his eco-tourism mecca, dubbed The Route of Parks of Patagonia, was recently launched by Tompkins Conservation to highlight Chile as the perfect example of what tourism based on conservation can achieve. “We want Chile to be internationally recognised for having the most spectacular scenic route in the world, and thus become a benchmark for economic development based on conservation. The Route of Parks is a protected heritage of all Chileans, and its 17 National Parks are a challenge and an opportunity for the more than 60 communities that live near them and for those who visit them,” explained Carolina Morgado, Executive Director of Tompkins Conservation Chile. Kristine Tompkins, President of Tompkins Conservation and UN Environment Patron of Protected Areas, added: “This has been possible thanks to the work of different actors of the public and private sector, who have seen conservation not only as an effective tool to preserve ecosystems and counteract climate change, but also as an engine of local economies.” Determined to protect its environment and natural resources, the Chilean government worked with like-minded partners to create this unprecedented route that includes millions of acres of donated land to create the National Parks, including five new parks (Pumalín Douglas Tompkins, Melimoyu, Cerro Castillo, Patagonia, and Kawésqar), and expand three others already in existence (Hornopirén, Corcovado, and Isla Magdalena). These National Parks help to form the Patagonian Route of Parks: 28 million acres of protected land in 17 National Parks—the equivalent of three times the size of Switzerland, or more than twice the size of Costa Rica. Come to Chile for the adventure, leave with a renewed respect for nature! ! JPS/F19 tompkinsconservation.org, rutadelosparques.org, www.chile.travel/en
