Without a Heart, it’s just a machine. So in 1971, a little Heart built a different kind of airline—one that made sure everyone could fly. Everyone has important places to go. So we invented low-fares to help them get there. To us, you’re not 1A or 17B. You’re a person with a name, like Steve. Here, we think everyone deserves to feel special, no matter where you sit or how much you fly. And with all the places we’re going next, we’ll always put you first, because our love of People is still our most powerful fuel. Some say we do things differently. We say, why would we do things any other way? Without a Heart, it’s just a machine.

First, we’d like to thank La Moda Boutique for providing the clothing, and Swanky Sole for providing the shoes and accessories, all of which were worn by our models. You can’t do Hollywood glam without the proper wardrobe, right? We’d like to thank Sorelli Hair and Spa for creating the hair and makeup looks that transported our lovely ladies to a different era, as well as Cocoa Village Playhouse for providing such amazing props. We’d also like to thank Envoy Aviation for allowing us to shoot at their airstrip, as well as for providing the planes which served as part of our beautiful backdrop. And finally, we want to thank American Muscle Car Museum for providing their beautiful, antique cars, which were truly the cherry on top of a perfect shoot.

hen Coral Reef Travel owner Amy Ziesel founded her agency in the Irish Catholic Wall Street community of Manhasset, New York in 1982, the world was a much different place. The process of travel planning has shifted enormously over the past 36 years, but what has remained constant and unchanging are the sense of excitement and wonder, the need for expertise and guidance, and the reality that even the best-laid plans often go awry. So when she recently relocated to Viera to care for her mother after her father passed away, Ziesel — a top producer in the luxury market —

athers are often stereotyped as rigid or uninvolved … I have always found that strange. Arguably, mothers may be more nurturing by nature than our fathers; however, this doesn’t mean fathers don’t want to love and protect us in every step we take. My father, like many, was the primary “bread-winner” of the house, and while this meant I did see my mom more often, I can’t ever remember a time where my dad wasn’t around to play basketball, watch tv with me at night or attend one of my many orchestra concerts. Like my mom, he made it a point to be as involved with my life as possible; like my mom, my father is my biggest fan and confidant.

I always looked up to my father as a hero-figure, which is something we tried to capture in our cover feature. I wanted to show the softer side to fathers that we so rarely see in pop culture and media, and we wanted the children of the featured fathers to be dressed in their dad’s clothing. Similar to every issue, we created content for fashion, dining, health and home, and we hope you enjoy spending the time celebrating, not only our roundup of incredible fathers, but the roundup of incredible businesses operating here on the Space Coast. This June, let’s be thankful for the incredible community in which we live and for the variety of incredible fathers we know and love.

DAY TO PLAY BY SARA SANTORA, MANAGING EDITOR SARA@SPACECOASTMAGAZINES.COM

A modern woman has a lot on her plate. Whether you are a full-time parent, a career woman or a go-getter of any kind – which, let’s be real, most women are – there is a lot that needs to be packed into a 24-hour day. Of course, life isn’t all about the hustle, and it’s important that we figure out how to incorporate our date nights, girls’ nights and client dinners into our already busy work schedules. With so much to do and so little time, it’s crucial to have a wardrobe that allows easy transitions from day to play. Thankfully, in most industries, the traditional, business-casual look is slowly becoming a thing of the past. While it’s always appropriate to have a few power suits ready to go, rules are becoming less rigid, and it is becoming more acceptable to wear brighter colors, bold prints and yes, more allaround comfortable clothing. That said, it is important to keep versatility in mind when expanding your wardrobe. Does that mean you can’t have clothing that’s just for fun? Absolutely not! However, a versatile wardrobe will help save you time and space. It also reduces your anxiety during your busiest days. Just think: no more planning your day down to the second to ensure you make it home in time to change before heading right back out the door or worrying you’re over or underdressed. With so much to worry about, creating a wardrobe that will allow you to feel comfortable and confident all day and all night might be better stress relief than meditation.

This jumpsuit is perfect for a night out, and yes, is perfect for a day at the office as well. To make this work appropriate, add a blazer or cardigan, swap bold jewelry for something more delicate and wear close-toed heels.

Bright colors are always a great choice in the Sunshine State. To make a bright dress like this work appropriate, throw on a blazer, exchange statement jewelry for something minimalistic and wear a close-toed heel.

This dress is simple and sweet. Because it’s already so nice, the only adjustments you’ll have to make are with your jewelry and shoes. Remember, tame it down for day and liven things up for evening.

JEWELRY

HOW TO BUY A DIAMOND

BY HOLLY WESCHE, AGS CERTIFIED GEMOLOGIST AND OWNER OF WESCHE JEWELERS

It’s time to buy a diamond A very emotional, yet practical decision needs to be made. Having more knowledge will help you feel more confident as you start the search for this special diamond, perhaps for an engagement ring or a larger diamond to go in your favorite pendant. So, let’s begin. When buying a diamond, remember the The Four Cs: cut, color, clarity and carat weight. These are the four factors that determine the value of a diamond. There is a Fifth C to consider and that is cost. Every slight variance in cut, color, clarity and carat weight affects the cost. However, of these “Cs,” the most important factor is the cut, or the proportions of the diamond. This is what determines the sparkle of the diamond. Color is simply the body color—or lack thereof—and clarity refers to the internal characteristics of the diamond. Carat weight is not a quality factor; it’s the weight of the diamond that affects the price. The goal is to achieve the look you desire within the price range you have decided to pay. The purchase of a diamond is not just about the price, but the right combination of the 4 Cs to give you the most value for your dollar.

22 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOAST L I V I N G .CO M

Grade A professional Since a grade is only as good as the grader, it is important to work with an experienced professional when selecting a diamond. There are many places where you can buy a diamond and there are all kinds of companies with whom you can deal. You need to select a company and a salesperson that you feel good about; you need to choose someplace and someone you can trust. In general, great companies strive to hire great people, so you want to deal with a great company, a great jeweler. What defines a great jeweler? My recommendation is to look for a jeweler who has the Three Es: expertise, experience and ethics. To be more specific, we’re talking about gemological expertise, jewelry industry experience and good ethics.

Buyer beware Don’t buy your diamond based solely on a diamond grading report. There are many laboratories that issue diamond grading reports (often called “certs”). However, the most reputable diamond grading reports are issued by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and the

American Gem Society (AGS). As a jewelry expert, I strongly advise you to ignore all other diamond grading reports. The diamond grading information on these other reports is typically inaccurate, so don’t be fooled by paperwork that looks and sounds “official.” The purchase of a diamond is an important decision. It’s not only a lot of money, but there can be a lot of emotion involved as well. It’s wise to do some research and deal with a company that makes the process not only enjoyable, but leaves you with peace of mind about your purchase. If you’d like more detailed information, Wesche Jewelers offers a FREE Diamond Buyer’s Kit that contains an extensive educational report filled with facts, tips and insider information about buying a diamond. Visit www.weschejewelers.com.

Don’t fall for fictitious discounting. Do you really believe that the $6,000 diamond solitaire ring that is on sale for $2,999 is truly a $6,000 value? It might not even be a $3,000 value. All jewelry stores have sales from time to time but stores that focus on the discount game rarely offer true value. There’s always a sale but there’s often no real savings.

DENTISTRY

WHAT MAKES EXCEPTIONAL DENTISTRY EXCEPTIONAL? WHERE THE PATIENTS AND DOCTOR ARE BFF A prominent Central Florida banker once commented, “They like us and then they find they like the way we do business.” That same formula has applied to Dr. Beverly Rose and her thriving Exceptional Dentistry practice in Melbourne for over two decades. Though dental services are something we all see as a necessity, being able to personally connect with a dentist who genuinely cares about you as a person is what makes someone look forward to – rather than dread — dental visits. It is taking the time to not only engage with patients, but to select and train all her personnel with that outlook that causes patients to drive from as far as Vero Beach for her services. “I have patients who have been with me since they were just kids, and now they are bringing their children to me so that the experience can continue for them,” Dr.

BY ERIC WRIGHT PUBLISHER

Rose shared. Few have such an infectious enthusiasm about their work, their employees and the people who look to them for health care services. As Much Passion as Practice Dr. Rose began her journey towards dentistry when she had a fateful encounter with another dentist. At the time, she was trying to decide what she wanted to do for a career. She liked the medical field, as it was a place where she could make a difference in people’s lives and gave her an opportunity for meaningful interaction. A St. Petersburg/Tampa native, she thought about medical school or pharmacy and even worked as a pharmacy tech. Then, she met Dr. Angela Rasmussen, whose enthusiasm for dentistry spread like a wildfire in Dr. Rose. “She had balanced her personal and professional life so well, I knew that dentistry was the place for me,”

Dr. Rose

she said. Dr. Rose volunteered in Rasmussen’s office to get a deeper understanding of what it was like, but witnessing the love Rasmussen had for what she did and her love for her patients closed the deal.

Beverly Rose, DMD

Always Gentle, Always Friendly

“I regularly have young women come in and shadow me or ask about a career in dentistry,” Dr. Rose said. “I get so excited sharing with them, I can hardly contain myself.” Making Connections When you are passionate about making meaningful connections with your patients, you realize the best way to achieve that is to have meaningful relationships with your staff. “Honestly, my staff are my best friends,” she said. When it comes to quality of life and self-image, your dentist is often more critical than your primary physician. Dr. Rose develops that kind of trust by carefully listening to her patients’ questions and concerns. “I practice dentistry, but what I do is develop relationships and friends … I have close to 4,000 friends,” she said. “Also, my patients might be here for an hour, but I’ll only see them for 15 minutes. That means my team has to have that same sense of customer service and customer care; that is what makes this place and this team exceptional.”

ROOFING

4 MYTHS ABOUT HAIL DAMAGE BY BILL STILLWELL OWNER OF HIPPO ROOFING

Florida’s weather is known for its unpredictability. Many may remember the unexpected hailstorm that blew our way back in March. Though the storm passed rather quickly, it left damage for many homeowners across Brevard County. With this in mind, it is important to understand the facts surrounding hail damage. Though hail is rare in our area, it’s good to be prepared. You never know when a storm could strike.

4 common misconceptions after a hail storm: I don’t see any damage; I think my roof is okay. NOT TRUE: To the untrained eye hail damage is not detectable; only trained professionals can truly tell you if your roof is damaged. My roof is not leaking, so it must be fine. NOT TRUE: Hail damage is many times very insidious. Your roof may not leak for months after a hailstorm; however, the damage has already been done, and your roof is being exposed at an accelerated rate.

26 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M

My roof is too old. My insurance company will not cover a replacement if necessary. NOT TRUE: Almost all insurance companies pay for full replacement on a damaged roof regardless of the age.

If I file a claim, my insurance company will raise my rates, or worse yet, cancel my insurance. NOT TRUE: Insurance companies can and do look at damages paid out over specific areas and will raise rates on entire zip codes. Not filing a claim based on the assumption that it will keep your rates lower is unwise. In fact, a new roof can lower your insurance premium.

3 Important things to know: 1. Free Inspection: Tile roofs are often not damaged to the point of requiring replacement, whereas shingled roofs are much more likely to incur damage, especially if the roofs are a few years old. One should always have their tile roof inspected after a hailstorm. Failure to have a free inspection could cost the owner tens of thousands of dollars. Don’t fail to have an expert check. 2. Signs of damage: Excessive granules coming off of the roof after a rain. Granules on driveways, accumulating near downspouts, in the gutters, etc. 3. Always have someone inspect your roof that is specifically trained in hail damage: Not everyone, including many roof contractors, understands hail damage. Best advice: Always be proactive and do not use storm chasers. Call a local company like Hippo Roofing LLC, a licensed A+ rated roofing contractor whose principals have completed thousands of damage claims. Ask for a free roof inspection by this reputable contractor.

GIVING

SPACE COAST EARLY INTERVENTION CENTER

BY HEATHER MOTRO JUNIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR Of the many challenges a parent faces, one of the greater challenges is selecting the right school where their child will start his or her educational journey. Parents of children with disabilities may feel especially daunted as they search for the school that will provide their son or daughter the love and support they deserve. At Space Coast Early Intervention Center, parents need not worry. From an age of six weeks, all the way through third grade, students both with and without disabilities receive equal opportunities and individualized care for the best possible start to their academic journey. School Director Terri Clark disputes the 20th-century, antiquated mindset that special needs children should attend separate schools, where they are surrounded only by others like themselves. Clark notes that over the last thirty years, education studies have shown this method is detrimental rather than beneficial to children. children and typically developing "role model" children attend Space Coast Early Intervention Center side-byside. Clark emphasizes, "We are a school and not an intervention center. We allow therapies to happen at our school," she continues, but SCEIC is not a therapy institute per se. While students of all cognitive abilities share the classroom, Clark and the rest of the staff at SCEIC recognize that no child is the same – everyone has unique needs and deserves individualized attention. Children with disabilities develop social, emotional and academic skills that build their confidence, spark their enthusiasm and prepare them for real-world situations. Typically, developing and gifted children gain a compassionate, tolerant attitude towards the world around them while receiving high-quality education. All students are taught the basics of communication, collaboration, movement, math, science and creative arts. Although students are admitted continually

throughout the year, class sizes remain small, allowing strong relationships to form between teachers and students. Alongside the normal 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. school day for kindergarten through third grade, Space Coast Early Intervention Center offers several special programs for younger children of all needs. Kaleidoscope Kids, who range from ages 1 to 3, work with teachers and therapists to develop age-appropriate cognitive skills. Additionally, in conjunction with the State of Florida, SCEIC provides free voluntary preschool to prepare young ones for elementary school. Gem Kids After School Educare provides creative, fun and inclusive learning activities beyond the regular school day hours. The Brain Training program gives children the opportunity to learn how

to learn, guided by instructors in one-on-one sessions. Finally, SCEIC understands that parents need recess just as much as their children. For that reason, Project Recess holds bimonthly opportunities for parents of SCEIC students to drop their kids off at the school and go out for some parents-only time. This summer, Space Coast Early Intervention Center is hard at work on several new additions to bring an even more inclusive and supportive environment to the school just in time for the 2019-2020 school year. "We are adding a baby room this summer and a third grade," Clark announces. In time, SCEIC hopes to add classes up to eighth grade. Even as the school expands, Space Coast Early Intervention Center will keep the student-teacher ratio low so that each young mind can be nurtured to become successful in his or her unique way.

For many Space Coast residents Amici’s, a popular Italian restaurant located off of Wickham Road in Suntree, is a familiar neighborhood locale. However, what they might not be aware of is that the owner, Dave Dashi, owns not only Amici’s, but the establishments next door, including Amici’s Bakery, Chef’s Table and now, The Wine Cellar. “The Wine Cellar is essentially a hybrid between a wine shop and a wine bar,” said manager, Jillian Jeffrey. “Everything is priced at a retail markup, and there is no corkage fee for you to enjoy wine with us.” This elegant yet inviting wine bar is home to around 1,000 labels. Though upscale in appearance, manager Jillian Jeffrey assures that there is a bottle for every budget, from around $14 upwards to $1,500. “The store is laid out by price point, so we want you to find your price tag, then search within that to find something for you.” The store’s selection is divided in half, one half being $30 and under, the other half above. Though each restaurant is owned and operated by Dashi, they all have their own unique personality, purpose and atmosphere. For example, as The Wine Cellar functions as a wine bar, there is no full menu. However, they do offer meat and cheese boards, as well as a dessert board. So, once you’ve finished your meal at Amici’s or Chef’s Table, you can wander into the wine bar and enjoy wine and dessert. Or, you can start your evening with a meat and cheese board before enjoying a large pasta dish or steak. Either way, you have everything you could want for an evening out within walking distance. Though you cannot bring food into the Wine Cellar, you are able to order wine to your table in one of his other restaurants. Keep in mind that although there is no corkage fee within The Wine Cellar itself, there is a reduced, $10 corkage fee to open the bottle to enjoy with your meal at Amici’s or Chef’s Table. Both of these restaurants boast their own wine

menu, they also understand that you might be feeling more adventurous and want to try something new. Amici’s opened in 2007 and since then, its success has allowed for a more-than-modest expansion with no intention of slowing down. For your next evening out, consider going to The Wine Cellar for great wine, and an even greater experience.

THE FLORIDA MAN-CATION: THE ULTIMATE GUY’S GETAWAY When word gets out about a guy’s getaway vacation trip, the classic gambling weekend in Vegas or Atlantic City often comes to mind. However, your “man-cation” doesn’t have to resemble a wild, last chance bachelor party. Depending on your group’s abilities and interests, a world of possibilities opens up. FOOD TRENDS: OAT MILK HOW TO MAKE YOUR COFFEE HEALTHIER, WITHOUT SACRIFICING FLAVOR By Brooke Ellison, RD, LD

Oat milk, not to be confused with oatmeal, is a milk alternative that’s a bit different than all the rest.

The world of wellness is an ever-evolving landscape of new trends and “super foods.” The latest trend in plant-based milk products is none other than oat milk! We’ve seen milk made from nuts and seeds, but never a grain. This is an interesting item that is capturing the hearts and stomachs of the coffee drinking community. As a registered dietitian, I feel it is important to remind my clients that though food fads often appear healthy, they may not all be beneficial or promote a healthy relationship with food.

What does the research say about oat milk? Though oat milk may be new to today’s market, there has been a fair amount of research published to support that oat milk contains cholesterol-lowering properties in both healthy individuals and those with high cholesterol. Coffee alone contains small amounts of nutrients, including potassium, niacin and magnesium. Its antioxidant properties may also decrease risk for developing chronic illnesses including cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s disease. Adding oat milk to your coffee adds an additional boost of these antioxidant properties from the vitamin E found in oats. Overall, plant-based milks like oat milk can serve as a heart healthy alternative to pro-inflammatory cow’s milk or dairy-based creamer in your morning coffee. Does that

Once you get past its color, this delicious coffee alternative is a great source of antioxidants and a perfect way to get an energy boost.

Tips to ordering healthier beverages at your local coffee shop: Not all coffee shops offer oat milk, but that’s okay! There are other ways to make your morning cup of coffee healthier. 1 Ask your barista if your favorite drink can be made sugar free or “lite.” There are so many modifications that can be made to make a seasonal drink healthier. Don’t be afraid to ask questions!

mean you should never order a coffee with dairy-based milk? Absolutely not! Low-fat dairy milk is great source of calcium and vitamin D. However, if you have a sensitivity to milk products or simply want to take healthy eating to the next level, choosing a plant-based milk is a great place to start. As new trends arise, be sure to look at the facts behind the fad. Oat milk may not be the heart healthy miracle cure, but it is a practical, healthy choice that, when added to a balanced and healthy diet, can absolutely make a difference in your overall health and wellness. What better opportunity than to add an extra boost of nutrients to your morning cup of coffee?

2 Avoid added sugars. The food industry likes to sneak sugar into so many foods that we often eat on a regular basis. To adjust your pallet, start by adding plant-based milks to your morning coffee. Plant-based milks make have their own natural sweetness and nutty flavor that may just take your everyday latte to the next level! 3 Order medium roast instead of dark. Research supports that antioxidants are at their maximum potential in medium roast coffee beans. 4 Try different sugar free syrups. These are a great way to add flavor. 5 Matcha lattes are worth a try! While it may be an acquired taste for some, this coffee alternative is packed with antioxidants and still contains the caffeine we all need to start our day! 6 Other plant-based milks to try: cashew milk, almond milk, coconut milk and hemp seed milk. A LOOK INSIDE MANGO MANOR HOW TO CREATE THE BOHO HOME YOU’VE ALWAYS DREAMED OF BY HEATHER MOTRO JUNIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR Anyone who’s ever dreamed of escaping from the day-to-day to their very own tropical island would be right at home in blogger Kelli Collins’ house. In her time in the Coast Guard, Collins visited all seven continents, collecting art and inspiration along the way. Now, she styles products and manages content for companies across the globe, all while raising her family in the playful, artful abode she calls Mango Manor. Here, Collins shares how to decorate your house to reflect a life lived in full color.

48 : SPAC ECOA ST L IVI N G | S PAC ECOAST L I V I N G .CO M

When Kelli Collins says to make a reading or lounging spot in every room, she truly means in every room.

Incorporating bright colors into your space can help you stay both creative and positive. Who wouldn’t feel inspired in this room?

J UN E 2019 : 49

Collins compares color to music, where each hue is a single tone that sounds more beautiful when harmonized with other notes. “When the combination of color you select sings to you, all that matters is that you like what you hear,” Collins says, rejecting the recent fad of minimalism in color.
To find the right colors for a room, Collins recommends taking a chance and just painting. “The only way for me to envision how a color will look in a space is to slap it on the wall!” she shares. Such was the case for her master bathroom. When the shade of yellow she painted on the walls turned out different than how she had envisioned it, she considered changing the color. But as she added 50 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOAST L I V I N G .CO M

decor, the room became her favorite in the house. “I love walking into a sunny, yellow, happy bathroom in the morning!” she adds. “Nothing says hello like yellow!” When it comes to furniture and art, Collins encourages seeking out beauty where it’s least expected. “Sometimes the whole concept and look of a space will be based on a single object around which the rest of the decor will revolve, and typically those pieces are found in seemingly innocuous places; garage sales, flea markets, roadside knick-knackeries,” Collins says.
Take her favorite piece, for example: A Tree of Life that was taken from a temple in Bali in the 1930s. Discarded behind an antique shop in Hawaii, it went unnoticed for years until it caught

With Florida’s brutal heat, home owners often avoid spending time on the porch. However, if you take the time to make it feel more like an extra room in the house, the porch can quickly become a cool place to hang out.

Don’t be afraid to play with the color or images on your walls. Fun details can help create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

KELLI COLLINS’ 5 TIPS FOR DESIGNING A NURTURING SPACE 1. Declutter the floor space. “Clear the space of all the unnecessary items and fill it up with all the things that bring you joy,” Collins explains. 2. Balance. If you have a gallery wall on one side of the room, keep the other walls simple.
 3. Make comfortable reading or lounging spots in every room. 4. Bring the outside in- plants can instantly warm up a room.
 5. Use plenty of textures and layers. “Stimulate your senses,” suggests Collins. “Candles, music, incense, lighting, favorite colors, lush textiles….it can really make a difference.”

Bring nature inside and to your bed side.

Collins’ eye. “No one had even given it a second glance,” she says. “I was ecstatic to find this piece!”

For a boho home like Mango Manor, plants mean more than just decoration. “We have designed many of our environments to steer us away from nature which is essential and fundamental to us as humans,” Collins imparts. “I love the idea of connecting nature with people and bringing the outside in.” To further the indoor jungle ambiance, Collins, with the help of her daughters, keeps bromeliads, monsteras, birds of paradise, elephant ears and more. She gets most of her plants from Emerald Nursery and Rockledge Gardens. All photos were taken by Kelli Collins.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HOUSE FEEL LIKE A HOME Your house is your haven – the place where you can be you. What matters is not square footage, not location nor the number of stories. What does matter is the ambiance that you set. Window treatments are a subtle yet powerful way to turn a house into a home.

To open up a cramped room, drapery is the way to go. "On the Space Coast, drapery is making a huge comeback," Brown notes. "With short windows or ceiling, you can add drapes to elongate and make windows look bigger than they actually are."

Blinds of All Kinds’ window fashion and custom drapery designer, Christine Brown, recommends watching the fashion runways to determine home trends. "Last year’s fashions were definitely reflecting gold embellishments as well as lots of blush and gentle pink," says Brown. Sure enough, Brown affirms, home design is following suit as that same color scheme is popping up in fabrics and blinds throughout the industry.

Beyond its power to expand the apparent size of windows, drapery also provides countless opportunities for personalization. For a soft, gentle atmosphere, Brown recommends drapes in neutral shades that correspond to the colors of the room. Prefer something a little quirkier? Brown suggests patterned or richly textured drapery paired with colorful pillows or artwork. "Bold patterns or colors can light up a room," says Brown. While drapery is on the rise, hard window treatments — namely, plantation

54 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M

shutters — are currently the most soug ht-after style on the Space Coast. While their solid look and feel attracts traditionalists, plantation shutters can give a room an atmosphere of nostalgic fashion or style a room with contemporary edge. According to Brown, the key to the plantation shutters' personality is its tilt rod: the bar in the center of the shutters that enables each slat of the shutter to move at the same time. "Most people associate ‘the stick in the front,’ or the tilt rod, with shutters," Brown informs. "Now, you have the option between having the tilt rod or not. When it’s not there, shutters can actually look quite modern." Brown adds that you can soften the effect of shutters by adding drapes. "But," Brown reveals, "the pièce de résistance is actually the framing around the shutter." The majority of homes in Florida have no framing or trim around their windows, but shutters come with the framing. Plus, this may increase the value of the home. Blinds of All Kinds' full-service drapery workroom is at your disposal, offering new and unique treatments, drapery and applications. Brown and the rest of the team at Blinds of All Kinds is ready to help with whatever window treatment speaks to you.

FLOORS GET FASHIONABLE

ISLAND TILE: STILL ON THE CUTTING EDGE OF EMERGING INTERNATIONAL TRENDS

BY CARRIE STEVENSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER

Over the past 35 years in the business, Melbourne-based Island Tile has seen many design trends come and go. But developments in digital technology have given international tile manufacturers the ability to create small batch orders and custom colors, which has led to a shift in the industry. “Tile has become much more like the fashion world with digital manufacturing capabilities,” Island Tile President Cliff Hirsch explains. “From the diversity of sizes to the range of colors and models, we can create so much more than we could with the more rigid processes of the past.”

Island Tile’s motto – “Where Tile Becomes Art” – fits perfectly with this modern approach, giving central Florida homeowners the ability to completely customize their home’s floorings and finishes to suit their taste. The Island Tile showroom offers a wealth of inspiration, with several colors, sizes and textures in a range of surface options, from wood-look tile to marble and beyond. Some customers arrive knowing almost exactly what they want, with the Pinterest boards to prove it. Others come in looking for guidance. Hirsch and his team at Island Tile try to look at each person’s individual project and get a feel for their style, taste and personality. “Most customers are shocked by the increased size of the tiles today, and typically these larger designs are the most popular now. You want to consider the size of the home and work with the layout and flow from indoor to outdoor spaces, but often you’re looking at three by three or four by four feet as the most desirable sizes for square tiles. For wood-look tiles, 56 : S PAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M

the most popular length is 48 inches, but we offer up to 96 inches in length, with eight to 10 inches in width giving the ideal proportions,” he says. “It’s really all about scale and layout.” For the past 30 years, the Island Tile team has participated in the International Coverings show, which took place this year in Orlando. During the show, Hirsch gets a good feel for the global trends in the tile industry, and he’s noticed an emerging preference for more saturated color and a variety of textures and finishes. “Colors and design choices tend to be a little splashier during a strong, prosperous economy,” Hirsch notes. “So, during the most recent recession beginning in 2009, you saw a lot of whites and grays, but over the past decade and especially recently, we’re seeing the return of more color.” When homeowners choose muted color choices or a monochromatic scheme, Hirsch sees an emerging preference for a variety of textures and finishes. “Two of the most popular choices are marble and wood-look tile, and you can really play with finishes for either of those options, from a piano gloss to a heavily weathered or hammered texture,” he explains. Larger tile sizes, custom colors and variety of textures all give customers an endless array of options. At Island Tile, creating art has always been the goal. Using new technology, homeowners will find the perfect finishes for their home.

RETHINK THE REFINISH BY HEATHER MOTRO JUNIOR ASSISTANT EDITOR

You have a dilemma: Your bathroom and kitchen look tired, dated and desperately in need of a refresh. Sure, you could take out the old units and replace them with new ones, but that renovation process will eat up your valuable time and money. Mark Shields, owner of Central Coast Refinishing, offers a simpler solution: don’t renovate, refinish. With more than 20 years of jobs well done, Central Coast Refinishing is Central Florida’s top provider of refinishing and reglazing services. Shields is no rookie to the refinishing craft. He first created Central Coast Refinishing in 1997 while living in Orange County, California. At the beginning, the company refinished surfaces for residential clients, but as they gained experience and word of their good work spread, Central Coast Refinishing started to take on commercial 58 : SPAC ECOA ST L IV IN G | S PACECOAST L I V I N G .CO M

and military projects. When Shields moved to Hawaii with his wife in 2004, he brought the company’s prime refinishing services with him. Several years later, he relocated to Florida. It was then that the vice president of operations at his former Hawaii company called and passed the company back to Shields. The rest is history. According to Shields, refinishing a surface is a more practical solution than replacing the appliance. For one thing, refinishing is a one-day process, whereas a renovation may take up to several months. Additionally, instead of using paint that can peel away or contain carcinogens, Central Coast Refinishing uses materials that are strong, durable and non-toxic. Shields assures that, all in all, refinishing a fixture will cost you 70% less than replacing it.

As if over two decades of professional refinishing experience isn’t enough, Central Coast Refinishing is proud to be a certified dealer of Kott Koatings, which are glazes specially formulated by Kott Enterprises for durability and ease of cleaning. Since it was founded in 1954, Kott Enterprises has become known across the world as the largest porcelain refinishing company. “They’re considered the original bathroom refinishers,” Shields said. “I’ve had people say, ‘Oh, are you a Kott Koatings dealer? Then we’ll talk to you.’” He notices that clients are consistently pleased when they get Kott Koatings glazes in their homes.

BEFORE

AFTER

Central Coast Refinishing uses highquality materials such as porcelain, fiberglass and cast iron to resurface bathtubs, showers, countertops and more. Resurfacing services can fix chips, cracks, discoloration, scratches, deterioration and other effects of wear. For a testament to the quality of the company’s work, look no further than its many years of success. “Our experience and the materials we use outshines the competition,” Shields says.

COMMEMORATIVE EDITION:

father's day!

THE HEROES WHO DON’T WEAR CAPES

D

octor, teacher, father. Though the first two titles are commendable and respectable, I’m sure our fathers would agree that they are no match to the title of “dad.” However, all three titles hold one commonality: all who hold them change lives. Doctors and teachers change the lives of others through a learned knowledge and special skillset, while fathers change the lives of others through those inner qualities – love, patience, compassion – learned in the field of life. I’m sure many would agree that their fathers are their heroes. From a young age, children see their dads as superheroes: men who go out into the world and serve those around them. As many of us get older, our fathers

BY ERIC WRIGHT, PUBLISHER BY SARA SANTORA, MANAGING EDITOR

still remain heroes in our eyes; however, we realize it has less to do with their careers, and more to do with the time spent providing for us, loving us and guiding us through life’s obstacles, while still helping the world around them. Fathers have many qualities and can be both driven and laid back; serious and silly. This month, we celebrate fathers in our community and the special relationships they hold with their children, and we showcase their softer sides – the side to dad many of us are familiar with. These dads may not wear fancy capes and costumes, but their children still loved dressing up just like dad, their hero. J UN E 2019 : 65

FATHERHOOD

MORE THAN A ROOF OVER YOUR HEAD BY ERIC WRIGHT PUBLISHER

Ray Smith Walter M. Shirra Sr., father of the famous Mercury, Gemini and Apollo astronaut Walter (Wally) M. Shirra Jr., once said, “You don’t raise heroes, you raise sons. And if you treat them like sons, they’ll turn out to be heroes, even if it’s just in your own eyes.” That is the power fathers have, and in many respects, especially as one matures, those fathers become heroes to their sons and daughters as well. Mothers often focus children inwardly, to establish their identity and personal equilibrium. Fathers, on the other hand, tend to point them outwardly, to meet challenges and find their place in the world. Meeting and understanding the challenges of life is something Raymond (Ray) Smith and his wife, Kristy, strive to do with their four children: Cheyanne, Gianna, Carmine and Aniella. While in his early twenties, Smith started doing roofing on the weekends, along with his primary job at Kennedy Space Center. Though the work was hard, the money was good, and soon Smith moved to second shift at KSC so that he could do roofs during the day. Fast forward over a decade later, and Smith and his wife, who is the vice president and administrative director of the company, have grown G & G Roofing into the largest commercial and residential roofing company in the county, with over $20 million in annual production.

President, G&G Roofing Construction Inc.

Their children range in age from eight to 20. Smith credits his parents for teaching him the principles of hard work. “My father insisted that I learn by doing. Working hard was the only option in our home and it shaped who I am today. The other side, though, was if I wanted to do something, whether it was riding four wheelers, hunting or playing hockey, he would find a way to not only do it, but he did it with me. We were by no means wealthy, and I was never spoiled, but somehow, they made a way. We still hunt together,” Smith said. As Smith and his wife’s business grew, they were able to buy a 500-acre farm in Illinois in the heart of white-tail deer country. Not only Smith, but his oldest daughter, his son and his wife are all avid hunters — a pastime the family enjoys together along with off-shore fishing. Like his father, Smith goes out of his way to enjoy life alongside his children. Experiencing Life Together According to Smith, exposing your children to real life experiences builds character and independence. “When I was growing up, we worked on our own cars,” he said. “Now, I have my son change the oil in my truck and, if there is a minor repair like replacing a tail light, I have him figure out how to do it. I learned by trial and error and I want my kids to learn those problemsolving skills.”

J UN E 2019 : 67

Yet, he admits the challenge of relating to kids, who prefer relating to their iPhones more than with their parents, isn’t easy. “When my kids were young and they were so adept at using a computer or cell phone, I thought it was great. ‘Wow,’ I said, ‘They are so much smarter than I was.’ Now, I’m not so sure how great it is.” He also realizes his family’s standard of living is a lot higher than when he was a child. “Growing up, I always understood the value of a dollar and I looked

for opportunities to make money. I used to dive for golf balls at a local course and sell them for five dollars a dozen at the restaurant where my Mom worked. I want my children to have that same sense of value,” he said. Smith and his wife are both immersed in their business. In fact, when asked, “What is your biggest challenge in business?” he candidly replied: “I love what I do, I’m passionate about it, so I don’t really look at it as a challenge.” Nevertheless, it is just as apparent that their

greatest joy and their greatest achievement is their four children. As his wife, Kristy, said about him, “Ray is a great father and a great example, who provides and works hard for his family. He takes the time to teach the kids to hunt and fish, always doing special things for them and finding the time to attend all their functions. For all he does to make us happy, we love him.

Ben Plechaty School Teacher at Manatee Elementary

Ben Plechaty, a fifth grade teacher, his wife, who teaches second grade, and his two sons, who are nine and five, are together at Manatee Elementary. “It is really great being there, watching your kids every day,” he commented. He started college planning to be an engineer, but things changed for Plechaty. “I was coaching a rec soccer team, and I looked forward to the games and practices every day, but I never got excited about my engineering classes.” That realization, along with the support of his parents, caused him to switch to education; he recognized what he enjoyed and what brought fulfillment was working with young people. He settled on fifth grade because, “It is an interesting age. They are intelligent, independent and old enough to have great interaction with you, but they are young enough to think you have some useful ideas, too.” Though his parents separated early, he maintained a very positive relationship with his father and his stepfather. “My parents taught me that if an activity isn’t good for the kids, it probably isn’t good for the adults. That is the approach my wife and I have taken with our kids, and it has worked pretty well — a sort of family-first philosophy,” he said. “Kids force you to be less egocentric and to manage your time well,” he said. As a teacher and coach, he is occasionally approached for parenting advice. “I remember someone asked me for counsel and I had just read a text from my son’s kindergarten teacher, because he had slugged another student. ‘Who am I?’ I thought, but I remember someone once told me when I was a new parent that ‘The days are long, but the years are short.’ I’ve never forgotten that.”

Dr. Anil Dhople A Leading Radiation Oncologist

Dr. Anil Dhople is a leading radiation oncologist who grew up in Satellite Beach. His parents immigrated to this country from India for the hope of a better start for their children’s lives, a better education and better opportunities for Anil and his sister. His father, Arvind Dhople Ph.D., is a celebrated expert on infectious diseases and aging, a professor emeritus at Florida Tech. “It is difficult to fathom the sacrifices my parents made when they left the comfort and security of their families and home in India,” Dr. Dhople said. “My father instilled in us, at a young age, that success in anything requires hard work and dedication. Success, he would say, ‘is nothing more than giving 100%.’ I try to instill that same message in my children.” Dr. Dhople visited India for the first time with his children this past year and observed, “I think they have a better appreciation and understanding of that message now.” Dr. Dhople freely admits, “before children, I used to worry or stress about small things in life, things that I had no control over. With children, those stresses have actually become less bothersome because my kids help me be a kid again, and I'm seeing the world through their eyes.” Though he also says, “I have definitely become more efficient with time management, because my goal is to get home, have dinner every night with them, and be part of their lives as much as possible. “Both my daughters still love getting hugs from me and aren't embarrassed by my affection. I hope they never grow out of that.”

Dr. Rafael Trespalacios Medical Director and Lead Surgeon at Brevard Eye Center

Some call it, “Entering another person’s world.” It is one of the key differentiators between fathers who have vital connections with their children and those who do not. We expect children to enter their parents’ world — the one they are born into. However, it takes consistent effort to enter into the world that is forming around your children, and it is something Dr. Rafael Trespalacios (Dr. Tres) goes to great lengths to do with his children. “I spend my professional life restoring sight to the blind,” Dr. Tres shared, “but let me tell you, nothing opens your eyes to your own blind spots like a head on collision with fatherhood.” Adding, “You hurt when they hurt, and you rejoice when you see them filled with joy. I want to have an intimate relationship with my children. They will always be my children, but that doesn’t mean that I know them … that takes work.” His children, Christian Alexander, who is nine, and Madeline Grace, ten, are obviously the joys of his life. “Christian is always thinking of others, especially his sister,” he said. “He even considers her when she is not around. It is just because he wants to. It is beautiful. Madeline amazes me when she stands up for what she believes in. When you challenge her, she wrestles with the opposing view until it helps crystallize her position further.” Dr. Tres feels his job as a father is to make his children competent participants in community, without exasperating them, which he describes as an “ever elusive balance.” “You are going to try, and you are going to fail. I know it sounds bleak, but I have realized that the goal is not about ever achieving that balance, because it is always just out of reach … the goal is the actual striving for it.”

Dr. Victor Benezra Obstetrics and Gynecology

Like so many in our culture, Dr. Victor Benezra’s parents separated when he was very young. But, he said, “I was lucky to have my grandfather and uncle step up and teach me the importance of family values, a strong work ethic and setting goals. They had both emigrated to the U.S. from Cuba and were determined to make our lives more secure and comfortable.” For him, becoming a father has brought fulfillment in more ways than he could ever have imagined. “My life feels complete when we are all together, enjoying a family dinner. I try not to sweat the small stuff and am grateful for every moment.” In fact, his advice to other parents is “to relish every moment and learn to be present both mentally and physically. They grow up quickly!” His son Robby is 17 and his daughters Rachel and Rebecca are ages 15 and 13. The obvious pleasure he takes in his children, along with the appreciation he has for each of their unique qualities is uncontainable. “I enjoy my children immensely,” he said. “They are loyal to and protective of each other. They are not perfect, but they are my pride and joy! “I have to admit, throughout the years,” he shared, “I have worked an exorbitant number of hours in the office and the operating room. For almost 20 years, I have been dedicated to a profession I truly love. However, I have done my best to recognize the importance of family time. As such, we frequently take long weekends and family vacations. Our family time together is always memorable and special, making these moments truly last forever.” Then he quipped, “And if they ever forget, I typically remind them with the 100,000 pictures and videos!”

GIVING BACK HEALTH FIRST INITIATIVES IMPROVE THE WELLNESS AND HEALTH OF BREVARD [ By Eric Wright, Publisher ]

The numbers are quite staggering. Though Health First is known in the area for its world-class hospitals and clinicians, fitness and rehabilitation centers and various medical clinics, few know how much the health care and insurance provider invests back in community support. It totaled over $171 million in fiscal year 2018, which includes charity and uncompensated care. When it comes to ensuring health care is accessible to all of Brevard’s residents, the life-saving and lifechanging impact of Health First is far more about deeds than words.

Careful Aim to Ensure Measurable Outcomes With the same thoughtful preparation and foresight that goes into medical treatment, Health First, a Brevardbased not-for-profit organization, does an in-depth Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) in collaboration with the Space Coast Health Foundation. The CHNA provides a comprehensive analysis of widely-accepted health indicators that identify health disparities for each demographic area served by their respective facilities. This data serves as the foundation for developing implementation strategies that often include partnerships with community organizations in creating initiatives to address health needs. Michael Seeley, the president of the Health First Foundation, also oversees the Community Benefit department of Health First. He spoke of his initial foray into the world of healthcare administration in California and how agonizing it was dealing with families who were having to make care decisions based on the ability to pay. “Because of what I saw, we grew our own non-profit

for our 50+ provider practice,” he said. “My fondest memories of that time in my career was what we were able to do for those disadvantaged individuals and families to get the care and services they needed. Years later, when this position opened, it was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. To be around a thoughtfully structured approach to address critical needs and shortfalls is so rewarding.” Investments in community support programs like Who We Play For. This remarkable program began back in 2007 on the goal line of a Cocoa Beach High School soccer field, when 15-year-old student athlete Rafe Maccarone went into sudden cardiac arrest, following a warmup routine before the beginning of practice. The community was shocked when this young man, who passed all his sports physicals, died the next day from heart disease, stricken while playing the sport he loved most. Recognizing the condition was detectable with screening electrocardiograms (EKG), Who We Play For was launched. Health First has been a partner with Who We Play For since 2016,

COVER STORY screening more than 2,000 students in Brevard County. During that first year, a 17-year-old cheerleader from a local high school suffered and survived sudden cardiac arrest while training for cheer tryouts. The student and her family became champions of the cause to create awareness about sudden cardiac arrest. About a year later, at her high school, her best friend was screened. The EKG revealed a potentially lifethreatening heart condition and she was successfully treated. A few months later, three members of the student’s family were identified with the same, hereditary heart condition.

One of the most impactful programs that Health First partners with is the Brevard Health Alliance (BHA), which is Brevard County’s only Federally Qualified Health Center. Since March of 2005, BHA has provided extensive primary health care services to residents regardless of their ability to pay. By offering services on a sliding-fee scale, BHA services include pediatrics, behavioral health, dental services, diagnostic services, resource management services, medication assistance and specialty referrals to Brevard County’s economically disadvantaged residents.

S PAC E C OAST BUS INES S .CO M

BHA operates seven fixed clinics in Palm Bay, Malabar, Port St. John, Rockledge, Melbourne and Titusville, along with their principal clinic on Sarno Road in Melbourne. BHA also operates Mobile Health Units to provide professional medical and dental care to Brevard’s residents “where they are” – on the streets, in shelters, at soup kitchens and at drop-in centers. According to their website, “We currently provide services to approximately 2,500 Brevard County citizens that present as homeless.”

Top Priorities The Community Health Needs Assessment, (which is available on Health First’s website) identifies the priority areas that Health First will address and the strategies they will use. “The most successful Community Benefit programs around the country identify areas where a tangible difference can be made, and we identified two,” Seeley said. “The first, was access to health care, when it is needed, where it is needed, regardless of the ability to pay. The second was overweight/ obesity, poor nutrition and/or lack of

physical activity and its relationship to chronic diseases, especially at the pediatric level.” The second area of focus has led to a partnership with the Brevard Public Schools, to enhance their physical education programs for middle schools with the purchase of new gym equipment. Health First has also partnered with the United Way of Brevard in supporting the Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge for the past three years. This communitywide initiative encourages mayors of Brevard County’s municipalities to get their residents moving and adopt

a healthier lifestyle. This year, there were 2,445 participants and eleven municipalities participating with the City of Cocoa Beach receiving the award for “Most Fit City.” In addition, a Great Weight-off competition for adults was held to recognize the male and female participant losing the largest percentage of their body weight during the competition. The female winner from Palm Bay announced that the Challenge inspired her to start eating more sensibly, resulting in losing 41.8 pounds or 16% of her body weight in just 8 weeks. She JUNE 2019

stated that she is about halfway to her goal and winning this competition has given her an added incentive. To help develop healthy lifestyles a m on g o u r m o s t v ul n e r a b l e communities, Health First supports the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida and The Children’s Hunger Project. disadvantaged neighborhoods, at no or little cost to their families. “At Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, we believe that every child, regardless of income or life circumstance, should be empowered to excel in school, become good citizens and lead healthy, productive lives,” their website states. Childhood hunger leads to a weaker immune system, difficulty in learning and paying attention in class, along with being able to

behave properly to retain what they learn. In addition, hungry kids are sick more often and have lower academic achievement. In Brevard over 50 percent of students qualify for a reduced-price meal program, and Brevard Public Schools works valiantly to provide both a healthy breakfast and lunch for those who need it. The Children’s Hunger Project is a Brevard-based program that works to see students through the weekend, by providing weekend

meals that students can take home in backpacks. Through Health First’s giving back initiatives and partnerships, these programs and the services are able to impact families and individuals across the county, every day. It helps to level the field in terms of access to essential medical services and not only provides care to the sick, it helps to improve the wellness and health of everyone in Brevard.

Life Care Center of Palm Bay Premier Long-Term Care Facilities [ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ] Headquartered out of Cleveland, Tennessee, the Life Care Centers of America operates more than 200 skilled nursing, rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s and senior living campuses in 28 states. In our area, the campus is located near the heart of Palm Bay, between Palm Bay Hospital and the offices of Brevard County’s largest physician group — an ideal location for their rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities. The Palm Bay location was constructed in 2004 with the community’s future growth in mind. The expanding population foreshadowed the continuing need for senior care services. The Life Care Center of Palm Bay is able to fulfill those needs with its premier services. Life Care Center of Palm Bay focuses on inpatient and

outpatient rehabilitation with 24-hour skilled nursing care and state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment. A highly skilled nursing staff offers a higher acuity of care that aging patients require. Will Tarbet, the executive director of the Palm Bay location, has noticed that the needs of their patients have evolved. “The acuteness and complexities of the patients we serve in this kind of environment evolved because the hospitals are trying to get patients discharged sooner,” says Tarbet. “That acuity trickles down throughout the post-acute field to all these facilities.” The expedited process has caused an increase in the need for additional, specialized care, as well as the readmission of patients; Tarbet and the Life Care staff see the need to help members of the community facing these issues.

S PAC E C OAST BUS INES S .CO M

The Palm Bay location specializes in the treatment of patients that were hospitalized and need postacute rehabilitation and physical, occupational and speech therapy. “We are a post-acute nursing and rehabilitation provider,” says Tarbet. The center also provides a higher acuity level of care for a multitude of diagnoses with a focus on orthopedic, neurological, cardiac and pulmonary services, all received in a safe environment designed to offer independence and security. In partnership with Health First, Tarbet said the focus is on reduction of patient readmissions to the hospital. Tarbet and the Life Care team work with the community to provide numerous volunteer and partnership efforts. They participated in a water collection drive on World Kindness Day this past year. “In support of World Kindness Day, Life Care Center of Palm Bay selected The Daily Bread, a local non-profit supporting the homeless of Brevard County,” Tarbet said. “This is a great organization that does amazing work locally and this donation will be put to good use. We are extremely proud of our associates who collected 187 cases and 13 gallons, which was the equivalent of 77,511 ounces of water.” The center also actively participates and partners with civic organizations that organize health fairs and health testing in local communities. In addition, the center supports local school activities and youth sports.

Nationwide Medical Licensing Licensing Thousands of Medical Professionals Every Year [ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ] The licensing of medical professionals is essential to ensure your care providers are up to date and qualified to practice in their discipline. The licensing process is often a lengthy and tedious process to undertake. It requires providers to take time away from patients to certify and recertify. This is where Nationwide Medical Licensing comes in to help. Nationwide Medical Licensing specializes in assisting with the administration of medical licensing applications and credentialing procedures. Established in 2007, Nationwide Medical Licensing provides their services all over the country, including a location here in Melbourne, Florida. Nationwide Medical Licensing is an “A+” rated member of the Better

Business Bureau. Nationwide Medical Licensing operates in all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. Their services allow for a professional to relocate and quickly obtain their licenses for practice anywhere in the country. They take the stress out of the licensure process by doing 99% of the administrative work for you, greatly reducing the time it takes to receive your license in any given state. Nationwide Medical Licensing assists in licensing thousands of medical professionals every year, including the fields of MD, DO, PA, DDS, RN, NP, CRNA, LPN, DA, telemedicine and telenursing licensing. They are dedicated to providing a level of unbeatable excellence to the healthcare professionals they assist. Tierra Williams, Chief Operating Officer for the Melbourne Location wants to expand their scope and let health care professionals know that Nationwide Medical Licensing is here to help. “We are trying to get out into the community more to show our presence,” says Williams. In addition to how helpful these services are, Nationwide Medical Licensing also prides themselves on offering exceptional services for a much lower cost than most other medical licensing companies. Plus,

their licensing services are tax deductible. Williams has noticed a large trend of younger professionals applying for licenses. More nurses and doctors are in their younger 30’s due to greater educational opportunities around the country producing more graduates. This is why Nationwide Medical Licensing’s services are so influential. Williams described that many of professionals don’t have the time to undertake the application process. They are tied up with long hours, school, and families. Nationwide Medical Licensing sees the need among this segment of professionals for reliable experts. “We are doing the administrative work and helping to facilitate the processing of the

license applications for those who don’t have the time,” says Williams. The Melbourne Nationwide Medical Licensing location is working to connect with more local Brevard professionals who need their services. Nationwide Medical Licensing is often out in the community volunteering and sponsoring different organizations. They encourage their team to volunteer at least four times a year, with management personnel participating in monthly actions in the community. Nationwide Medical Licensing recently sponsored the Doctors’ Goodwill Foundation, which helps improve the health care system by offering education for both professionals and the general public. Nationwide Medical Licensing also works with different institutions like Keiser University to partner with their medical programs and offer their services. Their contributions in the community truly display their investment in Brevard. For more information, visit nationwidemedicallicensing.com or call 321-622-9030. Parrish Healthcare Center Port Canaveral

A One-Stop Solution for the Live, Work and Play Community [ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ] The Parrish Healthcare Center at Port Canaveral provides a primary care/walk-in clinic, as well as occupational medicine services, workers’ compensation care, diagnostics, physical therapy, industrial rehabilitation and sleep disorder services. The healthcare center is located at 390 Challenger Road, opposite Cruise Terminal No. 1. The opening of the healthcare center in the summer of 2017 was the answer to repeated requests from area businesses and community members. The center provides Brevard residents and visitors convenient access to superior health services. The availability of health care services from this on-port location is important for the seafaring community, too. Cruise ship guests, crew members and shore-side support staff, who are in close proximity to cruise and cargo operations, now have easy access to health care that was not before available in the immediate area. The occupational health programs are led by board-certified physicians and offer comprehensive, tailored programs designed to help organizations foster a healing work environment that results in multiple benefits to employers, including: • Reducing health care costs • Minimizing workers' compensation expenses 28 : SPAC E C OAST B US I N E SS

• Increasing workplace safety • Lowering risks for workplace injury • Returning employees to work sooner • Compliance with state and federal health and safety regulations In addition to the Port Canaveral location, Parrish Healthcare centers have a growing network with locations in Titusville and Port St. John. These healthcare centers bring together physicians and other providers with diagnostic services, immediate/urgent care services, occupational health services and other outpatient services to provide a one-stop solution for the people who live, work and play in these communities. Parrish has a 60-year history serving Brevard. Through the ebbs and flows of both the county’s evolution, as well as the national health care system’s evolution and transformation, Parrish has proven its resolve to its mission, vision and values. In 2016, with the announcement of Parrish Medical Center becoming the first nationally integrated care-certified health care organization by The Joint Commission, Parrish Healthcare was introduced. TITUSVILLE

SANA VIVO

ALTERNATIVE HEALTHY VENDING OPTIONS

[ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ]

Based out of Titusville, Lorelei and Allan Sprayberry were upset with the diet and eating habits of local children and adults. “I saw how poorly our children eat and what it was doing to their health,” said Lorelei. “We established this company to help pass on better eating habits to not only children, but to adults as well.”

Sprayberrys get mobile report updates when items get vended or issues come up. This makes restocking and maintenance much easier to handle and much more efficient. The machines take cash, credit card, atm card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and just about every major provider.

As a former school teacher under the disciplines of health and physical education, Lorelei taught at Titusville High School for 18 years before retiring this past September to tackle the problem head on. Her husband, Allan, became her partner in the creation and operation of a new company. Allan, a school teacher as well, is currently involved part-time, but plans to join his wife full time upon his retirement from the education system. Their new company, Sana Vivo, provides healthy vending snacks and beverages to businesses, government offices, schools and large companies as a healthy alternative to the traditional snack machine. “People are generally becoming more health conscious,” says Lorelei. As they actively look for healthier snack and drink options in the workplace, Sana Vivo is able to provide employees and customers with the healthy and delicious snacks, drinks and meals that they crave.

“We have something for everybody, and we are really proud of what we do!” Both snack and beverage based, the offerings in a Sana Vivo vending machine include Veggie Straws, Skinny Pop, Chex Mix, a healthier version of beef jerky, Goldfish, protein cookies, fruit snacks, Kind Bars, Cliff Bars, Luna Bars and much more. Their beverages include water, protein drinks, Propel Fitness Water, Bai, and low calorie G2. The available offerings also include items that are GMO free, kosher, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and low-fat. Vending options can also be customized by partners that reserve machines with the company. This healthy alternative for schools and businesses also works to help lower rising healthcare costs and promote a healthier, more productive environment. With snacks and beverages located in one frame, the machines are set up as a dual machine. This makes them very compact and economical to operate. With a footprint similar to that of a small refrigerator, the compact size can still hold over 300 items. These hightech machines also make service much easier. The 30 : SPAC E COAST B U S I N E SS

“We’re really excited about it. We love the products that we sell, and we stand by them. We put our heart and soul into it and do everything we can to make the client happy.” The Sprayberrys are looking to focus on the space industry as they continue to expand in the area. Stemming from their years as educators, they are focused on the school systems to foster better eating habits among children,. They are currently looking to enter Volusia County Schools and then move to Brevard County Schools once Allan retires. “Being a former school teacher, the education system is of high interest to me,” says Lorelei. The Sprayberrys also attend many of the events hosted by the Titusville Chamber. They feel that it helps grow their connection to the community. In addition to a focus in improving the health of individuals, they are also dedicated to helping by volunteering with local organizations. On one occasion, they packed bagged lunch meals for needy children that don’t have meals on the weekends. Through their various efforts, this proactive couple wants to “spread the wealth” of health.
