Pride recommendations to the Leaders of the Pack interview with philanthropist Salah Bachir, it was an excellent edition. As a gay frequent flyer, it was great to see my community reflected in the magazine. I was aware of Air Canada’s support of LGBTQ+ issues, but it’s nice to see it expressed so publicly.

For as long as I’ve known him, my boyfriend has adored everything related to Japan. One of his lifelong dreams has been to vacation there, but it was never a priority for me. On a recent flight to Toronto, I came across Air Canada enRoute’s article “Osaka to ’Em” (May), and the city seems to have a great combination of food, culture and fun. I’m now planning on surprising him with a trip for his 40th birthday!

My soundtrack, when I travel Sleepy-time tunes by artists like Frank Ocean and Radiohead. If I had a year off, I would take my folks to Europe for six months and spend the winter snowboarding in Japan. To relax when I travel, I avoid lines, drink wine and find a body of water to swim in. When not taking photos for Air Canada enRoute, I work with T Magazine and Bon Appétit.  Je vis dans Brooklyn, à New York. Plus grand défi du reportage Ne pas trop manger et dormir au moins quatre heures par nuit. En voyage, j’écoute des chansons qui me bercent d’artistes tels Frank Ocean et Radiohead. “In today’s noise-saturated world, silence, solitude, space are the true definitions of luxury,” according to a recent report from Skift, a website that tracks travel-industry trends and developments. The nice thing is that finding those simple luxuries doesn’t have to be complicated. Two years ago, I willingly holed up in a casita, next to the La Pastora beach, near Todos Santos in Baja California, that I rented on a whim. Aside from a few words I exchanged with the affable owner of the market where I bought cold beer and fresh fish, I barely spoke to anyone during my stay. My partner likes to poke fun by saying that I became a kind of Mexican monk for a week (during which I allowed myself to binge-watch the first three seasons of The West Wing).

Thinking along the same lines, our contributing editor (and former Air Canada enRoute editor) Isa Tousignant went into exile in Minganie, in Quebec’s spectacular Basse-Côte-Nord region, to spend a few days in the lonely embrace of the St. Lawrence (see page 54). Located east of Sept-Îles, this is a pretty remote place (Route 138 unfurls, its last kilometres unpaved, at the far end of the region), and a great spot if you want to feel like you’re at the very end of the road. But that doesn’t mean you have to rough it: The Île aux Perroquets Inn, where Isa stayed, is the first luxury accommodation in the area. Located in the former lightkeepers’ house, the inn, which is partly solar-powered, features a polished nautical look and cocktails that, we hear, are strong enough to make you forget all about the relentless, gusting winds.

Then again, don’t get the idea that the Air Canada enRoute team is a bunch of hermits. In this issue, we also take you to some of the best jazz clubs in Buenos Aires, where this music has been enjoying a bit of a renaissance over the past few years (see page 70).

Though the musicians of the Argentine capital first caught the world’s attention by creating a special fusion of tango and jazz, they continue to push the boundaries, drawing new young fans who are in turn fuelling its f lair – just the way a late-night jazz set keeps evolving as the players trade solos. 

L’avantage, c’est qu’il est simple de faire l’expérience de ce nouveau genre de luxe. Il y a deux ans, je me suis volontairement isolé dans une casita adjacente à la plage La Pastora, tout près de Todos Santos, en Basse-Californie. Mis à part les quelques mots échangés avec l’affable proprio du marché qui me vendait bières et poissons bien frais, je n’ai pratiquement adressé la parole à personne de tout mon séjour. Mon copain aime d’ailleurs me railler en affirmant que je suis devenu une sorte de moine mexicain le temps d’une semaine (pendant laquelle je me suis tout de même permis de visionner en rafale les trois premières saisons d’À la Maison-Blanche).

Dans un même ordre d’idées, notre conseillère à la rédaction (et ex-rédactrice à Air Canada enRoute) Isa Tousignant s’est exilée en Minganie, dans la spectaculaire région de la Basse-Côte-Nord, au Québec, afin de vivre quelques jours rythmés par le Saint-Laurent (voir p. 54).

Situé à l’est de Sept-Îles, cet endroit reculé (les derniers kilomètres non asphaltés de la route 138 s’essoufflent de l’autre côté de ce territoire) est parfait pour se sentir au bout du bout du monde. Ce qui ne veut pas dire qu’on doive le faire à la dure : l’auberge de l’île aux Perroquets, où Isa a séjourné quelques jours, est la première villégiature de luxe dans la région. Aménagée dans l’ancienne maison des gardiens du phare, ce gîte alimenté en partie à l’énergie solaire offre une déco nautique raffinée et des cocktails qui, dit-on, sont suffisants pour faire oublier les vents qui secouent les lieux en permanence.

Mais n’allez pas croire que l’équipe d’Air Canada enRoute est une bande d’ermites. Pour le prouver, nous vous offrons une virée dans les meilleurs clubs de jazz de Buenos Aires, où cette musique connaît depuis quelques années une renaissance (voir p. 70). D’abord célèbres pour leur fusion particulière de tango et de jazz, les musiciens de la capitale argentine continuent de repousser les limites du jazz, attirant au passage un public jeune qui le revigore à son tour, telle une improvisation sur un thème qui évoluerait à chaque boucle. 

etween our new-generation aircraft and engines and the complex logistics support provided by our operations centre, Air Canada works on the cutting edge of human and technological performance. This makes us a natural partner for engineers and researchers from leading global organizations who explore the limits of the possible with the aim of extending those boundaries for the good of us all.

We collaborate with Canadian and foreign scientists on research projects, such as the development of alternative fuels. Air Canada flew its first biofuel flight in 2012 and has partnered with organizations investigating new fuel sources, including the Green Aviation Research and Development Network. In Canada, this network has brought industry and academia together to study, among other things, producing sustainable jet fuel from biomass like forestry waste products.

This spring, we participated in a project to measure emissions from five biofuel flights between Montreal and Toronto. A small jet from Canada’s National Research Council followed our aircraft using special equipment to collect samples from its contrails for analysis and comparison with regular fuel. Other projects relate to safety. This includes discussing anti-laser coatings for aircraft windscreens, sharing data for turbulence prediction models, and consulting with a university preparing an airport crisis simulation. We also assisted a behavioural psychology study assessing the relationship of employees, technology and organizations to determine how employees can be encouraged to better follow protocols to reduce injuries.

Under our safety management system, we obsessively collect performance data. Our expertise has led to partnerships with medical researchers, for example, in applying black-box technology to operating rooms to improve surgical procedures. Elsewhere, we have advised doctors developing their own safety management system for emergency rooms, and exchanged ideas with other health-care providers to address errors and reporting. Indeed, Air Canada’s experts are so well regarded that they are invited to lecture aviation and other groups on a range of topics.

Beyond a desire to share our expertise, we learn a great deal by interacting with scientists, researchers and engineers who are themselves at the forefront of their respective fields. Pooling our knowledge not only makes for a better Air Canada, but we believe it also makes for a better world. 

Nous avons aussi pris part à une étude béhavioriste sur les employés, la technologie et les organisations en vue de favoriser le respect des protocoles pour réduire les blessures.

Grâce à notre Système de gestion de la sécurité, nous recueillons des tas de données de performance.

Notre expertise a entraîné des partenariats avec des chercheurs en médecine visant à appliquer la technologie des boîtes noires aux salles d’opération. Nous avons aussi conseillé des médecins élaborant leur système de gestion de la sécurité pour salles d’urgence, et discuté avec des fournisseurs de soins de santé à propos d’erreurs et de signalements. En fait, les experts d’Air Canada sont si estimés qu’ils sont invités à se prononcer sur un éventail de sujets devant des intervenants de l’aéronautique et d’autres groupes.

Walk to the iconic Finlayson boutique in five minutes, and shop for household items featuring traditional Finnish motifs.  L’énorme lampe-cheval Moooi entre la réception en verre et le foyer à la devanture en bois donne le ton de cet hôtel à la déco éclatée. How would you recommend someone spend a day in central California?

Eat at the Grill on the Alley, the best steakhouse in San Jose. Drive through the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Go to Monterey for some Dungeness crab, then visit the Museum of Art and the Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the world’s top aquariums. They used to have great white sharks.

Where’s the most interesting pl ace you’ve been recently?

Oman. There are hills and creeks, and the country’s kept a lot of its culture and small communities alive, instead of obsessing over wealth. 

You’re a famous prankster. What’s the best prank you’ve ever pulled?

I was at the Reno airport a long time ago, and there was a phone with buttons programmed to call taxis and hotels. I unscrewed the plate and reprogrammed all the numbers to call my friend in Dallas. He was getting phone calls for months.

You’ve said that you’d take a one-way trip to Mars. What would you bring along?

My original Game Boy with Tetris, and my Kindle loaded up with books.

As a fan of superhero comics, would you rather be able to fly or become invisible?

Invisible, because of my love of pranks. But I want the greatest superpower of all: luck. That way, as Stan Lee once said at Comic Con, “If someone shoots at you, the bullet misses.”

What advancements would you like to see next in travel?

What we need is better broadband on airplanes.

If you’re on a 12-hour flight without Internet, you have to spend hours catching up on what you missed when you land.

The Stone Pony

Catch a live show at the epicentre of Asbury Park’s music scene, where Blondie, The Ramones and Cheap Trick have played. These days you might see a classic rock act or a local battle of the bands. The Pony hasn’t changed much since it opened in 1974: It’s dark, gritty and packed with music fans of all ages. Just over 25 years ago, Myles Mindham opened up shop on the seventh floor of Toronto’s Park Hyatt hotel. Today, he works and lives out of a three-storey Yorkville townhouse, creating nature-inspired bespoke jewellery like the limited-edition Magical Woodland line he released to celebrate a quartercentury of dazzling success. We caught up with him (and his standard poodles Nelson and Duq) before a business trip to Montreal.  Il y a un peu plus de 25 ans, Myles Mindham ouvrait boutique au septième étage du Park Hyatt Toronto. I fold at the beginning, to keep things neat and tidy, but by the end of a trip, I must admit I always end up stuffing in the last few items.  Au départ, je plie, afin que tout soit propre et bien rangé, mais j’avoue qu’à la fin d’un voyage je finis toujours par bourrer les derniers trucs.

How does nature inspire you?

In so many ways, from the ravens and the water in Muskoka to a book my

mother used to read to me.

It was about moon fairies bringing light to a dark forest, which inspired part of last year’s collection. I even made a crazy pair of cufflinks based on a photo of copulating rhinos – abstracted into globular reds and yellows – taken during a couple’s anniversary safari.  De bien des façons, depuis les corbeaux et le lac à Muskoka jusqu’au livre que ma mère me lisait, où des fées lunaires illuminent une forêt sombre, qui a inspiré une partie de la collection de l’an dernier. Where do you travel for work?

Mostly to Basel, New York and Tucson, Arizona, where the worlds of geology and gemology convene. Dealers bring in rough, raw gemstones, and I have found the most amazing specimens there. Imagine moonstones and meteorites on a necklace with black diamond! I’m drawn to anything from the earth that sparkles.  Surtout à Bâle, à New York et à Tucson, en Arizona, où

I was at a flea market in Paris, looking for a bronze vitrine for my shop. At the front of the market, there was a bin of discarded bits for five francs. I pull out this cufflink – and the

mechanism works perfectly.

I root around and find the other one. They let me have them even though I was a franc short. Turns out the cufflinks were 18-carat gold, and now I wear them all the time.  J’étais dans un marché aux puces à Paris, à chercher une vitrine en bronze pour ma boutique. À l’entrée, il y avait un bac de trucs au rebut à 5 F. J’ai trouvé un bouton de manchette, qui fonctionnait parfaitement. En fouillant, j’ai trouvé l’autre. J’étais à court de 1 F, mais on me les a quand même laissés. Il s’est avéré qu’ils étaient en or 18 carats, et aujourd’hui je les porte tout le temps.

Justine Wong moved to Tokyo in 2016, after falling in love with its flashy city life on a trip a year earlier. While the Toronto native (whose watercolour illustrations have appeared in The Walrus and Lucky Peach) recently returned home, she spent a year eating her way through the city and forming a community with other expat illustrators. “My favourite thing about Tokyo is how vast it is. It’s filled with possibilities.”  Justine Wong s’est installée à Tokyo en 2016, la clinquante ville l’ayant séduite un an plus tôt lors d’un voyage. Même si la Torontoise (dont les illustrations à l’aquarelle ont paru dans The Walrus et Lucky Peach) est récemment rentrée au bercail, elle a passé une année à explorer les restos de la ville et à nouer des liens avec d’autres illustrateurs de l’étranger. « Ce que je préfère de Tokyo, c’est son immensité. Jomon is what you’d expect of a classic izakaya – steamy and intimate. Since all the dishes are shareable, it’s best to go with friends so you can try a bit of everything. I recommend the homemade sesame tofu and the deep-fried croquette, which is filled with a runny egg yolk.  Le Jomon est ce qu’on attend d’un izakaya classique (embué et intime). Kaisu

The owners of this hostel are really into surfing, so even though the interiors have a Japanese esthetic with dark wood and white walls, there are surfboards throughout. They wanted it to be a space for travellers and their friends to gather, which is why they host art exhibits almost every month. It’s also a nice place to grab a midday beer or coffee.  Les proprios de cette auberge de jeunesse adorent le surf, alors malgré l’esthétique japonaise de la déco (bois sombres et murs blancs), il y a des planches de surf partout. This tea house serves classic Japanese desserts, like anmitsu, which is fruit on a bed of jelly served with sweet syrup. When you enter, you remove your shoes and shuffle on tatami mats to a low table. On a rainy afternoon, I like to sit by the windows that overlook the lush garden, when a hot matcha is paired with the sound of the rain.  Ce salon de thé sert des desserts japonais classiques tels que l’anmitsu, un fruit sur un lit de gelée nappé de sirop sucré. En entrant, on doit se déchausser et marcher sur des tatamis jusqu’à une table basse. he scent inside the Mendel Art Gallery’s basement is a cocktail of paints, varnishes, metals and woods – intoxicating, though not unpleasant – but I’m only whiffing a fraction of Saskatoon’s largest public art vaults.

Most of the gallery’s 7,500 works are encased in sedan-size wood coffins, insulated, cushioned, buckled, stacked and ready for their next destinations. A radiant Alex Janvier painting is headed for Ottawa’s National Gallery.

A Lawren Harris is Toronto-bound. But the vast majority will take a quick jaunt around the bend of the South Saskatchewan River to their palatial new home, the Remai Modern, the $85-million art museum that is set to become Canada’s MoMA when it opens in October.

At least that’s the audacious hope of Gregory Burke, its founding director, who’s invited me to visit what might already be Saskatoon’s most iconic building. (The Bruce Kuwabara design won a 2011 Award of Excellence from

I walk there from the now-closed Mendel in 15 minutes to meet Burke, whose shirt’s backwards text would read “The End of the World” had I a mirror on hand. He leads me through the glassy cantilevered body that hugs the Persephone Theatre next door. Muffled drilling and screeching tape echo off the 40-foot-high white-oak ceiling, and orange-vested workers haul 12-footlong baseboards on each shoulder as they add final touches. The result will be a clever tribute to the Prairies: Flat and long, boxy like old grain elevators stacked on their sides, with glass walls creating an openness that’s more than sensory. A generous portion of the Remai is free space, including a communal atrium designed around a huge fireplace.

We ascend a tall staircase etched with the word “Welcome” in the six different languages of Saskatchewan’s First Nations. Burke, a soft-spoken Kiwi, hopes the Remai (pronounced RAY-mee) will be one of the world’s leading destinations for indigenous art, putting it on the continuum of contemporary international art instead of ghettoizing it in galleries. He’s hush about the opening exhibitions but promises they will host the Canadian premiere of Cherokee artist Jimmie Durham’s retrospective alongside what’s sure to be a provocative show by mixed-media master Thomas Hirschhorn. (His gory meditations on censorship, commissioned for the Remai’s website, have already shocked many.) The only Remai constant will be a showcase of 405 Picasso linocut prints, the world’s largest collection, donated by the gallery’s philanthropist namesake Ellen Remai.

While shows at the Mendel were often workarounds due to its inadequate size, elevators and internal climate, the Remai is a state-of-the-art temperature-controlled museum with a plump budget that’s capable of showing just about anything from the last one hundred years. Many see Saskatoon

Nous gravissons un long escalier où est gravé le mot « Bienvenue » dans les six langues des Premières Nations en Saskatchewan. Selon M. Burke, un NéoZélandais à la voix douce, le Remai (prononcez Rémi) souhaite être une destination mondiale de premier plan en matière d’art autochtone, qu’il veut inscrire dans le continuum de l’art contemporain international au lieu de le confiner dans les galeries. M. Burke garde le secret sur les expos inaugurales, mais annonce la première canadienne d’une rétrospective de l’artiste cherokee Jimmie Durham ainsi qu’une présentation controversée du maître plasticien Thomas Hirschhorn.

It’s Marie Anne MacRae’s job to help spread the word about the experiences on offer through the Travel Corporation’s 30-odd vacation brands (think Contiki, Trafalgar and Luxury Gold). To do so, she finds ambassadors, from Instagrammers to environmentalists, and accompanies them on trips to create content in destinations like Florence and Udaipur, India. Based in Toronto, MacRae lived in Hong Kong for two years and now spends more than 90 days a year on the move, ­always eager to discover the next spot on her itinerary.  Marie Anne MacRae a pour tâche de faire c­ onnaître la richesse des expériences proposées par The Travel Corporation, qui regroupe plus de 30 voyagistes, tels Contiki, Trafalgar et Luxury Gold. Since launching the first Le Germain Hotel in 1988 in Quebec City, Christiane Germain has opened another five across the country as well as a line of budgetfriendly, design-savvy accommodations known as Alt. Presented by Decarie Motors Inc. and Aston Martin, the champagne-fuelled celebration fortified its first-class guests with gourmet nibbles and sounds by DJ YO-C – from zero to 60, a dance party erupted!  À la soirée Grand Prix du RitzCarlton Montréal, présentation des Moteurs Décarie et d’Aston Martin, on avait la pédale au plancher. T

he end of the road is much quainter than I’d imagined. Kegaska, some 1,311 kilometres northeast of Montreal (as the crow drives), is as far as Route 138 goes, and the last 40 kilometres aren’t even paved, at that.

I stop the car and jump out at a gold-sand bay that’s at the heart of this fishing community of 110. The road might stop, but that seascape just keeps going and going. As I step out of my shoes and onto the beach, the hot sand burns my toes. A few more steps and the ice-cool waves soothe them instantly. This is a place of extremes.

Route 138 hugs the north shore of the St. Lawrence River between Montreal and the spot where I stand. Renowned for its whale-watching (13 species commingle in these waters) bountiful fresh seafood and rough winters, northern Quebec’s Minganie region is rugged, no-nonsense and nonchalantly spectacular. It’s also coastal, in a beachside-ice-cream-shacks-anddocks-lined-with-baseball-capped-fishermen kind of way. And in the summer season, it makes for a seaside vacation defined by simplicity – there is, after all, only one road to take.

e bout de la route est bien plus pittoresque que je le croyais. Kegaska, à quelque 1311 km de voiture au nord-est de Montréal, est l’extrémité de la 138, et les 40 derniers kilomètres ne sont même pas asphaltés. J’éteins le moteur et sors d’un bond face à la baie au sable doré située au cœur de ce village de pêcheurs de 110 habitants. La route prend fin, mais le paysage marin continue de s’étendre à perte de vue. Quand j’enlève mes chaussures pour fouler la plage, le sable chaud me brûle les orteils. Encore quelques pas et les vagues glaciales les apaisent illico. Je suis dans un lieu d’extrêmes.

La route 138 longe la rive nord du Saint-Laurent entre Montréal et là où je me trouve. Réputée pour l’observation des baleines (13 espèces fréquentent ces eaux), son abondance de poissons et fruits de mer frais et ses durs hivers, la Minganie est une région sauvage, terre à terre et sobrement spectaculaire de la Côte-Nord québécoise. C’est aussi une région côtière, dans le genre petits bars laitiers sur la plage et pêcheurs à casquette de baseball alignés sur les quais. En été, elle permet des vacances à la mer synonymes de simplicité ; après tout, il n’y a qu’une seule route.

Speaking of extremes… The next day, gripping the sheer rock face above the roiling Magpie River with toes and fingers, I rush to keep up with my athletic guides, Audrey Beauchemin, Mathieu Bourdon and Sylvain Roy from Association Eaux-Vives Minganie, a group of amateur outdoor enthusiasts out of Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan. Indecipherable exclamations from up ahead spur me to speed up, but honestly, I’m not sure my sneakers will hold. As I gingerly turn the rocky corner, I see what the fuss is about: The group has reached the mouth of the waterfall, which whooshes down into a crystal-clear pool 10 metres below. I catch my breath, and just as I’m thinking how refreshing the water looks, I hear a splash. Sylvain is in, his wetsuit discarded on the rocks.

All dried off, Sylvain shows us how to forage for some of Quebec’s most recherché ingredients. The woods that surround us are wild territory, with plenty of edibles to munch on if you happen to lose your pack down the river, including snowberries.

The wondrously minty little white fruit is a special commodity clamoured for by star chefs at the other end of Route 138, including Jérôme Ferrer and Normand Laprise. This natural buffet is vegetarianism at its most convenient.

À propos d’extrêmes… Le lendemain, doigts et orteils accrochés à la paroi rocheuse dominant la torrentueuse rivière Magpie, je me dépêche de suivre mes guides athlétiques, Audrey Beauchemin, Mathieu Bourdon et Sylvain Roy de l’Association Eaux-Vives Minganie, un groupe de mordus de plein air basé à Longue-Pointe-de-Mingan. Devant, des cris indistincts m’incitent à accélérer, mais franchement je doute que mes souliers tiennent le coup. Tournant prudemment le coin rocheux, je saisis enfin la cause de tout cet émoi : le groupe a atteint le sommet d’une chute, qui se jette dans un bassin cristallin 10 m plus bas. Je reprends mon souffle ; juste comme je songe que la baignade doit rafraîchir, j’entends un plouf. Sylvain est à l’eau, sa combinaison sur les rochers.

Une fois sec, il nous apprend à glaner des ingrédients parmi les plus recherchés du Québec. Les bois environnants sont sauvages et abondent en plantes comestibles à grignoter, dont la symphorine, si jamais on perd son sac à dos dans la rivière. Les petits fruits blancs au merveilleux goût de menthe de cet arbuste sont une denrée rare réclamée par des chefs vedettes à l’autre bout de la 138, tels Jérôme Ferrer et Normand Laprise. Véritable buffet naturel, c’est du végétarisme à son plus pratique.

The Magpie River is ripe for an adventuretourism boom. It’s listed second on National Geographic’s top 10 adventure-sports rivers worldwide, and one kayak trip down its class III and IV rapids confirms a thrilling lack of flatwater. Yet the handful of crews that organize weeklong whitewater trips on the river often have it to themselves.

La rivière Magpie est mûre pour un boom de tourisme d’aventure. Le National Geographic la classe deuxième à son palmarès des meilleures rivières à rafting au monde, et une descente en kayak de ses rapides de classe 3 et 4 confirme une grisante absence d’eau calme. Mais les quelques groupes qui y organisent des excursions d’une semaine l’ont souvent à eux seuls.

The sea spray and mist in the air have left a film on my glasses, but I soak up the vista through the haze: The sky is a dramatic zigzag of grey and blue.

“Minke whale!” exclaims Danka, and we rush to the left side of the vessel to spot our passing friend, mere feet away. “Seals!” It’s back to starboard, to see a whole herd of them playing dodge ’em with the boat. And then, as we near the island: “Puffins!”

Cute little puffy puffins – one, two, six, twelve. The so-called perroquets (parrots) have gathered here to lay their eggs for countless generations.

Puis, à l’approche de l’île : « Macareux ! » De petits macareux mimi et duveteux ; un, deux, six, douze. Ces perroquets de mer pondent ici depuis d’innombrables générations.

Le bateau accoste, et nous abordons dans l’île.

Parks Canada rents out their Otentik accommodations and campsites on most of the islands in Minganie, including Quarry Island. Its world-famous monoliths – moss-topped, three-metre-tall rock formations – have been perfecting their eroded edges for millennia.

the island. Smooth pebble beach on one side and 10-metre rock face on the other, it’s small enough to see from end to end, yet big enough to make you feel alone in the world. The clouds part and the sun glints off the freshly painted white stucco of the lighthouse, a beacon in the area since the days when leading ships to safety was an around-the-clock, allweather job held by a particular kind of madman. In 2015, however, the Île aux Perroquets Inn became the region’s first luxury getaway when the lighthouse keeper’s house and his assistant’s were retrofitted into gîtes (guest cottages) that paint eco-tourism with a beachy designer brush: blond-wood floors, brightly painted paddles by Montreal’s Ropes and Wood, nouveau-macramé wall hangings and the comfiest bed in the archipelago. Glamping is fun, but this is a treat.

Danka calls us down for the first of what would be a series of fantastic meals at the inn. I breathe in the smell of fresh-chopped wild leeks, stars of a giant salad. The bowlful of multicoloured bounty is sourced from La Coop Grenier Boréal, a farm co-op launched a few years ago. They grow more than you would think possible in this taiga: heritage tomatoes of every hue, buttery lettuce, escarole, cabbages, cucumbers and a rainbow of edible flowers.

A few days later, after a cushy yacht ride back to the mainland, I visit this garden of eatin’ (the farm sits just off the 138). I pick from a chuckleberry tree and pop the burgundy fruits into my pink-stained mouth – I might have already gotten into the strawberry patch. In warmer climes, this tree would be twice the

Le glamping, c’est bien beau, mais ici on fait dans la volupté.

Danka nous appelle pour le premier d’une suite de mémorables repas à l’auberge. Je hume l’ail des bois fraîchement haché, vedette d’une énorme salade, dont les trésors multicolores proviennent de la coop agricole Le Grenier boréal, lancée il y a quelques années. On y cultive plus que ce qu’il semble possible dans cette taïga : tomates anciennes de toutes les teintes, laitue grasse, scarole, choux, concombres ainsi qu’un arc-en-ciel de fleurs comestibles.

Quelques jours plus tard (après un retour peinard en yacht sur le continent), je visite ce jardin de délices : la ferme est tout près de la 138. J’engouffre dans ma bouche teintée de rose (serais-je déjà passée par la fraisière ?) les petits fruits bordeaux d’un amélanchier du Canada. Sous des climats plus chauds, celui-ci serait deux fois

size at its age – but its fruit is a flavour powerhouse. And the stubby blueberry bushes seem to pump out twice as many berries as the bigger ones I’m used to. It’s as if the northern wind and short growing season inspire the sap to concentrate all its efforts on making the sweetest goodies possible.

One of the smallest and weirdest endemic plants here is the cloudberry, or chicoutai, a fruit cluster that looks like a raspberry on steroids and turns (counter-intuitively) from bright red to orange when it’s ripe. It grows wild in marshlands only, on plants barely 10 centimetres high – picking it is back-breaking work for sure, which explains its price. This foraged gold is a local obsession, and no wonder: It’s an addictive sweet-and-sour mouthful.

Restaurants all along the coast pack it into pies, compotes and salsas, but my favourite interpretation comes as I make my way back to Montreal. In Sept-Îles, just west of Minganie, it punctuates a local kir: a flute of champagne with a touch of cloudberry purée and a single, unlikely berry floating amid the bubbles. L’une des plus petites et étranges plantes endémiques ici est la chicoutai, un fruit à multiples drupes semblable à une framboise dopée qui passe (contrairement à la logique) du rouge vif à l’orange quand il est mûr. Elle pousse uniquement dans les marécages, sur des plants d’à peine 10 cm ; sa cueillette est assurément éreintante, ce qui explique son prix. Cet or sauvage est une obsession locale, et ce n’est pas étonnant : ce plaisir au goût aigre-doux est une vraie drogue. Sur la côte, les restos en font des tartes, des compotes et des salsas, mais l’usage que je préfère m’apparaît à mon retour vers Montréal. À Sept-Îles, juste à l’ouest de la Minganie, ce fruit égaie un kir local : une flûte de champagne avec une touche de purée de chicoutai, garnie d’une seule baie inattendue qui flotte parmi les bulles. he songs are mysterious to me — a sextet of men dressed all in black sound like they’re playing obscure Gershwin tunes or maybe lesser known Cole Porter? But there’s no brass section; I’m thrown by its absence. Surrounded by portraits of jazz greats on high brick walls, an intense dude on a bandoneón, the accordion-like instrument that drives tango, nearly bleeds his squeezebox dry, and an elegant violinist plucks and bows his instrument like a broken heart. The insistent melodies escalate in tempo and passion. The band is called Vibraphonissimo and it’s playing a moody, modern take on songs that tango legend Astor Piazzolla performed with American jazz great Gary Burton 30 years ago. The two genres flirt as entertainingly as the young couples around me, canoodling at tiny tables, drinking craft beer and hooting and clapping when the players trade scorching solos.

At midnight, I spill out of Cafe Vinilo, onto the streets of Palermo, a park- and boutique-dotted northeast neighbourhood that’s home to a handful of jazz clubs and speakeasies.

Metal garage-style doors are rolled up, revealing Porteñas and Porteños, as residents here are called, who are just sitting down to dinner – late, even by Argentina’s standards – or sipping fernet and cola in shoebox bars. I head to nearby Virasoro, another venue where the trasnoche (late-night) shows are just warming up.

Jazz hasn’t topped charts in its American homeland for over 50 years, but in Buenos Aires audiences are young and

Tango et jazz flirtent de façon aussi plaisante que les jeunes couples qui se bécotent et boivent des bières artisanales aux minuscules tables autour de moi, criant et applaudissant à chaque échange de solos enflammés. À minuit, je sors du Cafe Vinilo dans les rues de Palermo, quartier du nord-est émaillé de boutiques et de parcs qui abrite quelques clubs de jazz et bars secrets. Les rideaux métalliques levés laissent voir des Buenos-Airiens en train de s’attabler pour souper (tard, même d’après les normes argentines) ou de siroter des Fernet-Cola dans des bars de poche. Je me rends au Virasoro, tout près, où les spectacles trasnoche (nocturnes) débutent à peine.

Le jazz ne domine plus les palmarès dans sa patrie américaine depuis plus de 50 ans, mais à Buenos Aires le public est jeune et les prix d’entrée modiques ; tant de groupes jouent dans une semaine typique que je vois neuf concerts pendant ma visite de six

cover charges modest; there are so many bands playing in a typical week that I see nine shows during my six-day visit. But this accessible jazz scene is no retro La La Land-style tribute.

The city has become an incubator for innovative musicians giving the art form new relevance thanks, in part, to the Argentinian capital’s thriving jazz festival, which runs every November, and to a respected career-track jazz program at the Manuel de Falla Conservatory that’s produced some of the country’s brightest stars. There’s an old Miles Davis line, “Don’t call it jazz: that’s a made-up word. It’s social music.”

Those words ring true in Buenos Aires today.

“No other popular music is as close to jazz as tango, and that’s one reason why Argentinian musicians play so well,” says Adrián Iaies, the artistic director of the Festival Internacional Buenos Aires Jazz who has earned three Latin Grammy nominations for his soul- and tango-inflected sound, which he’s toured across the globe. We’re at the Usina del Arte, a refurbished power plant turned cultural hub in the port-side barrio of La Boca, where tourists flock to see colourfully painted wooden houses and street-busking tango dancers. As we walk through the Usina’s 280-seat theatre, Iaies, his resonant voice silky in its acoustic cocoon, tells me that Buenos Aires has been a great place for jazz for the last 80 years, with more clubs than European heavy hitters like Paris, Madrid or Barcelona. Back in jazz’s heyday, visiting American artists and big-band leaders, including Josephine Baker and Dizzy Gillespie, were so impressed by Argentina’s ensembles they recruited talent for

their own bands. But the festival, which began in 2008, has attracted new audiences and players.

“There are musicians of 19 or 20 years old playing very well, and when you have young players, you have a young audience” who, Iaies adds, have grown up listening to tango and jazz, so “they experience the romance and melancholy in both.” I think back to Vibraphonissimo’s wailing; it’s darker, and more sultry than the brassy swagger of American jazz. But Iaies is quick to point out that the Buenos Aires sound is too varied, and its artists too multicultural, to be reduced to a simple tango-jazz mashup.

They’re developing their own voices.

Take the 16 fresh-faced, skinny-suited members of the big band Jazz Believers Orchestra. At Bebop, a crimson-walled basement club, I watch them reinvent the smoky old ballad Li’l Darlin’.

I know the tender lyrics lurking behind this instrumental version — “My sweet li’l darlin’ gives me her love” — but re-think the song as they play: the plaintive brass section sounds more like unrequited love than romance.

By day, that melancholy trumpet gives way to the roar of traffic on 9 de Julio Avenue. At 16 lanes, including a bus corridor, it’s the widest avenue in the world, cutting a chaotic north-south route through the sprawling downtown. I stroll along one of its shaded pedestrian paths passed the ornate, Parisian-style facades of Retiro toward the beautifully restored Teatro Colón,

Prenez les 16 membres au teint frais et aux complets ajustés du big band Jazz Believers Orquesta. Au Bebop, une cave aux murs pourpres, je les écoute réinventer la vieille ballade langoureuse Li’l Darlin’. Je connais les tendres paroles derrière la version instrumentale (« My sweet li’l darlin’ gives me her love »), mais l’approche du groupe me fait repenser la chanson : les cuivres plaintifs évoquent ici une histoire d’amour non partagé.

De jour, les tristes trompettes font place au grondement de la circulation sur Avenida 9 de Julio. À 16 voies, dont une réservée aux bus, c’est la plus large avenue au monde, chaotique tranchée nord-sud dans le tentaculaire centre-ville. Sur une de ses voies piétonnes ombragées, je dépasse les façades ouvragées à la parisienne de Retiro en route pour le Teatro Colón, un opéra de marbre centenaire superbement restauré qui rappelle le surnom de Buenos Aires à la Belle Époque : le Paris du Sud. J’espère assister à la

a century-old marbled opera house that brings to mind Buenos Aires’ belle époque nickname, “Paris of the South.” I’m hoping to attend an opening night of Giulio Cesare but all 2,487 tickets are sold out — even for the affordable standing-room balconies that would be a feat of endurance given the four-hour-plus running time. Clearly, this is a culture that reveres live music.

To make up for it, I pop over to the kitschy old Galería Apolo shopping arcade, which houses Minton’s, a vinyl shop devoted to jazz (it’s named after a famous Harlem venue). Inside, I find a charming hoarders’ lair with barely enough room to navigate around bins of records, shelves teeming with Japanese CD box sets and what appears to be a makeshift bar, complete with redwine-stained glasses, perched precariously on one corner. I find an obscure edition of Coltrane’s last live performance, while proprietor Guillermo Hernández spins vintage records. For the last 25 years, the miniscule space has been an unofficial clubhouse where collectors and musicians talk shop, promote their shows and sip Malbec (Hernández even launched his own line of the robust red).

On one afternoon, I head to Colegiales, a low-key, leafy working-class area sandwiched between comparatively buzzy Palermo and Belgrano. I’m there to meet Yamile Burich, one of Buenos Aires’ busiest sax players and the leader of an all-female quintet. The bohemian brunette welcomes me with doublecheek kisses to her quaint vintage PH, a local apartment style with a courtyard and rooftop patio. In the ’90s, she explains, there wasn’t much opportunity for young musicians here, so she

Pour compenser, je passe à la Galería Apolo, vieille galerie marchande kitsch où se trouve la boutique de vinyles jazz Minton’s (du nom de la célèbre salle de Harlem). C’est un charmant repaire d’accumulateurs compulsifs avec à peine assez d’espace pour circuler entre les bacs de disques, les étagères regorgeant de coffrets de CD japonais et ce qui semble être un bar de fortune, avec verres tachés de vin rouge, en équilibre précaire dans un coin. Je déniche une édition obscure du dernier live de Coltrane tandis que le proprio Guillermo Hernández fait jouer des disques vintage. Depuis 25 ans, ce minuscule local sert de club informel où collectionneurs et musiciens parlent boutique, font leur promotion et sirotent du malbec (Hernández a même lancé sa propre marque de ce rouge corsé).

Un après-midi, je me rends dans Colegiales, un quartier ouvrier discret et vert coincé entre Palermo et Belgrano, qui sont très animés en comparaison. Je viens y rejoindre Yamile Burich, saxophoniste parmi les plus en demande de Buenos Aires, qui dirige un quintette entièrement féminin. La brune bohème me fait la bise sur les deux joues et m’accueille dans son condo (PH, dans le parler local) pittoresque et vieillot, avec cour et terrasse sur le toit. Dans les années 1990, dit-elle, les débouchés étaient rares pour les jeunes musiciens d’ici, et elle a donc quitté Salta, sa ville natale du nord-ouest de l’Argentine, pour étudier et jouer à Londres, à New York et à La Nouvelle-Orléans.

left Salta, her hometown in northwest Argentina, to study and play in London, New York and New Orleans. She moved back a decade ago, sensing growing potential: “There was some new energy, creative energy,” she says. The local appetite for jazz is now so great it’s possible for Burich to live in Buenos Aires on “music money”— she does two or three gigs a week for crowds that sometimes queue down the block.

Her band plays original music — a muscular, swing- and bluestinged sound that defies the stereotype of women as genteel singers or side players. When we meet, they’re fresh off playing a Women in Jazz series. “For a long time, jazz was a man’s game and the audience here was mostly male,” she says. And as audiences have grown and become more diverse, the quality of the music has done the same: “There are lots of musicians around now, which makes things more competitive. The level has gone up, which is fantastic.”

That’s certainly true at Thelonious, Buenos Aires’ most renowned club, tucked behind a barely marked door in Palermo.

I follow the faint tinkle of piano up a dark staircase that opens into a narrow room packed with elegantly rumpled Porteños. Lit by a chandelier, a singer in a flowered dress sighs in a rich, low voice: “Blow ill wind, blow away... you’re blowing me no good.”

Hair in a low bun, secured by a bloom, her profile ­matches the famous nine-story portrait of Eva Peron gracing an office building on 9 de Julio. The drummer works the brushes like whispers.

The trumpet player peals a clarion lick. The set is over in a heartbeat, and I step back out onto the street in search of my next show in the city’s never-ending jam.  Write to us: letters@aircanadaenroute.com

Percevant une hausse des perspectives, elle est revenue il y a une dizaine d’années : « Il y avait une énergie nouvelle et créatrice. » L’appétit local de jazz est aujourd’hui tellement dévorant que Mme Burich peut vivre à Buenos Aires de ses cachets : elle donne deux ou trois concerts par semaine pour des foules qui font parfois la queue autour du pâté de maisons.

Son groupe joue de la musique originale : un son puissant, teinté de swing et de blues, qui fait mentir le cliché de la femme raffinée, qu’elle soit chanteuse ou instrumentiste. Sa formation vient de se produire dans une série Women in Jazz. « Le jazz a longtemps été une affaire d’hommes et le public ici était surtout masculin », raconte Mme Burich. Mais à mesure que le public s’est développé et diversifié, la musique a fait de même : « Il y a présentement beaucoup de musiciens actifs, ce qui alimente la compétition. Le niveau a augmenté, et c’est formidable. » C’est assurément le cas au Thelonious, la plus célèbre boîte de Buenos Aires, qui se cache derrière une porte quasi anonyme dans Palermo. Le faible son d’un piano me mène en haut d’un escalier sombre jusqu’à une salle étroite bondée de Buenos-Airiens au style élégamment négligé. Éclairée par un lustre, une chanteuse en robe fleurie se lamente d’une voix riche et grave : « Blow, ill wind, blow away… you’re blowin’ me no good. » Avec son chignon bas retenu par une fleur, elle offre le même profil que le célèbre portrait de neuf étages d’Eva Perón qui orne un immeuble de bureaux d’Avenida 9 de Julio. Le batteur joue des balais dans un souffle. Le trompettiste claironne un chorus.
