October is our Breast Cancer Survivor issue, and the one we’re most proud to assemble each year. The stories we print in October are uplifting and inspiring. We are often at our best when life takes a sudden turn for the unexpected. In talking to Sherry Palmer at Driven by Heart (previously Breast Friends) for another article, I found one woman’s experience worth sharing.

This is Sarah May’s journey, as told by her.

“In February 2015, my life changed forever. I was 35 years old, happily married with a wonderful two-yearold daughter, and life was very good. Then my husband discovered a large lump in my left breast. My OB/GYN checked it out and, after some testing, it turned out that I had a different type of cancer in each breast. I was shocked, terrified and devastated. Because I had no known family history (my father was raised by his aunt and his family history was unknown, and my mother was adopted), I underwent genetic testing and found out that I was positive for a genetic mutation (BRCA2). Not only did I have to deal with breast cancer, but also with the idea that for the rest of my life I would be on high alert for developing other types of cancer. I picked myself up and powered on through my treatment plan, and on my daughter’s second birthday, I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction. I felt that my surgery was my very special gift to her, hoping it would mean that I would be around for a very long time. After 16 rounds of chemotherapy over a period of five months and many surgeries, I am now healthy and thriving, living my ‘new’ normal. In May 2017, I also opted to have a prophylactic hysterectomy and oophorectomy, a difficult decision because it meant that I would not be able to give birth to another child, but I chose to have the surgery to greatly reduce my risk of developing ovarian cancer.

“I’m now an outspoken advocate for genetic testing. Knowledge is empowerment; the identification of a genetic mutation can allow women to manage their risk for cancer. It can open so many doors for insurance coverage, allowing for surveillance and preventative screening for related cancers.

“It was uplifting to witness the many ways that people reached out to support my family, from cooking a meal, to taking me to doctor appointments, to caring for our daughter. I will always appreciate the support and kindness my family received during that time, and it is my hope that my story will touch someone and that they are encouraged to start a dialogue with their doctor about medical testing.”

trap on your lederhosen and get ready for some schnitzel, it’s that time of year again – Oktoberfest! Each year more than six million people from around the world attend this annual funfair in Munich, Germany. Roughly seven million liters of beer are served during the 16day celebration, while visitors enjoy a wide variety of traditional German delicacies. While Oktoberfest’s roots date back to royalty and horse races, today the focus is on authentic German food and the fermented, malty and bubbly beverage those around the world revere so fondly, beer!

For those of you that do not want to make the almost 5,000-mile trip to join in the festivities, we have found a variety of options to enjoy a Space Coast Oktoberfest. Take a look at some local establishments that will be hosting an Oktoberfest event or brewing a special seasonal beer to kick back and enjoy with friends.

ohn Cleese, legendary comedian and writer, will visit The King Center in Melbourne November 5. After a showing of his iconic film, “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” he will take the stage to discuss the film along with other fanciful topics. SpaceCoast LIVING was lucky enough to have a few minutes of his time recently to talk about his upcoming show and, as you’ll read, many other topics. Tanya Mutton, our Art Director sat in to “translate,” as she called it, because she’s from Britain too.

Steve: Good morning!

Tanya: How are you, sir?

John Cleese: Good morning. Hello, Steven and Tanya. I’m very old, or it may be that I’m very tired. I’m not sure. They feel the same.

Steve: First -- and I have to add this -- Tanya is from Britain as well. That’s why she’s here. She’s offered to translate for me.

John Cleese: Excellent. If I talk about vests, you’ll know what I’m talking about. And pants.

awfully long time ago, maybe 40 years ago. He played lots and lots of parts, including the blind man who claimed there had been a miracle and he could now see. He threw his stick away and fell into a huge pit.

Tanya: A

lot of people think that you’ve just done Monty Python and Fawlty Towers. I was quite surprised to read that you have worked nonstop. You’ve done so much work -- radio, television, movies. I was curious, is there anything on your wish list that you haven’t done yet? That you would really like to get your teeth into?

Tanya: Yes, I know what vests are. And I keep trying to teach John Cleese: Yes, when my finances are restored, because them the many ways to use the word pants, like, that story is pants. But they’re like, “Pants, aren’t those trousers?” I’m like, “Well, yeah, but they’re also… something can be pants.”

John Cleese: Yes, it’s funny that there are so many words in our languages that differ when it comes to clothes. We keep our trousers up sometimes with braces! Not braces there, right?

Tanya: No, we call them braces. They call them suspenders.

Steve: I like braces better though.

John Cleese: I was just seeing if you were listening.

Steve: When you come to the States for these tours, do you have to adjust your humor? Do you find that the audiences differ from Britain to here?

John Cleese:

Very little. If people don’t like me, or if they just find what I’m talking about incomprehensible, then they don’t buy tickets. The lovely thing about these audiences are they like what I do, or else they wouldn’t be in the theater. They’re much more aware of the vocabulary that I would use than, say, if I were entertaining farm workers in Alabama. Probably.

obviously having to pay $20 billion to my ex-wife has put a big hole in my finances. You don’t make the money in English television that you do in American television. People, I think, probably thought that $20 billion was more like a flea bite to me, when it was more like a crocodile bite. Once I’ve got my finances restored, I would love to make a documentary about what religion would be if the organized churches hadn’t gotten their hands on it.

I would love to do some programs about life after death because I believe something does go on after we die. I know that’s regarded as insane, but I believe we understand far less about the world than some people think we do. I know one very distinguished physicist who thinks that it’s possible that something does go on after death. I would love to put that out there because I think it is encouraging to think that this is only part of a big deal and not the only thing.

Steve: One

last thing: you have four dates in Florida in November, in winter. Is that a plan and would you come back next winter and do “Life of Brian” for us?

John Cleese: Sure as hell, I’m not going to be up in New

England! I’d love to do “Life of Brian.” It’s a better film than “Holy Grail.” Most Americans don’t agree with me on that -the English do.

Steve: Which I notice, wasn’t on your tour schedule.

John Cleese: Yes. It was canceled due to lack of interest. Tanya: Thank you so much for taking the time with us. John Cleese: A very interesting question. I’ve never really

noticed it. In America, I’m better known for Monty Python than Fawlty Towers. Whereas, in England, I’m better known for Fawlty Towers. There are differences, but they don’t seem to be apparent in the audience. But there are people who know me, for example, from reading my autobiography. They have a completely different idea of me from people who know me from Fawlty Towers. There’s a lot people that think, if I’m doing Fawlty Towers, I must be like my character Basil, you know. Sometimes I have to explain to them that I have been caught acting on occasion.

Steve: I recently read about your new show on the BBC. You must be really excited about that.

John Cleese:

I’ve been working on it over the last few weeks. I think people who think that I’m like Basil Fawlty will be astonished. Absolutely, at the other end of the spectrum.

here has been a growing trend in our neighborhoods.

Holiday lighting has taken a turn toward the amazing.

Drive down a street at dusk any time in October, and you’ll see the beginnings of this year’s holiday lighting season.

To be sure, we’re not just talking about the red, green and blue lights associated with traditional Christmas lighting, but often oranges and purples for Halloween and Thanksgiving displays. But besides starting earlier, and for more holidays, the lights themselves have seen a resurgence with the application of technology. What were once fragile glass bulbs in strings, tangled in a ball in your garage, are now the latest in L.E.D. technology, more durable, and much more energy efficient.

You will no longer have to hunt for that one bulb that keeps the entire string from working. Can we get a Hallelujah on that?

Eating Out Made Healthy START TODAY!

t's that time of year again.

Delicious temptations of holidays feasts and treats are being thrown at us from every angle: family, friends, work parties, holiday parties, Halloween, Thanksgiving... The holidays! If it's not a feast at home or work to celebrate all the great things that go on this time of year, then it's a feast out. So instead of setting our sights three months from now on a New Year’s resolution to start a new diet or exercise regime that we all know we'll fail, why not start today?

Since we can control what we eat at home (for the most part), let's focus on the things we can do when eating out this season to stay healthy.

Nutritionist Angela Gallagher says that the first thing to focus on is fresh ingredients and portions, "Inherently healthy cuisines have a foundation of primarily fresh and local ingredients, seasoned with herbs, naturally occurring fats, and are consumed with a mindset of savoring the flavor and meal. Also, think 'Dim Sum'; small bite-sized samplings of delicious ingredients, mindful eating and learning to enjoy each bite in a slower dining environment can lead to a lasting, healthy eating lifestyle for anyone looking to make health changes."

To help take on the 'Healthy Eating Out Challenge,' Gallagher has compiled five simple steps to follow when friends and family say, 'Let's go out to celebrate!'

PICK your

CHIPS Protein

A well-balanced and satisfying meal includes some source of protein (animal or plant based), fiber (think plants) and healthy fats like olive oil, nuts, seeds, avocados or other higher fat fruits/veggies (yes, even coconut). An example of this is a spinach salad with chicken, feta cheese, sunflower seeds and a drizzle of balsamic vinaigrette made with extra virgin olive oil. You can substitute any dried bean or pea of choice if cutting out the animal protein from cheese.

Avoid calorie dense, vitamin deficient additions like tortilla chips, crackers, croutons or even bread and rolls. If opting for a carbohydrate controlled meal, avoid filling up on simple carbohydrates. Consider choosing a second serving of veggies or add an ounce of nuts or seeds as a substitute for the crunch that would have been in the chip.

A perfect example: order a burrito bowl with pinto beans and any vegetable of choice, diced cucumber, fresh cilantro, salsa and guacamole. Go light on the rice (or leave out) and skip the chip to save yourself hundreds of calories.

Look for menu items with fresh ingredients and a rainbow of colors.

Mixed greens, fresh vegetables and fruits, locally caught fish, in-season and locally grown produce are all excellent choices to satisfy hunger and fuel your body with solid nutrition. Pre-made food items at restaurants can be full of salt and swimming in extra calories and may leave you feeling too full.

MEDITERRANEAN meals

This heart-healthy eating style is inherently nutrient balanced and satisfying. Mediterranean cuisine focuses on plenty of fish, plant-based foods like fruits, veggies, whole grains and healthy fats (like olive oil instead of butter or higher fat red meats).

Other inherently healthier cuisines include well-chosen and authentic: Spanish, Indian, Mexican, Japanese and Vietnamese meals. Avoid the 'Americanized' versions which are heavy in refined ingredients, salt, and larger portions covered with cheese or sauce (unless you’ve been advised to increase intake of fat with specific eating patterns).

Many restaurants now offer free apps that include nutritional breakdowns of food items at your fingertips. Check out the calories, protein, carbohydrates and fiber in the item you’re selecting and ask yourself if the food you’re considering will give your body what it needs (nutrition) and satisfy your hunger. Once your meal arrives use the 80% rule, eat and take 20% home There is no one rule of thumb when it comes to eating healthy when eating out. The keys are to know your own nutritional needs, follow a few simple guidelines, have self-control, and have fun with your family and friends this season.

here aren’t many sports that openly embrace women of any age, size or fitness level. Roller Derby – around since the 1930’s – is one of the few. And oddly enough, roller derby is perhaps one of the most physical sports in play today.

track. And perhaps one of the most unique and memorable elements of this sport is the attire… it’s definitely the only sport where you’re likely to spot fishnets, severe face makeup and booty shorts racing around the track during a game.

You may be surprised to know that here on Florida’s Space For those of you that aren’t familiar with roller derby, it’s a Coast, the Molly Roger Rollergirls have been practicing and contact sport, played by two teams of five members roller- “bouting” for the past decade. Today, the team is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA), skating in the same direction around a track. The game play consists of a series of short “jams” where the “jammer” and part of the international rankings for the sport. for each team (think quarterback) scores points by lapping The Molly Roger Rollergirls consists of members from ages members of the opposing team. This is no regular sport by 23 to 47 who have very normal “day jobs” – nurses, teachers, any stretch of the imagination. Roller derby players have entrepreneurs, retired military vets, massage therapists… their own “derby names” – a nickname used by each skater there’s no “standard” type of derby girl… we are all that typically reflects their personality – both on and off the extremely unique.

In the 1960’s and 70’s, roller derby was a bit of a theatrical sport – think WWE wrestling – where teams would race around a banked track and trip, punch and otherwise manhandle each other to gain advantage on the track. Dramatic falls, hair pulling, and plenty of fistfights were part of the “show,” which used to take place at Madison Square Garden in front of audiences of tens of thousands!

Today’s roller derby is a bit different. Real athleticism has been brought back into the sport, and – while all ages and ability levels are welcome – you will definitely increase your fitness, strength and flexibility levels by participating. Today’s derby has plenty of rules.

There are no more “free for alls” on the track… players have – as with any regulated sport – a series of rules for game play that are meant to keep participants safe so they can pursue long derby careers.

What’s perhaps the most unique thing about derby is the sense of camaraderie and community it creates. I’ve never witnessed a more connected, supportive group of people than those in derby. Derby has its own culture – and excludes no one.

Today, the rollergirls need our community’s help. The team needs more players and more fans!

“I think one of the reasons we don’t have more local women coming to practices and learning more about roller derby is because there is a fear of what the game actually entails,” said captain of the team Allyssa Stanley (a.k.a. “Weeble”). “Memories of the old-school knockdown, drag-out televised bouts may have women scared to try it out. But the truth is, it is a very safe, regulated, and super fun sport that all women should try. I can’t imagine a more empowering outlet for local women than derby.”

Stanley added, “I would strongly encourage any woman who wants to make new friends, get in better shape and experience a fun and exciting outlet to come by one of our practices and see what it’s all about!” ◆

Women throughout the county are welcome to participate in open practices on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 8-10 at Galaxy Skateway on Aurora in Melbourne. Health First Cancer Institute Patient Celebrates End of Her Chemo by Ringing Bell, a Symbolic Goal and Gesture for Those Fighting Cancer

ulie Osborne approached the metal bell anchored to the wall and jokingly asked if a rendition of the 1979 disco track, “Ring My Bell” was in order.

With her husband, Bob, and care team eagerly grinning, she dabbed the corners of her eyes with a tissue before grasping the thickly braided ivory rope. The first yank didn’t deliver any clangs, just laughs. But on Osborne’s second try, a metal echo pierced the air, followed by applause.

“I made it through chemo!” exclaimed Osborne, pumping her fist, minutes after finishing her final aggressive chemotherapy for Stage II breast cancer. “Good luck everybody – you will, too.”

The small bell, anchored on the wall at the second-floor nurses’ station, is easy to miss. But its symbolism isn’t.

For those at the Health First Cancer Institute in Titusville – and other cancer patients completing treatment – it signifies hope and healing.

“You graduated,” Jeanette Cullen, Osborne’s shopping buddy, whispered alongside husband Bob and Osborne’s care team.

A Top Team While a lumpectomy and other treatments still await to help prevent a recurrence of the disease, the most grueling of chemo appeared to be behind Osborne that stifling hot August day. “I can rest and relax and lay out by the pool and pretend I’m a goddess,” she said. Osborne wasn’t alone in the juxtaposition of emotions. Battling cancer isn’t a solo fight – it’s something an entire team of healthcare providers are vested in, both physically and emotionally.

“They’re really great, great compassionate people,” said Osborne, under the care of Health First Medical Group Hematology/Medical Oncologist Dr. Asish Dalal.

“Whether it be breast cancer or a brain tumor, I think you’ve really got to have a special skill set in order to handle that.” Kim Rowley, Health First Medical Group Chemo Infusion RN, said seeing her “model patient” ring the end-of-chemo bell was a must. “It’s awesome, watching them do that,” Rowley said. “It makes it worth it.”►►

Victory over Cancer According to the nonprofit organization breastcancer.org, one in eight U.S. women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. It’s the second-highest rate of cancer deaths in women, behind lung cancer. It was during a March shopping excursion Osborne discovered the thick, nickel-sized lump while trying on a blouse. The next day, she saw her doctor, who ordered a series of tests.

Soon, she had a diagnosis – Stage II breast cancer. She immediately thought of her daughter. Mandi, now 41, had already lost her father and then her stepfather to cancer.

“My first thought was, ‘She is not going to have another parent die of cancer,’” Osborne said. “I told her, ‘Eventually, I’m going to die of old age or something like that. But it’s not going to be of cancer.’ ” 40 : spac ec oa st l iv in g

Showing Strength and Support

Since Osborne’s cancer is HER2positive, aggressive therapy was prescribed. (According to breastcancer. org, this strain tends to grow faster and is more likely to spread and recur.)

The four-drug chemo cocktail was tapped to shrink the tumor prior to a lumpectomy scheduled for September.

“It’s an all-day process,” Osborne said of treatment, done every three weeks.

Radiation and more chemo – a single drug this time – will follow for a bit as proactive measures. Her husband, Bob, 73, a retired director of engineering from the space shuttle era, has remained a constant source of support.

“There’s been so much research and stuff on breast cancer, I felt pretty confident it was something we could conquer,” said Osborne’s husband, donning a pink golf

shirt. “We felt like this was something we could deal with and handle.” As for losing her hair? Osborne had no qualms.

“I was really cool with it,” she said of her buzz cut. “I thought, ‘I look like GI Jane.’”

While her husband has told her that her pretty, nicely shaped head need not be covered, she’s become a fan of scarves.

While the couple have remained upbeat, treatment has shifted everyday life.

Riding on their Harley Davidson trike is a rarity now. “It’s pretty debilitating for about a week,” she said of chemo. “It’s like the worst flu you ever had.”

Osborne, who worked as a project manager for an outsourcing and consulting firm, retired in 2013 – the year she and her husband married.

Travel became a monthly excursion – until cancer. Her husband accompanied

her the mornings of chemo; Jeanette Cullen, the afternoons. “The first day, I was a little taken aback, just seeing her hooked up” to medical equipment, Cullen said during the last session, on August 1. “But after that, we just chitchat, and it’s catch-up time. We talk about everything, and we laugh and watch TV.”

Passionate, Compassionate and Sensitive

Spending hours affixed to an IV, Osborne bonded with Health First Cancer Institute associates. “You talk about passionate, compassionate, sensitive people,” she said.

“I can’t believe they all remember my name.”

As the last bag of chemo coursed into her veins, Osborne was eager to boast about her care team.

As Health First Medical Group certified medical assistant Shanon Sprague headed over, Osborne explained, “She does my blood tests. She’s great moral support.” She quizzed Sprague, seeking advice about “graduation day” bell ringing. “I’m not really sure if I’m supposed to say something,” Osborne debated, joking, “I’m not going to go, ‘Good riddance,’ or something.” Pausing to laugh, Sprague told her: “We wouldn’t blame you if you did.”

Sprague admits she gets attached to patients like Osborne. “Just being able to help them when they’re in a rough spot is what makes me feel good as a person,” Sprague explained.

As well-wishes and tears flowed, Osborne blamed the chemo. “I’m really emotional,” she said, adding a simple “good morning” can queue her to cry. So did a visit by Courtney Bisbing, who works at checkout. Julie spoke of the time she brought a woman along for support, whom she introduced as her best friend. Bisbing quickly countered, “I thought I was your best friend.” Bisbing said making a patient smile makes her day.

“I always look forward to seeing her,” an emotional Bisbing said of Osborne. “She’s always got a smile on her face, something nice to say … She’s one of those patients you’re really drawn to.” Despite an emotional goodbye and Bob Osborne telling his wife she could still come hang out with staff every few weeks – Osborne felt liberated.

“I’m grateful to have gotten through it,” Osborne said. “My feeling is anybody who can get through that kind of chemo can handle anything – absolutely anything.” ◆

"There is life after (breast) cancer! Five years ago, my life was turned upside down by my diagnosis; it was very overwhelming and exhausting. It was such an encouragement to see women fully living life after such a horrible diagnosis and I knew that's how I wanted my journey to be. Cancer did not and still does not define me. It was a bump (a major and life-changing bump) in my life, but it didn't stop me from living and thriving. After chemo, I was blessed to be able to have two more sweet babies and even start my own business, Thermography of Brevard, helping to prevent breast cancer and other diseases (in men, too) with thermographic scans.

Susan Ohlin was diagnosed with breast cancer on July 27, 2010, and elected to have bilateral mastectomies (both breasts removed) and then immediate reconstruction. She also received chemotherapy for her cancer, which took an entire year. Cancer taught her to not put things off and to live every day.

OGLESBY 2015 Joni Oglesby was diagnosed with breast cancer in November of 2012, and elected to have bilateral mastectomies and then immediate reconstruction. She takes her “super pill” every day to maintain a cancer-free status. Oglesby says, “A cancer diagnosis makes you take stock of your life. Things that you thought were important are not as important, while other things that previously were not so important now have huge importance.”

From SCL’s October 2015 issue: “Your journey is unique to you. There’s a healing time that is different for each individual and there are different levels of healing.”

“I turned 60 this year and decided to have 60 celebrations throughout the year to mark the occasion! So far, I’ve cruised to the Bahamas, taken a riverboat cruise, and a long road trip with my husband. On our road trip, we went to Amelia Island, Savannah, Charleston, Myrtle Beach, Charlotte, Ashville, and Augusta. I’ve also visited my family in Austin, San Antonio, and Beaumont, Texas several times. And so far, this year, I have celebrated with friends 38 times! I have 22 more celebrations to go! I play with my 20-month old granddaughter most weekends, which means I get to see my son and daughter-in-law! I have nephews who live near me so I get to spend time with them and their families as well.”

I know that God is faithful just by looking into my son’s big brown eyes. God got me through cancer the first time 5 years ago and I know that He will guide me through it this time. I have my fears about my son Jackson growing up without a mommy, but my faith is stronger than my fear. And I have to submit my life to God’s plans and His will. I will not let fear keep me from following God, for I know that He will always love me and never leave me. I knew this day could come and cancer “could” viciously return to wreak havoc in my body again I just didn’t think it would be right now. As president of Arbor Financial (an acronym for Assisting Retirees Beyond Ordinary Results), Jeffrey Small Jeffrey Small has spent his career honing his ability to teach the skills necessary to make prudent financial decisions. A subject he will again showcase with his new book, Turning Financial Planning RightSide Up, due out December 12, 2017.

A lifelong resident of Brevard County, Mr. Small works with retirees and preretirees teaching the art of “financial self-defense.”

Working with retirees, Small learned early on in his career that many were putting their financial futures at risk due to a simple lack of knowledge. Jeff utilizes his 30+ years of financial experience to help seniors better understand and then make sound financial decisions. He in turn then shares this wealth of information to assist non-retirees and pre-retirees through the many free educational workshops he holds monthly in our county. Small estimates he does around 30-35 public speaking events a year, all with the intent of giving financial information to the public they currently aren’t receiving.

“Lack of education leads to mistrust and uncertainty, which leads to mistakes.

So, it’s very important to work with somebody who is going to educate you so you have the tools to make the right decisions,” Small said. “That’s the key, it’s very critical. Frankly, we’re more educators than anything else.”

As we mentioned, in addition to his work with Arbor Financial, Jeff Small has made approximately 50 media appearances over the last two years. From television appearances on Fox News, Fox Business News and the American Dream Show, to radio interviews and After the Bell with Jason Stancil. This has garnered him a reputation as a thoughtful and reliable resource among the most knowledgeable financial pundits.

Small’s upcoming book reveals exactly how Wall Street financial planners and the news media steer investors into poor, and what are many times, expensive decisions. “It prescribes proven alternatives that place readers on a path to reach or exceed the specific yield necessary in their situation,” Small explained. COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS

Clean water, cool air, lighting on demand and access to the internet or television are all things we take for granted, until suddenly none of them are available. It is experiences like Hurricane Irma that remind us just how fortunate we all are and the prosperity we enjoy.

The owners and staff at SpaceCoast Living magazine want to express our thanks to the thousands of emergency and police personnel who responded to needs, directed traffic where lights were out and kept watch while all of us were feeling such a sense of anxiety.

Also, to the wave of workers, from within Florida and as far away as California, who responded to the call, left family and friends, to come to our communities to work around the clock to restore power, water and help remove debris from our homes and businesses, we say thanks. We will never pass one of your trucks again without remembering what you mean to our lives and livelihoods.

But most of all, we are reminded how the Golden Rule comes into play. This we saw over and over again.

October 21 Decades in Revue Lip Sync Battle Location: Hilton Melbourne Rialto Place, 200 Rialto Place, Melbourne, FL 32901 On Saturday, October 21,2017, the biggest stars of Brevard County will take the stage to lip sync and perform a song inspired by this year’s theme, the “Awesome 80’s.”

Inspired by the original Jimmy Fallon “Lip Sync Battle”, this feature fundraiser for Brevard Family Partnership will raise funds to help Brevard’s most vulnerable children.

Performers will gather community “votes” prior to their performance in the form of donations. Each $1 raised will equate to one vote for the performer. On their own, Lisa Crites and Sherry Palmer have been instrumental in providing support for breast cancer patients in our community. This OLQ could easily have been used to call attention to either of their contributions. But it is the intersection of the two paths they’ve taken that is the subject of this month’s One Last Question.

SCL: For those new to the area or the subject, can you each tell us a little about where you’ve been and where you’re going?

LISA: I was 41 years old when diagnosed with breast cancer.

It was an absolute shock, as I had no family history of the disease and by all accounts, up until then, conceivably healthy.

I quickly chose to undergo a bilateral mastectomy. During multiple surgeries, I was reduced to showering in a plastic trash bag to protect my surgical drain sites from bacteria-laden tap water. With that personal experience, I moved forward to design and manufacture a product to help future patients. We now distribute The Shower Shirt nationally and internationally to post-mastectomy and chest surgery patients who have drains, ports and/or catheters.

SCL: What are your challenges today? What can our readers do to help?

SHERRY: I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2008, discovered with my yearly mammogram, so I was scheduled for a lumpectomy, but that quickly changed when I had an MRI and we discovered I had a second kind of breast cancer in the other breast, so it was on to a bilateral mastectomy, reconstruction and chemo. Like everyone, after surgery a shower was my first consideration, but I quickly found out that the only way to keep my bandages dry was using a garbage bag. A couple of years ago, I had my implants replaced and got to use one of Lisa’s Shower Shirts. I smiled all the way through my shower; it was so easy to use and I was once again starting to feel better.

SCL: Do you remember when your paths crossed, and did this combined effort develop immediately?

LISA: Yes, it was late 2009 when I was attending a SpaceCoast LIVING event to celebrate the October issue for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I remember the event vividly because it was the first time SpaceCoast Living had gone all out to profile a myriad of Brevard County breast cancer patients.

Once The Shower Shirt Co. could donate Shower Shirt garments to Breast Friends, we quickly did so. I specifically wanted to contribute for those who could not afford them.

Cancer is expensive, so this is one less expense those women in need would have. The best part of the arrangement is the shirts are used. The women are so cute. They use them, wash them, and bring them back to the Breast Friends office for the next person in need.

LISA: Our biggest challenge is not having Medicare coverage so every breast cancer patient would be reimbursed when purchasing a Shower Shirt. However, with or without Medicare coverage, we will still provide this product for all who are in need.

SHERRY: Our biggest challenge is trying to make sure every woman in Brevard knows what we have to offer and that everything is free. We also have “girls’ meetings” each month so they can get more information, support, hugs, humor, whatever they need. We don’t want any of our gals to go through breast cancer alone.

SCL: "Breast Friends” has become “Driven by Heart.” Tellsus about the change and what it means in our community.

SHERRY: Yes, we have a new name as of August 15, 2017; our goals remain the same, as do our programs. As our own entity, we are truly “taking care of Brevard.” It seemed we were always referring to being driven by our hearts, so it was the perfect choice.

SCL: As each of you is a survivor, any last words of wisdom from your journey?

LISA: Don’t let breast cancer define your life. Make sure it only refines your life. My hope is my work with The Shower Shirt, providing an option for patients during the post-mastectomy care process is working towards that refinement.

SHERRY: I agree with Lisa; don’t let it define you. It is a lifechanging event; do what you have to do to get well again and enjoy every day. It sounds a little odd saying this, but prior to breast cancer I had a great life. Getting to know all the folks in this county that want to help us fight this fight has touched my heart in so many ways and enriched my life even more. ◆

In looking back on that very special event in October 2009 (when Sherry and I met) and the magazine cover photo specifically, two things come to mind. The first, I had only one breast due to mastectomy infection complications. During that photo shoot, I kept telling my friend, Donna Skattum (the former editor of SpaceCoast LIVING), I needed to face left not right because I only had a right breast. My second thought: The Shower Shirt was only a vision in the mind of that person standing in the middle on the cover.
