OLD SPAGHETTI FACTORY It’s a landmark for both Toronto and our family. It used to be a blacksmith shop, and the warehouse was converted in the 1970s. Sarah, my wife, was a bartender here, fresh out of university. Let me tell you, she makes some killer Shirley Temples!  C’est une institution à Toronto et un repaire familial. MORTON’S STEAKHOUSE It’s one of my favourite boys’-night-out spots; breaking bread with friends at Morton’s is like going back to a time where movies were in black and white. And the prime rib – washed down with a little Honey Jack Daniels on ice – is out of this world.  C’est l’un de mes endroits préférés pour sortir entre gars. Casser la croûte avec des amis au Morton’s, c’est un peu comme revenir à l’époque des films en noir et blanc. Et la côte de bœuf, arrosée d’un Jack Daniel’s au miel avec glaçons, est divine.

THE DISTILLERY HISTORIC DISTRICT The cobblestone streets, old brick buildings and abundance of restaurants – Archeo is my favourite – bars, galleries, theatres and shops make for great exploring.

We’ve gone to a few network launch events and art displays here too and always enjoyed ourselves.  Les rues pavées, les vieux édifices en brique, les nombreux restos (j’ai un faible pour Archeo), bars, galeries, théâtres et boutiques font du quartier un lieu de découvertes. Nous avons assisté dans le coin à plusieurs lancements de la chaîne et à des expos et avons toujours pris du bon temps.

ONTARIO SCIENCE CENTRE There’s so much to learn here from the seemingly unlimited number of interactive displays. I have memories of running from exhibit to exhibit with my friends; now we bring our own kids. You can have a birthday party, attend day camps, watch an IMAX film or sign up to build a tram.  Il y a tant de choses à apprendre des modules interactifs de ce musée. Je me souviens d’avoir couru de l’un à l’autre avec mes copains. À présent, c’est nous qui y emmenons nos enfants. On peut y fêter un anniversaire, participer à un camp de jour, voir un film IMAX ou même s’inscrire à un atelier de construction d’un tramway.

LA SALLE DE CONCERT BOURGIE I really like Bourgie Hall, a small venue that has kept its Victorian charm. I am a sponsor of the Montreal Bach Festival, which hosts a good number of concerts here. I saw the Europa Galante chamber ­­orchestra ­perform; they’re known for their rigorous ­interpretation of music from the baroque era. It was fabulous!  J’aime beaucoup la salle Bourgie, une petite place qui a gardé son cachet victorien. Je suis d’ailleurs marraine du Festival Bach de Montréal, qui y présente bon nombre de concerts. J’y ai vu l’ensemble baroque Europa Galante, ­réputé pour sa rigueur et son interprétation de la musique de cette époque. C’était fabuleux !

DA EMMA I have a soft spot for restaurants where I can savour my favourite Italian dish: spaghetti aglio e olio. It’s a very simple dish, featuring oil, garlic, salt and pepper, but it’s difficult to master. So when I find a resto that knows how to prepare it right, I’m sold.  J’ai un faible pour les endroits où je peux savourer mon mets italien favori : un spaghetti aglio e olio. C’est un plat tout simple, à base d’huile, d’ail, de sel et de poivre, mais difficile à réussir.

Quand je trouve un resto qui sait le cuisiner, je l’adopte.

LE VIEUX-PORT I work in the Old Port, on a quay in the heart of the ­historic district. The seasons change before your eyes: You can see the water beginning to freeze in late fall ­before being transformed in winter, the sheets of ice shifting in the spring, and the six million vacationers walking around in summer.  Je travaille dans le VieuxPort, sur un quai en plein cœur du quartier historique.

Les saisons passent sous nos yeux : on voit l’eau geler à ­l­’automne et se transformer au long de l’hiver, les plaques de glace se déplacer au printemps et six millions de ­vacanciers s’y promener l’été.

LE PARC OLYMPIQUE When I lived in Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, I stayed in shape by swimming in the Olympic Park Sports Centre pool, which is magnificent. Before the Stade Saputo was AV. built, I trained for years on the running track that LAURIER used to be here, too.  Quand j’habitais dans le quartier Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, j’allais nager à la piscine du Parc olympique, qui est magnifique, pour me tenir en forme.

Avant que le stade Saputo ne soit construit, il y avait une piste d’athlétisme, où je me suis longtemps entraînée.

INDIA BEAU VILLAGE I mostly opt for vegetarian dishes, like the vegetables and lentils, which are excellent. You have to be careful to avoid spicy dishes because not everyone has the same definition of spicy! As I wait for my order, I watch Bollywood movies or Indian TV.  Je choisis surtout des plats végétariens, comme des légumes et des lentilles, qui sont excellents. Il faut être prudent et éviter les plats épicés, parce qu’on n’a pas la même définition de ce mot ! En attendant ma commande, je regarde des films de Bollywood ou la télé indienne.

The crowd’s a mix, too: You’re as likely to sit alongside distinguished-looking couples sipping private-import Vinho Verde as cool-kid crews sharing pitchers of beer. Chef Eric Dupuis’ playful menu reflects the country’s roots; the batata, roasted potatoes smothered with São Jorge cheese, are a must-share.  La frontière entre restaurant, bar et cabaret est floue dans le chaleureux éclairage Art déco de ce nouvel établissement de l’avenue Laurier Ouest.
