Guillaume Sasseville raises a glass to Montreal history with his antique green water tumblers. After being awarded the Phyllis Lambert Design Montréal Grant in 2011, the product designer pored over the archives of the country’s world-renowned crystal and glass factories to find inspiration for his new project. Blown away by the old-timey patterns and finishes, he spent three years perfecting his glass. The elegant eight-ouncer appears to float on the table thanks to its ghostly green matte surface, and is the first design in the verre commun collection, which will eventually include glasses for grappa, beer, wine and more. Bottoms up!

Guillaume Sasseville trinque à l’histoire de Montréal avec ses verres à paraison verte de style ancien.

Ayant reçu la Bourse Phyllis-Lambert Design Montréal en 2011, le concepteur de produits a étudié de près les archives des cristalleries et verreries les plus renommées au pays afin de trouver l’inspiration pour son nouveau projet. Tombé sous le charme des motifs et finis de jadis, il a passé trois ans à peaufiner son verre.

L’élégant objet de 227 ml semble flotter au-dessus de la table avec sa surface fantomatique verte et est le premier de la collection verre commun, qui s’enrichira de verres à grappa, à bière, à vin, etc. Santé !

RONALDO Grand Electric is a small spot in Parkdale that serves tacos along with over 50 types of bourbon. (The place was named one of Canada’s Best New Restaurants by Air Canada’s enRoute magazine in 2012.)

They have bourbon from all over the States: Kentucky, Tennessee and Georgia. And, they’ve even carried some hard-to-find bottles, like Pappy Van Winkle.  Le Grand Electric (un des Meilleurs nouveaux restos canadiens du magazine enRoute d’Air Canada en 2012) est un petit bar dans Parkdale à la cinquantaine de bourbons pour accompagner ses tacos. Les crus proviennent de partout aux États-Unis : du Kentucky, du Tennessee et de Géorgie. Et il y a même eu quelques bouteilles rares à la carte, comme une Pappy Van Winkle.

The hotel’s Champagne Wall is the newest fixture to adorn its lobby lounge. The floor-to-ceiling vault is inspired by 1930s Shanghai: black panelling, gold Chinese script and added flair courtesy of a vertiginous ladder that leads to a red bucket, which servers use to retrieve top-shelf bottles. Awardwinning sommelier Mark Moffatt has landed some rare finds, like a 1982 Dom Pérignon Oenothèque Rosé and the Nicolas Feuillatte Palmes d’Or 1999, while also making room for grower champagnes such as an André Clouet Silver Brut NV. To top off the experience, chef

Damon Campbell of Bosk created a snack menu to complement the 60-plus labels on hand. Order by the bottle or have Moffatt match by-the-glass selections with organically farmed caviar from British Columbia or pâté de campagne, served with pickles and country bread. Not surprisingly, the study also revealed that the majority of affluent Canadians choose to work with a financial advisor. Why? V HAZELTON I own a lot of shoes. Some of my favourites are from here, like Santoni and Branchini, which are made of beautiful Italian leather. I don’t wear suits often, and if I do, I’ll keep the colours simple. But the shoes always have to be spectacular.  J’ai beaucoup de chaussures.

GEORGES RECH I’m a mama’s boy – I grew up with three sisters. On Saturdays, I’ll often go for brunch with my mom, then take her shopping here. It’s a store that has a very French feel, and they have fantastic people working there. It’s an experience.  Je suis un fils à sa maman, j’ai grandi avec trois sœurs. Le samedi, je vais souvent bruncher avec ma mère, puis je l’amène magasiner ici.

OPERA ATELIER Opera Atelier is one of my favourite cultural outings in Toronto. They perform at the Elgin Theatre twice a year, and they recently put on Persée in the Château de Versailles outside of Paris, which I got to see this past spring – I even sat in the king and queen’s box!  L’Opera Atelier est ma sortie culturelle préférée à Toronto. L’Elgin Theatre en présente deux fois par an, et on a récemment monté Persée au château de Versailles, près de Paris, que j’ai pu voir ce printemps ; j’étais même assis dans la loge royale !

HARBOUR SIXTY STEAKHOUSE I like the steak and seafood at this restaurant. One of the owners, Ted Nikolaou, started out as a shoeshine boy and worked his way up in the city – he owned JJ Muggs Grille and Bar. When my wife passed away, he gave me a Greek cross and chain and that was really cool.  J’aime le steak, le poisson et les fruits de mer de ce resto. Ted Nikolaou, l’un des proprios, a débuté comme cireur de chaussures puis a fait son chemin ; il a déjà été proprio du JJ Muggs Grille and Bar. Quand ma femme est morte, il m’a donné un pendentif avec une croix grecque, j’ai apprécié.

CHEZ MÉNICK, LE BARBIER DES SPORTIFS I’m superstitious, so when I have an event, I have to go see Ménick, the barber, in the morning. Since I don’t have any hair, I get a shave. The place is decorated with pictures of customers, from René Angélil to 1970s hockey legends, and the floor is painted like a hockey rink.  Je suis superstitieux, et j’ai besoin de passer chez Ménick le matin précédent tout événement mondain.

Comme je suis chauve, je me fais raser. Le salon est tapissé de photos de clients, de René Angélil aux légendes du hockey des années 1970, et le sol est peint à la façon d’une patinoire.

CINÉMA BEAUBIEN I go to the movies pretty often; on a rainy day, I’ll go at 10 a.m. This is one of the last independent movie theatres in town, and I like that it has stayed small and community driven. There are only five screening rooms, and there is a strong emphasis on Quebec cinema.  Je vais assez souvent au cinéma ; un jour de pluie, j’y suis dès 10 h. Le Beaubien est l’un des derniers cinémas indépendants en ville, et j’aime qu’il soit resté modeste et ancré dans la communauté. Snag a spot for lunch to sample the perfectly crisped pies; toppings change monthly, but our favourite remains the white pizza with escarole, olives, capers and mozzarella di bufala. And to top it all off, frozen custard is on the menu for dessert.  Dans la Petite Italie, Stefano Faita, de l’Impasto, a ouvert de l’autre côté de la rue un second resto, où la pizza est reine. Les garnitures de ces merveilles croustillantes à point changent chaque mois, mais nous avons un faible pour la pizza sauce blanche à la scarole, aux câpres, aux olives et à la mozzarella de bufflonne. Pour couronner le tout, il y a de la costarde glacée au dessert.
