Chua fell in love with her neighbourhood after a visit in 2014, when she screened two of her documentaries in Berlin. Six months later, the filmmaker moved here – a pocket of the city that was once against the Berlin Wall, in the West. “It was a nexus for anarchists, artists and such. That spirit lives on in Mariannenkiez.

I can’t help but be inspired by my Kiez’s outsider reputation in a city that’s always been a haven for outsiders.”  Ayant grandi à Edmonton et à Calgary, June Chua s’est éprise de son quartier quand elle est venue présenter deux de ses documentaires à Berlin en 2014.

Six mois plus tard, la cinéaste s’installait dans cette partie de la ville autrefois adossée au mur de Berlin, à l’ouest. « C’était un repaire d’anarchistes et d’artistes, et cet esprit subsiste dans Mariannenkiez. Je ne peux qu’être inspirée par cette réputation de marginal, dans une ville qui a toujours été un refuge pour les marginaux. »

This shop shows how the neighbourhood is changing. It’s a luxury fashion store located on a street legendary for its left-wing demonstrations. The store is done up in refurbished industrial concrete and is full of upscale wares, like Monokel sunglasses and Helmut Lang clothes. Grab a cappuccino at Companion Coffee, right inside, and drink it in the lovely courtyard of cream-and-green bricks.  Cette adresse illustre la transformation du quartier. Housed in a renovated workshop, the “Museum of Things” is an intriguing collection of 20thcentury mass-produced objects, like TVs from the 1950s, organized in surprising ways – by colour, for example, or by usefulness. Unlike the many Cold War and art museums in Berlin, this one is about everyday objects imbued with an out-of-the-ordinary lustre.  Logé dans un atelier rénové, le « musée des choses » est une curieuse collection d’objets fabriqués en série au xxe siècle (dont des télés des années 1950), organisés de façon étonnante, comme par couleur ou selon leur utilité. This modern German restaurant is hidden inside the Bethanien Building, once a nun-operated hospital, hence the name (“Three Sisters”). It serves delicious locally sourced food for lunch, dinner and brunch. I can still taste the roast pork with red cabbage and buttermilk dumplings. “A Sunday in August” is a perfect representation of the Berlin esthetic: Candles, chandeliers and soft neon lamps light up the intricate art sketched on the walls and ceilings, as well as the second-hand couches and marble tables. It’s situated at the end of Kastanienallee, or “Casting Alley” as it’s known, thanks to the plethora of modelling agencies down the street – great for people-watching.  Cet endroit, dont le nom signifie « Par un dimanche d’août », incarne l’esthétique berlinoise : chandelles, lustres et lampes néon tamisées illuminent les œuvres complexes peintes sur les murs et au plafond, ainsi que les canapés et tables de marbre d’occasion. C’est un de ces lieux où l’on se sent aussi bien le matin avec un café latte que la nuit avec un cocktail. HOTEL ODERBERGER

A public pool opened here in 1902.

It survived shelling at the end of World War II, but closed in 1986 due to cracks in its floor. New owners restored the space this past October, reopening the swim hall with its vaulted ceilings and adding a bar, restaurant and hotel.

The hotel has comfy, reasonably priced rooms, but you don’t have to be a guest there to use the pool, sauna and spa. Afterwards, sit by the fireplace with a glass of riesling from the thorough list of German wines.  Une piscine publique a ouvert ici en 1902. Elle a survécu aux bombardements de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, mais a fermé en 1986 à cause de fissures au fond.

De nouveaux proprios ont restauré l’édifice en octobre dernier et ont rouvert la piscine au plafond voûté, en ajoutant un bar, un resto et un hôtel. Les chambres de l’hôtel sont confortables et abordables, mais pas besoin d’y loger pour utiliser la piscine, le sauna et le spa.

This market is where the neighbourhood comes to life. Grab some imported cheese, fresh bread and Moroccan coffee – there’s often a man in a red vest and fez who brews perfect little cups of it – and make a picnic on the benches at St. Matthias church, at the south end of the square. Flower lovers should look for the woman with a giant blond beehive and hornrimmed glasses. She does flawless, generous arrangements for only five euros.  C’est dans ce marché que le quartier s’anime. Order the potatoes – served in a traditional cream sauce – or the soup, which is made before your eyes in the open kitchen. The women who serve here are sweet as pie. They’ve worked at the bar for years, and they’ve seen the neighbourhood evolve from a shaggy West Berlin enclave to the worldly Kiez it is today.  Ici, chaque bière en fût mérite d’être dégustée, et la cuisine du nord de l’Allemagne est en parfait accord. A bustling confectionery shop with exquisite chocolate, Winterfeldt Schokoladen also has a café with a large variety of hot chocolates served in traditional vase-like ceramic flasks – try the one spiked with chilli. The store has been here since 2009, and kept the carved, dark wooden shelving and design of the 1892 apothecary that predated it.

There’s a trend in retail for minimalism. I hate that, so I love this place: It feels worked in. I’m a maximalist, and this is a maximalist space.  Cette confiserie animée vend des chocolats sublimes. C’est aussi un café qui sert une vaste gamme de chocolats chauds dans des tasses traditionnelles en céramique en forme de vase. (Essayez celui au piment.) Ouvert en 2009, l’endroit a gardé les étagères sculptées en bois sombre et le look de la boutique d’apothicaire qui s’y trouvait depuis 1892. La mode est au minimalisme dans le monde du commerce au détail. Ça m’horripile, et c’est pourquoi j’adore cet endroit : il a une âme. Je suis maximaliste, et c’est un lieu maximaliste.

Sabine Devins Journalist Sabine Devins and her husband set off from Vancouver for an 18-month working holiday in Berlin in 2008 and never left. Now, Devins writes dispatches about Germany for The Wall Street Journal and other publications from a charming residential pocket in Mitte.

I love the way Berliners use their public parks. On warm evenings, the big lawn around the pond is filled with friends enjoying after-work beers. If the weather’s not cooperating, Nola’s Restaurant is right there for an afternoon cake and coffee.

And there’s a playground for kids, with a homemade ice-cream shop across the street called Kauf Dich Glücklich.  J’aime l’usage que font les Berlinois de leurs parcs publics.

Les chaudes soirées d’été, la grande pelouse près de l’étang se couvre d’amis qui boivent une bière après le boulot. Si le temps est mauvais, le Nola’s est là pour un café-dessert d’après-midi. Et il y a un terrain de jeux pour les enfants, avec une crèmerie maison de l’autre côté de la rue, du nom de Kauf Dich Glücklich.

My family calls this Israeli joint Hummus und Pommes (which rhymes in German), because that’s what we eat there: hummus and fries. The adults get delicious Middle Eastern food – I love the roasted eggplant – and the kids order the fried stuff. We all share a pitcher of lemonade with mint. It’s a family-friendly restaurant without being a family restaurant.

Go for lunch or dinner, but always order the fries.  Ma famille appelle ce resto israélien Hummus und Pommes (ça rime en allemand), car c’est ce qu’on y mange : houmous et frites. Les adultes prennent de délicieux plats du Moyen-Orient (j’adore l’aubergine rôtie) et les enfants optent pour les trucs frits. On partage un pichet de limonade à la menthe. L’endroit est accueillant pour les familles sans être un resto familial. Allez-y le midi ou le soir, mais commandez toujours les frites.

This church has kept the spare, rough-walled feel from its days under the East German regime, when anti-government demonstrators gathered here to organize their protests. Now, St. ElisabethKirche is an event space that hosts installations, orchestras and choirs, who use it for practices.

Grab a bench in the breezy front courtyard and listen for free.  Cette église a gardé son air austère et brut de l’époque où les militants antigouvernementaux s’y réunissaient pour organiser des manifs sous le régime est-­allemand. Weichselstrasse is becoming one of Berlin’s best dining destinations, and this pizza parlour makes some of the best pies in town. My favourite, the Pizza Tropea, is topped with sweet red onions, arugula and pecorino – it could easily feed two! It’s fun to sit here with glasses of housemade lemonade and watch the cooks throw the dough into the restaurant’s discoball oven – a cave of fire covered in mirrored squares.  Weichselstrasse est en voie de devenir incontournable en matière de restos, et cette pizzeria est l’une des meilleures en ville. Ma pizza préférée, la Tropea, garnie d’oignon rouge doux, de roquette et de pecorino, pourrait nourrir deux personnes. Sheraz Khan “My favourite thing about Reuterkiez is that it’s packed with beautiful inconsistencies, like haute-couture shops next to burger joints,” says Khan. The Etobicoke, Ontario, native fell in love with a German and moved to the city in 2014 to be close to him. He now marries two of his passions – urban planning and visual design – creating data-driven maps with an artistic bent. “The whole city attends exhibitions in this Kiez, and yet the pace of life is very chill.”  « Ce que je préfère de Reuterkiez, ce sont toutes ses charmantes contradictions, comme des boutiques de haute couture situées à côté de restos de burger », affirme Khan, un natif d’Etobicoke, en Ontario, qui s’est épris d’un Allemand.
