Don Melchor proviene de la denominación de origen (D.O.) de Puente Alto. Está plantado en suelos aluviales, donde el Cabernet Sauvignon logra una expresión muy refinada, fina y elegante, con taninos sedosos y notas minerales.

La variedad Cabernet Franc participa con un tres por ciento en esta gran añada.

h e distinguished U.S. magazine Wine Spectator, one of the leading publications in the business, just published its “Top 100 Wines of 2014.” Among the wines chosen from around the globe, Don Melchor 2010 from the Chilean winery Concha y Toro was ranked ninth among the ten best wines in the world.

Don Melchor is grown in the Puente Alto Denomination of Origin (D.O.) in a vineyard planted in alluvial soils. The Cabernet Sauvignon grown here achieves a very refined, elegant and fine expression, with silky tannins and mineral notes. This great vintage also contains 3% Cabernet Franc.

l verano pide vinos menos corpulentos, con mayor acidez, como para acompañar el calor y, sobre todo, comidas livianas. Y lo primero que viene a la mente son blancos ligeros: Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Chardonnay… Sin embargo, también hay una oportunidad para los tintos, especialmente para aquellos que por estos días nacen en el Cono Sur.

ummer demands less full-bodied wines with more acidity to offset the heat and especially to pair with lighter summer fare. The first wines that come to mind are light whites, like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Chardonnay. But summer is also an opportunity for reds, especially those being produced in the Southern Cone these days.

Hasta hace muy poco, la idea de tintos ligeros y refrescantes –al estilo de los de Beaujolais o del Loire, en Francia– resultaba algo impensable en Sudamérica. El paradigma parecía ser lo contundente, lo dulce, lo maduro y lo voluptuoso, como sinónimo de calidad. Pero hoy una tendencia creciente es producir tintos más abordables, que van a la heladera y, luego, directo a la mesa. Por ejemplo, Polígonos San Pablo 2013, el nuevo Malbec de la bodega Zuccardi en Mendoza. ¡Nada tiene que ver con todo lo hecho con el Malbec! De apenas 12,5 grados de alcohol viene de un viñedo de 15 años a unos 1.400 msnm, sobre suelos ricos en cal y arenas, lo que le da un frescor y una tensión en la boca que lo que pide es carne a la parrilla.

Until very recently, the idea of light, refreshing red wines – in the French style of Beaujolais or Loire – was unthinkable in South America. Solid, sweet, ripe, voluptuous reds seemed to be the norm and a synonym for quality. Today, however, the trend is leaning increasingly toward approachable reds that can go directly from the fridge to the table. A fine example is Polígonos San Pablo 2013, the new Malbec from Mendoza’s Zuccardi winery. It’s unlike any other Malbec you’ve tried before. With a mere 12.5% alcohol, this wine was sourced from a 15-year-old vineyard planted at 4,600 feet above sea level in soil with abundant sand and limestone, which gives the palate a freshness and tension that demands meat fresh off the grill.

Toss Your CorksCreW! Los franceses prueban formas especiales de embotellar y los norteamericanos usan el Coravin que presentó Robert Parker. Todos tras el mismo objetivo: tomar el vino sin abrir la botella, para que no pierda sus cualidades.

El Coravin consiste en una fina aguja que se introduce a través del corcho y mediante una cápsula cargada con gas argón reemplaza a presión el vacío que deja el líquido cuando sale. Servida la copa, se saca la aguja y el corcho recupera su forma.

While the French are experimenting with new ways of bottling wine, Americans are using the Coravin, heartily promoted by Robert Parker.

They all share the same goal: to serve the wine without actually opening the bottle, so the contents remain in pristine condition. The Coravin inserts a fine needle through the cork to extract the wine, and a pressurized argon capsule fills the empty space with inert gas. Once the glass is poured, the needle retracts, and the cork springs back to its original shape. www.coravin.com

Los viticultores riojanos Marcos y Miguel Eguren, de Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria, trabajando junto al tonelero francés Taransaud, crearon una barrica con forma de huevo, Ovum. El diseño permite una elaboración biodinámica, porque el depósito crea un movimiento continuo que reduce la necesidad de intervenir en el proceso. ¿Resultado?

Un vino más sedoso e integrado, como el que hacen: Teso La Monja.

Those Spaniards really know their stuff! Rioja winemakers Marcos and Miguel Eguren of Viñedos y Bodegas Sierra Cantabria worked with French cooper Taransaud to create an eggshaped barrel called the Ovum. The design is favorable for biodynamic winemaking because the shape fosters the continuous movement of the wine, reducing the need to intervene in the process. The result? A silkier, more integrated wine, like Teso La Monja.

West of Tokyo, in one of Japan’s top winegrowing regions, Yamanashi University will begin offering a degree in Wine Sciences in 2015. The area is home to 80 wineries growing Koshu grapes (of the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc family) and producing wines already acclaimed by distinguished experts. The coursework will address harvesting and winemaking, the work of sommeliers and the legal systems governing wine in different countries. “The quality of Japan’s wines has improved tremendously, now they just have to be marketed. With sommeliers, we will be able to release wines that pair with Japanese cuisine, which is increasingly popular around the world,” explains Professor Fujitoshi Yanagida. www2.yamanashi.ac.jp

i hablamos de complementos, lo primero que se nos viene a la mente es que una buena botella de vino necesitará siempre de una copa. Eso, hasta que conocemos a Gabriela Furlotti. Porque su botella encuentra perfecto complemento no en el cristal, sino en un hotel hecho a su escala, que se inserta, casi mágicamente, en el viñedo mismo, en Chacras de Coria, Luján de Cuyo.

Her wines find the perfect complement not in crystal but in a hotel built to scale and set, as if by magic, in the middle of the vineyard at Chacras de Coria, Luján de Cuyo.

Her family’s project, Adalgisa, is like a set of nesting dolls.

The Adalgisa experience begins when you are immersed in an authentic and traditional dynamic that few in the area – and quite possibly in the country – could hope to replicate. “Here, you can take a cooking class, eat llama ribs and experience Argentina’s famous asado (cookout). You can’t put a price on that,” says Furlotti. And, she adds, you can try wine that you can’t even buy (except in a single Mendoza restaurant), right in the vineyard where it’s grown and, if you wish, do a vertical tasting from the first vintage in 2004 to the most recent in 2009. This is a Malbec with a clear genealogy and a history all its own.

Como tampoco lo tiene –agrega– probar un vino que no está en el mercado (salvo en un restaurante mendocino) en el lugar donde nace y, eventualmente, degustar una vertical desde 2004, año de su primera vendimia, hasta la cosecha vigente, de 2009. Un Malbec que posee línea cronológica y ya cuenta una historia.

And when Furlotti calls Adalgisa her home, it’s not a metaphor: she actually lives here with her mother, on the estate where her grandparents planted the first trees, her parents planted the next generation, and Furlotti, the newest ones. When you enter the home of a family that has winemaking in its blood, you’ll find that the surroundings and the wine – which is to say, the container and the contents – give testament to this history. The winery itself is far from high tech. There are no pumps to move the wine, no pneumatic presses, no chilling machines or large laboratories. Horses are used to plough the fields, and the winemaking process is gravity fed. “Everything is done by hand, the oldfashioned way,” she emphasizes. And this effort earned a respectable score of 93 points in wine expert Patricio Tapia’s Guía Descorchados.

El campo se ara con caballos y los caldos se mueven por gravedad. “Todo se hace a mano, a la antigua”, enfatiza. Trabajo que le valió los no menores 93 puntos de la guía Descorchados, del periodista especializado Patricio Tapia.

Furlotti describes her wine as “elegant and European, refreshing rather than concentrated.” In his wine guide, Tapia calls it “a well-kept secret.” It’s a red that pairs easily with pasta dishes, cheeses and red meats, like the vast majority of Malbecs, but this one stands out for its finesse and meticulous crafting. “I chose Carmelo Patti as an advisor, because I admire him for his wine, his philosophy, his commitment, his experience and his honesty,” says Furlotti. And without a doubt, it all comes together, magically: the wine and the glass, the estate and the hotel, the container and the contents.

Difícil encontrar un mejor vino para el aperitivo que el Fino o, su hermana, la Manzanilla. refrescantes, ácidos, perfumados, ligeros y suaves. En el espacio de aire que queda en el interior se forma un delgado velo de levaduras gracias al cual el oxígeno no estropea los aromas frutales ni oscurece el color de Finos y Manzanillas.

del secreto… Las brisas del mar y ese tipo de calizas imprimen al vino (hecho de la muy neutral cepa Palomino Fino) aromas salinos, minerales, frutales y, al mismo tiempo, terrosos. No obstante, la particularidad de muchos jereces es su método de elaboración. Primero, la presencia de la “flor”, ese delgado velo de levaduras que lo protegen de la oxidación. Es tradicional que las “botas” de jerez –barricas de unos 600 litros– se llenen solo en parte. Así, el espacio de aire que queda en el interior permite que se forme ese velo y gracias a eso el oxígeno no estropea los aromas frutales ni oscurece el color de los Finos y Manzanillas. Por eso, por lo general, son pálidos, casi transparentes.

Entre sus muchas otras particularidades tenemos su forma de crianza. Los bodegueros disponen las barricas en distintos niveles, como grandes torres. Las más cercanas al suelo (o “soleras”) contienen los vinos más viejos. De ellas extraen los listos para embotellar. Para rellenar esas botas, usan el vino de los barriles del nivel inmediatamente superior. Y estos, a su vez, se rellenan con los que vienen más arriba. Este sistema implica que el jerez es casi siempre una mezcla de añadas. Finos o Manzanillas suelen tener un promedio de cinco a seis años, aunque cuando uno los prueba parecen hechos ayer. Frescos, intensos en aromas salinos y minerales, dominados por una acidez crujiente y un frescor que los 17 grados de alcohol no pueden ocultar.

Uno los descorcha con sardinas fritas, almejas salteadas en ajo, boquerones u ostiones a la parrilla y también con ostras, erizos, cebiche de corvina…

Blancos para disfrutar del sol en las costas meridionales de España o en cualquier parte en donde haya sol y sed.

Esos son los Finos y Manzanillas, puerta de entrada a los vinos de Jerez. Luego, claro, están los añejados o los amontillados y olorosos, o los cream o los de viejas añadas o los de viñedos únicos o los de pequeños almacenistas.

Pero esa es otra historia.

Like the sherry produced here, Jerez is a world apart. The arid, rolling, coastal hills, with their predominantly white soils known locally as albariza, hint at the secret: the sea breezes and limestone soil imbue the wine (made with the very neutral Palomino Fino grape) with aromas that are saline, mineral and fruity, yet earthy. But what is most unique about sherry is how it’s made. First, there’s the flor, a film of yeast that protects the wine from oxidation.

Traditionally, the 600-liter sherry botas (barrels) are only partially filled. The air that remains inside enables yeast growth, which keeps the oxygen from ruining the fruit aromas and darkening the color of the Fino or Manzanilla.

For this same reason, these wines have a pale, almost transparent color.

The aging process is also unique. The winemakers keep the barrels stacked on top of one another, like great towers. Those closest to the ground (soleras) contain the oldest wines. The Finos or Manzanillas are bottled from the soleras, and then these barrels are refilled with wine from the botas immediately above, and those in turn are filled with wine from the next level up. Because of this system, sherry is almost always a blend of vintages. Finos or Manzanillas are usually aged about five or six years, even though they taste like they were made yesterday: refreshing, with intense saline and mineral aromas, dominated by crisp acidity and freshness that 17% alcohol cannot hide. Uncork one with fried sardines, clams sautéed with garlic, grilled anchovies or scallops, or with fresh oysters, sea urchins or sea bass cebiche…

These are white wines to enjoy in the sun on the southern coast of Spain or anywhere there’s sun and thirst: the Finos and Manzanillas, the gateway to the wines of Jerez.

And then, of course, there are the aged Finos and the Amontillados, the Olorosos and the Creams, the Viejas Añadas or the sherries grown in unique vineyards or by boutique producers. But that’s another story.

L

o s uruguayos somos conocidos como un pueblo humilde, reacio a vanagloriarse de sus logros. Eso impregna también al mundo del vino donde siempre se valoró lo sencillo y lo bueno por encima de lo exótico. Hace 30 años solíamos tomar mayormente mostos de mesa, sin prestar demasiada atención a varietales o bodegas.

Sin embargo, el vino ha sido parte esencial de la cultura de esta nación de inmigrantes. Los abuelos enseñaban a pisar la uva en las tardes de verano para hacerlo con el método artesanal traído de Europa. Y aunque ahora los niños difícilmente tengan esa experiencia, todo lo relacionado con producción y oferta se enriqueció mucho en las últimas décadas.

La estrella es el Tannat, un tinto con gran cuerpo y personalidad, gracias a la fuerte presencia de taninos. Originaria de Madiran, Francia, la uva –de color oscuro y cáscara gruesa– llegó en 1874 gracias a un inmigrante vasco.

Pasó más de un siglo de existencia casi anónima hasta que el Tannat uruguayo encontró su lugar, cosechando numerosos premios internacionales y muchas veces superando a sus pares franceses.

Richard Jennings, un experto radicado en San Francisco, hace poco definió a Uruguay como un “país de gente acogedora y relajada, comida deliciosa y playas limpias y seguras”.

Ese boom turístico también se extendió al vino. Hoy resulta fácil acceder

ruguayans are famous for their modesty. We’re reluctant to brag about our achievements, and this characteristic extends to the world of wine, where good, simple vintages have always been valued above exotic ones. Thirty years ago, we were drinking mainly table wine and paid little attention to varietals and brandname wineries.

And yet wine has played a special role in the culture of this nation of immigrants. On summer afternoons, our grandparents taught us to stomp the grapes to make homemade wine in the traditional way they had brought from Europe. And although most of our children won’t get to have this particular experience, local wine production and the range of products available have expanded exponentially in recent decades.

The star of the show is Tannat, a big-bodied red bursting with personality thanks to its notable tannins. Originally from Madiran, France, these dark-colored, thickskinned grapes came to the New World in 1874 with a Basque immigrant.

After spending nearly a century in virtual anonymity, Uruguay’s Tannat has finally taken its rightful place, earning numerous international awards and often surpassing its French counterparts.

Not long ago, San Francisco-based wine expert Richard Jennings called

Los aficionados además cuentan con una opción atractiva en el hotel temático My Suites, donde cada piso está auspiciado por una bodega y la cata forma parte de la estadía. Premiado por Tripadvisor como el hotel más popular de Montevideo, tiene entre sus “socios” a una decena de bodegas líderes en el mercado.

¿El próximo Malbec?

Pieza clave en el gran cambio de la cultura del vino tiene que ver con el trabajo de organismos como Wines of Uruguay que en septiembre del año pasado organizó el segundo Tannat tour de los Estados Unidos. Ahí llevó lo más selecto de la producción uruguaya a Boston, Fort Lauderdale y Chicago. Los eventos atrajeron gran atención de los medios locales, a tal punto que entre expertos norteamericanos ya se habla del Tannat como “el próximo Malbec”.

Famoso por su “carácter”, el Tannat puede tener un efecto avasallador en quienes lo prueban por primera vez. Originalmente se usaba como complemento de otras uvas, pero fue ganando espacios en su versión en solitario y ya puede representar una opción más amable al paladar que sus pares franceses.

Consultados acerca de las posibilidades de expansión de los vinos uruguayos en Estados Unidos, los representantes de Vinos Finos H. Stagnari aseguran que el Tannat ha abierto muchas puertas y que si bien el volumen de producción de todo el país equivale al de una sola bodega argentina de Malbec, esto no es un problema porque “nosotros nos abocamos a una alta calidad y no a la cantidad, eso nos juega a favor”.

“Uruguay destaca entre los llamados productores del Nuevo Mundo gracias a la influencia del clima atlántico, que da mayor acidez y frescura a los vinos”, afirma Cristina Santoro, de Bodega Bouza. “Nuestro pequeño volumen y la diferenciación los hacen especiales para su venta en gastronomía o comercios especializados”. Santoro considera que las bondades del Tannat para el maridaje con las carnes rojas pueden ser las catalizadoras para asegurar su llegada al gran público internacional.

One attractive option for wine lovers is the thematic hotel My Suites, where each floor is sponsored by a local winery and tasting is an integral part of your stay. Recognized by Tripadvisor as the most popular hotel in Montevideo, My Suites has partnered with a dozen of the country’s leading wineries.

The Next Malbec?

The great cultural shift in the country’s wine industry can be credited to the work of entities like Wines of Uruguay, which organized the second U.S. tour of Tannat in September of last year, bringing Uruguay’s top wines to Boston, Fort Lauderdale and Chicago. The tour earned so much media attention that U.S. experts are now referring to Tannat as “the next Malbec.”

Famous for its notable “character,” Tannat can be overwhelming for those trying it for the first time. Originally used to complement other varieties, it gradually gained ground as a varietal in its own right and now even offers a more palate-friendly option than its French counterparts.

When asked about the potential market for Uruguayan wines in the United States, representatives of Vinos Finos H. Stagnari assure us that Tannat has opened a lot of doors already. The country’s total production volume is still only equal to that of a single Argentinean winery bottling Malbec, but this isn’t a problem, because H. Stagnari “is committed to quality rather than quantity, and that works in our favor.”

“Uruguay stands out among the so-called New World producers for its Atlantic climate, which gives us more acidic, refreshing wines,” says Cristina Santoro of Bodega Bouza. “Our low volume and unique characteristics make our wines especially ideal for sale in gourmet shops and restaurants.” Santoro believes that the merits that make Tannat an excellent pairing for red meats will ensure this variety’s attractiveness to international wine consumers.

Tanto Bouza –bodega de privilegiado posicionamiento internacional–, como H. Stagnari, productora de los Tannats más premiados, coinciden en que el uruguayo está mucho más abierto a experimentar nuevos vinos. Bouza ha tenido gran éxito con su Albariño y el innovador Tempranillo-Tannat, un corte que no se da en otras partes del mundo, “ya que difícilmente se encuentra otra región donde se produzca Tempranillo y Tannat en el mismo lugar”.

Bouza, an internationally renowned winery, and H. Stagnari, producer of the most-awarded Tannats, both agree that Uruguay has become much more open to trying new wines. Bouza has had great success with its Albariño and the innovative Tempranillo-Tannat, a blend found nowhere else on the planet, “since it’s hard to find a region where Tempranillo and Tannat grow in the same place.”

Para Stagnari, su premiado y popular Tannat Viejo es la estrella. Sin embargo, la bodega no descuida el desarrollo de otros productos como el Ocho Viejos, corte de ocho variedades de uva, añejado en barricas de roble francesas.

Producen también interesantes varietales como el Petit Verdot y el Syrah.

En el medallero internacional, los Tannats siempre llevan la delantera.

Sin embargo, entre los premiados en 2014 además figuran el Garzón Sauvignon Blanc 2013, el Garzón Pinot Noir 2012 y el Don Jacinto Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011. En materia de cortes, al margen de los numerosos galardones obtenidos por sus clásicos Tannats, Stagnari obtuvo el año pasado cuatro medallas con el Gran Guarda Tannat Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 y una con el Amaneceres de Daymán Tannat Petit Verdot 2011.

At H. Stagnari, the popular, award-winning Tannat Viejo is the star of the show. However, the winery is not putting all its grapes in one basket – so to speak – but also developing other products, like Ocho Viejos, an eight-variety blend aged in French oak barrels. They also produce interesting varietals such as Petit Verdot and Syrah.

On the international awards scene, Tannats are always center stage, but other 2014 prizewinners include Garzón Sauvignon Blanc 2013, Garzón Pinot Noir 2012 and Don Jacinto Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2011.

In terms of blends, apart from the numerous medals won for its classic Tannats, last year H. Stagnari earned four medals for its Gran Guarda Tannat Cabernet Sauvignon 2011 and one for the Amaneceres de Daymán Tannat Petit Verdot 2011.

Stagnari) Rojo intenso con fuertes reflejos violáceos. tiene un abanico de aromas con predominio de frutos rojos –cerezas, ciruelas, guindas y pasas de higo–, mezcladas a la perfección con la sutil vainilla de su crianza en barricas nuevas de roble francés de tostado medio. de largo final gracias a sus maduros taninos y muy sutil ahumado. dark red with notable violet highlights, this wine delivers an array of aromas that feature standout red fruit (sweet and tart cherries, plum and dried figs) perfectly paired with subtle vanilla notes from aging in medium toast French oak barrels. the finish is long, thanks to its ripe tannins and very subtle smoke notes.

Resalta el pimiento rojo propio del Cabernet, con los higos secos y vestigios de tinta aportados por el tannat, finalizando en la vainilla y el chocolate provenientes de la barrica de roble francés. sus taninos maduros afirman su estructura.

Ruby-red with blue highlights, this wine has Cabernet’s typical standout red bell pepper notes along with dried figs and hints of ink from the tannat, finishing off with chocolate and vanilla notes from the French oak aging and ripe tannins that underpin its structure.

Sándwich de langostinos Marinar los langostinos sin cabeza ni cola, con la piel del limón, láminas de jengibre y albahaca por 6 horas. Luego cocinar en una plancha bien caliente.

Limpiar los calamaretis, pasarlos por huevo batido con sal y apanarlos en panko. Freír en aceite de girasol. abrir la baguete, poner la lechuga, el pepino, los langostinos y los calamaretis. seguir con el maní, la mayonesa y el sweet chilli.

Terminar con las hojas de cilantro.

Prawn Sandwich Peel prawns, remove heads, marinate in lemon zest, ginger slices and basil for six hours, then cook on a hot grill.

Clean the squid, dip in well-beaten egg (seasoned with salt), coat in Panko and fry in sunflower oil. slice the baguette and place the lettuce, cucumber, prawns and squid inside. Top with the peanuts, mayonnaise and sweet chili sauce.

Sándwich de solomillo de cerdo Salpimentar el solomillo y sellar en una sartén; cocerlo en horno medio por 15 minutos. Para ahumarlo, encender un leño que dé humo y dejar descansar el solomillo caliente por 10 minutos arriba de él.

Luego cortar en láminas bien finas.

Rebanar delgado la berenjena y el zucchini; dorar en una plancha con aceite de oliva.

Blanquear los espárragos, después dorar.

Frotar las rodajas de pan con dientes de ajo y llevar a una sartén con mantequilla. Dejar bien crocante.

Para armar, poner la mostaza de Dijon sobre el de pan. Añadir láminas de solomillo, el queso en lascas, las verduras y alcaparras.

Pelar los higos, mezclarlos con oliva, y albahaca. Poner esa mezcla por encima de todo y cerrar el sándwich.

Season the pork tenderloin with salt and pepper and sear in a pan, and then bake in a medium-hot oven for 15 minutes. To smoke, set the hot pork over a smoky piece of wood for ten minutes. Cut into thin slices.

Slice eggplant and zucchini finely and brown with olive oil on a hot griddle.

Blanch the asparagus, then brown.

Rub the bread slices with garlic then butter and place in a pan, fry until crisp.

To assemble the sandwich, spread mustard on one slice of bread, add pork tenderloin slices, cheese, vegetables and capers. Peel the figs, mash them together with olive oil and basil; spread this paste on other slice and place on top.

Si fuese un vino, sería un ensamblaje.

Las mezclas se le dan bien porque es argentina de nacimiento, hija de madre argentina y padre cubano, y creció entre Colonia Sacramento (Uruguay), Santiago de Chile, y Maracay (Venezuela).

Con su metro 81 de altura, en Venezuela comenzó una carrera de modelo que, a los 19, la llevó a trabajar en Europa.

“No me sentía guapa, lo que quería era viajar”, confiesa. Recorrió Austria, Hungría, Grecia y los países nórdicos.

El modelaje la trajo de vuelta, pero de las pasarelas pasó al vino: empezó en la Guía Turística de la Ruta del Maule, estudió para sommelier y estuvo 12 años en Planetavino, hasta ser editora, productora de la guía Descorchados y publicar Vino de la A a la Z (2005) y Vino y Compañía (2007).

Ahora es periodista independiente, da clases en la Escuela de Sommeliers; comparte sus maridajes y panoramas en el suplemento Finde del diario La Tercera y de lunes a viernes hace Reina de Copas de Radio Universo.

“Mi rol es acercar a la gente al vino, para disfrutar, entender, probar y conversar. Mi gran tema es el maridaje”, reconoce.

Sueña con tener un viñedo propio y con llevar a todo Chile un “bar itinerante” con una barra que ofrezca las más de 70 etiquetas que seleccionaron con Rafael García y Santos, de Boutique Terroirs.

If she were a wine, she’d be a blend.

Assemblage suits her – after all, Mariana Martinez was born in Argentina to a Cuban father and an Argentinean mother, and she spent her childhood in Colonia Sacramento (Uruguay), Santiago (Chile) and Maracay (Venezuela).

Standing five foot nine, Martinez began her modeling career in Venezuela and was working in Europe by the time she was 19. “I didn’t think I was gorgeous, but I wanted to travel,” she confesses.

And travel she did, to Austria, Hungary, Greece and then Scandinavia.

Modeling brought Martinez back to the Americas, but she soon traded the runway for wine, first working on the Guia Turística de la Ruta del Maule and then studying to be a sommelier. She spent 12 years at Planetavino, where she became an editor, producing the Guia de Descorchados and Vino de la A a la Z (2005) and Vino y Compañía (2007). Today, Martinez is a freelance writer who teaches at Chile’s Escuela de Sommeliers. She shares pairing tips and more in Finde, a weekend supplement of La Tercera newspaper. Weekdays, she hosts Reina de Copas on Radio Universo.

“My job is to bring people closer to wine, to help them enjoy, understand, taste and share. My main focus is pairing.”

Her dream? To own a vineyard and to take a “traveling bar” around Chile, with a collection of more than 70 labels that she selected with the assistance of Rafael Garcia y Santos from Boutique Terroirs.
