Home to the historic and ever-evolving Kennedy Space Center and Canaveral Air Force Station, it is the place from where humankind was launched to the moon and probes have been sent into the farthest reaches of the solar system.

All of Brevard’s historic communities were part of an inland waterway, and that ambiance is still seen as you travel about the county. Driving the breathtaking South Tropical Trail through Merritt Island, which splits the Indian River to form the Banana River, you pass lovely homes built on what were once orange and mango groves. Since the early 20th Century, Cocoa and Rockledge were important centers of life and commerce. Visiting historic Downtown Cocoa, its playhouse, boutiques and striking waterfront park captures a new take on a nostalgic location. Another beautiful waterfront drive, SR 515, winds along the western shore of the Indian River, featuring an unrivaled blend of residential architecture and a tropical paradise.

The largest city in Brevard, both in land area (67 square miles) and in population (over 100,000), is Palm Bay. It is one of the county’s primary manufacturing hubs and home to much of Harris Corporation's facilities. South Brevard has every imaginable housing choice from starter homes and condominiums, to executive and ranch estates. They also feature Bay Side Lakes, a large master planned golf community.

Valcaria and Grant, well known for its Sea Food Festival, borders the south, along with the famous Stick Marsh, one of the most celebrated bass fishing locations in the country.

STICK MARSH

Stick Marsh is a 6,500-acre impoundment located along the east coast of central Florida. Stick Marsh was created in 1987 and opened to the public around 1991. Water depths range from 4 to 8 feet. Popular sport fish include largemouth bass, bluegill, redear sunfish, black crappie and several catfish species.

With the good fortune of geography and farsighted civic leadership, wherever you are on the Space Coast, you aren’t far from the beach, nor are the beach front communities far from the mainland.

Connected from north to south by five, four-lane causeways, access is easy for those that come to play or to live.

Starting with Cape Canaveral in the north central area, bordering Port Canaveral, to the celebrated coastal community of Cocoa Beach, life and lifestyle don't get better. Following the curve of the coastline south, you’ll find Patrick Air Force Base, followed by the ocean front condominiums and canal front homes of Satellite Beach. Continuing south, you find one unique coastal community after another, including Indian Harbour Beach, Indialantic and then Melbourne Beach, before reaching the county’s terminus at Sebastian Inlet.

Sebastian Inlet, located in Sebastian Inlet State Park in Brevard County, Florida and Indian River County, Florida, offers surfing and fishing opportunities. It is off State Road A1A just 12 miles north of Vero Beach. There are annual surf tournaments, professional and amateur.

Visitors fish there, particularly for Snook and Redfish.

Few things make a region more attractive and more vibrant than their public-school system, and that is an area where the Space Coast excels.

Brevard Public Schools is the 49th largest district in the United States and the 10th largest district in Florida. As the largest employer in Brevard County, BPS employs approximately 9,300 staff members serving over 73,000 students annually, that includes 83 schools, 10 special centers and 12 charter schools.

With a commitment to serving the community and enhancing students’ lives, they deliver the highest quality education backed by a culture of dedication, collaboration and learning.

ACADEMICS • In 2018, BPS ranked 2nd in graduation rate among the 15 largest districts in Florida.

• All grade 11 students took the ACT in 2017, outperforming college-bound students in Florida.

• In 2017, participation in accelerated program exams increased; AP students outperformed the state on their exams and 356 A.A. degrees were awarded to BPS students.

ACHIEVEMENTS • 64 earned state Five Star awards for volunteerism and community engagement • 25 were deemed state Schools of Excellence, earning greater autonomy • Four were named National Blue-Ribbon Schools • None are “F” schools RANKINGS BPS ranks No. 2 in the state for the number of industry certifications granted per graduate.

BPS ranks No. 2 for how well it prepares college majors for STEM fields – and No. 1 for the percentage of students who take physics.

BPS was the No.1-rated district for reading and writing performance in grades 6-10.

The median teacher salary in 2017-2018 was $45,450.

Freedom 7 in Cocoa Beach is Florida’s No.1-rated elementary school based on percentage of points earned on the state’s school-grading scale.

Nearly one-quarter of the 70,985 students in Brevard public schools attended a campus other than their neighborhood school in 2017-2018.
