Husband-wife team John Baker and Juli Daoust have perfected the art of balance. Their Studio Junctiondesigned gallery-and-lifestyle shop serves its dual purpose as gracefully as their selection of minimalist Japanese and Scandinavian furniture and homeware weighs form and function. When award-winning Swedish architecture firm Claesson Koivisto Rune was invited to design a product to be handcrafted in Toronto for Mjölk, they went with a riff on the name (it’s Swedish for milk). The Ceremony set’s Canadian maple and solid brass tray is reversible – serve cookies or cake wood side up or use the brass top as a trivet – while the compact porcelain milk pitcher’s concave wooden lid doubles as a bowl for sugar cubes.

Pour réaliser, à la demande du couple, un produit fait main à Toronto, le ­cabinet d’architecture s­ uédois primé Claesson Koivisto Rune s’est inspiré du nom de ­l’endroit (mjölk signifie « lait », en suédois). Réversible, le ­plateau en érable canadien et en laiton du service à thé Ceremony reçoit biscuits et gâteaux du côté bois, et fait un joli dessous-de-plat du côté laiton de 3 mm, alors que le couvercle en bois concave du petit pot à lait fait office de sucrier.

DUNHAM’S NAMESAKE

Born in Durham, England, Thomas Dunn was given the title to the then township in 1796. The unprecedented grant of Dunham – now the heart of the province’s wine industry – speaks to the respect that Dunn commanded in Lower Canada. A man of “sound wisdom, rectitude and benevolence,” he meant business from the start and wore many hats: entrepreneur, seigneur, judge, office-holder, politician and eventually colonial administrator.

For a DIY take on your upcoming nuptials, head over to the Devil’s Workshop on Queen Street West, at the edge of Trinity Bellwoods Park. In the warm, intimate studio space behind the jewellery shop storefront, owner and instructor Sarah Wan offers a popular, weekly Wedding Band Workshop. After an initial consultation to select the ring designs and materials, Wan and co-instructor Melissa Dalton guide a maximum of three couples per session through measuring, cutting, forming, ­soldering, sanding and polishing shaped bars of the chosen metal – silver or white, rose or yellow gold – into gleaming, one-of-a-kind wedding bands. No

experience is necessary, but commitment, aptly enough, is. The labour is a lengthy one as you sand and buff out imperfections to Wan’s exacting standards. Afterward, take your bands home as is or, if you wish, leave them with Wan for engraving, rhodium plating or stone-setting.  Pour convoler en justes noces avec originalité, rendez-vous au Devil’s Workshop, sur Queen Street West, en bordure du parc Trinity Bellwoods. HARBOURFRONT CENTRE I’m on the board. I sought out the position because I love the centre so much. You can go skating in winter and kayaking in summer. There’s a bench facing the water with my name on it. It’s the first place I go when I’m back in town, no matter the weather.  Je siège à son conseil. J’y tenais, car j’adore cet endroit. On peut y patiner en hiver et faire du kayak en été. J’y ai même un banc qui porte mon nom, face à l’eau. C’est là où je vais quand je reviens en ville, peu importe le temps.

AROMA FINE INDIAN CUISINE I’m Indian and when I crave good Indian, I go here.

I love the butter chicken and the Tandoori prawns. It’s not as good as my mom’s cooking, but it’s a close second. In fact, I chose Aroma to cater my parents’ 40th wedding anniversary.  Je suis d’origine indienne et quand j’ai envie de manger indien, je vais à l’Aroma. Je raffole de son poulet au beurre et de ses crevettes tandoori. Presque aussi bon que les petits plats de ma mère !

Nous y avons fêté les 40 ans de mariage de mes parents.

I ­always have the yogurt-baked fluke when I’m there; it’s a shared dish. You sit four to a round table, and share everything family-style. It’s very communal: I love that about it.  Le Byblos sert une cuisine méditerranéenne ultragoûteuse. J’y commande toujours le cardeau rôti au yogourt, à partager. À quatre autour d’une table ronde, on partage tout, comme en famille.

TRATTORIA NERVOSA The kale salad is the best in the city. If I’m there for dinner, though, I always order the same thing: the ­rigatoni pomodoro. It’s just a red sauce, but it’s so good and authentic. You’d think somebody’s Italian grandmother is in the kitchen making it.  Sa salade de chou frisé est tout simplement la ­meilleure en ville.

Au souper, ­toutefois, j’y prends des ­rigatoni ­pomodoro, en simple sauce tomate, mais tellement savoureux et authentiques ! On dirait qu’une grand-mère italienne les a préparés sur place.

À la belle saison, elle privilégie les fournisseurs locaux et complète ses bouquets avec les fleurs de son petit jardin.

Organic and unstructured are her calling cards; she doesn’t work with ­altered flowers. Instead, she suggests an ­all-natural selection of flowers to fit her clients’ vision.  Naturel et déstructuré sont ses maîtres mots : elle refuse de travailler avec des fleurs teintes. Elle trouve des variétés issues de la nature, en harmonie avec la vision de ses clients.
