Horses have been revered in Japan as divine steeds since ancient times. This led to donating horses to the Shintō shrines. However, only rich and high-ranking people were able to bestow such gifts. Then model horses created from clay, wood, straw or other materials became substitutes. Later, simple wooden, flat tablets decorated with pictures of horses and written wishes were hung in shrines as seen today.
